From the Head Student Team

Pershore Sixth Form is a stimulating and friendly environment in which students have access to a network of teachers, peer mentors and support staff who are committed to assisting you in your academic career and preparations for the future, whether this be university, an apprenticeship or wherever else your qualifications may lead you. We recognise that the transition from Year 11 can be daunting, but at Pershore we strive to welcome you to a platform from which you can achieve your full potential. The Sixth Form Centre is a close-knit community where all students are treated as individuals, and the leadership team have their door open for your every need. The common room provides a space that is relaxed and allows you to have the freedom to work on your terms, whilst also intermingling with the other people across both year groups. We pride ourselves on our sense of community, where we are all equals, and where you will be treated with respect and encouragement to a greater extent than in school. As the Head Team, we look forward to the opportunity to involve you in the various social aspects of the Sixth Form, whether this be the many parties we hold throughout the year, our Winter and Leavers’ Balls or the summer term inflatables day, all of which enable our students to take time away from the pressure of their courses.

Philippa

A-Levels are a big step up from GCSEs, but here at Pershore Sixth Form you are given the flexibility to work your way, whilst having access to exceptional teaching and facilities. The many opportunities offered define your experience more than anything else, making your experience with us truly memorable.

I am currently studying A Level Biology, Sport Studies and Psychology. I chose to study at Pershore as I found the environment really appealing, and I felt very welcomed, being an external candidate. The atmosphere all the way through was very friendly and helpful, which helped me settle in greatly to a completely new set of peers, in a new environment. A real selling point is how accommodating Pershore has been, and as a result, this has given me many brilliant opportunities, which I wouldn’t have received elsewhere. The teaching at Pershore is excellent; the teachers are always willing to help me when I have an issue with my learning. This high quality teaching means I enjoy the considerable challenge that A Levels have to offer.

Sixth form life is very different to lower school life. Teachers teach you with respect and encouragement, helping to get the best out of you as well as having a laugh in the process.

There is also a good range of elective and extracurricular opportunities. This impacted my decision greatly, as it helps to expand my CV with different qualifications and interests, such as obtaining a Sports Leadership Award, Italian lessons, and a variety of MOOCs.

Realising Your Potential A programme that is tailored to the needs of each individual student is provided for all to be able to recognise their potential and develop into healthy, confident young people that leave with the skills necessary to cope with life beyond Sixth Form. Careers and Employability Programme

At the start of Year 12, you will be set challenging, aspirational target grades. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and swift action taken to tackle underperformance. If required, study support sessions will ensure that your full potential is achieved. We work closely with parents/carers, teachers and support staff to ensure that effective action is taken if required.

We hope that your time in the Sixth Form at Pershore High School will be a great journey of both learning and personal development and we recognise that, as part of that, it needs to equip you for your future life. There is an increasingly broad range of options to consider post-18. Whilst Higher Education and full time degree courses are still the most popular destination post A Level, national, global and local employers are recognising that this might not always be the best route into their profession or industry. Apprenticeship options at all levels, including Higher and Degree Apprenticeships schemes are increasing in number.

Independent Study

We recognise that studying at A Level is challenging therefore we provide an excellent balance between the flexibility to work independently and the structure to support success. Each subject has a 10th Period in addition to the normal 9 hours per fortnight of teacher contact. These sessions are used for formal assessment, leaving more contact time with specialists to be used for teaching and learning. In addition, you will have a small portion of your noncontact time formally timetabled in a silent supervised study area to enable you to structure your independent study time effectively.

We offer tailored support whichever route most appeals and in addition 1:1 guidance from our professional Careers Adviser. The Sixth Form programme includes a range of careers management workshops and a mock employer interview. The two day Sixth Form ‘Futures’ event together with regular careers talks throughout the year will provide the opportunity for you to meet a wide range of different employers and representatives from a range of industries and the chance to be inspired and explore career ideas in more depth.

To support all our students with their studies over the two years we work closely with Educate Elevate, a company who provide guidance and workshops to assist students with study skills, revision and preparing for examinations. The Sixth Form Centre (with its own Wifi!) comprises a large common room (with a range of seating, a kitchen and vending machines), ICT Suite (with 40 workstations) and a range of large and small study rooms to allow individual students to choose the optimal place to study and relax.

