Jessica Ruth Bohrer and Ryal Edwin Siem Jr. became husband and wife on Friday, May 30, 2008 at La Riva Resort in Perdido Key, Florida.

T

Jessica & Ryal Siem

The couple first met during their sophomore year of college. Ryal was hosting their college talent show and Jessica was tagging along with a friend who later introduced the two. They both agreed that they had each other’s eyes at hello. They became best friends and started doing everything that best friends do. Jessica knew that she had found a friend for life. They both soon found that the inevitable bond was more than just friends. They began dating in February of 2006 and have been inseparable ever since.

On April 27, 2007, Ryal took Jessica to Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant for dinner. Following dinner, Ryal had ordered Bananas Foster. The waiter brought the dessert and an additional silver covered platter. Jessica was very confused when the Bananas Foster was placed in front of her and the silver platter in front of Ryal. As Jessica began to question Ryal, he opened the silver covering…and there was the ring! He got down on one knee and asked, “Jessica Ruth Bohrer, Will you marry me?” She said “Yes!” After much thought and deliberation, the couple decided on a beach wedding. They opted for a small, intimate affair while

sending out seventy-five invitations to family and close friends. Nealy Beach-Digilormo of Chez Rivage Events assisted in the wedding coordination. This made Jessica’s dream of a vintage romantic beach wedding come true. The ceremony took place on the beach at sunset. A string quartette played all of the traditional songs as the guests sat in white chairs tagged with flowers and bows. The aisle was covered in a burlap runner and was drizzled with petals. Fiore of Pensacola provided flowers, which included peonies, gardenias, sweet peas, cottage roses and traditional roses. The couple exchanged vows under a bamboo canopy draped with fabric, which looked so beautiful flowing in the wind. Jessica and Ryal found nothing more romantic than sharing their vows with the sand between their toes and the sound of waves in their ears! The bride wore a vintage style, soft ivory, silk taffeta dress by Paloma Blanca. It was a strapless dress with a slight sweet heart line at the top of the bodice and was trimmed in the back with satin covered buttons to the bottom of the zipper. The dress was floor length with pick-ups trimmed all around the bottom with lace patches and tossed with pearls. The dress came with a laced bolero, which she wore at the reception. Jessica chose a specific

veil made by Bellaire. Her mother had worn an exact style in her own wedding. The soft ivory colored, fingertip length veil fell around her shoulders. The bride’s jewelry was consistent with the vintage theme and included a very special ring that Ryal had given to her on their wedding day. The traditional “something old” was her mother’s promise ring given from her dad when they were 16 years old. Her “something new” was a pair of strappy, ivory, satin heels. “Something borrowed” was her late Memaw’s angel pin, which was pinned onto her bouquet and borrowed from her mother. Her “something blue” was a satin tiffany blue clutch with a crystal-covered bow. The bridesmaids wore different styled tea-length taffeta dresses in French almond (antique rose). The flower girls wore sleeveless, ivory, tea-length dresses with a wide ribbon tied to the back. The groom wore a chocolate suit with an ivory colored shirt and tie. The groomsmen and ring-bearer wore the same with the exception of chocolate colored ties. The couple left the ceremony and headed for the reception in a tiffany blue old-fashioned Chevy Impala. The reception was held at the Lost Key Resort Country Club in Perdido Key, Florida where the staff was extremely helpful and very easy to work with. Will McKean with End of the Road Records provided the entertainment. The romantic theme continued in the 3-room reception area having a beautiful lobby entry. The couple’s four-tiered wedding cake was centered in the main reception room and was provided by Betty Weber. The main room also included a slide show of the two growing up. The screened in patio included a buffet catered by Lost Key, consisting of Chicken Piccatta, Bronzed Grouper, Steamed Vegetables, Herb Roasted Red Skin Potatoes, and a full salad and fruit bar. From the patio to the porch, there were more tables as well as a favor table. The favor table was an oldfashioned candy shoppe that included five different types of candy. The guests were given a vintage candy bag labeled “Ryal & Jessica’s Sweet Shoppe, Established May 30, 2008.” As guests exited the porch, they walked into a large fabric draped tent illuminated by a beautiful chandelier, candles, and of course, the moonlight! Also inside were round and highboy tables, a live band, and a wooden dance floor where Ryal and Jessica shared their first dance to “The way you look tonight” by Frank Sinatra. After cutting the cake, dancing the night away, and tossing the garter and bouquet, the couple left the reception by walking through a trail of guests holding sparklers that led straight to their limo. They departed for Riviera Maya, Mexico for their 7 day 6 night honeymoon stay at Secrets Capri Resort. Ryal and Jessica purchased their first home in September and now happily reside just 10 minutes from the Shreveport/ Bossier area, in Benton, Louisiana. •

Unsual Save the Date

H

e asked, you said “yes!” So now what? Bridal party, venue, photographer, cake designer, sometimes the list of decisions you will be making may seem endless. One of the first things you will want to consider is your “Save the Date” announcement. “Save the Dates” are traditionally used to give your friends and family a heads up that you will be getting married, so that they can plan their own schedules accordingly.

