NEWS & NOTES ALL AROUND BRANDYWINE Grand Opening Ribbon Ceremony

for our newest community, Alexandria! Read more on pg.3

FROM THE DESK OF...BRENDA BACON It’s been a busy six months at Brandywine… development and business deals, our annual employee engagement survey, customer satisfaction survey for residents and families, census growth initiatives, Project ACE (more on that in a few) and our new opening in Alexandria, VA! Over 600 people came out to celebrate, Brandywine style. Virginia did not know what hit them! It was quite the party. So, it’s been a crazy few months, no doubt, and I admittingly have been deep in the business working on contracts (believe me, not fun), but took time to read the survey reports and all the anonymous comments, which were very insightful. Thank you for sharing and being open! So, what’s hot on my mind right now? You. Many of you know I vacation with family in Bethany Beach, DE in August, but always find myself in the work mix (hard not to). Brandywine is my heart, my blood... my family. So, you always come with me on vacation. And, yes, I surprised our two beautiful DE properties with a visit the other day. And, boy, was I impressed. The communities were impeccably clean and inviting. The team was happy and talkative. The residents were engaged and warm. A fabulous day! I was so proud of our leadership and our team members. And, I especially loved seeing you in action. That makes me smile and keeps me connected to our mission. With that said, I plan on making many trips around the Kingdom in the upcoming weeks to do just that. Why? I want to see you and hear from you.

If you are

It is no secret that our residents choose Brandywine because of what they see and what they have heard about Brandywine. That means what they have seen you do to ensure that our residents safe and happy.

I believe we do many things well with and for our workforce, but I want to learn how we can do even better.

at Corporate

Project ACE is an initiative I started in July, which CONGRATULATIONS! is an action-oriented task force on recruitment and retention at Brandywine. What is working? Donna Lapidus What is not? And what is the solution? Some Promoted from solutions are being rolled out now community by INVEST Coordinator to community. So, in the coming months you will Escapades Producer hear more about Project ACE, including efforts to at The Savoy markedly reduce callouts and eliminate the use Kenneth Kennedy of agency workers. We did not just choose you. Promoted from Chef to You chose us. We want you to continue to choose us. And… we want to welcome more quality individuals to join you, your team, your community and the company in changing lives.

BRANDYSTAR SPOTLIGHT Like all Brandywine communities, when it’s time to select a BrandySTAR for the quarter, it’s difficult to choose just one! Each community is filled with so many STARS! This quarter was no different for Moorestown Estates when they chose Musu Silla, Care Manager, as their second quarter winner! Musu sees the best in everyone and every situation. Her radiant, positive energy and her willingness to help out whenever, and wherever possible, is admired throughout the community by her coworkers, the residents and their families. She is never too busy to assist her coworkers, both in and out of her department. The residents and staff can find Musu smiling in the hallways and sharing her positive perspective on all situations.

Marilyn Morales, Nurse Educator, says that one of Musu’s best traits is the patience she exhibits as a Care Manager. She is very attentive to family requests and pays attention to the needs of the residents. Another wonderful trait is Musu’s ability to work through difficult and challenging situations with grace, while ensuring

that the residents and their families are pleased with the care and service provided. What makes Musu stand out? When she is not caring for her residents, you can find her cooking for family events at the community! Cooking is one of her favorite passions and she thoroughly enjoys doing so for large groups, especially family functions. Musu is very family orientated, and believes that her residents and her coworkers are as much her family as her own family here, in the States and Africa. The management team at Moorestown Estates have enjoyed watching Musu grow in her career over the last seven years and are proud to share that Musu has interest in advancing in her profession by attending nursing school to become a registered nurse. Her caring, nurturing attitude and quest to Go the Distance on any given day, regardless of what is taking place in the outside world, is a winning recipe for a Care Professional! On behalf of Brandywine, we look forward to supporting Musu on her journey to achieve great success in the years to come.

Congratulations Musu,

on being awarded the second quarter BrandySTAR!

Say Cheese! Guests smile for a photo.

“We’re extremely excited to bring Brandywine at Alexandria to Virginia,” Brenda J. Bacon, President and CEO of Brandywine Living, said as the festivities began. The newest six-floor community offers 116 beautiful suites, an indoor therapy pool, tap room with built-in fish tank pub, movie theater, beauty salon, internet lounge, luxury lounges and outdoor terrace patio featuring a brick pizza oven.

Jonathan Jabate (Housekeeper) graciously greets Brenda Bacon.

Guests dance to live music by Dr. Cheeko Band.

She said, “I would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in our celebration and our amazing team members. It is an honor to work alongside such caring and passionate people, whose top priority is seeing others happy. We are excited to be one of the newest additions to Alexandria, VA, where we can share and add to the charm and vibrant culture that our wonderful city has to offer.”

