Blue Fuchs were recently on the receiving end of an unusual request from the BBC who approached the company to discuss the possibility of supplying a Fuchs Material Handler to feature in a forthcoming episode of their biggest global brand - Top Gear. Blue Fuchs MD - Terry Hughes, takes up the story, “We had an enquiry from the Top Gear team to supply a Material Handler which would be used in an episode of the series. Every week they feature machinery or equipment outside of their usual focus on cars and they were keen to assess one of our machines in action to see what it could do. Therefore, after an initial discussion the BBC team came down to Fuchs to make a selection and watch a demonstration of the MHL360 at our HQ in Portishead, Bristol. We were then invited to Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey where the programme was being filmed.”

The Fuchs MHL360 material handler: As the UK dealer for the Fuchs brand, Blue stand firmly behind these world class material handlers. Fuchs have more than 125 years of innovative design in material handlers and with their focus on key sectors of the materials handling industry, these machines provide innovative and powerful solutions guaranteeing a dynamic material flow. With a wide range of machines available, and an attachments portfolio that matches the material handlers’ areas of application in terms of scope and diversity, the machines are perfectly suited to a broad range of applications in recycling, scrap handling, port and timber handling. With these wide-ranging Fuchs tool options, the materials handling workflow remains consistently well managed.
The game: With a 6.00am start the Fuchs MHL360 duly fitted with a 5-tyne grab was delivered to the film location for preparation; followed by the presenters who arrived at 9.00am. Before filming commenced Pat James from Fuchs had the task of providing 45 minutes of training for the chief presenter Matt Le Blanc. Pat James, commented, “It was obvious from the start that he had some experience as he picked it up very quickly and showed he was
It was just brilliant, Matt had complete control over the machine and his driving expertise shone through, as time and time again he successfully grabbed the ‘missiles’ and hit the target with devastating results. The Fuchs machine certainly played its part and demonstrated its versatility and effectiveness in what was a very entertaining game. Terry Hughes, Managing Director, Blue Fuchs
a very good operator. Evidently Matt has a big passion for heavy machinery and it was clear throughout the filming.” With training complete and a confident Matt in the driver’s seat it became clear that the plan was to initiate a game of bowling with the Fuchs machine throwing scrap fridges, scrap washing machines and even scrap cars at the target – a line of sheds. With the film crew in place and the drone in the air, filming commenced and it wasn’t long before Matt was launching objects in the air with amazing results. Following the successful filming this feature was shown in the Top Gear programme on Easter Sunday and will subsequently be broadcast in 212 countries. Claimed to be the BBC’s biggest global brand the sales and merchandise are estimated at more than £50 million a year. www.blue-group.com

Electric v diesel material handlers? Electric gives you less noise, ultra high efficiency and instant torque, not to mention the ease of power supply.
World’s first SHL885 electric Fuchs material handler is delivered to CEMEX CEMEX UK have recently taken delivery of the world’s first Terex Fuchs SHL885 material handler, supplied by Blue Fuchs.
limestone is transported via three conveyors, totalling 320 meters in length, to the recently constructed batching plant to help create ready mixed concrete.
One of the ‘Big 5’ aggregate suppliers in the UK, CEMEX generates around £775 million in sales and employs over 3500 people in the UK. Two key areas of the business are the production of readymade concrete, as well as the supply of aggregates. CEMEX offers a wide variety of aggregate, from high-PSV and decorative stone, to sand, gravel, limestone and rock armour via a national network of quarries, depots and wharves.
The electric SHL885 material handler is the complete package. Featuring a cranked boom and a massive 23.6m of reach, CEMEX’s new machine utilises the REXROTH mobile hydraulics system, making for perfectly smooth movement. The hydraulics are powered by a mighty, yet economical electric motor generating 250kW at 1500 rpm. In fact this is one of three electric motors installed within this world’s first machine. The second 22kW motor supplies pilot pressure for machine operation and the third motor, providing 7.5kW is used to power the air conditioning system. All the electric current is delivered via a double cable roll which is connected to a switchboard located on the machine’s undercarriage. As you would expect from Terex Fuchs material handling machines, this electric SHL885 incorporates a hydraulically height adjustable cab with a maximum eye level of 8.8m from the quay. The cab is also horizontally adjustable by up to 2.2 m and is installed with sound and heat insulated panoramic windows for the ultimate all round view.
The £1.5million investment in the new Terex material handler is connecting these two divisions within the CEMEX organisation. Ships carry limestone aggregate from the Raynes Quarry in North Wales to the Dagenham Wharf plant, where the new 95 tonne Fuchs material handler is located on a jetty. The Fuchs crane is attached to the jetty via two rails which allow the machine to seamlessly glide up and down the side of the ships, collecting the limestone via a 3m3 Arden Grab and depositing it within a 50 tonne capacity hopper. From there the