They are particularly important for destination weddings, as these often require your guests to take time off from work, and to make travel arrangements. Usually, couples will send their “Save the Dates” six months before the wedding, but if you are planning a destination wedding, you may want to consider sending them out as much as a year in advance.

Stationery is beautiful, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Don’t underestimate the importance of this announcement, because it is the first indication of your wedding style, and it sets the tone for the event. If you are planning a casual beach wedding, the funky flip flops featured on this page would be a great way to announce to your loved ones that you’ll be celebrating your nuptials with a backdrop of sun, surf, and sand. If you’ve always wanted the big church wedding with all the associated traditional elegance, then a classic engraved invitation may be right for you. Running away to Vegas, but inviting your family and friends along for the fun? Check out a Las Vegas themed “Save the Date.” Stationery is beautiful, but don’t be afraid to think out of the box! An innovative photographer, videographer, or graphic designer can help you focus on your passions and help weave it into your personal wedding style. F. Scott Kennedy, a photographer based in Dothan, Alabama, recently captured a newly engaged couple waterskiing…Scott says “Kate & Austin are getting married later this year and we did a very special save the date card for them, water continued next page

skiing in a tux and gown! They both water ski and she does it professionally.” Diva Productions, a videography and photography company in Panama City Beach, tells us they are also doing a faux “Trash the Dress” for one of their couples as a “Save the Date.” The bride and groom are both graphic designers, so they are going to let them go crazy with paint all over a white backdrop and each other! (a la Jackson Pollock) Meanwhile Diva plans to film and photograph the session. The final shot will be the couple painting their wedding date on to the backdrop. In both of these examples the couples are able to use the images on their wedding website, to e-mail,

and to send out via snail mail to their guests. Remember, your wedding style is revealed the moment your “Save the Date” lands on a guests doormat or in their e-mail inbox. With this one document, video, or photograph, you are setting the tone for your big day while ensuring friends and love ones have plenty of time to make their plans to attend your wedding. • Photography provided by Diva Productions www.diva-productions.com and F. Don’t Forget: Every guest who receives a “save the date” should also receive an invitation.

A Seaside Celebration A reception at Bud & Alley’s after an intimate ceremony in the Chapel makes for a memorable wedding weekend. By Lynn Nesmith Photographs by Robby Followell

D

estination weddings have never been more popular, and for most couples the beach is the preferred location. Chelsea Dossett and Landon Howell were no exception. But they were also transplanted Southerners living in Seattle, Washington, who wanted to tie the knot on familiar waterfront territory. Chelsea, a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Landon, who grew up in Jasper, Alabama, met while attending Mississippi College. After graduation, Chelsea moved to Los Angeles and Landon was living in Seattle. Over Christmas 2006, they were both back home for the holidays and reconnected. It wasn’t long before Chelsea relocated to Seattle and by the next spring they were engaged. As they started planning their wedding it was only natural to focus on the beaches of Northwest Florida as their destination. “Growing up in the South, the Destin area was always a frequent vacation location for us and our friends,”

says Chelsea. “We love the nostalgic feelings of the Gulf Coast beaches.” When considering possible locations to start a life together, each immediately thought of the town of Seaside and Bud & Alley’s. “One of the first wedding details we agreed upon was that we wanted to keep it personal, simple and sophisticated,” Chelsea recalls. “We wanted to share the day with our immediate family and our wedding party, which included our closest friends.” Most of their 75 guests were from the south and had spent vacations in the area so the location offered an easy and familiar getaway that everyone could enjoy. The wedding took place on a perfect October Saturday in the Seaside Chapel and Landon’s father, Conrad officiated. Although neither Chelsea nor Landon had actually been to the Chapel, they had both seen photographs. “It turned out to be the exact image of simplicity and modern architecture we desired,” says Chelsea. After the vows, the guests leisurely

headed to a waterfront reception at Bud & Alley’s. Chelsea and Landon worked with Kim Estes, Bud & Alley’s special events coordinator to transform the gazebo and tented herb garden into magical setting to celebrate the start of their life together. Guests toasted the setting sun over the Gulf of Mexico with champagne. As twilight turned to evening, executive chef Ed Reese set a gracious and delicious buffet drawn from the bounty of the sea and the freshest local offerings. The wedding cake, a simply elegant design by Fatty Patty’s Cakes and surrounded by flowers by Bella Flora, anchored a corner of the gazebo. Well into the night, Chelsea and Landon and guests danced to the sounds of The House Rockers, a favorite band that the couple had frequently seen perform during their college days in Mississippi. “We can honestly say that Bud & Alley’s created the perfect setting for our wedding reception: simple yet sophisticated, elegant yet at the same time casual and

