PRINCIPAL’S REPORT BUILDING EDUCATION REVOLUTION (BER) UPDATE I am currently in discussions with the DEECD with a view to resolving our BER situation in a mutually satisfactory manner. I have presented the DEECD with an offer that I believe could lead to such an outcome. Hopefully this will occur. I have voluntarily given the DEECD my undertaking that the content of our discussions will remain confidential - that is the details will not be made available to the media should they prove to be successful. I will keep you informed. COPING WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) The Cardinia Children’s services are providing a parents and caregivers training session on this condition suffered by what appears to be an increasing number of children. The training program is being led by Dr Richard Eisenmajer on Thursday 17 June from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at the Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre, 8-12 O’Neill Road, Beaconsfield. The cost is $5 per person and bookings are essential. Contact details for bookings are by telephone on 1300 787 624 or by email at mail@cardinia.vic.gov.au CBA DOLLAR MITES SAVING PROGRAM This is a really wonderful success story for our school. Earlier this week, I was contacted by the CBA to inform me that our school had been awarded a $150 incentive award for the outstanding savings record of our
children with the CBA Dollar Mite student banking program. Over the past three years the number of student accounts at our school has risen from 20 to 85 and weekly savings now totals $500. Our school receives a 5% commission on total savings plus $5 per new account opened. Our first quarterly commission was $177 (compared with $547 for the entire 2009 year). It is very heartening that to see that an increasing number of our students are saving money in bank accounts. In an era of increasing debt and low rates of personal saving, it is great life skill to develop – actually saving money in a disciplined way. Of course our school makes a modest, yet ethically sound, level of locally raised funds for school use. A win-win situation if ever there was one! Thanks are due to Denise Aurisch for her enthusiastic commitment to supporting this initiative at our school. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. The PFA will be having an extra ordinary meeting on Tuesday 22nd June at 1:30pm in the canteen area to elect a new President. Anyone wanting to come to the meeting is welcome. We are asking for second hand uniforms. So if you want us to sell them for you or you want to donate them to the school please leave them at the office.. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT MUDDY CHILDREN With the current rain and forecast conditions many of the areas around our school yard become quite muddy. This results in many children presenting themselves to sick bay in a very muddy condition. We frequently remind our students that when it has been raining they should stay on the hard surface areas of the yard and keep away from the wet grassy areas. While we attempt to provide clean, dry clothing for muddy children this is not always possible and we have the need to contact parents to provide a change of clothing or shoes and socks. We ask that parents reinforce this appropriate playground behaviour by discussing the consequences with their children. CARPARKING Parents are reminded that the car parks provided at the Mansfield Street Milk bar and the Berwick Lodge Medical Centre are for patrons of these facilities only and are not available for the use of parents picking up students from our school. We have had complaints from community members who have attempted to access the milk bar during the afternoon pick up time and have been unable to park because families are waiting in their car to collect their children. Likewise the car park at the front of the school is intended for staff usage. Limited parking is available for people with disabilities in the staff carpark and the Cyril Molyneux Reserve car park. It would be appreciated if our community could be mindful of leaving these spaces available for those in need. Parents are also reminded that there is now a sign on the ground at the entrance to the staff carpark to inform pedestrians that access to the school grounds is not available through this gate. This is for safety reasons.
STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS STUDENT MEDICATION In recent weeks with the increased incidence of student illness we have had some queries regarding the school’s policy and practice with regards to administering medications at school. For your information the following guidelines apply to administering medications at school: Medications and medicines can be administered at school for Asthma, ADD/ADHD, antibiotic treatment on doctors’ instructions where children are deemed well enough to attend school, and in those situations where children have long term chronic conditions that require ongoing treatment. The Sick Bay Officer is the staff member responsible for administering prescribed medication to children. All parent requests for the Sickbay Officer to administer medications to their child must be in writing on the Medication Request proforma available from the Administrative Office and must be supported by specific written instructions from the medical practitioner including the name of the student, dosage and time to be administered (original medications bottle or container should provide this information). Non-prescribed oral medications (eg: Headache tablets, cough mixture, antihistamines) as well as creams, ear drops or eye drops will not be administered by school staff. If, in your judgement, your child is well enough to be at school yet they require a medication such as Panadol, then you will need to arrange for it to
be administered by yourself or another adult family member. For safety reasons medications should not be sent to school for your child to self administer. Consistent with our Asthma policy, students who have provided the Sickbay Officer with a completed and signed Asthma Management Plan may carry an asthma inhaler with them.
We are sure that you will understand that the purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that medication is managed in a manner that is appropriate and ensures the safety and wellbeing of all students. If you have any queries regarding these guidelines please don’t hesitate to contact us at the school. We are only too willing to clarify any issues with you. CURRICULUM NEWS PLANNING WEEK During the next week, Friday 18th June to Thursday 24th June each of our teaching teams will be involved in their Term 3 Planning Day. The Prep Team will meet on Friday, the 5/6 Team on Monday, 1/2 Team on Tuesday, 3/4 Team on Wednesday and the Specialist Team on Thursday. During Planning Week the Specialist Programs do not operate and these staff members replace class teachers to allow them to meet with their team for the purpose of long term planning. This arrangement is complimented by the weekly after school planning meetings that teams hold every Wednesday afternoon.
