Support on every step of your journey Studying in the UK is an exciting prospect, but might also make you a little nervous too. It means leaving your family to start a new life in a new and unfamiliar country, and doing so whilst learning in maybe your second or third language. As experts in teaching international students, we know that the first thing we have to build is a strong and supportive college community. To succeed in your studies you first need to feel welcome, comfortable and safe. Our pastoral support has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Key elements include.
10
INDUCTION
PERSONAL TUITION
We welcome our new students one week before lessons start. You will settle into your new life in the college, meet fellow students and your teachers, make friends and familiarise yourself with the city.
You will meet your personal tutor daily as part of your tutor group, and then regularly throughout the year for more in-depth guidance sessions. They will also update your parents/guardians on your academic progress.
HOUSE SYSTEM
BOARDING SUPPORT
You will join one of 8 Abbey Houses. Taking part in social, sporting and academic challenges and earning ‘house points’. Houses are designed to foster a sense of belonging and competitive spirit. Your housemaster is responsible for your academic and personal well-being.
Our live-in house parents are available to you 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a chat, morning wake up, or advice. They will also organise a weekly meeting called a ‘huddle’ and work closely with your personal tutor and housemaster to provide 360 degree support.
ACADEMIC ENGLISH
HEALTH, SAFETY AND SECURITY
Non-native English speakers receive up to 5 hours of academic English support lessons per week. These take place alongside your academic subjects, they are designed to aid your understanding in lessons and to ensure that you meet the level of English required to enter your chosen university. Lessons are streamed, so you get the exact level you need, and you will move up classes as your English improves.
Our college matron provides first line medical care, and our boarding staff are also first aid trained. During induction we will register you with a local doctor and the National Health Service. The entire college campus is a secure site, with access controlled 24/7 by our on-site security team. We are located at the end of a private road in one of the UK’s safest cities. Secure bicycle storage is provided and each bedroom has a personal safe for storage of valuable items.
Everything we do here is designed to support your personal development and maximise your chances of academic success. Our goal is to achieve the results you need to get to your first choice university, but also to prepare you physically and emotionally for your new life there and beyond.
‘‘This is a caring community of teachers, staff and students. I’ve been able to travel and meet a lot of new, interesting people. My tutors gave me a crucial academic and English base, which has helped me to get on with my studies. Before I could not do tasks because I didn’t know how to express myself correctly, but teachers here taught me really well.’’ Daniyar from Kazakhstan, now studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Surrey.

PRE-DEGREE DIPLOMA
Baseline tests happen during induction to establish your existing subject knowledge. You will then sit regular stage tests for each of your subjects, receiving specific feedback from your tutors. This helps to reinforce your learning and allows us to closely monitor your academic progress, providing feedback and support to help you stay on track.
This happens during your first year. You will be preparing your university application and gaining deeper knowledge and skills in the area you want to study to make you stand out from other university applicants. It also incorporates specialist preparation in areas like Oxbridge and medical admissions, and participation in national and international academic competitions and challenges.
‘‘Taking part in the Pre-Degree Diploma Programme and lower sixth conference gave me lots of good experiences to put in my personal statement.’’ Cynthia from Hong Kong, now studying Mathematics at the University of Bristol.
STUDENT FOCUS: JUAN You were recently awarded the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Roentgenium Award, placing you in the top 50 student Chemists in the UK. How did it feel? ‘After finishing the challenge I knew I hadn't done badly but I thought I hadn't done well enough to be selected for the camp. So when I got the email saying that I got in, I was shocked. It was a very rewarding moment, knowing that the extra reading and the practice that I had done had been completely worth it.’ How do you think the teachers at Abbey College Cambridge have helped you? ‘I had an immense amount of support from all my Chemistry teachers, Allan, Robin and Neil, who always answer the random questions I fire to them or even help me find the answers to the questions they do not have answers to. They have been amazing at giving me books of all sorts and other documents to fulfil my growing desire to learn Chemistry. I should also mention that Allan and Robin ran a Chemistry masterclass in which they dedicated to teach me as well as an eager group of students problem solving strategies in Chemistry.’
What was it like studying at the University of Cambridge? What did you enjoy the most? ‘I somehow felt refreshed. The content was studied in a much greater depth than in A Levels, and it was taught with unbeatable effectiveness. It was the first practical, two hours long, that I enjoyed the most. We were assigned the task of determining the structure of a complex copper ion by means of two different kinds of titrations. Unlike the practicals that we do in A Levels, we could not expect or guess what the outcome of the experiment would be.’ What are your future plans? ‘After going to the camp, I think I should have a go at applying to Oxbridge, and I definitely know now that I want to dedicate myself to study Chemistry at university and hopefully well beyond.’ Juan is in his second year of A Level studies at Abbey College Cambridge, he has applied to study Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

CLUBS
SPORTS
Taking part in weekly college clubs is a great way to meet new friends and expand your horizons. Clubs also allow you to develop and demonstrate a broad range of interests outside of your studies, something that all top universities look for in applicants.
Sports take place every week both on and off campus. Sports and fitness classes available include football, basketball, badminton, swimming, netball, yoga, running, dance and circuits. Competitive sports fixtures against other schools are organised throughout the year.
Our programme formalises your extra-curricular activities and provides a college approved certificate of achievement to support your university application. Clubs are divided into three categories; Action, Belonging and Creativity. You will join at least one of each type of club every term.
All of our Compulsory School Aged (CSA) students take part in weekly physical education classes. Sports are led by a team of professional coaches. Activities are designed to be varied, fun and challenging.
‘‘Outside of class I enjoyed playing for the school basketball and football teams, and taking part in debate club. It was fun.’’ Mohamed from Sudan, now studying Medicine at Aston University.

‘‘Teachers here are enthusiastic, fun and have a real interest in helping students. I plan to study medicine at university, and the teachers helped me lots with my application. Through the pre-degree diploma programme I got lots of feedback, both specific to me and in general, and lots of practice on the type of questions actually given in exams.’’ A Level student Haris from the United Kingdom, now studying Medicine at King’s College London.
‘‘Class sizes are small so teachers can teach to everyone. Taking different subjects has helped me to find what I love to do, teachers give me feedback on my homework straight away, and we have regular exams to help us revise. In the future I hope to enter a top 3 UK university, whilst studying at Abbey College Cambridge I have become more independent and confident.’’ GCSE student Isabella from China, now studying A Levels at Abbey College Cambridge.

‘‘In school I feel like the teachers are my friends, who I can ask and share my problems with. I have become more organised and get along with people better.’’ A Level student Warit from Thailand, now studying Finance at Durham University.

My Physics teachers always come and give me individual support, explaining the concepts until I understand. Studying here has helped me to become more caring, independent and confident.’’ A Level student Kabyar from Myanmar, now studying Medicine at the University of Leeds.
