The Meads Primary School
We are The Meads... Getting better everyday at everything we do.
HEADTEACHER’S WELCOME On behalf of the staff, the School Governors and the Local Authority, I would like to welcome you to The Meads Primary School. Here at The Meads, we believe that education is a partnership between home and school and we look forward to continually strengthening our relationship with you as your child moves through our school. At The Meads we celebrate each child as an individual with unique needs, aspirations and beliefs. We aim to give each child the opportunity to flourish and develop through a nurturing, creative and engaging curriculum, enabling them to take responsibility for their own learning. We hold all children in unconditional positive regard and believe that every child that walks through our doors is capable of great things. We want to be a school where children are brave and independent; where they hold strong values for themselves, other people and their environment. We want children to feel happy and safe, to be curious and kind, and to experience learning that becomes irresistible. As such, we are all committed to providing the best possible educational and pastoral experience for each and every child that comes here. We are proud of our school; we look forward to getting to know you, to you and your child becoming part of The Meads family – to our school becoming your school. We are confident that your child’s time here with us will be enjoyable, successful and memorable. Welcome to The Meads.

OUR ETHOS
The Meads is a values based school. Core values are promoted through all aspects of school life. Values essential to developing self-respect and regard for others, and for making a positive contribution to society and the wider world, are discussed and explored with children in lessons, in assemblies and in everyday interactions. Values such as respect, resilience, tolerance, and empathy form part of our programme. We strongly believe in making our school a central part of our community and in giving children the skills and understanding to make a positive contribution to that community – Values-based Education is crucial to this. As part of our approach to Personal, Social, Health and Emotional education, and pupil well-being, we endeavour to teach the children about the structure of their brains, the ways in which their brains learn and about how to use this understanding to self-regulate their responses to challenge and adversity. Our ‘Mind-Up’ curriculum encourages children to be mindful and reflective through daily ‘brain-breaks’ and regular lessons that promote curiosity, enthusiasm, optimism and joy. Linked to this is the development in the children of a ‘Growth Mind-set’; the belief that, with perseverance, persistence, patience and practice, (and an understanding of how we learn) anyone can excel at anything. All our staff model and promote the qualities and attributes needed to develop and maintain a growth mind-set and the culture of the school is one which encourages hard work, effort and learning from our mistakes.

Our curriculum is intended to be relevant and irresistible to our children.”
ETHOS CURRICULUM & VALUES REVIEW Our curriculum is broad and balanced, engaging and fun, and provides well for both the physical and mental well-being of our children. Ensuring a thorough coverage of each National Curriculum area, along with both Religious and Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education, our curriculum is dynamic and distinct and leads to high quality outcomes for all pupils. Subjects are taught both discretely and as part of themed topics, designed to enthuse children’s interests and provide an opportunity for them to completely immerse themselves in their learning. Each topic is introduced by a ‘Super Starter’ - a visit, trip or other special event intended to engage the children from the very beginning. This engagement is maintained during the course of the topic by fun and interesting lessons, as well as further ‘Wow Factors’ in the middle and at the end of a topic, with the ‘Fantastic Finish’ often serving as a purpose for the work undertaken throughout. Our curriculum is intended to be relevant and irresistible to our children; a curriculum through which mastery of the ideas, concepts, methods and strategies taught becomes inevitable. It is supported by our ‘88 Things To Do Before I Leave The Meads’ programme, a list of experiences the children will have throughout their time with us, some of which will occur as part of the curriculum itself, some of which are more unusual or unique. Our creative and exciting curriculum is intended to ensure that our children become confident and thoughtful learners, responsible citizens and valuable members of society, with raised hopes and aspirations for their futures.

A TYPICAL DAY AT THE MEADS When your child starts with us, they can expect a nurturing, stimulating and enjoyable experience from the moment they walk through the doors. A typical day starts with our Morning Rituals – routines intended to give every child the best start to the day possible. Children are greeted in every class by up beat music and a morning challenge designed to engage them in learning straight away. Our Open Door Policy gives parents the chance to accompany their children into classes on a regular basis, in order to settle them before registration, after which one of three daily ‘brain breaks’ and an assembly on the Value of the Month is followed by morning lessons. These are carefully planned by our highly skilled teaching staff to deliver learning on the basics of reading, writing and mathematics, providing for the needs of all and engaging every child in a challenging, relevant and fun way. Lunch time, during which the children can opt for a delicious school dinner cooked on site by our award winning catering team, is followed by afternoon lessons, when learning in the Arts and Music, Humanities, Computing and Technology and Physical Education generally takes place, planned within topics that make the most of opportunities to impart knowledge and practise new and transferable skills. A wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities, including football, netball, rugby, roller skating, athletics, cookery and gymnastics, is offered throughout the year, both before and after school, and we also provide a breakfast club every morning. Children at The Meads are happy, enjoy their learning and demonstrate strong values every day. The Meads – we’re not just good – we’re brilliant!
