As well as a general update, the aim of the structural improvements was to make the offices more ‘open plan’ allowing the various functions within Blue Spares to sit together, rather than being spread across different rooms within the building. It will also allow our sales and procurement teams to be located adjacent to one another, improving communications and enhancing teamwork. Ultimately the new set up will bring a collaborative approach to both our sourcing and customer relationship programs.
We want to promote customer visits to our Blue Spares site in Warrington. Our Spares facility is unique within the industry and illustrates how we invest in supporting our customers over the long term. I would encourage any customers wanting to see first hand how we manage their accounts and the depth of our stockholding, to speak to their Blue Machinery Salesman, who I am sure would be delighted to arrange a visit. Fortress bites in the city After a comprehensive evaluation of products, renowned Birmingham based NFDC demolition company City Demolition have just taken delivery of their first Fortress FS25R scrap shear. 2018 is a very significant year for the City Team with them celebrating the milestone of 30 years trading in the Demolition Sector. The 2500kg Fortress shear ticked the boxes on flexibility and performance and brings a new dimension to the armoury for City. Comprehensive field trials saw the FS25R cutting material that previously would have been completely out of bounds for a shear of its size. With the upper and lower jaws of the shear being machined from a solid block of 6” Swedish Steel, the Fortress combines huge tip and apex forces that are normally associated with tools considerably bigger and heavier. The big gains mean that City now have a tool that has flexibility to work with their EC380 high reach machine right through to their 25-42 tonners. On cutting applications the precision of the piston motors means that the operator has gained increased efficiency and tonnage.
The build quality of the Fortress Shear is clear to see, however we wanted to evaluate it performance. What we have found is that it actually has exceeded our expectations. We purposefully put it to work on a couple of applications thinking it may eventually find its match but it came through with flying colours, we are very pleased with our investment. Mark Doyle, City Demolition Managing Director
Securing the business with a prestigious customer like City Demolition is a great feather in our cap. We look forward to a strong working relationship going forward”. Mick went on to highlight, “The Fortress shears have the pedigree to give our customers a new dimension in the scrap handling side of the business. Mick Reeve, Murray Plant Sales Manager

In the past, Blue attend Hillhead with personnel working from the Powerscreen stand. This year however, the business purchased an area within the Powerscreen stand, allowing us to showcase a Blue Spares display, plus a substantial range of Murray Plant equipment, including Rammer hammers and grapples, Fortress shears, Pladdet grabs and Allu screening buckets. In addition, we also had a Wear and Spares stand, displaying a range of wear parts suitable for equipment from a range of leading brands. Hillhead 2018 took place over three days, with hardly a cloud in the sky throughout. This without doubt helped increase visitor numbers
and the event proved to be a big success for Blue. Not only did it provide the salesmen opportunities to catch up with customers all in one place, but it also offered a great opportunity to hold discussions with potential new suppliers as Blue looks to continue with its ongoing growth strategy. Of course it also provided a great opportunity for the salesmen to sell equipment, and they certainly achieved that. Eugene Donnelly made a couple of deals, including one with Collards for a crusher, and Murray Plant achieved their sales target for the whole event by close of play on day one. The success of Hillhead won’t just end there of course, numerous leads were also taken by the salesmen who have no doubt been following up with potential customers since then.

Three major Scottish customers choose Powerscreen for the first time
Grange Quarry, Barrachander Quarry and Miller Plant have recently chosen Powerscreen equipment for the first time, having previously been loyal Sandvik customers. Miller Plant provide contract crushing and earthworks contracting services nationwide, as well as owning and operating their own quarries. Barrachander Quarry is an independent quarry situated on the west coast of Scotland and is capable of supplying large scale infrastructure and renewable energy projects with high quality aggregates as well as heavy plant hire and contract crushing. Grange Quarry also supply quality aggregates throughout Scotland and the North of England, as well as mobile concrete solutions, tipper and truck mixer hire and technical solutions. The machine of choice for all these customers is the Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak. This mobile cone crusher has been designed for direct feed applications without the need for pre-screening on clean rock. At the centre of the machine is the Automax® cone crusher, providing both excellent reduction and product cubicity for the creation of quality aggregate and sub-base material. Hydraulic release capabilities incorporated within the 1000 Maxtrak ensure that any un-crushable material moving in to the chamber is discharged safely. Made on a heavy-duty chassis and track frame the machines come with a dust suppression system as standard and are fitted with Powerscreen’s Pulse Telematics system. Pulse offers key information via an app, including GPS location, tonnages, start and stop times, cone settings, fuel consumption, wear ratings, maintenance status, operating hours, and much more. Even though the machines have only been in a short time, the customers are already noticing the benefits over their predecessors.

