ALVIN TWISTED CLAYTON TRUTH
M
onths ago I wanted to try my hand at abstract but change is difficult. But when the Mueller report dropped it made the change very easy,” recalls artist Alvin Clayton about his new works. “I was like, I’m not looking at the news any more. I turned off the news and went directly to my studio and started this series.” Clayton doesn’t intend to change opinions about this administration, “I understand there is another view as well.” Like the work he titled “American Scream”, this collection reflects the reality he is feeling. Using his artistic skill for immediate emotional release is in itself is a 180-turn from the function of the art that established Clayton’s reputation. A graduate of Mount St Mary’s University, Clayton lived the luxe lifestyle as a fashion and campaign model with the Ford agency throughout the 1980s. His transition into restaurant ownership began at the swank Los Angeles restaurant called Georgia, co-owned by actors Denzel Washington and Debbie Allen. A decade later, Clayton and a few celebrity investors brought Southern-Caribbean fusion cuisine to diners in Westchester. While Clayton, originally from Trinidad & Tobago, maintains his vibrant palette in his new works, he has chosen to not paint in the patient, methodical style of his Matisse-inspired portraits of Caribbean life and jazz performers, that are in the impressive collections of Ken Chenault, and actors CCH Pounder, Don Cheadle, and Sunny Hostin, to name a few. His urgent interest in participating in the conversation around the most turbulent US presidency in recent history is triggered by the feeling of being stifled. “My oxygen was being cut-off. These paintings give me power and control again, I feel fearless.” “As an immigrant who chose to be an American, I take the responsibility of the Constitution seriously.” Portraits: SeanDrakes.com Artwork © 2019 Alvin Clayton