Yaaassss! Christian Randolph (Executive Director) enjoys the festivities on the patio.

Celebrating Years of Service at Brandywine… What is tenure? Tenure is career longevity - how long someone has worked at an organization. When individuals have worked in their roles at Brandywine for over five, ten, fifteen or even twenty years, it says a lot about the organization. Tenure is proof of true employee engagement and a big part of our culture here at Brandywine. The knowledge and commitment of those individuals who grow in their role as the company grows, says a lot about who we are and what we do.

NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH (SEPTEMBER)

Need to Talk. We’re Here. A PERSONAL STORY ON ADDICTION AND RECOVERY

Heidi and Sean

My son has a drug addiction. It’s been four years and everyday he is working hard to stay clean and rebuild his life. As a mother of an addict, I often felt hopeless and helpless trying to navigate the dark maze of addiction, while placing a protective shield over my son. In the beginning, I was ashamed and did not talk about it with others. I suffered in silence.

Heroin needs no introduction. It entered into our lives like a storm and continues to have a hold on not only my son, but on our family. As a mother, it’s hard not to think of what went wrong. He was reading at three years old, writing columns for the newspaper at ten, class treasurer in high school, Dean’s list, camp counselor, attended Towson University and the list goes on and on. A bright boy. A bright future. Drugs were not part of the plan.

SEASIDE POINTE

Our journey together included jail time, treatment programs, therapists and long-term recovery programs. There were many times that I needed support. I needed to share. I needed to yell. I needed to find ways to cope for the sake of my son, myself and my family. During that time of desperation, I decided to reach out to others in the community to openly talk about the opiate epidemic and my story. What started as a meeting at a local library, turned into the start of a non-profit organization, Worcester County Warriors (WOW) Against Opiate Addiction. My quest for self-help turned into a passion to help others. Now WOW is an active organization that provides education, awareness, support and navigation of resources to the people of Worcester County. Today, the organization has grown significantly with monthly support meetings, fundraisers, a 24 hour hotline (Warrior Angel line - 443.880.5943) and speaking engagements across the county. We have a presence on Facebook (Worcester County Warriors Against Opiate Addiction) and online (www.wocowarriors.org). I encourage anyone who is dealing with addiction themselves, or the addiction of someone they love, to reach out for help. Working at Brandywine allowed me to tap into the EAP (Employee Assistance Program) benefit. Part of the benefit is counseling support. I spent hours on the phone with a professional who helped me locate resources and helped me through a difficult time. It was an invaluable resource to me.

Heidi (Fomer Director of Community Relations-Seaside Pointe)

About Heidi Heidi McNeely joined Brandywine Living at Seaside Pointe in July 2008 as the Director of Community Relations and earned her RN degree during her time at Brandywine. She also pursued her Holy Yoga Instructor Certification (Christian Yoga) in 2016 and teaches yoga on Saturdays at Hudson Health Services, an inpatient drug rehab center. After 10 years with Brandywine, Heidi has accepted the role at Hudson Health Services as their Director of Nursing. This new path will allow her to directly impact the lives of those suffering from addiction. It is in total alignment with her experience as a mother of a recovering addict and her non-profit organization that serves her community and beyond.

September is National Recovery Month. With over 2,385 employees, many may be suffering in silence. We must join the force to raise awareness and to ensure our team members know that support is out there. The EAP program is a benefit to you that includes phone consultation 24/7 with licensed mental health professionals, referrals to supportive services and face-to-face counseling sessions (3x/year). Call 1-800-3567089 or go to www.MagellanHealth.com/member In September, Brandywine will provide information and resources that will be accessible at the community level for employees from www.samhsa.gov/ . Information can be a powerful tool to help someone suffering in silence. Need to talk. We’re here.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, 21 managers attended the Brandywine University course, Help! Make Me An Effective First Time Manager. The course reviewed top mistakes managers make, how to make the transition from peer to manager, understanding what employees need and want and how recognition matters. The group participated in interactive activities and group discussion. Part of our mission as a learning organization is to ensure that our team members have the right training at the right time in their career. It’s never too late to learn. It’s never too late to change for the better.

Who says class can’t be fun? Faithe Bland (Director of Community Relations) and Mostafa Bekheet (Reflections Coordinator) have fun in class

We are proud of the tenure of our employees and number of internal promotions in the company. A show of hands indicated about 85% of the attendees were promoted into their management position at Brandywine. Keep growing with us. Keep reaching to do more and be more. Brandywine University is your vehicle to personal and professional growth. Lessons taught to managers, but also helpful to everyone are the following….