All three of these customers had been using competitor machines for many years, meaning they knew those machines inside out. For these guys to move over illustrates the quality of Powerscreen as they had to be notably superior in order for them to make the switch. As always at Blue Scotland we appreciate their business, it is great that they buy-in to our philosophy of exceptional aftersales support as well as the sale of quality machinery. Dermot Donaghy, Sales Manager at Blue Scotland
Ian Miller, Managing Director of Miller plant highlighted that the 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher was ‘offering increased production and quality of finished product’. Calum McCrae, Director at Barrachander Quarry highlighted improved fuel efficiency as well as more production and better shape. Calum also commented “The customer service from Blue is second to none. Sales Manager Dermot Donaghy is always available, and we have access to Owen Gourley, Blue Scotland, Technical Manager 24/7, which is a big thing for us”. Finally, Stuart Dodd from Grange Quarry stated, “We are really impressed both with the shape of the material coming off, as well as the feed size which is an improvement over our old machine”. Stuart also went on to say, “The benefit of working with Blue Scotland this time around is that they have more guys on the ground for back up and support”. The machines will be working in a variety of capacities, including tertiary crushing to create an asphalt aggregate, making MOT Type 1, creating sub-base, as well as working with screeners to make single sizes and even on hire for windfarm development projects.
The Rammer RCC21R cutter crusher attachment features two powerful cylinders and 360° rotation, making it the ideal choice for both standard and high reach demolition projects.
Powerful Rammer cutter crusher makes demolition work easy Metro Deconstruction have recently taken a Rammer RCC21R cutter crusher from Blue Group Company Murray Plant to help demolish an old nursing home in London. The attachment features two powerful cylinders and 360° rotation, making it the ideal choice for both standard and high reach demolition projects, and Metro, who offer a full range of demolition services from complex asbestos removal and full deconstruction projects to simple strip outs and site remediation. Other features of this cutter crusher are the heat-treated pins and brushings, the bolt on, symmetrical cutter blades as well as the fact that it is made from HB400 steel.
Metro’s philosophy is to purchase the best equipment to ensure the job is completed as efficiently and effectively as possible. It is therefore testament to these attachments that Metro chose Rammer. Jack Miggin, Sales Manager at Murray Plant
Commenting on how the attachment is coping, machine operator Simon Barden from Metro commented, “It is certainly a great bit of kit and is making my life easier. On the back of this cutter crusher we have ordered more Rammer equipment from Murray Plant which will also be arriving soon”. www.blue-group.com

Compared to Westminster Wastes’ previous diesel shredders, the Doppstadt AK540VE gives off a drastically reduced amount of heat. As the plant is contained within its own shed to protect the material, this is a major health benefit for the workforce.

Westminster Waste invest in electric For wood waste processing, the benefits over over diesel can be substantial in certain instances. Westminster Waste, which only began trading in December 2010, has recently installed a new wood waste processing plant incorporating a Doppstadt AK540VE electric high-speed shredder at their 3.6acre site in Charlton, South East London. This is the second recycling system involving Blue Group equipment purchased by Managing Director Dominic Moule in recent times, following the installation of a BlueMAC plant to process the C&D waste in 2016. A key benefit of the AK540VE is that the main drive, scraper floor and feed-in drum are precisely coordinated ensuring perfect synchronisation of the machine and maximum efficiency. There is also a continuous, yet steady, infeed of material due to its load sensing technology, all of which are critical to Westminster Waste as they look to achieve a high specification biomass material from the plant. One of the reasons for Westminster Waste’s exceptionally strong growth since inception just under 8 years ago is their focus on ensuring they have the right pieces of equipment to do the job now, and in the future. And there was a number of reasons why the electric Doppstadt was the ideal choice in this instance.
The insurance company likes it, due to its health and safety benefits, as it is much less likely to catch fire than a diesel driven machine, and the clients like it, due to the quality of the product it’s creating. Dominic Moule, Westminster Waste
Looking at it from a very basic level, the machine has fewer moving parts as it’s not mobile, so it actually means less can go wrong or needs to be replaced. A further reason is the heat given off. The plant is contained within its own shed to protect the material, and last year, before this plant was installed, temperatures were getting up to 50ºC, due to the previous diesel shredders, screens and handlers all under the same roof. So, imagine what the temperatures would have been like in there this year had the electric machine not been installed! The electric high-speed shredder will also reduce running costs due to electricity being a lower cost then red diesel. The plant is working 6 days per week. It processes the higher grade for two days, and is then fully cleaned out with the lower grade then running through the exact same system for two days before the cycle starts again.

