PRINCIPAL’S REPORT S TUDENT DISCO LAS T FRIDAY What a great time we all had! After an initial problem – our DJ had been involved in an accident and was running late, both discos were highly successful. I must congratulate the kids – firstly, their Halloween costumes were sensational. That really set a wonderful mood for the discos. Secondly, I was very proud of the way our kids enjoyed themselves – lots of dancing, lots of laughter and no bad behaviour. Special thanks are due to our hard working PFA team who organised the disco and to our staff who attended and helped out in a number of important ways. BOB ALLWRIGHT PARENT INFORMATION EVENING NEXT WEDNESDAY Thanks to those parents who have returned their forms indicating that they will be attending next Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.15pm. I have attached another return slip with this newsletter for those of you who are yet to make up your mind. It’s not too late to come and I do recommend Bob Allwright very highly. He really is an outstanding presenter and his message about relationships with our children is well worth hearing.
ALERT REGARDING SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR BY DRIVERS IN CARS Recently we have had several reports of drivers behaving suspiciously in their cars before and after school in o u r g e ne r a l n e i gh bo u r ho od . Apparently, one or two drivers appear to have been following children along local roads, driving slowly behind them. One car has been described as being a small black sedan. These incidents have been reported to Victoria Police and the DEECD Emergency Management. Investigations into these incidents are continuing. My message to you is to remind your children, without alarming them, to be very careful of such behaviour by drivers and if possible, take down the registration number of the vehicle. At no time should children stop and chat with such drivers. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. What are the implications of the ICA College, in Narre Warren South closing, for their students? A. That’s not really our issue and parents of children attending the ICA College should be discussing this matter with the ICA College. Having said that, as I understand matters the
College will be closing at the end of this year and parents will have to find alternative schools for their children. We have had several inquiries for enrolment next year by parents of children currently attending the ICA College and we certainly can take enrolments. QUOTABLE QUOTE

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT SUNSMART PRACTICES AT SCHOOL As we approach Summer and the warmer weather we feel that it is timely to remind our community of Sunsmart practices at school. It is a requirement that all students wear sunsmart hats when participating in all outdoor activities during Terms 1 and 4. This includes recess and lunch breaks, physical education classes, sporting days and other outdoor classes and excursions. Children who do not bring appropriate hats will be required to stay in shady areas under cover. Children must also wear appropriate clothing that protects their shoulders, neck, and body. Mid riff tops, singlet tops, short shorts, strappy sandals and thongs are not considered appropriate school wear. Sunscreen is advisable during the Summer months. Parents are reminded that it is a family responsibility to provide the sunscreen for their own child. We suggest roll on versions as they are easier for students to manage themselves. Teachers will regularly remind children to use the sunscreen supplied from home but cannot accept responsibility for the application of this because of the time that this would involve. Children should also be encouraged to become independent in caring for themselves. Due to the potential for allergic reactions the school does not provide sunscreen for students.
AN INVITATION FROM ‘DOGS VICTORIA’ DOGS Victoria would like to extend an invitation to the students of Berwick Lodge Primary School and their families to attend the fourth annual Big Day Out for Dogs on Sunday, 12 December 2010 at the State Dog Centre (KCC Park), 655 Western Port Highway, Skye. Gates open at 10:30am. This family fun day is free to attend and families are welcome to bring their own dog along to meet new friends, have a go at fun doggy activities and take their owners shopping at the Canine Christmas Market. They might even win a prize in one of our fun competitions, such as Waggiest Tail, or participate in the pet parade. There will also be a dog and puppy meet and greet section with dozens of different breeds. For families thinking about adding a dog to their household, this is a great opportunity to find the type that best suits them. There will be a huge variety from Maltese to Mastiff! SCHOOL VALUES SURVEY Families are reminded that tomorrow will be the last opportunity to provide input into our survey reviewing the relevance of our current school values (Integrity, Empowerment, Excellence, Cooperation, Respect) in preparation for The PFA is planning to hold a sunscreen the development of the Strategic Plan for fundraiser early in the new year. BUILDING RESILIENT CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS We hear a lot of talk about resilience in schools and at home. But building resilience in children starts much earlier than school age so it is crucial for parents to learn how to raise a resilient child.
As a trained social worker and teacher, Chris Daicos has extensive experience in working directly with children and adolescents in schools. Following a number of years in the classroom she undertook a Bachelor of Social Work degree and worked as a social worker with the Department of Education for 13 years. She has facilitated many successful professional development sessions for teachers and FREE PARENT INFO SESSION with parents on a range of topics. Things to say to encourage emotional resilience
When you catch the young person being emotionally resilient, say: That was great. You didn’t let yourself get too angry When I raised my voice with you earlier today, I noticed that, while you were upset, you weren’t furious. Knowing how to control your temper is a great skill to have. You seem to really have learned how not to get too nervous and to relax before exams. That will help you be successful. You really controlled your nerves when you gave that speech. You see, talking with someone about the problem can help you feel less upset. You didn’t let that setback stop you from trying. Great! You really are learning that sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never hurt you. You seem not to have blown that event out of proportion. That helps you to be in control. You really seem to know the meaning of ‘resilience’. Even though you haven’t made the team yet, you seem to have a really positive outlook. You are good at staying calm.

Last Friday the 29th October all children in Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 took part in Berwick Lodge’s Jump Off Day for Jump Rope for Heart. Cookie Dough: We have sent out forms for Cookie Dough. These forms must be in by Tuesday 16th November. We have sampled the Christmas cake and it is lovely. There is also shortbread. Great for homemade Christmas presents. Orders will be delivered 2 weeks after forms are given in. Remember if you want to make Christmas cookies to get your orders in. HALLOWEEN DISCO: The Disco was last Friday night. We would like to thanks the Teachers for all there help, especially Ms Rapinett who went out of her way to help set up the music when our DJ was late. We would also like to thanks the many parents who did an amazing job to help us on the night. I think everyone had a fantastic night and the costumes were fantastic!!! OUTDOOR TWILIGHT CINEMA: WE are having an outdoor cinema on the oval at the end of term (Friday 10th December). If your company would like to advertise before the movie please send a note to the office for the PFA, and you will be contacted. Forms will be sent out later in the term. Election – 27th November 2010: We are putting on another BBQ for the Election and need some help on the day. So if you are able to help for an hour or more please fill out the form below. Shopping Tour: This Saturday 6th November is the Shopping tour. Remember to get to BLPS by 7:15am for a 7:30am start. We should get back to BLPS around 6:30pm.