comfortable,” says Chelsea. From the beginning, the couple wanted to make sure the wedding weekend was a vacation for all their guests. Bud & Alley’s congenial atmosphere and Seaside’s close proximity to the Gulf are the perfect environment for a true getaway. “We still hear from our friends and families about what a great time they had... and that’s the best wedding gift for us,” adds Chelsea. The town’s array of rental cottages and pedestrian-friendly layout suited the bridal party as well. Chelsea’s parents rented a cottage directly across from the chapel, which provided the ideal location to get ready before the ceremony. The bridesmaids and Chelsea stayed in a residence above the shops of Central Square, and the groom and his groomsmen rented a cottage in nearby WaterColor. Everything about the wedding weekend and reception reflected the couple’s unique personalities and gracious sense of style. However, Chelsea is quick to credit all the folks in Seaside who helped with the planning. “One of the most gratifying experiences of the weekend was the ease of organization on our part due to the amazing staff at Bud & Alley’s. No matter the situation, they could handle it,” maintains Chelsea. “I couldn’t recommend Seaside enough. It was the setting we had hoped for and it exceeded our expectations.” •

For Your Own Special Celebration For more than 20 years, Bud & Alley’s has set the highest standards for customized special events right on the Gulf of Mexico in Seaside. Kim Estes, Chef Ed Reese and the entire staff of Bud & Alley’s work together to create an unforgettable event for the bride and groom, as well family and friends. Picture-Perfect Touches A wedding is a sacred ceremony and a celebration of the couple’s individuality and sense of grace and style. Photographer Robby Followell, who also attended Mississippi College and had shot many of their friends’ wedding, captured out of the ordinary images throughout the special day. “Not only is Robby an incredible talent; but he and his wife are a perfect team and the job done seemed almost effortless,” says Chelsea. “He is wonderful to work with and while you don’t even know he’s there, he captures the moments even better than you remember.” robby@followellfotography.com or www.followellfotography.com

Asha Alexander and Michael Garza were married on December 6, 2008 in Seagrove Beach, Florida.

Asha and Michael Garza

T

he two were high school sweethearts. The couple met during the spring of their junior year of high school. Mike had asked Asha to be his girlfriend several times before she finally committed. They dated on and off for about 8 years before they decided to get married.

The engagement was full of ironies. It took place at Asha’s favorite restaurant, Lasagna House, where Mike had no intentions of going. Asha was supposed to bring him food back from the restaurant but since she had such a bad waitress who was taking so long, Mike had time to take a shower and get there before Asha even ordered her food. Asha’s parents, Jan and Mark Alexander, and a best friend of hers just happened to be at the dinner, which Mike was unaware of. The irony in that was that Asha was unexpectedly at her best friend’s engagement just months before. Ironically (again) Mike’s mother, Marie Garza, decided to tag along with him to the restaurant since she was hungry yet unaware that Mike had just picked up the engagement ring and spent 20 minutes having it cleaned. Once there, Mike gave instructions to their favorite waiter, Vinny, to place the ring box ON the dessert tray. Vinny then asked Asha if she wanted dessert (which she found odd since he was not their waiter) and she decided on something she usually doesn’t get, key lime pie.

Vinny brought the pie over and as she was about to dig in, she noticed what she thought to be aluminum foil in the whipped cream. It was her ring, placed IN the dessert instead of on top of the dessert tray as Mike had asked. Poor Mike spent all of that time having the ring cleaned to have it covered in whip cream. However, Asha was so excited; she just washed her ring in her water glass and uncovered her beautiful asscher cut solitaire. Mike got down on one knee and in front of Asha’s parents and best friend and his mother, he asked Asha to marry him. The final irony, the couple at the next table was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary! Mike and Asha decided to rent a home in Seagrove Beach, Florida for the entire wedding party, all of whom had driven from Texas. The wedding took place on the beautiful beach right across the street from their rental home. They held a multi-religious ceremony with an Apache-wedding blessing, Catholic and their own vows. It was small and intimate as they were surrounded by forty-five people that knew and loved them the most. The bride walked the sandy aisle to a unique, yet appropriate, song titled “I’m wilder than her” by Fred Eaglesmith, in lieu of a wedding march. She carried a mixed bouquet of white calla lilies and green roses. Although it was absolutely freezing, the sunset

and clouds could not have been more perfect. It looked as though someone had painted the scenery. Despite last minute and unexpected changes (the original ceremony officiate had to be replaced and Asha’s flowers could not be shipped in because there was a Taiwanese revolt!), the ceremony was overall perfect and was everything the bride and groom had imagined. Asha wore a vintage, low back, sand colored A-line silk gown, with one strap (in champagne tool) over the left shoulder. Her mother handmade a birdcage veil with fastener and peacock feathers. The eight bridesmaids wore chocolate brown dresses of their own choosing, while the groomsmen were dressed in khaki pants and light green shirts. All were barefoot.

