PRINCIPAL’S REPORT EDUCATION WEEK OPEN NIGHT We are really looking forward to seeing you all at school tonight. This is one of my favourite events as it provides an outstanding opportunity for all of us to get together in an informal way and have the focus squarely on your children. I know the kids love having their parents come to school on Open Night and share their work with you. It’s a great night and I hope to chat with as many parents as possible and I promise not to talk about Collingwood! Tonight is the kids’ night. BUILDING EDUACTION REVOLUTION (BER) UPDATE Things are moving – today, after I wrote this piece I will be attending Beaumaris P.S. as a guest of Tony Scurrah-Whitton a senior representative of ARUP (ARUP is the management company that is overseeing the BER in Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government. The point of this visit is to see a Library/6 Classroom template building the same as the one we are expecting. This will provide me with an excellent opportunity to evaluate the building in terms of functionality and value for money, areas of great concern to us.

Tomorrow Malcolm Mc Comas, Federal Government BER Taskforce Review Team will meet with us at our school for an hour seeking feedback on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister’s second BER Review team on our satisfaction or otherwise with the process and concerns we have over value for money issues. Also in attendance will be a representative from the DEECD, APP (our project managers) and ARUP (Victorian Government P21 BER projects managers). We will have Lynne Brenner, Richard Power, school council president and me in attendance. This Taskforce has been established to investigate value for money issues on the back of widespread criticism of the terms of reference for the earlier investigation conducted by the Auditor-General. Later this week I am expecting our independent quotation for our template building. This will be interesting. The latest delay has been caused by the fact that the template drawings do not lend themselves readily to precise quotations – a factor that can push prices up (unnecessarily had the drawings been of a better standard). I will keep you informed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. What grades will be placed in the new building when it is finished? A. That hasn’t as yet been decided, but our Year 3’s and 4’s are most likely at this stage, though only 6 of the total number of those year level grades can be allocated there. QUOTABLE QUOTE

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT OPEN NIGHT – THURSDAY 20TH MAY Our staff and students have been busily preparing for our Open Night this evening and are looking forward to sharing their work with parents and new visitors to the school. This Open Night has special significance as it is the 20th anniversary of the official school opening ceremony that was held on 20th May 1990. The official opening ceremony was conducted by the Honorable Joan Kirner M.P., Minister of Education and attended by the founding School Council, staff, students and families. When you visit the school this evening please take some time to note the plaque in the foyer that records the school opening and the photo of the founding students and staff that hangs on the wall of the general office. Maybe you will be able to recognise some familiar faces!

The infectious period is usually for one to five days before the onset of the rash, continuing until all the lesions are crusted. · The incubation period is from two to three weeks, although this may be prolonged for immunosuppressed persons. School exclusion differs according to case or contact status: · cases should be excluded until full recovery or for at least five days after the first eruption appears. Some remaining scabs are not a reason for continued exclusion · any child with an immune deficiency or receiving chemotherapy should be excluded for their own protection. Otherwise contacts are not excluded.

from a school in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania USA. This school brought their students back to school in the evening so that they could chat with each other about the progressive stories they have created together online. Both groups of students had prepared questions for each other and presented items and foods from their respective countries. Our students showed some soft toy Australian animals (wombat, koala, cockatoo and possum), some Australian plants (bottlebrush, gum leaves) and aussie foods (pavlovas, lamingtons and vegemite). All of the children were excited and quite amazed to speak to children live from a different time zone and a country where the seasons were opposite to ours. Congratulations to the students involved! BRING HOME A BROTHER OR A SISTER In June-July 2010, students, aged 15 – 18 years, from over 15 countries will be arriving in Australia to study at local schools for 3, 5 or 10 months. Opportunities exist to act as a host family in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide our students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today. To learn more about this opportunity call Student Exchange Australia New Zealand on 1300 135 331 or visit our website: www.studentexchange.org.au