The machine sits on tracks which are similar in design to train tracks, but with a flatter profile to give more interaction with the machine itself. The tracks are virtually the entire length of the jetty, meaning the Fuchs can access all areas of the ships which will allow the machine to handle the projected 250,000 tonnes of material arriving each year. Commenting on the purchase Glyn Richards, Operations Manager at CEMEX said, “While Blue Fuchs offered us a great deal, the decision certainly wasn’t made purely on price. We were very impressed with the machine and we see how popular the Fuchs equipment is becoming up and down the river.” CEMEX decided upon an electric engine as opposed to the more common diesel for a number of reasons. Firstly it was the environmental and safety benefits. There is much less noise from an electric material handler plus they are more efficient. The electric option also means instant torque, something a diesel engine cannot match, no matter how good it is. Finally there was also the ease of fuel supply. Fixing an electric supply to the jetty was much more feasible than constantly transporting diesel out to the machine.
We are delighted that CEMEX choose Fuchs. This is a highly customised machine, which required all parties, ourselves, Terex Fuchs and CEMEX, as well as Quality Freight Services who delivered the machine, to work very closely together. This process has clearly demonstrated how Fuchs equipment can be adapted to perfectly suit a customer’s requirements. Pat James, Key Account Manager, Blue Fuchs
Due to the size of the machine the machine was built at the Fuchs factory in Germany, tested, then disassembled again for transportation to Rotterdam. The machine was then reassembled at the Port before being transported via barge to Dagenham. Waiting for high tide due to the weight of the machine, the Fuchs material handler was then lifted into place by crane.

Westminster Waste vote BlueMAC plant a big success Blue London have recently supplied a BlueMAC plant to Westminster Waste for their new site in South East London. Westminster Waste was set up in December 2010 by Managing Director Dominic Moule, and has grown swiftly over the last 6 years, now employing over 70 staff. Originally the business began processing waste at a compact site in Bermondsey, and while this site is still utilised by the business today, their main operation is now at a new 3 acre site in Charlton. Processing C&D waste is the core function of the business which is brought in by a fleet of 30 Westminster Waste vehicles and also third party ‘drops’. Current volumes stand at around 1,500 tonnes per week, with the waste coming from across South East London and Kent. The new plant has allowed the business to recycle a much higher percentage of material. The wood waste is shredded and screened via a Doppstadt AK510K shredder and Powerscreen Warrior 1400X screen on site, to create a biomass material, while others materials are sent out for further processing and baling. The small amount of material that can’t be recycled is sent for recovery as RDF and the process is much more automated and significantly less labour intensive than previously, meaning overall costs have been reduced.
The Process C&D Material loaded into the hopper which takes the material via conveyor to a 10m long trommel -50mm is extracted from the trommel Long pieces within the -50mm are recirculated via a long piece separator back to the +50mm line The -50mm is taken under an overband magnet to extract the ferrous metal and then to a SPALECK flip flow which extracts the -10mm fines The remaining 10-50mm moves to a BlueMAC air separation unit to split the light and heavy fraction The +50mm from the trommel is taken to a 7 double bay picking line with 1200mm belt All recyclable materials are extracted by the manual sorters into the bays below The remaining material moves under and overband magnet before going into a Westeria 1000 Airstar which separates the remaining light and heavy fraction into two bays below

