NEWS & NOTES ALL AROUND BRANDYWINE
ISSUE 41 | SUMMER 2019
Team, Please take a minute and read these few quotes from the hundreds we received in our recent Customer Satisfaction Survey: Our parent is treated with great respect, compassion, and care. We know she is safe and well-cared for. She loves living at Brandywine and participates in as many functions as possible. Most residents are companionable and socially active, so our parent has friends to whom she can talk and enjoy meals with. She enjoys the outside excursions and loves playing cards and doing crafts. Her room is quiet, as are the corridors - peaceful, but positive and pleasant. It’s always fun to arrive to the sound of music in the lobby and to see the residents enjoying music, doing sitting down exercises, or sing-a-longs. A happy, caring, exceptionally beautiful environment.
We love the amazing staff. I am so comforted by the loyalty of the staff. Many people are still at Brandywine Living at Brandall Estates that I met when I first toured the facility six years ago. This speaks volume about the place as a real community and home for my mother.
Brandywine is like the resident’s family. There is a lot of love that goes around to residents and staff here. I think Mountain Ridge is the best facility in the area and I am so glad I chose this facility for my mom, who has resided here going on 7 years this August.
They take care of me. They are my family. It is small enough so the staff knows most of the residents personally, but large enough that there are lots of people for Mom to interact with on a daily basis, both staff and other residents. It’s like a huge house rather than a “facility.” Also, and very importantly to me, the nursing care is excellent.
At the beginning of the day and the end of the day, it is YOU who make the difference to each and every one of our 2,580 residents and their families. Bravo, Brandywine.

BRANDYStar SPOTLIGHT Meet Robert ‘Mike’ Musgrove. He’s a native of Maryland but moved to Delaware many years ago and resides with his longtime girlfriend, Wendy Ford, Care Manager at Seaside Pointe. Together, they parent six children. Mike joined Brandywine in April, 2017 as the Assistant Environmental Services Director. Previously, he owned his own business as a mason and wanted a change in career. He’s made quite an impression.
ROBERT ‘MIKE’ MUSGROVE
ASST. ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DIRECTOR
FENWICK ISLAND
Cynthia Bassett, Business Office Manager, mentions, “Mike is very handy, especially with our computers and servers”, Eileen Bennett, Executive Director, says, “I feel like we should have a 1.800.CALL.MIKE number; he has a good knowledge base of everything and is our go-to guy for
things we may not know”, and Brad Lynch, Environmental Services Director, echoes, “Mike is always willing to help and is GREAT with electronic issues.” Mike was honored to receive the 2nd Quarter BrandySTAR award, partly because he could display it next to Wendy’s certificate. Wendy is a former 2018 BrandySTAR and up until he received this honor, there was a friendly BrandySTAR competition in their home. Don’t think that Mike is all work and no play. He is multi-passionate. He loves photography and fishing. As a matter of fact, he recently participated in a fishing tournament in the Indian River Inlet.
Congrats, Mike!

Leadership Excellence T PAMELA HERNANDEZ
VICE PRESIDENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES
LEADERSHIP SERIES Maria: Tell us about your journey to senior living? Pamela: Oh, well, it was through 69 different airports! Maria: Huh? Pamela: Prior to joining the Brandywine family, I oversaw human resources for 69 different airports for American Airlines. I sometimes didn’t know whether I was in Buffalo or Sarasota, but I was always troubleshooting problems with employees. Prior to that, I worked in the human resources department of a hospital. Both were long-standing and challenging positions. But then I decided that I wanted to be closer to home as my youngest child was finishing her last couple of years in high school. What I found though was not only a fascinating job with a fast-moving company, but also a family. Maria: What’s different? Pamela: So much. Listen, Human Resources is pretty structured around compliance, rules, handbooks, benefit eligibility, etc., and of course me and my team are very focused on that. But Brandywine’s first question is always how do we care as much for our team members as we do about our residents and families? How can we help someone to succeed? How can we make sure those great team members get to work alongside other great team members. That is so crucial. Our job is not only to hire and mentor the best, but to make sure those who don’t live up to our standards are moved along to someplace where they may be happier. Maria: Right. What about advice for team members? Pamela: Choose to be happy and follow your dreams. You chose a job where you have an opportunity to make a difference every day and change the lives of our residents, so Be Passionate. Be Present. Be Patient. It matters. Show up every day to make that difference and get from that what also fulfills your life and spirit. And then go do something crazy that you could have never imagined doing like go see Gladys Knight perform one night and run a marathon and climb the wall the next day! I did that a couple of weeks ago!!! Can you believe it?

Training & Engagement KENSINGTON JOHNSON
Kensington has been with Brandywine Living at Moorestown Estates for 17 years. He was still a teenager in high school when he started as a part time Dining Assistant! Over the next five years, Kensington received several promotions from prep cook to line cook to lead chef. He was accepted to The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and earned his associate’s degree and promoted to Assistant Director of Dining Services. “It’s a great feeling to be recognized for your talent and work ethic and I’m happy that my Director of Dining Services saw that and offered me the position.” He served in that position for about three years, and was later promoted to Director of Dining Services. “So many team members, managers and supervisors along the way have made such an impact on my career, inspired me to be and be better and taught me so much about the assisted living industry. Above all else, I’ve learned to always keep an open mind and never restrict myself to any one thing. I am looking forward to what the future has in store for me...at Brandywine.”Kensington Johnson Kensington will start his EIT journey in September 2019 through the BCE.