The reception that followed was held at the home that they had rented. Their friend Kelly catered food. Guests enjoyed a vast variety of cake of which Asha believed there was more of than food. The bride’s cake was chocolate with fresh strawberries, covered by champagne fondant, and a dark chocolate ribbon at the base. Stacked on top was white chocolate covered, apricot jam and vanilla cake filled petit fours and green roses. Lastly, another square cake, vanilla with lemon and raspberry filling, covered with fondant, with ribbon at the base and petit fours on top. The groom had a New York style cheesecake covered in green roses and a Latte explosion cake with off white icing and chocolate striped straws. Guests were entertained by movies made by the bride and groom during the father/daughter dance and mother/son dance. Just about everyone gave a speech, as Asha says, “No stage fright in our crowd!” Entertainment included a live concert of the bride and groom’s friends, Mary Charlotte and Chad Boyd, who were an absolute hit! I-pod’s were deejayed by Chad Boyd and Asha’s brother, Rio Alexander, and others. After a fun filled night with their closest loved ones, Mike and Asha left their reception through a shower of flames as they ran through the arch that was used at the beach ceremony. In Asha’s own words, “This was a do it yourself wedding by the bride and her mother!! We should write a book I guess…” Following their honeymoon in Seagrove Beach, Florida, the newlyweds now reside in Bryan/College Station, Texas…home of Texas A & M University and the fighting Aggies! •

Dear Liz Dear Liz,

I am having a large beach wedding, with over 200 guests. Since I am inviting so many people, is it okay for me to print out the address labels for the invitations? Can I also get pre-printed Thank You notes for after the wedding? Even with all the advances in technology, a wedding invitation still needs to be a formal announcement. The address should be hand-written, even if you decide to not use a calligrapher. This shows that you took the time to personalize it, which is a nice touch for your guests. This is the same reasoning behind hand-written Thank You cards as well. Unless you are going on an extended honeymoon spanning months, the Thank You notes should be hand-written and include specific information about the gift. The only time to use pre-printed notes is if it would be the only way to send a prompt Thank You. That is ultimately the most important way to show your appreciation.

Dear Liz,

I have four bridesmaids who are coming for my destination wedding. Since they are already paying for their dresses, do I have to pay for their hotel and travel expenses? For a destination wedding, the wedding party and guests should pay for their own hotel room and airfare. However, there are ways to make this less expensive for them, especially in these economic

times. First, make sure to send out the Save-TheDates six to eight months in advance, so that they will have the opportunity to buy cheaper tickets. Also, talk to the hotel about booking a block of rooms at a cheaper rate. This way your guests can save on the room as well. If you are still concerned for your bridesmaids, you can cut expenses in other areas. Have a small, intimate Bachelorette Party or let them pick out their own bridesmaid dress (with your approval, of course). Your bridesmaids are there to support you. As long as you show consideration for their pocketbooks, they will know that you appreciate them.

Dear Liz,

About 100 guests are coming into town for my destination wedding. I want a small, nice, sit-down rehearsal dinner with just the wedding party and really close relatives. But, my mom thinks that it would be rude for me not to invite everyone since they are traveling so far for the event. Is that true‌is it wrong not inviting them to the rehearsal dinner? First, it is okay to want the rehearsal dinner to be small. Your mom just wants to be assured that you care about those coming such a long way for the ceremony. If you decide not to include the majority of the guests, then you should make alternate plans for them. You could make reservations at several local restaurants in advance, so that they will have options for a nice dinner on their own. You could also arrange an alternate dinner for them at a restaurant, continued next page

or you could coordinate an outdoor luau, so that your friends and family can get together. This would also allow you and your fiancé the chance to say hello and thank them for coming, before leaving for the rehearsal dinner. A third option is to host a small cocktail hour before the rehearsal dinner, so that your guests and can see you and enjoy appetizers before going out on their own. By offering these small concessions to your plans, your mother will see that you are indeed a caring bride, and your guests will agree.

spread the word about how much the two of you enjoy camping. This way, people will know that it is a pastime you both enjoy and do often, rather than just a passing fancy.

