FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. Will we be using the new BER building this year? A.No. We will be using the time available in term 4 after the building is completed to ensure that we have the building properly furnished and set out in the way that we wish to use it next year. It would be too disruptive to relocate grades and our library for one term.

BELEZA UNIFORM SALE

Be especially careful during the middle part of the day (between 10:00AM – 2:00PM or 11:00AM – 3:00PM daylight saving time) when the UV rays are most intense.

We have received information from Beleza, the supplier of our school uniforms that they are having a sale this week. Until Saturday 3rd September 2011 families can receive 20% off the normal retail price with the purchase of any Berwick Lodge Primary School uniform item. Beleza has several outlets, the closest is the Hallam store located at Shop 7 151-159 Princes Highway, Hallam. They can be contacted on 9702 3181.

FROM 5th SEPTEMBER, 2011 THINGS TO REMEMBER: UV levels are on the rise again so September is the time to grab your sun protection gear. When UV levels reach 3 and above, sun protection is needed because the sun can start to damage skin and eyes and lead to skin cancer. Use a combination of the following five sun protection measures. 1. SLIP on clothing that covers as much skin as possible (no singlet tops)

CONGRATULATIONS NATALIE Recently some of our students entered an art competition for Chemart Chemist. More than 100 entries were received across the state. The children were asked to create an artwork based on the theme of „wellbeing‟ with 12 entries to be chosen to create the Chemist 2012 Calendar. Congratulations to Natalie 5W who created a beautiful watercolour depicting „feeling good, feeling healthy, feeling happy‟. Natalie‟s successful entry has been chosen for the May page and she wins $1000 for our school. Well done Natalie; we are very proud of your effort.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome everyone to my School Council President‟s Report. SCHOOL COUNCILLOR PROFILES This week I would like to introduce Lesley Lees, one of our new parent representatives and Sue Naismith, one of DEECD representatives and Grade 6 teacher. Lesley Lees: Hi Everyone! My name is Lesley Lees, and I have been part of School Council since the beginning of this year. I have been asked to tell you all a little bit about myself, so here goes: I grew up in the Springvale area, and moved to Hampton Park when I married my husband Michael, in 1991. Since then we have had three wonderful children, Ben (17), Josh (14) and Chloe (8). Although I am a qualified accountant, I have put my career aside for the moment, so that I have the time required to raise my children. I work part-time at Case Victoria in Dandenong, doing accounts and administration. I don‟t get a lot of spare time for hobbies, but I do love spending time with my friends, music, dancing and even karaoke on the rare occasion (did I just admit that in the newsletter??). I have been involved with Berwick Lodge since my eldest son started here in Grade 2 in 2001. I could not have asked for a better primary school experience for my children, and will be very sad when my youngest child finishes at the school in 2014. Please do not hesitate to contact myself, or any of the other school council members, if you have any questions or comments you would like to discuss. Sue Naismith: I‟ve been at Berwick Lodge P.S for just over 20 years now and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every one of those years! Although I am currently teaching in the senior grades I have taught in all areas of the school and even spent time as the Library teacher when the school first opened. My passion is to contribute to the education and development of all of our children in a positive and encouraging way. Outside of school I have a wonderful family and we love to enjoy the outdoors life. We have travelled to many places all over Australia in our caravan and love to stop and enjoy the scenery of our great country. I also love to garden and spend time fishing when the weather is kind to us! PRINCIPAL’S DAY This Friday 2nd September 2011, is the annual VPA Principal‟s Day. On behalf of our School Council and our school community I would like to thank our Principal Class Team (Henry Grossek, Lynne Brenner and Debbie Cusack) for all their hard work, dedication, time and effort they put in to making Berwick Lodge Primary School the great school we all recognize it is. If you see one of the team on Friday, please stop and wish them a “Happy Principal‟s Day” to let them know the work they do is appreciated. FATHER’S DAY STALL Today I assisted at our annual Father‟s Day Stall and I would like to congratulate the PFA on a very well organized morning. It was a great to see our students choosing gifts for their Dad, Grandad or Great-Grandad. Thank you to the PFA for running this stall and providing this service to our school. I would also like to wish all our Dads, Grandads and Greatdads a very Happy Father‟s Day. I hope you have a great Sunday! Please do not hesitate to contact me directly via the school office or you can email me on norton.jodie.j@edumail.vic.gov.au

BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY To celebrate Book Week (20th-26th August 2011) and Literacy Week (29th August4th September 2011) we are having a dress-up day. On Friday 2nd September 2011 all the students at Berwick Lodge Primary School are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to help raise money for our 2 Asian schools in Cambodia and Laos. At the moment these children only have one A5 notebook to record all their learning for the whole year. It would be nice to think we could provide them with some much-needed books. Weather permitting; a whole school buddy lunch will take place on the basketball courts to showcase everyone‟s effort. There will be a „Smiggle‟ prize awarded to the best-dressed student in each grade! Happy costume designing, Miss Sarah Vine
