ACADEMIC SUPPORT Academic achievement and aspiration is at the heart of our vision for all students at The Academy, Selsey. All staff play their part in securing these high standards, but we also have additional strands of support to maintain our academic rigour. Our Heads of Department are responsible for monitoring and supporting student achievement. We support the individual, whether they have aspirations for Oxbridge or wish to embark on a more vocational route through education or employment, our vision supports their aspiration to help them become the best version of themselves. A CARING WHOLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY Our students are at the heart of every decision that is made by our experienced Pastoral team. As a cohesive community, we know how to support and care for our students. We are responsible for all areas of student support relating to social, physical and emotional wellbeing, working with young people and families to ensure that students are able to access learning at all times. Creating a nurturing environment where students are identified as individuals allows us to provide a bespoke support package. As a result, students benefit from the right intervention, whether that be a quiet word about choices, time and space to come to terms with a life changing event or something that requires long term support, utilising our excellent relationship with external agencies. We are focused on maintaining the highest standards of learning, behaviour and uniform. Presenting students with clear guidelines on how to conduct themselves in both school, and the community, supports the role of parents in raising the next generation of highly successful young adults. Our transition team work to support Year 7 when they join The Academy whilst helping Year 11 with the next steps. We have close links with our feeder primaries so are perfectly placed to support your child from day one. We appreciate this move is both an exciting and daunting time for children and parents alike. We begin our transition work in Year 4 and 5 with inspiring sessions highlighting the exciting secondary curriculum. Your child will be invited to experience a number of new challenges designed to develop resilience and prepare them for post-16 challenges. The Inclusive Learning Team works effectively to support our students with identified issues to remove barriers to learning. Learning Assistants are available to support all students and staff in mainstream lessons and small groups within the Learning Support Area. Careful attention is given to the assessment of students’ special educational needs and disabilities.

PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE We believe that work related learning is a vital ingredient in supporting the young people in our community. In addition to preparing our students for their final exams and qualifications, we invest a huge amount of time and energy nurturing the ‘whole’ student; acknowledging the impact of good quality careers guidance on social mobility and life opportunities. We have fostered strong relationships with a range of external partners, from further and higher education as well as numerous local and regional business professionals, who give an insight into the world of work. Every interaction with the world of work develops a student’s appreciation of the wealth of opportunities in the job market. The Academy provides plenty! Highlights include the Annual Careers Fair, Enterprise schemes with Chichester District Council and Albion in the Community, Year 9 and 11 Futures Interviews and the extremely enjoyable Year 8 ‘What’s my job’. Every student has access to a personal online portal providing the latest careers advice and 1 to 1 interviews with a careers advisor.