Dear Liz,

Before you talk to your mother about altering her dress, you should go to a seamstress and see what can be altered and at what cost. Depending on the type and age of the fabric, it may be difficult to alter without ruining the material or some of the details on it. Make sure it will be a reasonable task, before you decide to cut. When it comes time to telling your mother, make sure it’s clear that you want her permission to alter her dress. Give her a clear picture of what you would like to do to the dress, such has cutting it short or removing the sleeves, so that she can be reassured that the essence of the dress will still be there. If she is not comfortable with your suggestions, the best thing to do is just buy a dress that would be appropriate for your day. Let her know that you still appreciate her offer, and end the discussion on that. Pressing the issue further would only cause problems. •

My fiancé and I are really into the outdoors. We like to go camping, snorkeling, hiking, anything outside. Is it okay for us to register for camping equipment or is it tacky? When picking out items for your registry, it is important to remember that you are registering for a home for you and your fiancé. Whether or not the two of you live together beforehand, this is the primary purpose of a registry, and what many of your guests will expect. If you want to register for camping equipment, remember to do so sparingly, only asking for a couple of necessary items. This way those guests, who want to get you something unique and personal, will have the option to do so, and those who are more traditional can still be happy picking out house wares for the two of you. To help the chances of receiving these nontraditional gifts, your mother or bridesmaids should

Dear Liz,

My mom has offered to let me wear her wedding dress. It’s beautiful, but it is outdated, and there is a long train, which would get messed up at a beach wedding. How do I tell her that I want to alter it without hurting her feelings?

“What’s something

FunCool HipExciting

UNIQUE

I can include in my wedding?”

“W

hat’s something fun/cool/ hip/exciting/unique I can include in my wedding?” is an everpresent question with an ever-changing answer. In addition to the copious planning and coordinating that goes into my job as owner of the Destin based boutique wedding and event planning company, Mix Mingle Glow, I have to also keep a constant eye out for fresh ideas and inspiring products. Here are a handful of my new favorite tips and inspired thoughts: Interactive entertainment is really fun for weddings. People love to be entertained; to watch something. It spurs interesting conversation and creates an exciting vibe during the reception. Whether you hire a caricature artist for a couple of hours during the reception, or have hand tossed pizzas made and served during the cocktail hour, your guests will love the fun factor you have added to their evening! If you like the interactive idea of pizzas but can’t afford to pay for pizza chefs, The Pizza Dome ™ (www.pizzadome.net) is a fun appetizer idea for

your small wedding or rehearsal dinner. Create one large or six individual pizzas in a real brick and clay oven in just fifteen minutes. Serve the same things a new way. Everyone is looking for an alternative to the traditional wedding cake. Whether it’s cupcakes or dessert tables, there are certainly a lot of options. But who said anything was wrong with wedding cake to begin with? Ask any pastry chef and they will be happy to offer you so many choices in flavors, fillings and frostings, you’ll be in a sugar coma before you ever even take a bite! Serve your wedding cake to guests in martini glasses instead of the old plate-and-fork-routine and see if anyone asks for a single cupcake!

Don’t let your buffet look like the cafeteria lunch line! With so many gorgeous options in serving ware, there is just no excuse for the old “silver” chafing dishes on buffets anymore. Foods can be displayed and kept warm in beautiful dishes made of clay, copper and ceramic and will add to the décor of your wedding as opposed to detracting from it. Using items like vases, bricks, and flowers to conceal the sterno heating elements is a nice touch, too. A whimsical touch to your food stations or buffet is to use normal dinner and serving ware filled with lovely florals.

UNIQUE Creating and presenting a slideshow can be pricey. You pay someone to design a medley of photos and coordinate it with meaningful music, then showcase it with a projector, large screen and sound system. A fun alternative is to use digital picture frames loaded with themed photos and place them strategically throughout your reception space. All your dating photos playing in the frame at the escort card table; maybe a humorous collection of pictures of you and your beloved growing up, around food set on the buffet (think baby’s first strained peas, flour covered cookie baking and pie in the face at summer camp). Or photos of you celebrating with a lifetime of cakes set on the cake table. Guests can enjoy these mini-slideshows at their leisure, throughout the evening. Integrating natural elements into the details of your wedding day is easier than ever thanks to this beautiful Moss Ribbon. Add it to your place cards and programs for a gorgeous earthy look without the mess (and smell) of the real thing! Available at Grandin Road (www. grandinroad.com), $19/five rolls.

Fun

Fun, cute, affordable Save The Date cards are finally here! Moo Cards (www. moo.com) allows you to create personalized mini-cards ($19.99/100) that can

be also be used for favor tags, conversation starters, and so much more. Why settle for the refrigerator magnet Save The Date when you can send these? (although these can also be magnetized if you just can’t help yourself!)

