PreLaunch (Overview) Homer Hickam, author of the memoir Rocket Boys (later released as the movie “October Sky”), once wrote these words about his teacher, Ms. Riley: There is one thing I think we all need to be careful of when we think of Miss Riley. She was a real, living, fleshand-blood human being, not an icon. Sometimes, if I listen, I can still hear her voice, patiently going over each chapter of our physics text, her careful pauses between her words, waiting for our questions, then her concise answers, and always her quick quips to anyone foolish enough to try to make a joke over what she considered serious business. She got tired and I know she got discouraged but she rarely let us see it. She was also a lover of life. It is clear in her history. She read extensively, she played the piano expertly, she loved her family, and she loved her students. She was always just one inch away from a smile and when she did smile, she could light up the darkest room. In very many ways, that smile now lights up this nation, and the world, with the hope that we may once again find our ways back to the old ways, the ways of duty and honor, the ways of our fathers and mothers, and our teachers. (unpublished essay) We, as teachers, walk into our classrooms everyday looking for ways to ensure the education of our children. We combine our education, our creativity, our interests and talents, with the passion we have for providing unique learning environments for our students as they find their way as learners both in and out of the classroom. We often find ourselves asking these questions: •How can I match textbooks with curriculum mandates? •How can I provide unique learning opportunities while meeting standardized test criteria? •How can I involve parents and other members of the learning community in exciting and relevant opportunities for my students? •How can I provide a learning environment that embraces the birth of life-long learners while meeting the academic requirements set for me and my students? •And, finally, how can I guide my students to find their “places in space”? Shuttle to the Station… and Beyond offers an opportunity for the discovery of that “place in space” for both you and your students. Enjoy the opportunity to launch lives!
