Claire usually draws on experiences that, while universal to all people, feel unique when they happen to us; such an experience feels like a colour only we can see – like déjàvu or heartbreak. Petrol is part of
a series entitled ‘Visceral’, about the memories we associate with particular smells. The artist likes to keep a sense of mystery in her work, as though the viewer is peeking at a secret.