Exciting

Popcorn is definitely a trend in food that we are seeing more and more of. I kept hearing about popcorn as the New Big Food, but didn’t really believe it until a recent trip to NYC. While eating out each night, no less than four different hip restaurants in the city had popcorn as an ingredient on the menu! Use it as a favor for your guests to enjoy at your wedding and if it doesn’t knock everyone’s socks off, send all the leftovers to me, and I’ll eat it for you. (It’s a service we provide.) Two great options are 479® Popcorn (www.479popcorn.com) for prepackaged to-die-for flavors and Dale and Thomas Popcorn for a yummy popcorn bar (www.daleandthomaspopcorn. com). Anything personalized is a unique and thoughtful gift for the Bride and Groom, but step it up a notch and have a poster designed and printed for that special couple and leave them feeling like a couple of rockstars! Amongst the oceans of uber-talented artisans you can find on the Etsy website, a sweet little storefront named ellothere will create a frame-worthy poster for $75 (they’ll even create an invitation version for you!). Personal Don’t forget your best girlfriends! Yes, you can buy them their wedding jewelry, or a cute little clutch. But give them The Little Pink Card and they’ll thank you for years to come. The LPC is a handy little personalized card with everything from their birth stone to their shoe size, their favorite candy to their anniversary.

Cool It’s not a card your BFF will keep for herself, of course. No, she’ll be tucking it safely into her sweetie’s wallet so he will never be at a loss when it comes to buying her that perfect something. Yeah, she’s gonna LOVE you for it! (www.thelittlepinkcard. com) And finally, in the midst of all the wedding planning, cake tastings and dress fittings, Miss Bride just might need to legally change her name on every official document known to man. Behold NameBirdie, a wonderful all-inclusive service that takes care of it all effortlessly for only $24.95, saving you a hundred phone calls to everyone from the Social Security

offices to the IRS (‘cuz you know how fun THOSE kinds of calls are!). (www.namebirdie.com) Whatever small details you decide to incorporate into your Wedding Day, be sure they are a true reflection of you and your fiancé. Just like the difference between the beauty of a model home and the comfort of a real one, you should use magazines and books for inspiration, but let the “real you” be what your guests remember about the specialness of the day. •

Lindsey Erin McCaskill and Klinton David Lay became husband and wife on November 22, 2008 in Jay, Florida.

K

Lindsay & Klint Lay

Klint and Lindsey were first introduced to each other through a mutual friend by the name of Deven. At the time, Lindsey was living on campus at the University of West Florida. Lindsey’s friend Deven was coming over to her apartment with a group of people. When Deven told Lindsey the names of the people that were coming over, Klint’s name stood out because about a week earlier another mutual friend had mentioned to Lindsey that she really needed to meet this guy. This mutual friend went on and on about how she thought that Klint and Lindsey would make a cute couple. Lindsey was not completely sold on the idea of meeting someone for a blind date but since the opportunity was there, she went for it to calm her curiosity. As soon as Deven introduced her group of friends to Lindsey, she was pleasantly surprised to meet “the Klint!” From the night of introduction on, they were great friends. About three months later, they decided to start dating. The couple dated for 5 ½ years.

During the spring of 2008, Lindsey was home visiting from college. On March 14, 2008, after having dinner with Lindsey’s dad, Klint and Lindsey went back to Klint’s house. Lindsey was called in to the computer room where Klint said that he needed to show her something. As she sat at the desk, Klint played a picture slide show of the two of them as “Someday, Some Morning” played in the background. Lindsey was completely oblivious to everything yet managed to sit still long enough to get through to the last picture, which was a picture of

Klint holding a ring….this confused her even more. As she looked over, Klint was beside her on one knee with the ring. The couple was officially engaged, it was perfect! The bride and groom were married in Lindsey’s childhood home where her parents still resided. Klint and Lindsey were married under an archway that Klint’s grandfather had made. Designs by Glenda provided the flowers in colors of green and cream. The bride walked down the aisle carrying a bouquet of cream roses mixed with chinaberries and other green foliage. The bridesmaids carried green hydrangeas. Lindsey wore a Pronovias mermaid fitted gown and was adorned in pearl dropped earrings. The bridesmaids wore chocolate, long strapless dresses with sweetheart necklines. The bride and bridesmaids dresses were found at The Bridal Loft in Pensacola, Florida. The groomsmen wore the traditional black tuxedo with black bowties.

