PRINCIPAL’S REPORT J-ROCK AT HISENSE ARENA Wow! What a performance indeed. I had the privilege of attending the J-Rock concert at Hisense Arena on Monday evening. Our students performance was simply dazzling, a performance which was acknowledged by the judges with 4 different recognition awards. This was the first time Berwick Lodge students participated in J-Rock and I must say how impressive they were. Their performance was outstanding – professionally excellent in every respect. Eleven schools participated on the evening and the quality of performance was very high which made the evening for the audience a wonderful experience. Congratulations are in order for Tahnee Planner, our performing arts teacher who choreographed our students‟ performance and her dedicated support team. Well done to all our students. I‟m sure some of you may have a career in dance and drama awaiting you. For those of you who missed the evening, you will have another chance to see our students in action when they present their performance again at our film night. A DVD of all performances is being produced by J-Rock and will be available for purchase online, via their website shortly.

SINGAPORE TRIP I met a group of tired but excited students and staff at Melbourne Airport on Saturday evening upon their return from their trip to Singapore. As they reported on Monday morning at our assembly, they all had a wonderful time, developing new friendships and learning a lot about the culture of another country. I am pleased to say that this, our inaugural trip to Singapore by our students, marks the beginning of our venture into international educational experiences for our school.

this to David Chandler, BER Taskforce Deputy Chairman who has maintained a vigilant presence on our project.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. Is it too late to pay my compulsory fees and voluntary contribution for this year? A. Obviously not, nor will it be. We would really welcome payment for those compulsory fees still outstanding and there are more than a few of them. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT DEECD PARENT OPINION SURVEY As part of school accountability requirements all Victorian Government Schools are required to conduct this survey at this time of the year. The surveys are distributed according to guidelines developed by DEECD, to a randomly selected sample representing 15% of the total student enrolments for the school. The survey data enables the monitoring of school performance with the aim of identifying strengths and areas for improvement. The reliability of the data for the individual school is increased if the response rate is maximised, therefore we would encourage families who receive a survey to take the time to provide their responses. For our school, 102 families will receive their survey package on Monday 22nd August 2011 and are requested to return the completed survey to the school by Friday 26th August 2011.

their families at Melbourne Airport until their return on Saturday evening. They were wonderful ambassadors for Berwick Lodge Primary School and have gained lasting impressions of their time in a foreign country. On their return to school the students involved have been busy writing blog posts which are featured on our school website. ( http:// berwicklodge2singapore.global2.vic.edu.au )

students and would like to congratulate them on their commitment and the high standard of their performance. We also acknowledge the time and effort devoted throughout rehearsals and on the performance day of our Performing Arts teacher, Tahnee Planner, Gail and Ken Planner, and staff, parents and back stage students. Congratulations to all involved!

BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY To celebrate Book Week (20th-26th August 2011) and Literacy Week (29th August-4th September 2011) we are having a dress-up day. On Friday 2nd September 2011 all the students at Berwick Lodge Primary School are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to help raise money for our 2 Asian schools in Cambodia and Laos. At the moment these children only have one A5 notebook to record all their learning for the whole year. It would be nice to think we could provide them with some much-needed books. Weather permitting; a whole school buddy lunch will take place on the basketball courts to showcase everyone‟s effort. There will be a „Smiggle‟ prize awarded to the best-dressed student in each grade! Happy costume designing,

Miss Sarah Vine

“J ROCK PERFORMANCE ” WOW! What a night! On Monday night our fabulous J Rock stars finally got to perform at Hisense Arena in front of a huge crowd! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to our amazing J Rock cast, crew and co-host for an outstanding effort! I could not be more proud of the commitment, dedication and professionalism shown by each and every student involved. The team represented Berwick Lodge with such good spirits and excellent behaviour. It was a privilege to share the day with them. The J Rock event is non-competitive; however each participating school is awarded three individual awards. We are extremely excited to announce our awards:

*Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance Award of Excellence for Choreography *Brainstorm Productions Award of Excellence for Drama *Award of Excellence for Visual Enhancement

The day could not have been a success without the integral support and help on the day. A BIG thank-you to the following staff and parent helpers: Traceye Rapinett, Jackie Pope, Vanessa Stevens, Jo Zammit, Sarah Vine, Nadine Giaccotto, Jennie Tranter, Mairead Musco, Jacqui Evans, Jacqui Taylor, Chris Joyce, Skye Saleta, Liesal Nunn, Rosemary Nunn and Rhonda Pelzer. Also thank-you to the following people for their contributions towards the production of the performance; The PFA, Sarah Hartnett, Carolyn Mehr, Karen Winbanks, Jolene O’Halloran, Michelle Winchester, Sam Peterson, Lintons Home & Garden Mt.Eliza and all the students who helped with painting, in particular Sophie & Laura from 6N. On a personal level, I can‟t go without publicly giving a very special thank-you to the most amazing parents I know- my own; Gail & Ken Planner. To my mum for designing and making 90 incredible costumes and to my dad for designing and constructing the sets for the show. It is impossible to put a value on their support, time and voluntary community contribution. The show would not have gone on without them and we were all so incredibly lucky to have them as an essential part of our wonderful team. If you didn‟t get the chance to see the performance or would love to see it again, the J Rock students will be performing their „Beautiful Monster‟ piece at the Grade 5/6 Film Festival night on Monday the 19th September at the Drum Theatre Dandenong! Be sure not to miss out and watch for information about ticket sales. Keep performing

J ROCK REPORT On Monday 15th August 2011 approximately 90 BLPS students participated in the J Rock Challenge. Everyone arrived at school at 8 am so we could arrive at Hi-Sense Arena on time. When we arrived everyone was really excited and couldn‟t wait to perform. After this we went and settled down in our dressing room and we wrote cards to the other schools wishing them good luck. Once we had settled in it was time for our rehearsal. We had to have 3 run throughs to test the lighting and perfect our performance on the stage which was much bigger than we were used to. It was really exciting when the other schools were watching us practice and they seemed to really enjoy our performance. After our practice we headed back to the dressing room to relax before it was time to get our make-up and costumes on. Once we were all ready we couldn‟t wait to get out onto the stage. Everyone performed really well and had a great time. The feedback from the judges was great and they said a lot about our team work, they knew who the main character was all the way through and they could tell the message we were trying to get through to the audience. This message was just because you are different it is still possible to fit-in. Everyone had a great time and we would like to thank Miss. Planner, Mr & Mrs Planner, Mrs Stevens, Mrs. Pope, Miss. Rapinett, Miss. Vine, Mrs. Zammit, Mrs. Musco, Miss. Giacotto, and all the parents and helpers involved. By Lilli 5H

Discuss with the young person what it means to be a good “time manager” and how being good at managing time helps him/her to be an achieving young person. Help the young person think about the various steps to a project or assignment (e.g. making sure they understand instructions, gathering information, doing a draft, completing the final draft) and how he/she should try to estimate how long a step will take. Have the young person schedule steps on a monthly calendar. Discuss with the young person on a regular basis how much time during the week and on weekends he/she should spend doing homework. Provide a daily after-school schedule for the young person to plan when he/she is going to do homework. Help the young person establish a set time each night when he/she will start homework. Make sure the young person writes down in a planner every homework assignment, including due dates. Review these with the young person on a daily basis. Discuss the meaning of the word “priority” and give the young person practice in deciding on the priority of various schoolwork, family and fun activities. Have the young person agree that schoolwork is a high priority that sometimes needs to be done before other fun activities are done.