Future employers both post-18 and post graduate really value experience in the workplace so you will be expected to complete a full week of work experience towards the end of Year 12. In addition, you will be encouraged to undertake at least 60 hours of other extra activity (volunteering, sports activities, participating in school productions etc.) to further develop your skills and experiences.

Elevate

Higher Education

Between 75% and 90% of students leave Year 13 to go onto university, some after an exciting gap year and some to Oxbridge or to read Medicine or Veterinary Science.

The Elevate programme was introduced to support those students considering applications to Oxbridge, Veterinary Science, Medicine, Dentistry and other highly competitive courses at the top universities. These students will be offered ‘mock’ interview sessions with a senior teacher, the opportunity to attend a variety of masterclasses at the universities, tutorials on applying to competitive courses and small tailored sessions to prepare them for the highest academic rigour.

Curriculum & Enrichment Linear A Levels

Most students select 3 subjects in Year 12 with the intention to complete the two-year A Level course in each. Students have the option to take 4 subjects if they wish. The majority of students will not sit AS examinations at the end of Year 12. The rationale for this approach is clear:

You can also benefit from an extensive range of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that you can access freely at any time; examples range from Astrophysics to Zoology. These provide the opportunity for you to extend your passion for a subject though topics you may not get to study within the A Level specification or simply to try something completely different.

Students and teachers are able to focus throughout the two year course on the standard and type of assessment demanded by the A Level examinations.Students and teachers avoid losing a significant amount of teaching time preparing for AS examinations.

Student leadership opportunities are offered both within the Sixth Form and with the younger students. Many students help in lower school classes with literacy, maths or subject specialisms. You will also have the opportunity to earn money as a Break and Lunchtime Supervisor.

The very significant content of the new linear A Level courses is covered earlier, allowing more time for consolidation and revision. An AS is now only worth 40% of the UCAS points for an A Level. Most universities ask for 3 A Level grades – the emphasis is on the quality of these grades. Students commit fully to 3 subjects from the start of Year 12, avoiding a 4th subject that they might be less interested in, or motivated to study.

All students also receive a rich and varied PSHE programme that covers a range of topics from ‘Driving safely’ through to CPR and strategies to support stress and anxiety. In addition to the above there are also a wealth of extra-curricular activities on offer. These include Sixth Form sports, a visit to the German Christmas market, the legendary Inflatables Day, the New York trip, yoga sessions, Winter Ball and many more.

Students have longer to mature academically before taking an external assessment - weak AS grades are not helpful when applying to higher education. The Level 3 qualifications in Business Studies, Digital Media and Food Science and Nutrition will have exams and external assessments in Year 12 which can result in a qualification at that point or the marks can be carried forward into Year 13.

Ambassador Programme

In each subject area there is the opportunity for you to become an ambassador for the subject. This means that you would take a leadership role in promoting that subject area to the lower school students. It is an excellent opportunity to pass on your passion and enthusiasm. You will assist at Open Evening events and will deliver short workshops on their chosen topic area.

Your Individual Programme

Academic achievement is important however, we believe that it is important to the health and well-being our students that they have opportunities to enrich their Sixth Form experience. We offer a broad and extensive Elective programme, which typically includes:

Meg

I am currently studying A Level Biology, Psychology and English Literature & Language. I chose to continue studying at Pershore as they were able to facilitate the subjects I desired to do. It was not a problem to ensure I could do the three courses, even though they are very different. Pershore provides many popular courses, which have been chosen by many of my peers. On top of this, the vast list of electives also provides an extra choice of topics, which are individual to each student. The teachers view each student as an individual, which allows them to tailor our learning. I feel the Sixth Form Team are approachable; they have an open door policy and tutors also offer this support on a daily basis. The responsibilities of being a good role model around school include looking smart each day, arriving ready to work etc. and the freedom going home if you have no lessons or commitments during the afternoon, is a huge part of being a student at the Sixth Form in contrast to the lower school. The smaller class sizes also enable students to feel supported in your subjects and builds confidence to feel able to ask questions if needed. This is a large advantage for students who may feel they lack confidence in a subject. Finally, the extensive PSHE Programme offers advice and support, allowing students to feel prepared for the future.

All Sixth Form students are required to choose an Elective, which will usually occupy about 1 hour a week. Many of these result in a formal qualification or award. A booklet with details of all the options will be available in March.

