CANTEEN IS NOT OPEN ON TUESDAYS BER UPDATE Julie Alliston, General Manager, DEECD BER Team, contacted me last week to tell me to that she needed more time to respond to our request for details/access to our remaining BER project funds so that we could manage the use of these funds in line with National BER Guidelines ourselves. This was the essence of the deal that was brokered between the DEECD (via Julie Alliston) and me (on behalf of BLPS) last year in accord with undertakings given us by the then Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. As we had agreed to downgrade our template building from a notional $3 million facility to a notional $2 million building, we believe it is reasonable to expect at least a $1 million sum available for our management on a companion project. Julie Alliston had originally informed me that she would need about 2 weeks to respond to our request – assuring me that the DEECD was working toward the achievement of our aim. Julie explained that as the BER Team‟s workload had been increased recently, she would need more time. In thanking her for alerting me this, I informed her that we could wait a little longer. That was a week ago and I expect to hear
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT from her soon. Yesterday David Chandler, a member of the BER Orgill Taskforce visited our school for the third time since work on our project commenced in early December. David is a member of the Taskforce that is operating under the authority of the federal government to ascertain „value for money‟ for BER projects across Australia. He was very unimpressed with the lack of progress on our project, in addition to several construction issues. David has assured me that he will visit our school at least twice more before our project is completed. I understand that he is seeking urgent talks with APP, our project management company in order to speed things up and address several construction issues. I will keep you informed!

TERM ONE COMPLETED Gee! Time moves by so quickly – term 1 is over already. It has been a great term in many ways – our new students, including our Preps have settled in very well, we‟ve had some great social events, fundraising and of course lots of learning taking place. Do have an enjoyable break if you are taking time off and hoping Easter is a time of peace and relaxation for everyone.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ‟s) Q. Why are children dismissed early on the last day of term? A. That‟s a decision made possible because of government regulations. Schools can dismiss children an hour early at the end of terms 1, 2 and 3 and 2 hours early at the end of term 4. The road to despair is sign posted ‘perfectionism’.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR During the recent Crazy Dress Day and the House Athletics Day several children presented at school wearing inappropriate clothing and footwear. This indicated to us that it may be timely to remind families of the expectations with regard to what their children are wearing to school. At all times students are required to wear clothing which covers their shoulders and body adequately and footwear that provides adequate cover and protection for school related activities and playing in the playground. For example, school shoes or sports shoes are preferred and sturdy sandals are acceptable. No thongs, high heeled shoes, moccasins or other soft soled shoes are to be worn. Teachers may make the decision to withdraw students from activities if they feel that the child is inappropriately attired or has unsatisfactory footwear. The school will attempt to contact parents if this is the case. HEAD LICE CHECKS During the two week holiday break, we would appreciate the support of every family in the school in the detection and total eradication of any live lice and/or eggs that are found in children‟s hair. While we realise that families are busy, we feel that it would be a most worthwhile exercise in eradicating lice from the school. To be successful, every family would need to commit some time to: Check their children‟s hair at least twice over the holidays. (Eg: Week 1 and Week 2)
If any live lice are found, treat immediately. (Complete follow-up checks and treatment.) If any eggs are found, apply lots of conditioner, and patiently remove all eggs. If every family is diligent in this exercise, we will be able to break the head lice cycle in the school. We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and look forward to „Lice-free Term 2 at B.L.P.S.!” CAMP AUSTRALIA NEWS Yesterday we met Dorien Erasmus who will be the new coordinator for our before and after school care program. Dorien will commence her duties on the morning of Wednesday 27th April. Dorien has previous experience as a program coordinator with Camp Australia and is familiar with our program having worked with Domenic and Olivia in the past. She is looking forward to working with Jess and Emma and meeting the children of BLPS and their families. Please introduce yourself to Dorien and make her feel welcome. SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES The City of Casey offers a range of activities and events to suit children of all ages during the school holidays. The program for the Autumn Holidays 2011 is available from the school office. END OF TERM ONE Parents are reminded that Term 1 ends tomorrow (Friday 8th April). In line with our usual practice for the end of term the students will be dismissed from their classrooms at 2:30PM. Term 2 will commence for students and teachers on Wednesday 27th April.

You Can Schools Program Working with Canteen and the Sony Foundation, Berwick Lodge Primary School will be collecting old mobile phones to be recycled. The funds from these mobile phones will go to much needed funds to build youth cancer centres across Australia. The more mobile phones we collect and recycle the more educational tools Berwick Lodge Primary School will receive. These could include video cameras, laptops, and possibly Interactive Whiteboards which will be a great addition to our school. There is a collection bin in the front foyer, located outside Mrs Cusack‟s office. Please hunt around at home, or ask your friends, neighbours, work colleagues and local community groups, to look for any old mobile phones and place them in the collection bin located in the school foyer. We are very excited to be underway with rehearsals for J Rock 2011! Due to the overwhelming number of interested students, it was impossible to provide everyone with an on stage role. Dear Parents/Guardians, This year all Grades 3 to 6 children will be participating in the Fantastic Fridays Program in Term 2. This program will run on Friday afternoons (2:30 to 3:30) starting from Week 2 and will run for approximately 8 weeks. It is an elective program where students will be mixed with their peers to learn a variety of different subjects outside the normal curriculum areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The elective programs on offer are: Gymnastics J-Rock Lego Cooking Art / Craft Construction Billycarts County Fair Fashion / Jewellery Making Science and Technology We have a number of teachers allocated to the various programs but are asking our school community for some support. If you have any expertise in any of the following areas and would like to participate in the program we would greatly appreciate your time and experience. These activities require different materials and resources and we would greatly appreciate any donations to support our Fantastic Fridays Program. They are a great compact size and are very useful for all children to have in their bags now with our lovely sunny weather! MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING: Please remember to bring in your old mobile phones and support our Junior School Council. Don‟t forget, the more phones we collect, the more Sony products we get as a reward.
THANKYOU Thank you to all those Mums and Dad (Stan) who helped us with our Hot Dog Day on Tuesday. We appreciate all the hot dog cooking, bun slicing and delivering to classes. Without you, the day would not have been the success it was. Sarah, Andrea and the PFA committee want to thank everyone who has supported our fundraising events in Term 1. The success of the disco, drive-in night and hot dog day, is thanks to our whole school community, our students and families who attended the events and those volunteers who helped run them.