The new plant has allowed us to process and recover a lot more material from the C&D waste stream. It’s the simplicity and the fact that should we have any issues, we know BlueMAC will be there to keep our equipment running. This is especially critical for us as we work 24 hour shifts. A mighty successful open day for Blue Scotland Blue Scotland recently held a highly successful Open Day in association with Central Demolition, with over 100 visitors attending to see what Blue Scotland had to offer. The day started at Blue Scotland’s new 3.5 acre facility where a huge array of static equipment was on display from Blue’s range of suppliers including Doppstadt, Powerscreen and EvoQuip. Also on show was the spare parts facility, service department and refurbishment bays as well as their state-of-the-art offices. Having enjoyed a bite to eat and a coffee, the visitors were all transferred by bus to Central Demolition at Bonnybridge for the ‘live’ demonstrations. Central Demolition is a long-standing customer of Blue Scotland, in fact the company bought both the very first machine from Austin Carey when Blue Scotland was initially set up, and the 1000th machine in 2015. Here the tour started with each piece of machinery described by a specialist as it worked through a process starting with a Doppstadt 3060 F Type processing wood waste being loaded by a Fuchs MHL 331. This was followed by more action in the EvoQuip area with a Bison 120 and a Colt 800 being put through their paces, with the specialist describing the process and the relevant features of each machine as the tour proceeded.
Blue Scotland open day visitors were treated to live machine demonstrations processing tonnes of materials over the course of the day

In the next area, a Powerscreen Premiertrak 400 and a Chieftain 2100X were busy processing C&D waste and were ably assisted by a brand new Cobra 230 Impactor which fed the BlueMAC plant, with any material being further reduced by a Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak. All material was then fed to the wash plant and finally stockpiled by a Chieftain 1400 screen. In the waste sorting area visitors were treated with the sight of a Fuchs MHL 331 and MHL 340 who demonstrated their agility as they handled and sorted tonnes of material for processing.
It was a very successful event and a great opportunity to show our visitors the machines in action and the support we provide. People took time out of their busy schedules to attend and on behalf of the Blue Team I would like to thank them for their time. Also, a big thank you to Ross Craig and the Central Demolition team who gave us their incredible support and the provision of their site for the demonstrations. Austin Carey – MD - Blue Scotland

The Doppstadt AK635K is an exceptionally powerful machine, yet one that is very quiet due to the electronically controlled engine
Boden’s Wood Recycling turn up the power with the AK635K from Blue Central One of the UK’s biggest and most established wood waste recyclers, The Boden Group have recently taken delivery of a Doppstadt AK635K Compact high speed shredder, purchased from Blue Central. The company provides wood waste collection services throughout the UK and across all industry sectors, from small wood packing recyclers up to UK’s biggest transfer stations. Collections are made via a range of different methods from 50 cubic yard skips to 120 cubic yard walking floor trailers for the larger scale operators. Boden’s invest heavily in their business and have become a market leader in the production of small animal and equine bedding, supplying their products all over the world. The new Doppstadt mobile wood shredder has been brought in however for a different area of the business, to create a high quality biomass chip, which is used to power biomass boilers for a range of SME’s up and down the country. The AK635K is an exceptionally powerful machine, yet one that is very quiet due to the electronically controlled engine. The machine comes with a 4m long moving floor hopper and a 7m long discharge conveyor allowing for extensive stockpiling. A 2.5 tonne flail drum is at the heart of the machine, powered by a Mercedes Benz 12
engine. It rotates at around 1000 rpm and incorporates 36 free swinging flails. A patented load sensing material feed system protects the AK635K wood shredder and the Boden’s machines comes complete with the optional overband magnet to remove any ferrous metal from the waste stream. Within this particular process the highest quality, clean waste wood is initially preshredded to 50mm before it goes into the Doppstadt. This shreds the wood still further to 30mm chips, ideal for the biomass boilers it powers. In addition to waste wood the AK635K is idea for a variety of shredding tasks including green waste, yard waste and biowaste as well as pre-shredded logs and roots.

The Warrior 2100 incorporates Powerscreen’s unique, proven Triple Shaft technology, synonymous with their heavy duty mobile screens. This innovative design ensures that the 16’ x 5’ screen box is ultra-efficient yet maintains a high level of throughput
Marshalls turn the new Powerscreen Warrior 2100 into a positive income generator Marshalls Plc have recently invested in a new Warrior 2100, purchased via Blue Machinery Central to work at their various quarries throughout the North West. Marshalls is one of the UK’s leading hard landscaping manufacturers, and has been supplying innovative concrete products and premium natural stone to the construction, home improvement and landscape markets for almost 130 years. The Group operates quarries and manufacturing sites throughout the UK and has a workforce in excess of 2,000 people. Initially Marshalls took in a Warrior 2100 on demonstration to gauge its capabilities, throwing it into the deep end by tasking it to process problematic waste piles. ‘Scrapings up’ collected over the winter were set aside for a number of years before drying out over the summer. The mobile screen however made light work of this heavily mixed material, separating it out into -40mm,

