PRINCIPAL’S REPORT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING SNAPSHOT We had one of our longest school council meetings for many years last Monday evening – it did not conclude until 10.00pm. Admittedly we had a lot on our plate. Two issues which took a great deal of our time were considering options for our P21 building; in particular interior design changes and colour schemes for the building and examining our draft school self-evaluation in preparation for our school review. Insofar as our BER Library/4 classroom template is concerned, we agreed to have an additional interior wall being installed so as to separate the library from the open learning space in the centre of the building. This will ensure that the library is a self-contained room, providing a quieter learning environment than were it part of a big open-learning centre. We also chose what is called a ‗summer‘ interior colour scheme. This colour scheme features light grey walls with trimmings that include red/browns, burgundy and light blues. Carpets are a medium charcoal colour.
Monash University School Review Team and we are required to prepare a very detailed self-evaluation of our performance over the past four years across a wide range of key performance indicators. In summary, our self-evaluation demonstrated that our school has performed very creditably in most areas and that we justifiably can be proud of our achievements. School Council ratified the document and our School Council President, Richard Power and Vice President, Jodie Norton will both be in attendance at the review. Minutes of school council proceedings will be available for your perusal in a week‘s time from the office, should you wish to see them.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT STUDENTS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL Some concerns have been raised about students who have been dropped off at school at the beginning of the day. It would appear that some students are not following their parent‘s instructions to go straight into the school grounds, and are proceeding to the local milk bar. This has meant that students are arriving at school with snacks and drinks that do not provide a healthy start to the day, and more importantly, they are putting themselves at risk by not remaining in the school grounds once they have arrived. To some extent this can be a problem at the end of the day as well. We would appreciate parents reinforcing the importance of entering and remaining in the school grounds before school and following safe procedures at the end of the day. Teachers will also reinforce these messages through their area assemblies and in class. All families are reminded that teachers are on duty in the school grounds from 8:45 to 9:00am and 3:30 to 3:45pm. Students arriving before 8:45am in the morning or being picked up after 3:45pm in the afternoon should be enrolled in our OHSC program to ensure their safety.

First prize for the Primary School section of this competition is $100 and up to three ‗Highly Commended‘ entries will receive a $25 prize. ONGOING CARPARKING ISSUES Concerns have again been raised regarding the behaviour of drivers in our school car parks. We are aware of some near misses and minor accidents which have occurred as a result of driver impatience and lack of consideration for others. The issues relate to both our Collins Crescent and Cyril Molyneux Reserve carparks. We understand that in the inclement weather more parents are picking up their children and the driving conditions are worsened by the rain, however, the wellbeing and safety of our students must remain our priority. We ask parents to try to keep this in mind and show respect and courtesy to other drivers and consider the safety of all students.
SHAPING THE FUTURE COMPETITION Our CRE coordinator, Katherine Merbis, has brought to our attention a competition that Access Ministries is running for students of different age groups. Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) applications for instalment two must be processed by 13th August 2010. Parents/Guardians who applied in instalment one at the beginning of the year don‘t need to lodge another EMA application to receive the second instalment EMA payment.
