PRINCIPAL’S REPORT STAFF/STUDENT MENTOR PROGRAM This is a new initiative we have introduced this year as part of our student wellbeing program. Every Year 6 student has been assigned their personal staff mentor. I am thrilled to report that the program is working really well. Feedback I have received from staff is very positive indeed. We are all enjoying the experience and the Year 6 students have been very enthusiastic too. It is proving to be a wonderful way of building some genuine relationships between staff and students outside of the regular curriculum lessons.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’ S REPORT BABY NEWS This week we have had some happy news from Kerry and Ryan Worthington about the safe arrival of their little son Zach Andrew Worthington. Zach arrived early last Friday afternoon and both mother and baby are doing well. We would like to congratulate the Worthington family and look forward to a visit from Kerry and Zach in the weeks ahead. SOMERS CAMP On Tuesday morning 34 excited Year 5 and 6 students together with Traceye Rapinett and Nick Pryor headed off for a nine day adventure at the Somers Camp. Early reports indicated that they have arrived safely and have settled in for their time away. Traceye Rapinett has informed us that the behaviour of our students, so far, has been a credit to our school and their families. Nick Pryor assures us that the food is excellent! On the weekend the families of the students on camp will be visiting their children to discover ‘first hand’ the facilities and fun that is being experienced by their children. We look
forward to their full reports on their return to school next Wednesday. STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS – NATIONAL RIDE 2 SCHOOL DAY Yesterday was National Ride 2 School Day and we were pleased to see the number of students riding bikes, scooters or walking to school. Each month teachers survey the students regarding their mode of travel to school. In February, 22% of our students rode or walked on the day they were surveyed and yesterday this figure increased to 28%. The focus of National Ride 2 School day is to encourage students to be more physically active and practise safe travel behaviours. We have also been pleased to notice the increased wearing of helmets by bike and scooter riders. Keep up the great efforts! CURRICULUM NEWS – BLPS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL This year our senior students will be taking part in our Short Film Festival which will replace the production presentation of previous years. This decision was made following a review of the production process, and with a view to incorporating and building upon the ICT skills being developed across the curriculum.
Last week Marcelo Oillataguerre from Stagefright Concert Productions visited the grade 5 and 6 teachers to discuss this exciting new venture. Marcelo and his co -workers will assist our senior students with writing scripts, filming scenes and editing digital film in preparation for the Short Film festival which will screen at the Drum Theatre, Dandenong on Monday 13th September this year. (Please make sure you keep this date free.) Next term will see a flurry of busy students and teachers in the 5/6 area as they prepare for what promises to be a fun but largely educational learning experience. The children and teaching team are all very excited about this new initiative that will be a highlight of the year. All facets of making a film will be experienced from script writing to directing and from acting to editing. We feel that this will be a most rewarding event from many aspects. You are welcome to check in with the senior teachers and/or students to see how they are progressing over the next few months. LYNNE BRENNER & DEBBIE CUSACK

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY On Friday the 12th of March our 22 captains for this year attended the National Young leaders Forum at the Melbourne Convention Centre in the city. It was an early start to the day as we were all on the 7.09am train! The children’s behaviour was exemplary as they listened to several outstanding leaders tell their stories of ‘what makes a good leader’. The messages were positive and powerful and all the children reported they learnt many great strategies they could bring back to Berwick lodge this year. On Friday one of the speakers we listened to was Mike Martin. He told us leadership was about influences and power. Mike made it clear that if you are a good leader good things will happen and if you are a bad leader bad things can happen. He also said that if you are a good leader you will easily realise that the people you are leading have lots of hope and faith in you, your skills and your decisions that you make on the behalf of them. Also if you are not such a good leader At National Young Leaders Day you will realise that a lot of the Glenn Archer, a retired AFL player, people around you will have fear and spoke to us about Leadership and not so much faith in you.