Blue Group Restructure At Blue Group, we have enjoyed a significant period of success over a prolonged number of years, developing our customer base, product offering and business infrastructure, and this continuing success story has seen us grow our annual turnover to levels now fast approaching £150 million. At the heart of this growth has been a strong emphasis on our local and regional businesses. These regional businesses allow us to be not only geographically close to our customers throughout the consultation and sales process, but also to ensure that our sales professionals are more aware of the local market and therefore each individual customer’s specific needs. In addition to this, local offices mean that aftersales back up is close at hand, so engineers can be on site in a very short period of time, minimising any machinery downtime. In line with this successful strategy, the decision has been taken for all product ranges currently being sold by Blue Machinery Fuchs Ltd, to be sold and serviced through our five core regional businesses - Blue London, Blue Southern, Blue Central, Blue Scotland and Blue Spares. These products include the Fuchs range of Material Handlers, The Taurus Shear Baler Range, the E-Crane range of cranes, and the ZB Hammer Mills. Furthermore, spare parts for these machines will now not only be stocked at our dedicated spares facility in Warrington, but also at each of these regional offices, meaning improved access and an improved service for our customers.
This change took place on 1st September and our existing customers will have been contacted by their new local business partner to further explain the new structure going forward. Pat James and Chris Mathews, both long-serving members of the Blue Fuchs sales team with an abundance of knowledge and expertise, will continue to support the sales and technical teams at each of the offices. Of course, a key focus of Blue Group is industry leading customer support, so our existing Fuchs engineers will also continue to service our loyal customers and will be supported by even more factory trained service personnel regionally. Should your business have a current formal service or R & M contract in place with Blue Machinery Fuchs Ltd, this service will continue uninterrupted and we will shortly be making contact with you on an individual basis to clarify how and by which Blue business this will be managed going forward.” The current MD of Blue Machinery Fuchs Ltd, Terry Hughes, will be taking up a new position as Product Director of Blue Group to help coordinate overall product strategy across all our ranges.

Precision fast material handling: two can play at that game Bendall’s Metal Recycling in Gloucester takes on its second Fuchs MHL350 in less than a year Family owned Bendall’s Metal Recycling Ltd have recently purchased their second Fuchs MHL350 material handler in less than 12 months to undertake a full range of tasks at their site in Gloucester. The business is currently run by brother and sister team, Rob and Lucy but was initially set up back in 1997 by father Haydn Bendall. Today the company is busier then ever at their 3 acre site, which has led to the purchase of the new machines, as the company takes in scrap from a wide area, even reaching in to South Wales, as well as having a number of national contracts.
Previously we had a D Series Fuchs material handler and we certainly noticed the difference with this machine. Initially I was working it at only 70% power until I got used to its capabilities. The other key feature for me is the cab and controls. We are able to work in these machines for 40-50 hours a week due to the comfort, and they are extremely user friendly. The Bluetooth also means I can still take calls and manage the business from the cab. Rob Bendall, Co-owner, Brendalls Scrap Recycling
The first machine was purchased in 2017 as a replacement for the previous Fuchs machine, purchased back in 2008 by Haydn. While other machines were considered, the performance of the old machine meant Fuchs were clearly favorites. Add to this the huge improvements in design, comfort and certainly power between the D Series previously used within the yard and the new F Series, it didn’t take much for Rob and Lucy to realise that the MHL350 was the right choice.
It’s always good to see such a progressive company such as Bendall’s see that Fuchs equipment are leading the way in material handling. These machines just keep working, day in, day out without any hassle or downtime, which I know is extremely important at a busy site like this one. Pat James, Blue Group salesman
The machine offers an impressive 16m reach and boasts a powerful 160kW engine. It also incorporates the new cab, which won an iF Design award in 2017. The cab was designed specifically for handling machines and offers convenient access through a unique sliding door. The windscreen has a negative slant for a better view and the whole unit raises up to offer visibility up to 5.6m. The cab is also soundproof and offers exceptional comfort, keeping operators happy and productivity high. Other key features of the Fuchs MHL350 material handler is the joystick control, 7” multi-functional touch display and reversing fan, which not only offers enhanced cooling performance but also reduces dust within the intercooler, (water) and oil cooler. One of the most noticeable differences between this F Series and previous models however is the power. The high-output 160-kW turbo diesel engine and powerful hydraulics operating in a notably efficient dual-circuit system ensure that even heavier loads are handled with precision and speed.