The reception was held in the backyard of the ceremony location in a tent decorated with unique centerpieces and curly willow throughout. Lindsey’s dad collected old bottles, which adorned each table and added some variety and the feeling of “home”. Guests enjoyed food catered by Sue Hawthorne and Karen Davis of Milton, Florida and Chubby Haveard of Jay, Florida. The two wedding cakes were each 3-tiered squares with cream icing. Fruit was added to the bride’s cake for a simple and natural touch. The groom’s cake was chocolate with chocolate covered strawberries. Kents Special Events provided chairs, tables, linens, lighting and the tent. Klint and Lindsey’s IPOD provided entertainment, which was perfect because they were able to choose all of the music. Rae Leytham Photography captured all of the events of this special day. Klint and Lindsey are enjoying their new life together, residing in Navarre, Florida. •

Kimberly and Scott Mackenzie

K

Kim, whose mother side of the family is Filipino and Scott, whose family comes from the Shetland Isles off the mainland of Scotland, were formally introduced to each other through a mutual friend, Chris. While at Chris’ birthday party, Chris told Kim, “I have someone you are definitely going to want to meet.” He could not have been more right.

gosh, this is to someone named Kim, too!” Scott looked at her. Kim looked at him. She then quickly realized ‘that someone’ was her after skimming through the letter and noticing familiar words and sentences taken from her own poetry that she had written in high school. As Scott got down on one knee, Kim’s face lit up in the sunset and the rest is history.

While in San Diego, Scott originally planned to propose to Kim on Valentine’s Day in the Hotel California (which happened to be one of Kim’s favorite songs). However, the hotel turned out to be something different then expected so Scott took Kim sailing instead for the proposal. Reluctantly, because it was Valentine’s Day, he decided to wait another day before proposing, taking into consideration that Kim had always thought it was cheesy for couples to get engaged on Valentine’s Day. His final plan was to have Kim find a “message in a bottle” on the beach with a note in it. The two went for a walk and Kim found the note and replied, “Oh my

Kim and Scott chose to have their wedding at The Meeting House at Carillon Beach. The well-known Victoria Valpone, with Carillon Weddings, assisted the couple with their wedding details. Kim’s great uncle, Reverend Cesar Paniamogan, performed the ceremony. Readers were incorporated in the ceremony to read music lyrics, a poem by e.e. cummings, and Bible passages. Since Kim and Scott are such big Beatles fans, a close friend played Beatle tunes on guitar. Along with the Beatle theme, the couple used an actual Beatles record as their guest book. Scott’s mother, Mrs. Jean Abrew, his two sisters, Donella and Stella and his Aunt were each unable to attend due to severe

medical issues. However, a video webcast provided by IdoStream was available for viewing online for long distance family members in both Scotland and the Philippines. Nouveau Flowers provided the bride’s European inspired bouquet. Kim walked the aisle carrying a bouquet of amnesia roses with green calla lilies, lilac, green Santini buttons, purple tulips, blue thistle and green hypericum berries with fatsia leaves all bound together with Mackenzie patterned tartan ribbon. A kilt pin borrowed from the groom completed the look of her bouquet. Bridesmaids carried a bouquet of green anthuriums with purple tulips and fatsia leaves all bound together with the same tartan ribbon. The bride wore a form fitting ivory Allure gown with deep V-neck and back, with chiffon overlay, intricate silver beading and café/silver colored threading throughout the bodice, dress and train. Her veil was medium length in matching ivory with café lining encrusted with jewels at the comb.

Bridesmaids wore an empire style Kelly green Donna Ricco chiffon dress from Nordstrom. The groomsmen and two ring bearers wore traditional kilts consisting of Scottish National tartan kilts, dress sporrans, Argyle jackets and silver ruche ties. The groom wore a Mackenzie tartan kilt, dress sporrans, Argyle jacket and an ivory ruche tie. A strolling minstrel violinist, Carol Hayes, led guests from the ceremony to the reception that was held at the Bellview Park Green at Carillon Beach. Décor for both the ceremony and reception was provided by Nouveau Flowers. Two large displays of Bells of Ireland, lilacs, green anthuriums and lavender tulips all placed in large rectangular vases filled with red apples added to the ambiance. Guests were greeted at the entrance with a photo booth where they were able to take pictures with their own digital cameras using props such as boas, silk flowers and large sunglasses. They could then print the pictures off to use as souvenirs as well as to leave the pictures in a guest book with handwritten messages to the bride and groom. Tables in deep midnight blue linen and Mackenzie tartan ribbons were individually named after Kim and Scott’s favorite Beatles songs and albums. Special flowers were brought in from Kim’s great grandmother’s garden in Tennessee. The flowers were put into a crystal bud vase and were placed near the four tiered wedding cake provided by Rhonda Joodi with Confections on the Coast. The bride and her friend designed the intricate detail of the cake, which featured a silver “M” cake topper. Donna Townsend with Townsend Catering Company created an amazing spread. Guests enjoyed a Scottish menu of fish & chips placed in newspaper cones and lollipop lamb chops along with a special request from the bride, jasmine rice, to satisfy the taste buds of her many Filipino family members. Entertainment was booked through Gulf Talent Services & GTS Entertainment Group, Inc., which included classic rock music played by Latitude 29. The group also played special requests such as “Big Country” and “Message in a Bottle.” Scott’s brother and niece taught the band how to play a traditional Scottish beat, while teaching guests how to dance a Shetland folk dance called “Strip the Willow.” Female guests received favors brought in from the Philippines by the bride’s aunt and cousins. The gifts included genuine freshwater pearl bracelets. As the wedding festivities came to a close, Kim and Scott exited the reception through a line of guests holding sparklers. The sparklers ended at a golf cart that carried them off to the Carillon Inn. Kay Meyer Photography captured the memorable moments of the entire day. The newlyweds honeymooned in Seaside where they enjoyed biking and relaxing on the beach. The couple will reside in Ft. Worth, TX while Kim attends anesthesia school, which will include a brief move to Harlingen, TX. Scott will continue to travel back and forth to his job in Libya. Ultimately, the couple hopes to reside in Florida! • Vendor Contact Information: • Ceremony: The Meeting House at Carillon Beach • Reception: Bellview Park Green • Photographer: Kay Meyer Photography • Videographer: IdoStream

