Together we Thrive
Welcome to Brickhill Primary School Brickhill Primary School is a caring community school for children between the ages of four and eleven, situated in a residential area to the north of Bedford. We are a diverse and inclusive school which provides an enjoyable and purposeful learning environment for all pupils. As a small school we are in a position to know all of our children well and understand their individual needs. We actively celebrate pupils’ achievements in all areas of our broad and balanced curriculum, and our goal is to combine excellence in teaching with enjoyment of learning. The school has been awarded many accreditations for its participation and high standards in a variety of areas including Healthy Schools, Basic Skills in Numeracy and Literacy, Eco School Silver Award, Gold Sports Mark and we have previously been named as Bedford Sports School of the Year. All of these are fantastic achievements and are the result of the continued effort of both staff and parents. I have been part of the school since September 2012 and I feel tremendously honoured to serve as Headteacher. I am also very proud of the pupils and staff who work extremely hard every day to strengthen and improve on the learning experience for all. We would be very pleased to hear from you and to show you around our school. I trust that your association with us will be a long and happy one. Debbie Wilson Headteacher

Visions and Values At Brickhill Primary we believe children learn best when they are HAPPY and secure. The first aim therefore is to create a happy, secure, stable and caring environment in which children can develop to the full. No two children learn in exactly the same way. We aim to meet the needs of every child and ensure that each individual feels VALUED. We aim to provide varied and challenging learning experiences in order to help pupils develop lively inquiring minds, to be creative, INSPIRED and to expand their intellectual capacities. We aim to develop a child’s independence and personal responsibility and teach them to be RESILIENT in the learning situation, so that with encouragement they become self-disciplined, well motivated and best equipped towards fulfilling their individual potential. Children need skills and knowledge, which are relevant to adult life and will ensure they are EMPOWERED to cope with our changing world. We aim to provide a sound foundation in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and to foster attitudes towards these disciplines so that pupils can use these skills efficiently and effectively. Children need to be able to integrate into and contribute to society. We aim to impart moral values. These values include being TOLERANT of all religions, races and ways of life, as well as fostering international links. We encourage children to relate positively with others and to take responsibility for their own actions. Our THRIVE symbol embraces the concept of us growing, developing, and becoming healthy and strong together. The shoots of the plant encompass our six concepts Tolerant, Happy, Resilient, Inspired, Valued and Empowered. Together the shoots represent a thriving plant. Each shoot is a different size and colour, implying a community. Our school community transforms a set of individuals into a whole.

A Typical School Day ‘’I love my school day at Brickhill Primary- it is brilliant! I start my day at 8.55am and join my friends in the classroom for registration. We have a great numeracy lesson where we are taught in small groups and the teachers make the learning fun. If I find anything hard my teacher is always willing to help me. After numeracy our class joins the whole school in the school hall for Assembly time. My best part of Assembly time is when we have visitors come in to talk to us or when we watch another class perform an assembly. At break time (10.45am) we all get to play on one of the three playgrounds or even on the field or the trim trails. We have lots of outside space. After break we have Literacy. We do lots of reading and fun writing. I love going to our school library to choose a book. Lunchtime is yummy! I can either have a packed lunch or choose a yummy hot dinner from the canteen. Then it’s time to play outside with my friends or join one of the many lunchtime clubs which are run by my teachers. After dinner we work on our Creative Curriculum topic. This term my topic has been Stargazing. This could mean we have geography, science or history around that topic. Sometimes we even get to do Music, French and Drama! At 3.25pm my day at school ends or I could choose to do an after school club. I love my school day at Brickhill Primary.’’ Amelia Year 4

Extra Curricular and Enrichment At Brickhill Primary we offer MANY extra-curricular activities. These are available before school, lunchtimes and after school. For a small fee children can extend their day by attending our Breakfast or Afterschool club. Here children are offered a breakfast or a snack and take part in many exciting activities in a safe and secure environment. Breakfast club runs from 7.45am to the start of the school day. After school club runs from 15.25pm to 17.45pm. There are many other clubs organised which are run by school staff or external providers. These include archery, football, netball, dance, gym, drama, art, science club, knitting club, cooking club and model making. There is so much choice that every child will find something that they are passionate about. Some of the clubs are even suggested and run by the older pupils. Music lessons are held once a week in school time. In addition to this we have a number of peripatetic teachers who come into school to deliver individual or small group music lessons.

Specialist Support We believe that all pupils have individual needs which the school is confident of meeting in all but very exceptional circumstances. Some children experience learning difficulties at school and an early identification of their problems is a key factor in meeting their needs. Initially the class teacher provides work at an appropriate level with the Special Needs Co-ordinator offering advice. The progress of each child is carefully monitored and recorded and help is given where there are seen to be difficulties. At all times parents are kept fully informed of their child’s progress. Sometimes it is necessary to seek specialist help. Similarly children who are particularly gifted are given additional help and challenges within the context of normal class teaching. Resources in the school are appropriate to cater for the brightest and the least able. The whole child is important to us. We support both their academic and emotional needs. We also have a trained pastoral support worker who engages with every child.