I am studying Product Design, Geography and a Level 3 Business Studies Cambridge Technical at Pershore Sixth Form. As well as having an excellent standard of teaching, with all teachers being experts in their field, I feel that Pershore Sixth Form provides an environment where we, as students, can mature and excel independently; a vital characteristic I need to progress rapidly in my career. The opportunities at the Sixth Form are endless. I was interested in not just one but three elective subjects (Young Enterprise, Engineering Education Scheme and EPQ) and the Sixth Form team went out of their way to make that possible, as they recognised it would allow my commercial skills to develop. Subject departments also create extra-curricular opportunities; for example, I have benefitted from competing in the CIPFA management game and BASE Accountancy games.

George

I am in year 13, studying Maths, Physics and Geography I feel that coming back to Pershore was an easy decision as it gave me an immediate head start in A-levels as me subject teachers already new my strengths. Similarly, I was also able to settle in much quicker that I felt I would have done at another sixth form. As the Sixth Form is small and personal it provides a friendly environment to excel in all aspects of my studies, supported by my committed and friendly teachers. Pershore is a great environment to expand beyond your A Level studies, adding depth to your personal statement and C.V. I was able to achieve this by participating in a Young Enterprise scheme, successfully running our own company which allowed me to learn a huge amount about the running of a business.

II am currently studying A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. I chose to come back to Pershore Sixth Form because the small year group and class sizes really appealed to me and it definitely creates a nice atmosphere where you feel like you know and can to talk to everyone, including the staff. I also liked that it was a familiar environment where all of the teachers knew me and my strengths/weaknesses.

You will study a work of literature and a work of film plus the following themes: French/German speaking society; Social issues & trends; Artistic culture; Political life Languages are all around us; used in so many situations whether at work, on holiday or casually in day-to-day life – we live in a multicultural, multilingual global society. Studying a language at A level is a smart move if you want a fascinating subject offering a range of career/academic opportunities at the end of it. Not only are those offering language skills an attractive proposition to employers who rely on international business (and there are lots of them) but for those embarking upon Higher Education, languages make an ideal bolt-on subject to most single honours courses. For more details go to: phs.org.uk/MFL

The teaching and support at Pershore has been great, especially with helping me with my application for Medicine. There are also lots of opportunities for electives; for example I am completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the school which has been a great experience so far. I was also lucky enough to go on the New York Trip which was definitely an adventure of a lifetime and was made even better by the other students and the staff leading it.

Philosophy (AQA)

Physical Education (AQA)

Exam (100%) Two three hour exams covering: Epistemology Moral philosophy Metaphysics of God Metaphysics of mind

Exams (70%): Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport NEA (30%): Practical Performance in physical activity and sport: Written coursework Practical based on DVD evidence

As a student of Philosophy you will examine some of our most fundamental ideas about truth, reality, right and wrong and challenge society’s views about them. Philosophy challenges many of our assumptions about what we know and how we should live. It is concerned with how different views of the world clash or fit together, and with how different perspectives – moral, scientific, religious, metaphysical, personal – may be reconciled. You will learn and develop skills in critical and analytical reasoning and how to write clear and coherent arguments. If you enjoy a challenging debate or continually question the world we live in then Philosophy could well be the course for you.

Physical Education is an amalgamation of several different disciplines and focuses primarily on the scientific principles behind exercise performance. It combines branches of science, including physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition, with skill acquisition and psychology to produce students who are capable of following careers in a range of industries, such as teaching, coaching or sports analysis. The main focus of Physical Education is the relationship between exercise and human body. Part of the assessment is based on practical performance; it is therefore vital that pupils must participate regularly in their chosen sport to a high standard

Photography (AQA)

Coursework (60%): Following a broad technical foundation of camera experience in Year 1, you develop a personal project in Year 2.

The course is structured in a way that allows you to progressively take ownership of your projects once you have gathered enough camera know how to craft and construct the photographs you intend to create. You are taught to recognise when you have achieved a good photograph and understand how to recreate that success rather than rely on luck.