New Powerscreen Metrotrak
for Lanz Group
Leading Waste Management Company Lanz Group, who have various sites in Berkshire as well as two in Maidenhead and one at Heathrow, have recently purchased a new Powerscreen Metrotrak mobile jaw crusher from Blue London, a company they have been working with since Lanz bought their first Powerscreen Powertrak from Eugene Donnelly back in 1994. Lanz is a third generation family business, set up in 1943, and now provides a comprehensive waste management solution for local businesses. These include skip, roll on/roll off, grab, tipper, sweeper and wheelie bin services. In addition to this extensive range of services, Lanz also take great pride in going the extra mile for their clients, offering a dependable, personal service that is always flexible and responsive for their loyal customer base. Following strong growth over recent years, Lanz were looking to purchase a crusher, having previously hired for many years. Following extensive market research, they selected the Powerscreen Metrotrak for a number of reasons, including it’s size as it is small enough to work at their Colnbrook site near Heathrow Airport and also due to the fact that it is very quiet when processing. Other key features of this class leading crusher include a hydraulically adjusted, fuel efficient direct drive chamber as standard, meaning users benefit from an ability to quickly and easily change finished product size with minimal running costs. The machine also incorporates a stepped self-cleaning grizzly feeder, a fully skirted product conveyor up to the overhead magnet and a grizzly bypass and fines chute. Furthermore, with operators such as Lanz now demanding machines which are easy to service and maintain, the Metrotrak offers exceptional maintenance and access via centralised hydraulics and electrics as well as excellent internal access and platforms. Lanz spoke to a number of other companies before making the final decision on which machine to go for, including Mr Gary Short, Managing Director of The Shorts Group, who highly recommended the Metrotrak crusher.
It is always a pleasure to work with Douglas and the team at Lanz. The Metrotrak perfectly suits their requirements, particularly with the site being so tight at Heathrow. Eugene Donnelly, Blue Group Director
Metrotrak is a truly The machine will be working in a number of locations, including the company’s sites at Maidenhead and Heathrow, so ease of transportation and short set up times was of key importance for Lanz, as was highlighted by the company’s Recycling Manager, Simon Marks. “It’s a very versatile machine and as it is under 30 tonnes can be transported easily between our depots”. Of course it’s not just about the machine, it’s also about the relationship Lanz has with Blue Group, as company owner Douglas Hepworth goes on to describe, “I’ve been friends with Eugene for many years, meaning there is a great deal of respect between us. We have a good working relationship with Blue who have proved to be a very trustworthy company”. The machine is crushing concrete and brick brought in to the yard to create a 6F2/6F5 or alternatively screened to create a Type 1. These products are then being used as a building base, for road construction or as hard standing.

