ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT ENROLMENTS AND TRANSFERS FOR 2011 Planning for 2011 is now underway so if you have a child who will be starting school next year, who is not already enrolled, please contact the school to collect enrolment forms. Next week we will also be forwarding all families a letter requesting information regarding students in Prep to Year 5 who may be transferring to another school for 2011. It is important for us to get an accurate picture of the number of students at each year level so that the best plan for students and staff can be put in place. Your support with this process would be greatly appreciated. C H A N G I N G F A M I L Y CIRCUMSTANCES AND SCHOOL RECORDS Some family circumstances do change from time to time. This has implications for our communication with family members. For example, in cases where parents separate and contact arrangements change, it is vital that we are made aware of these changes. Also, it is probably best in such cases that both parents confirm the new arrangements with the school as this will prevent misunderstandings as to the agreed to and/or legal arrangements. Other situations, such as change of address or changes to phone contact details for parents or other emergency contact persons must be brought to our attention as soon as possible. It is very frustrating for everyone when a child needs to go home because they are sick

or injured, for example, and we cannot to interpret the results and an invitation contact anyone. for families to raise any queries regarding the results with the class teacher. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT FAMILY LIFE SESSIONS It was great to see so many families attending last night’s Family Life sessions with their children. The feedback from the evening was that this program is very informative and an excellent way to encourage the conversations that arise when children are seeking answers about themselves, where they come from and what happens as they grow into adults. Parents also took the opportunity to purchase some of the books about these issues that were available for sale. Thank you to all those who supported the evening, despite the cold weather. HEAD LICE We are aware that there are many families in our community who have expressed concern regarding the recurrence of head lice. We certainly share these concerns and can understand the frustration of families having to deal with this. We currently have a process in place whereby if we are aware of an outbreak of head lice in a particular grade, we notify parents and have our Sick Bay attendant check the students as soon as this is possible. These class checks are also done regularly on a cyclic basis. Whilst this does not prevent the occurrence of head lice, it allows us to notify parents who may not be aware of their children being infected. However, there are some families who have not yet given permission for us to carry out these checks on their child/ren. This often makes it difficult to eradicate the head lice cycle. We have made enquiries as to other means of informing parents of the need to regularly check and treat this. Please keep your eyes out in future newsletters on how you can become involved to support the school. In the

meantime we have placed a flyer in this newsletter which contains facts about head lice. We thank the parents who already support us by regularly checking their child’s hair, treating as necessary and informing us of any outbreaks. DISCOVER CASEY-CARDINIA We have received information regarding the ‘Discover Casey-Cardinia’ Expo which will be held on Saturday October 9th from 10:00Am to 4:00PM. This FREE expo will be held at the Berwick Campus of Monash University, Clyde Road, Berwick. FACTS ABOUT HEAD LICE Head lice will be a problem from time to time in Berwick Lodge Primary School and it is important to work together as a school community to minimise the frustration caused by the problem. If your child has head lice – tell anyone who has had head to head contact with them. Half the people who have head lice never scratch their head. If you don’t know about the head lice then they don’t know to look and treat for head lice. Head lice are not fussy about the heads they live on – they make no consideration for income, ethnicity or hair colour. They live their entire lives on human heads and their entire food and water source is supplied from the scalp.