Ornate Hair Extensions by Elizabeth Link

H

air extensions can be an easy way to add length to your hair to create a beautiful, ornate updo for the Big Day. However, hair extensions may not be right for everyone, and if not researched correctly, can prove to be disastrous for a beach wedding or honeymoon. Here are some helpful tips that every bride should know before extending.

Types of Hair and Bonding Methods There are two types of hair for extensions: real and synthetic. Many upscale salons no longer use synthetic hair because of the lack of quality, but it is a less expensive option to achieve longer hair. Human hair extensions have become more common with an increase in women choosing to extend. Human hair extensions are more luxurious in quality, and will blend in better with your natural hair.

The hair can be attached through several methods, with the most popular ways being clipped in, glued in, or braided in. Clip on extensions can be a good, temporary solution if you just need a little more hair to hold in your veil. They are clipped onto your natural hair, near the base of the scalp. These types of extensions are perfect if you want a lose updo under a veil. These types of extensions can be removed quickly and easily after the ceremony, and are the ideal situation if you plan on swimming, snorkeling, or any other adventures on your honeymoon. Extensions that are glued in are bonded to the natural hair and scalp using a bonding agent. The glue is typically made out of Keratin, a chemical found naturally in hair and fingernails. Once the glue is applied, it is then bonded by heat to the scalp. The problem with using glue is that it can cause damage, such as

breaking and shedding, to the hair. It is also important to note, that if you are planning a beach wedding or honeymoon, you will have to stay out of the water. Both salt and chlorine water will damage the extensions, leaving you looking more like a bushy raccoon then a beautiful bride or newlywed. Bonding extensions are not typically the best option, but it can be the only option for brides with extremely thin hair. The third common method for attaching extensions is braiding them in with your natural hair. This process is the best and strongest method of attaching, because there are no extra chemicals to damage the hair. The main problem with braiding the hair in is that it may pull out some of your real hair. Not all hair types can support the weight of braided-in extensions, so it is important to consult a stylist in advance about the best method for you.

When to get them? How to maintain them? You should get extensions about 1-2 weeks prior to the wedding. If you are on a tight schedule before the Big Day, remember that it can take anywhere from 4-8 hours to have extensions put in. So, you are going to have to add that to your To Do List, and make sure it doesn’t conflict with any parties, fittings, or showers. Extensions must be maintained, so you will have to return to your continued on page 86

stylist every 8-12 weeks, for the upkeep. Depending on the type of extension, you may need to use a special shampoo and conditioner to keep the hair from looking matted. Therefore, if for some reason, you must get them months before the wedding, you will have to go in and have maintenance on them.

Cost If you are considering getting hair extensions, then they will have to be added into the wedding budget.

Extensions typically range anywhere from $500 to $3,000, depending on the type of hair, the length, and the application method. Permanent hair extensions will also require maintenance, which can run from about $100 to $300. Although extensions may be beautiful, they may require that you give something else up if you are on a tight wedding budget. Before you make the final decision about extensions, make sure to consult a stylist first. Many salons offer free

consultations about extensions, so you will be able to talk about what would be best for your hair type. You should also have your veil picked out before hand (if you are choosing to wear one), so that you and your stylist can discuss your wedding day hairstyle. The most important thing for any bride is that you feel beautiful on your Big Day. Whether you choose to get extensions, or go “au naturale,” your smile and radiance will truly be your most beautiful feature. • Small photos courtesy of www.hairextensions.com
