ABOUT US PATHFINDER

SCHOOL DIRECT

Our alliance is based at Archbishop Holgate’s School a Church of England Academy situated three quarters of a mile from York city centre.

School Direct is a school led training course which blends together ‘on the job’ in school training with the theoretical research led practice undertaken at universities.

We have a large partnership of both primary and secondary schools in York, North Yorkshire, Leeds and the East Riding.

All of our courses take a school year to complete and lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

This enables us to offer a variety of placement contexts and provide a truly rounded teacher training experience. Enquiries or visits to the teaching school are most welcome, please email: lthompson@archbishopholgates.org or call: 01904 411341 to arrange a visit.

We firmly believe that the in school training delivered by our fantastic partnership of schools, combined with the academic rigour embraced by our university partners, provides a great formula for training outstanding teachers of the future.

PATHFINDER Teaching schools are nationally designated by the Department for Education as hubs of outstanding practice who bring together groups of schools to enhance the training and development of teachers at all levels. We are first and foremost a school who serves our local community, we do however have a passion for training the teachers of the future. Since our designation as a teaching school in April 2014 we have successfully trained more than 180 teachers and currently have 67 training with us this year.

Pathfinder works with three different university providers. This allows us to create bespoke training routes for different subject areas, drawing on the individual expertise of specialist staff from each university. We have worked with all our HEI partners for many years and have developed a true partnership which helps to ensure all your training needs will be met.

WHY CHOOSE US? One of the major reasons for choosing Pathfinder was because of the way the course is structured, it is a blended approach to teacher training combining the best bits of a school’s direct programme with a PGCE course. The partnership between the University and Archbishop Holgate’s School ensures that you get the best elements of an outstanding school and a well revered Russell Group University.

I had numerous reasons why I wanted to teach! I feel passionately about making a difference in young peoples’ lives, especially ensuring that equal opportunities are given to each and every pupil. By being an effective teacher I can transfer my love of history and enable pupils to achieve, giving me professional fulfilment and job satisfaction. This is a feeling that cannot be matched in any other career setting.

The training experience is a unique and worthwhile challenge which pushes you academically and mentally, but thoroughly prepares you for the rigours of the teaching profession.

I am really looking forward to starting my teaching job in September. The idea of having my own classroom and classes is so exciting! Due to the high quality training I have received from Pathfinder I have been successful in securing a job in York. After finishing the course, I cannot wait to get into the classroom and begin my career as a Teacher of History.

Throughout the course you are guided and supported effectively as the teaching load increases. You will have constant communication with school and university staff who are on hand to offer advice or just a friendly voice. You will be placed in two contrasting schools, this is a brilliant opportunity to grow as a professional, develop strong relationships with pupils and staff and really develop yourself as a teacher. The time in school is coupled with subject specific university sessions which will give you a solid foundation in your subject specialism.