Externally Set Assignment (40%): You will have a choice of thematic projects and develop a body of work on this theme culminating with a final piece executed in 15 hours. Students who study History, English, Psychology and Physics may find good cross-curricular links in this subject. You will identify links with the past and use this as inspiration for your own practical photographic work. A GCSE in Art is preferable but not a compulsory requirement. The study of Photography will enable you to shift through the debris of the smartphone selfie phenomenon and get to the heart of what photography is and its ability to communicate to the viewer in its numerous different guises ranging from documentary, reportage, fashion and experimental photography. You will learn how to transform the world through the lens, exploring darkroom and digital techniques. We aim to introduce you to a wide range of photographic styles and analogue and digital techniques that will enable you to make a strong transition to post-18 courses and beyond. Pershore Sixth Form has provided me with numerous opportunities to flourish as a responsible, resilient, resourceful individual. As an external student, what appeals to me the most about Pershore Sixth Form is the pleasant, welcoming atmosphere and the fact that we are one big community, willing to support and encourage one another. A Levels can be extremely tough, yet I strongly feel that Pershore Sixth Form has succeeded in being able to guide each one of us, so that at the end of the two years we achieve our full potential. Furthermore, the quality of teaching and commitment from teachers have given me the confidence to conduct my own independent study with adequate resources. Having completed an EPQ in Year 12, I was able to incorporate elements of personal interest into an academic piece of work and this gave me a chance to work on my organisation and time management skills. I’m sure that Sixth Form will continue to support us through this crucial year of hard work and perseverance.

I am currently studying A Levels in Biology, English Literature and Sport Studies. I thoroughly enjoy all of my subjects and believe that with the support we receive as students from subject teachers, and other members of staff, I will be able to reach my full potential, and achieve my goals. It was an easy decision to come back to Pershore following GCSE, as I believed that it was a large advantage in already knowing subject teachers, as well as them knowing my strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to give me the best support they can. Pershore offers a friendly and welcoming environment for all students; teachers are kind, helpful and always willing to offer support and guidance in any circumstance. Not only has Pershore given me fantastic class room based opportunities, but also fantastic extra curricular opportunities, such as the New York trip and so many more exciting adventures.

I am currently studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and English Language and Literature, which is a really interesting combined course. Pershore Sixth Form has really helped me to bridge the gap between GCSE and A Level study, and mature as a student, through its sense of community due to its small size, and the guidance received from subject teachers and the Sixth Form team. I find the smart dress code puts me in the right frame of mind to work, yet the freedom to decide how to use free periods encourages independence and responsibility for my studies. My subject teachers and the Sixth Form team have been hugely supportive and their strong passion for their subjects has made my courses exciting and stimulated my love to learn. I really enjoy the fact that I know so many people and feel at home; I will be sad to leave Pershore after 5 fast-flying years.

Pershore Sixth Form has always catered for my needs, offering me every opportunity that they’ve been notified to. It’s through this, along with an outstanding Drama department, that I hope to apply for Drama school this year. The Drama teachers have always facilitated my progress, understanding my desire to attend drama school and moulding me so that I fit all the desired criteria to study Acting at degree level. This epitomises the care that teachers at Pershore Sixth Form have for their students. Without the Drama department surpassing all the expectations that an average teacher would be held to, I would not feel as prepared to audition as I do now. This confidence has been enhanced through the Sixth Form team, who strive to enhance your application for university or other pathway to its highest potential. Sixth Form scrutinises every personal statement, offering guidance and help towards every sixth former as an individual, until each person can be assured that they have the best possible application for whatever they aspire to do.

Monty

Lois

Pershore Sixth Form has allowed me personally the chance to challenge myself further in an academic environment, encouraging my independent studying skills that will be invaluable to me later at university. My Philosophy A Level course has only enhanced my already deep interest in the subject and has helped me develop my understanding of the world around me. Classroom Support, as an elective, has been key in gaining work experience within the classroom which will be essential for me when applying to train as a teacher post-graduate. The Head Student team has been amazing in organising social events for the Sixth Form which allow a crucial break form the work, and in keeping the Sixth Form together in keeping morale high.

I am currently studying A Levels in Art, Sports Studies and Psychology. I chose to come to Pershore because I used to go there and I knew I would be happy there, as all my friends were staying and I enjoyed the school when I was there in Year 9. I knew that academically Pershore is a good Sixth Form to go to and has very good facilities. We have the freedom to do different things to the rest of the school and have a large common room to relax with our friends as well as 6th Form only study areas that enable us to work independently.