Dear Ms. Bacon, My sister, Cindy Johnson, and I want you to know how fortunate you and we as family members and our mother as a resident - are to have Frank Evegan as an employee. He’s more than an employee - he’s a living, breathing member of the Brandywine Living at Toms River community who sincerely cares about the well-being of each and every resident.

Faga and Frank TOMS RIVER

We can say this after having an hourlong meeting with Frank yesterday regarding some concerns that we had about our mother. Not her care per se that’s been exemplary - but the way she was being viewed by one of the staff.

Frank listened - and I mean truly listened - to our concerns and addressed each one not only professionally but with compassion. He understood exactly where we

Hello Cindy, Please share this with all the caregivers. A year has flown by since Mom left this earthly plane. Though I miss her greatly I am rich in happy memories of her. I think often of those who saw to her care, eased her worries, lifted her spirits, brought her joy in small ways.

Dante and Mary LONGWOOD

were coming from and thoroughly explained the plans for change moving forward. You can tell that this is not just a job to him and that he considers every resident a family member. He knows that each resident is a human being that deserves to be treated with dignity and respect each and every day. He is well on his way to training every staff member in the ways of exemplary customer service. Cindy and I feel that it’s through Frank’s leadership that Brandywine Living at Toms River is friendly and caring to every resident, family member, and guest. We could go on and on about more of his great qualities including his ability to hone in on ways to make daily life, activities, and procedures better for everyone - residents, staff, and family members. Too often people are quick to criticize and slow to praise. My sister and I wanted you and the rest of the Brandywine Living community to know that Frank is a keeper!

Regards, Kathi R. Evans & Cindy Johnson

I hope you continue to find joy in your work and know that, even if no one stops to tell so, you do make a difference in the quality of lives of many who are in your care. Ever grateful.

Regards, Janine Shailer

My mother, Elizabeth Murphy, has resided at Brandywine Living at Wall for over six years. She recently returned to Brandywine after a two month hospital/rehab stay. Helen Henn, RN and Wellness Director, has gone above and beyond with her insightful, helpful and caring manner in regards to my mother’s care. WALL (Please know my mother has not been the easiest person to manage over her six years at Brandywine). Over the two month period, Helen checked in with me regularly and even went over to visit my mother in order to facilitate getting her back to Brandyine faster. On the final day (Friday) before her transfer back to Brandywine, Helen came in extra early to make sure everything was in place for her transfer.

YOU CAN TEACH SKILL, BUT YOU CAN’T TEACH

HEART!

Helen and Elizabeth

Kathleen and Sylvia Voorhees

Kathleen “Kathy” Cassidy, Reflections Care Manager, at Voorhees goes above and beyond to make her residents and co-workers happy. Sylvia, a resident at Brandwine Living at Voorhees for four years, sometimes gets anxious and upset in the early afternoon. She is immediately relaxed when she sees her favorite Care Manager, Kathy. The second she sees Kathy, her face lights up, she relaxes and becomes less anxious.

I am so thankful and appreciative for the support and care Helen Henn has provided both my mother and me and I want you to know she is an outstanding asset to Brandywine Living at Wall.

Ashley Cruz, Escapades Producer says, “Kathy has a way about her that reminds Sylvia of a mother - she’s warm, trusting and beautiful inside and out! I believe this is why her residents love her and connect with her so well.”

Sincerely, Carolyn Farr

It’s not only Sylvia who’s blessed to have Kathy as a Care Manager; other family members have moved their loved ones under Sylvia’s care because of the connection and compassion she shows others.

Our Mission

Brandywine Living will provide our residents with the highest quality care in the most appropriate setting based on an individual’s needs while respecting their individuality, independence and dignity.

Our Core Values •

• • •

We believe that every resident has the right to be treated with dignity and respect and has the right of self-determination. We believe in delivering the best quality service possible to those who have put their trust in us. We believe that honesty, integrity, caring and thoughtfulness are as important as the health care we provide. We believe that our residents are active, joyful and fascinating individuals who will continue to learn and grow each day and will contribute to our learning and growing as well. We believe that great care is a team effort where ideas, collaboration, and mutual respect for each team member’s efforts and contributions are essential to the result.

A resident’s son has seen improvement in his mom since she’s been in Kathy’s care. “As opposed to having a one-sided conversation, we now have interaction which is reminiscent of the past. This is due not only to Brandywine’s well-planned memory care activities, but also to the exceptional care and attention shown towards my mother by Kathleen. My mom actually sees Kathleen as a friend, someone she can trust and depend on. That trust is a key element in my mom’s growth.” It’s quite apparent that Kathy’s heart is felt by not only the residents, but also families. Something you simply can not teach!