FDS Grab Hire purchase Warrior 1400X from Blue The origins of FDS began in 2001, when business owner Franco De Simone set up FDS Building Services, a company that undertook small to medium sized construction projects in the Cambridge area. The business naturally grew to a point where they were subcontracting a lot of services including grab and plant hire, as well as spending significant amounts on material such as aggregates and soils for the various types of building and construction projects. At this point it was decided that the company would purchase a new 1.5 acre site with scope for aggregate bays, offices and a workshop, allowing them to bring in larger amounts of aggregates in bulk such as gravel, hardcore and sand etc to store and call off as and when it was required, thenshipped to sites on smaller and sometimes more practical vehicles. The company also increased their fleet to incorporate some mini excavators, dumpers and forklifts and then a 6 wheel grab lorry to reduce third party overheads and generally allow the business to undertake all their own services and become self sufficient. This evolving business however, did not stop there, with an ever expanding fleet of new machinery and trucks to now include 8 wheel tippers and grabs, larger plant weighing up from the 1.0 ton mini excavators to 30 ton steel tracked machines, a small fleet of telescopic fork lifts and other lifting equipment, FDS was soon supplying other local builders, developers and landscapers as well as DIYers with material and plant hire, which ultimately resulted in the business splitting in to two distinct parts, FDS Cambridge Ltd which is also known as FDS Grab Hire and Quarterway Construction Ltd.
18
Call 0345 217 8755 Email sales@blue-group.com
Quarterway Construction remains the construction element of the business and has expanded in to a new build and developing market, with FDS Grab Hire focusing on material removal and supply as well as both operated and self drive plant hire to both the trade and public. Overall this makes the companies a self-sufficient, one stop shop for the construction industry in and around Cambridge. Quarterway Construction are constantly undertaking building and construction projects in the area, using FDS to supply aggregates and soils as well as machinery. As part of their overall business philosophy of making themselves self sufficient, FDS started to look in to purchasing a mobile screener, to screen the material extracted from their building projects and coming in to their site in Ely via their own muck-away vehicles. They did have an aging screen with two way split but this was not serving their requirements, and would more often than not require a double pass to produce a saleable material. The business was also sometimes hiring a larger screen to cope with the peak periods, but to maximize the cost effectiveness of the hire, they were stockpiling large volumes, meaning movement around the site became very challenging.
The Powerscreen Warrior 1400X mobile screen offers improved performance and lower operating costs, as well as easier serviceability while boasting outstanding reliability.
The new machine not only produces saleable material, it also keeps the waste piles down and space within the yard for further expansion.
Franco and the team looked at a number of machines as part of the process but decided on the Powerscreen Warrior 1400X for a number of reasons. Franco explains, “We had experience of Powerscreen though our hires and the operators were always impressed. I don’t have a lot of time to research. Everyone I know, recognize and respect within the industry is running Powerscreen, so in all honestly, I jumped on that. Another reason is that I almost class Powerscreen machines as a liquid asset. The residual value will be high, if ever I decide to upscale, I know I will have plenty of people interested in taking the 1400X off my hands”. The Powerscreen 1400X is aimed at businesses looking for a heavy duty, well-built machine that is versatile and remains easy to transport. This mobile screen offers improved performance and lower operating costs, as well as easier serviceability while boasting outstanding reliability. Economy has been a major focus in the design of this machine, with reduced fuel consumption being achieved through a lower engine running speed at 1800rpm. A number of media solutions mean that the Warrior 1400X is highly efficient in scalping, screening and recycling applications, making it an ideal machine for FDS Grab Hire, and it can process mixed waste including green waste, soil, concrete, wood and asphalt. The fact that FDS Grab have purchased the machine means that the it can work when required. So not only does it produce saleable material, it also keeps the waste piles down and space within the yard for further expansion.
People within the trade are already asking me if I have any regrets with buying the 1400X. I reply with Yes - only one! And that is, not buying one sooner! Franco De Simone, FDS Building Services
The machine will mostly work at their main yard in Ely, but the fact that the machine is easy to transport was a further key consideration in the buying process. The mobile screen can be moved to site for the processing of material to be reused within a construction or remediation project on the same site. This results in both cost and environmental benefits for the builders and local community. FDS Grab Hire have worked with Blue in the past, purchasing a Hartl crusher bucket for their JS220, and while considering the purchase of a shredder for the green waste coming in to site. Franco highlighted his previous experience with Blue as well as that for this deal. “Blue came across as a good, honest firm and they have helped us out in the past wherever possible. It was nice to see the same engineer come out to our yard to set the 1400X up that had previously come out to set up the Hartl and Doppstadt, which says a lot about the company I think”.

Raising awareness for Cri du chat syndrome Blue Group’s Sally Elson who works from our Blue Central office as PA to the Group Directors has recently been raising awareness, through a ‘carpool karaoke’ video, of a rare condition called Cri du chat syndrome, due to her son being diagnosed with the condition in January this year. Sally and her two-year-old son Cooper appeared on the video alongside other affected families. French for ‘cry of the cat’ due to the cat-like cry of babies affected, the condition is also known as 5p− syndrome due to the disorder meaning children are born without part of ‘chromosome 5’. It leads to mobility and speech issues and affects around one in 50,000 new-borns, but Cooper’s particular case
of ‘mosiac’ Cri du chat – meaning only around half of his cells are affected – is among the most rare and unfamiliar in the world. In fact there is only 10 other children on the planet known to be in a similar position to Cooper.
Watch and share the Carpool Karaoke video - scan the QR code
Sally and husband Paul have struggled to cope with the lack of support and information surrounding Cooper’s ailments, due to the rarity of what he has. Now, the family is joining others to raise awareness of the condition in lieu of an organised support system.
The first Powerscreen on display at Blue Central Blue Group have set up the model Powerscreen MK1 screen in the boardroom at our Central office. The model was purchased as part of an auction with all proceeds going to charity. The model is even functioning with the belt moving up the conveyor.
