PRINCIPAL’S REPORT NEW AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM The Federal Government has negotiated with the States & Territories the development and introduction of a national curriculum, commencing in 2011 and being fully phased in by 2013. The national curriculum will replace all State & Territories curriculum policies. The first phase of the new Australian Curriculum will include the subjects of English, mathematics, science and history. Other curriculum areas such as The Arts, Health and PE and ICT remain the responsibility of the States and territories until national documents have been developed and approved. Currently, we are in a consultative stage, with the draft K-10 Australian Curriculum for English, mathematics, science and history being available for consultation from March to May 2010. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting Authority (ACARA) encourages everyone to be involved in this consultative process and provide feedback. For more information on the draft curriculum, the public can log onto ACARA’s website and follow the links to the draft curriculum, www.acara.edu.au ADHD SUPPORT GROUP Having a child with ADHD can be challenging, exhausting and emotional. If you feel you could
benefit from participation in such a support group where you can share your experiences, the Cranbourne ADHD Support Group has been established for that very purpose. By the way, you needn’t live in Cranbourne to attend the meetings which are held in a non-judgemental climate of friendship and support. Meetings are scheduled for April 15th, May 13th and June 10th from 10.00am to 12.00pm at the Cranbourne Community House, 49 Valepark Crescent, Cranbourne (gold coin donation). For further enquiries, please contact either Flora or Ann at Cranbourne Information & Support Service on 5996 3333 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. If my child is invited to compete at an interstate or international sporting or cultural event, can the school provide any financial support? A. Yes, school council developed a Scholarship Program for just such cases. Applications for scholarships, worth up to $300 should be made in writing to school council. It would be helpful to discuss the application first with me. QUOTABLE QUOTE ‘A digital dinosaur is a person who believes that the word ‘friend’ means one of a select few’

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’ S REPORT FLU VACCINE Last week we provided information from the Department of Health regarding the availability of free vaccine to protect against the H1N1 Influenza 2009 (Swine Flu). In doing so, we made a typographical error indicating that the vaccine had been ‘proved’ by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. This should have read that the vaccine had been ‘approved’ by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Our apologies for this error. Whilst the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development have advised us to promote the importance of utilising the currently available vaccine, one of our parents has drawn our attention to the possibility of adverse reactions to the vaccine. There is a link on the TGA website for people wishing to report adverse reactions. ( www.tga.gov.au ) Parents with concerns should speak to their family doctor or local health service. Additional information is available at http://humanswineflu.health.vic.gov.au or phone inquiries can be directed to the Immunisation Program on 1300 882 008. ASTHMA A one page flyer from the Asthma Foundation of Victoria has been placed in this week’s newsletter. Parents of all children are encouraged to read this flyer. Parents of children with asthma should ensure that their child’s school Asthma Action Plan has been updated and forwarded to the school. If forms
are required please contact the school office. Staff at the school will be undertaking a professional development session next term as part of our Asthma Friendly Schools Accreditation. EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS Parents are reminded of the importance of ensuring their contact details held at the school are current. This is vital in cases of emergency where immediate contact with the parents is required. It is also advisable for parents to check that the details for alternative emergency contacts are current. If details have changed, the changes need to be forwarded to the school office in writing at the earliest opportunity. A change of details proforma is available on request from the office. STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS – STUDENT LEADERS Last night our School Captains, Cameron 6W, Amy 6W, Jack 6C and Kirsty 5/6N, together with Sue Naismith and Debbie Cusack attended The Casey Student Leader’s Forum. The afternoon began with a leadership workshop facilitated by Council’s Youth Services Staff and then the children heard from the guest speaker, Mr Don Elgin. Don is a Paralympic medallist and World Champion whose charm and professionalism inspired and challenged the leaders to make the most of their leadership opportunities. Our Captains were so impressed by the speaker that
they have approached Don to visit our school and speak to our senior students. Tomorrow our 22 student leaders will attend the National Young Leaders Day presentation in the city. Sue Naismith and Jodie Luketic will travel with the children to this annual event and we look forward to hearing from them next week. CURRICULUM NEWS – ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE & SUPPORT PROGRAMS In 2010 we have a range of programs in place to support student learning at different levels across the school. In Years 1 and 2 we have Heather Mathews, Stephanie Davey and Jodie Radings who run our Additional Assistance Program to support Literacy. This program provides a blend of 1:1 and small group sessions. In Years 3 and 4 Rose Scavo provides group sessions focusing on Literacy and Numeracy to complement the work being undertaken by teachers in the classroom. In Years 5 and 6 Robert Barr conducts Numeracy extension and support groups with a range of children. Classroom teachers also utilise Individual Learning Improvement Plans (ILIP’s) for some students with particular learning and/or behaviour needs. These ILIP’s are developed in consultation with the parents and reviewed at regular intervals as required. LYNNE BRENNER & DEBBIE CUSACK
STUDENT LEADERS FORUM Yesterday afternoon at 3:15, Cameron, Jack, Amy and I went to the office to meet Mrs Cusack and Mrs Naismith. Amy and I went in Mrs Naismith’s car and Cameron and Jack went in Mrs Cusack’s car. We drove to Cranbourne Community Centre to the City of Casey Student leaders Forum. All the school captains or students leaders were there from other schools around the City of Casey. We went into the theatre and we had two youth workers from the City of Casey talking to us about how we can be a leader and what we can do. The guest speaker, Don Elgin, told us about his life and how he could be a leader. He was born with only one leg and some of his hands were deformed too. He has 3 different types of legs, one for walking, swimming and athletics, and he was really funny too. Don went to the Paralympic
Games in 2000 and 2004 and competed someone who can be positive, and lead in swimming and athletics. Don has won by example! By Kirsty F 10 gold medals and went through $30,000 worth of legs. When Don was at the Paralympic Games he was in 2nd place. He was waving his hands everywhere and he was singing the national anthem proudly and Don was on the big screens for everyone to see. When Don finished talking everyone went out the theatre into a room and Art News! had something to eat. They had orange Grade 5 / 6 Cartoon Club juice, sandwiches, chicken nuggets and fruit. Amy and I got paper and a pen and The Art Room is open every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime for Grade 5 / 6 we asked Don if we could get his autograph, and we did. At 6.15pm we left students. and went into the cars and drove back to Come and have a go at drawing cartoons in a fun relaxed atmosphere. school, and our parents picked us up. I Easy step by step instructions! learnt that you don’t have to have two Mrs Zammit and Mrs McLeod arms and legs to be a leader. A leader is Visual Art Teachers
