PRINCIPAL’S REPORT INTERNAL SUSPENSION POLICY We have in place at our school an Internal Suspension Policy as part of our Student Engagement Policy Guidelines (no oxymoron intended!). Under our Guidelines, when students accumulate three (3) formal detentions they are suspended. Detentions are given in situations, for example, whereby students behave poorly, but so badly that it warrants an immediate suspension from school. This approach enables children to reflect on their behaviour and improve it before it leads to formal suspension from school. Internal suspensions are given at the discretion of the principal/assistant principals, taking into account the advice of teachers who are dealing directly with the student concerned. Usually internal suspensions are given in situations whereby extenuating circumstances apply in the case of the third detention. Parents are notified in writing on the day prior to an internal suspension being given to their child. The difference between an internal suspension and a detention is as follows: Detention – lunchtime withdrawal from playground activities, with students being under the direct supervision of a teacher. Detentions take place in a designated classroom. Internal Suspension – child is withdrawn from their classroom and playground activities, remaining under

the supervision of a teacher, usually in a withdrawal room adjoining their regular classroom. Internally suspended children are provided with recess and lunch breaks, but not with their classmates. Children are provided with a full day‟s curriculum activities and are expected to complete a normal day‟s work. Obviously we do not enjoy handing out detentions, internal suspensions nor formal external suspensions. Internal suspensions place a considerable strain on our staff resources and in saying that I trust that we have your support.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. Does attendance at Berwick Lodge Primary School guarantee a secondary enrolment at Berwick Secondary College? A. No. Berwick S.C. has a formal enrolment zone which defines whether your child has an automatic enrolment right at the school. Parents have the right to appeal the refusal by any government secondary college to accept an application for enrolment of their child. A DEECD process is in place to deal with such appeals. If you have any further queries on this issue, I am more than happy to chat with you BUILDING E D U C A T I O N about it.