Jeff Manger & Chad Duca at The Gables
Director of Dining Services, Jeff Manger and Chef, Chad Duca, teamed up to paint one of their storage areas. They took the initiative to get the supplies and give the room a fresh look. They are a “dynamic duo” at The Gables!
Katina Ruiz, new Care Manager at Wall, really went the distance during a power outage! While on break, she went to Dunkin’ Donuts and brought back coffee, so residents and team members could have a fresh, hot cup of coffee! Way to go, Katina! Katina Ruiz at Wall
MIGUEL MURTEIRA
Miguel Murteira (Director of Dining Services) has been with Middlebrook Crossing since September 2018. He began his culinary career as a dishwasher and earned his degree in Professional Cooking, Baking and Catering from the New School in Manhattan. His love for food and people comes from his roots in Portugal where he was raised by his parents who owned a tavern in Lisbon. Miguel’s dish will be featured in the Fall/Winter ‘19 resident menu.

Letters From Family On behalf of my mother, Rita and other family
members, I just want to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all members of the staff of Brandywine at Reflections. Your commitment to each and every resident is inspiring. Throughout mom’s residency, you demonstrated kindness, compassion, respect, and love. Not only to mom, but to our family as well. I have often referred to you all as “God’s angels.” It takes a unique individual to follow the career path that you have chosen. It was a difficult decision to place mom in a facility, but you all helped the transition greatly by knowing that mom was safe and well cared for. For this we will be eternally grateful. God bless each and every one of you and please know your efforts are definitely appreciated!!
Donna Ziemba Reflections Team
Dear Marilyn,
I just had to write to say thank you and “god bless you and your team. Louise Gorneau (my mother) is now a lucky resident at Brandywine Senior Living at the Gables. She has been there for almost two weeks, and could not be happier! Your team, starting with Faithe (Director of Community Relations), is beyond outstanding, truly welcoming, extremely knowledgeable, dedicated, and very caring. Truly, everyone I have met has gone out of their way to accommodate my Mother and make her feel welcome and special. Just to acknowledge the team members I have met so far:
8
and TV set up, cart assistance, teaching Mom how to turn on the air, hanging a clock, and much, much more to make her feel welcomed and comfortable. I must mention Maureen-the weekend nurse- who was extremely diligent in dealing with my Mom’s anxiety, sleeplessness and blood pressure issues to get her through the first weekend, until she saw Dr. Patel and the medications could be properly adjusted. Pat, the second floor housekeeper, has gone out of her way to care for my Mom. My Mother talks about her like a new best friend! And, at meals, she has been purposely seated with a very friendly group!
Anna at the Front Desk has been very friendly and informative, answering questions, delivering messages, generally guiding us.
I hope you will share this letter with your management, and also your team who has welcomed my Mom into “the family” with open arms. I must say, I am starting to feel a little jealous!
Ken helped greatly on move in day, including the phone
Sincerely, Stacy L. Fox

Reconnecting in Haddonfield...neighbors again!
Anne (resident) moved into Brandywine Living at Haddonfield. She has been a long-time resident of the borough for 64 years, where she raised two children, Linda and Art, with her husband. Rhonda (Escapades Expert) just like Anne, has lived and raised her family in the borough for 25 years. When these two ladies met for the first time at the community, Anne said with excitement, “My gosh, I can’t believe it’s you! I haven’t seen you in years, you haven’t aged a bit!” Rhonda joined her journey and immediately said, “How are you? How’s the family?” They were instantly ‘reunited’ as old friends. Who did Anne think Rhonda was? We’re not quite sure but, we’ve got a strong hunch. Anne may have remembered Rhonda as a little girl and later as a young woman. Rhonda’s best friend of over 18 years, lived next door to Anne and Rhonda’s backyard backs up to Anne’s son’s yard! As Anne’s daughter, Linda, says, ‘It’s a small world.”

•
•

We believe that great care is a team effort where ideas, collaboration, and mutual respect for each team member’s efforts and contributions are essential to the result.
Rhonda says, “I feel truly blessed to have a bond of friendship with such a wise woman filled with laughter and love for family and friends.” Rhonda spends time with Anne reminiscing. Their friendship is stronger than ever thanks to Rhonda being a part of Anne’s journey. It’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest impact.
Our Mother’s Hands by Karen Viglione
These are the hands that touched us the moment we were born These are the hands that loved us from first breath These are the hands that nurtured us and kept us warm These are the hands that disciplined us and taught us right from wrong These are the hands that guided us and showed us the way These are the hands that cheered us on These are the hands that prepared countless meals, holiday feasts, and set the table that we gathered and shared our lives around These are the hands that held ours tight and let us know everything was going to be ok, even when it wasn’t These are the hands that pushed us on the swings, taught us to ride a bike, catch a ball and build sand castles and memories These are the hands that helped us with our homework, book reports and life’s script These are the hands that held our children and created a lifelong tapestry binding us for eternity These are the hands that have aged with grace and continue to join and lead our family These are the hands that now reach out for our unconditional love, touch, guidance and stability for the journey ahead These are the hands of our Mother

ROUND THE KINGDOM Pen Pal Buddies Reflections Coordinator at Wall, Julie Cassidy, previously worked at Toms River for over nine years. During that time, she built a strong bond with resident, Ann Vincelette. Julie was promoted and moved over to the Wall community. Ann missed her so much that she wrote her a letter to keep her updated on what was going on with her. When Julie received the letter, she wrote Ann back. They have continued their pen pal letters over the past few months and stay up to date with each other. Both Julie and Ann are very excited when a letter arrives for them!

A Haddonfield Garden
Thanks to Chef Linda Christianson, Haddonfield will enjoy organic vegetables again this summer. Chef Linda planted yellow and red tomatoes, eggplant and okra. Okra is her favorite because of the beautiful flower that blooms before the okra is formed.