40mm-100mm and +100mm. The <40mm was put through a wash plant to create a saleable, clean 40mm, 20mm and 10mm product as well as a grit sand and builders sand. The oversized was re-crushed before this also went through the wash plant. After just three days, the team at Marshalls saw the clear value of the machine and placed an order for the exact same specification.
We were extremely impressed with the machine in demo and had no hesitation in placing the order. We are currently using a 50 tonne excavator to load the Warrior and we have had to turn the screen down as we couldn’t load it quickly enough. Ian Manley, Site Manager, Marshalls Plc
you would expect from Powerscreen, there is also a focus on fuel efficiency with its low engine running speed. The Warrior 2100 incorporates Powerscreen’s unique, proven Triple Shaft technology, synonymous with their heavy duty mobile screens. This innovative design ensures that the 16’ x 5’ screen box is ultra-efficient yet maintains a high level of throughput. The extreme screening acceleration means the Warrior 2100 is a class leader, particularly in sticky scalping applications, such as this one at Marshalls. Whilst the Warrior 2100 mobile screen fits within the same transport envelope as other machines in the 16’ x 5’ class, it’s proved to outperform other single shaft 16’ x 5’ mobile screens. This particular specification is fitted with fingers and a 40mm deck as well as chains to slow down any large oversized material. As
The new machine has now been working for around three weeks, with the objective to clean up the overburden from the quarry, from which the primary material, sandstone, is being extracted. Previously there was a cost to Marshalls to move the overburden, however, not only is this cost now being saved, but the screen is also creating a saleable stone from the recycled overburden and hence turning a negative cost into a positive income generator. As there is thousands of tonnes to be processed, the machine will pay for itself in a very short period of time. The machine will work in its currently location before being moved around to deal with the overburden at various Marshalls quarries meaning its ease of operation and set up are also key benefits.

Crushintons Ltd take first ever EvoQuip machine in the South East Crushintons Ltd, based in Kent have recently purchased a new Bison 120 Jaw Crusher from Blue Machinery London to process the construction and demolition waste that comes into their site from local builders or via the company’s grab lorry. Whilst Crushintons have been established for 11 years, and have a strong reputation in the East Kent area, they in the main deal with smaller projects meaning a compact, yet highly powerful, EvoQuip Bison 120 mobile jaw crusher was the perfect solution for their operation. The company supplies high quality recycled aggregates, crushed stone and hardcore, as well as clean crushed concrete, an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to virgin material. Crushintons also supply plant equipment for hire to recycle construction waste for re-use on site, helping to keep transportation and material costs to a minimum. 16

The Bison 120 has been designed for small to medium sized operators and for projects where versatility, manoeuvrability and transportability are of key importance. It is compact enough to fit inside a container for transport, and robust enough to withstand the toughest of applications whilst achieving large production volumes considering its size. The mobile jaw features a ‘680mm x 400mm’ single toggle crusher that can be adjusted hydraulically using the remote. This remote control, which comes as standard on the Bison 120, is a particular key feature for Crushintons as it means owner, Mick Oatridge can control the Bison from the excavator cab used to load the crusher for fast and simple set up. The Jaw is driven hydraulically offering the operator the ability to reverse the crusher to clear a blockage as well as being able to run in reverse permanently for sticky applications such as asphalt. The material from the crusher is screened to extract the fines leaving a clean -40mm and +40mm. The recycled products are mostly used for subbase and drainage, going out across the county and into London.
The Evoquip Bison 120 mobile jaw features a 680mm x 400mm single toggle crusher that can be adjusted hydraulically remotely, a key feature as it can be controlled from the excavator cab used to load the crusher for fast and simple set up
These machines are ideal for the South East of the country where space is at a premium. The machines are easy to move around site and the rubber tracks are an ideal feature considering the environments these machines are likely to work in. The ability to adjust the jaw setting whilst running is a fantastic feature, as is the ability to run in reverse. Matt Scott, Sales Manager
We are comfortably crushing 60tph of material via the new Bison 120 jaw crusher, which is a much higher volume than via our previous machine. We are limited for space within our yard, and the projects our equipment is used for tend to be driveways and small building projects, so the compact machine is ideal for our requirements.
