from the Editor

While channel surfing at home the other night we stumbled upon “The Social Network” which we missed during its theater run. Or perhaps I should say ‘skipped’ since a movie about Mark Zuckerberg didn’t sound exciting despite rave reviews. But I was wrong; it was a great story. I think I read somewhere that fully half the people online on the PLANET use some sort of social media. Facebook is one of the better known, of course, but personally I’m not buying it. Or I’m not on it…..whatever the terminology is. The Carmel City Magazine, however, does have a page although it’s somewhat low on ‘likes.’ Since I was in charge the first year and kept forgetting, I’ll take the blame for its poor performance. Apparently you have to update more frequently than once a month to attract friends. As a result we hired a professional who manages social media as a career and she’s definitely on it. An idea of hers I particularly like is gathering suggestions for future articles from you, our readers, which is much better than simple inspiration. In this issue you’ll find plenty to read about as Carmel continues to grow and prosper. “Health Care in Carmel” documents the array of hospitals and pavilions available in Hamilton County. These medical institutions earn national accolades while providing superlative services to those who live here and across the state. We explore the art of sushi, which is as beautiful to look at as it is delicious to eat, and also examine the detailed creation of miniatures seen in The Museum of Miniature Houses and NAME. As Memorial Day approaches, we hope you take time to visit the Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial featured in the article “A Place to Honor.” Is there another topic you’d like to see in upcoming issues? Just log on to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ carmelcitymagzine and let us know. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Editor-In-Chief Jackie Holloway jholloway@carmelcitymagazine.com

ranciscan St. Francis Health is extending its nationally recognized health care services to Hamilton County with the opening of a new short-stay hospital and an Immediate Care Center in Carmel. The new hospital, Franciscan St. Francis Health—Carmel, is a short drive from downtown Carmel, Westfield, Fishers and northern Marion County. Located in the North Meridian Medical Pavilion at 12188-B N. Meridian Street, the entrance is off Illinois Street between 116th Street and Carmel Drive. This innovative medical center offers patients a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. Patients have the convenience of quality care close to home and the support of Franciscan St. Francis Health’s highly trained physicians and staff. With onsite imaging, surgery and laboratory services, as well as orthopedics, physical therapy, oncology and primary care, patients have the flexibility of health care that is easily accessible and fits their busy schedules. The hospital’s first and second levels include an adult inpatient unit, inpatient and outpatient surgical suites, a comprehensive imaging center, cardiac testing, physical therapy, oncology infusion therapy and other clinical services.

The third level will house additional clinical and office space for St. Francis Medical Group as well as independent medical practices, including American Health Network’s Carmel practice. “Franciscan St. Francis Health—Carmel represents a new model in the delivery of health care,” said Robert J. Brody, St. Francis president and chief executive officer. “It exemplifies what we believe will be the health center of the future, which is likely to be smaller, less expensive to build and operate, and more flexible in services provided.” As part of the 13-hospital Franciscan Alliance health care system, the Carmel location creates a convenient continuum of care for current and future patients and provides a closer access point to Franciscan Alliance hospitals and facilities in Indianapolis, Mooresville, Beech Grove, Plainfield, Lafayette and Crawfordsville. Also expanding health care options in Hamilton County is a new Franciscan St. Francis Immediate Care Center scheduled to open this summer in Village Park Plaza at 146th Street and U.S. 31. This center, along with four other locations throughout central Indiana, offers efficient and high-quality medical care when immediate attention is needed for accidents and illnesses that do not require an emergency room visit. Each Immediate Care Center is staffed by physicians, and no appointment is necessary.

SERVICES AVAILABLE AT FRANCISCAN ST. FRANCIS HEALTH — CARMEL INCLUDE: • Convenient onsite imaging, laboratory and pharmacy • Physician specialists • Oncology infusion • Inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, including colonoscopy, orthopedic, urological and eye • Adult inpatient unit • Orthopedic consultation

preeminent, patient-centered care

n January 24, 2011, Indiana University Health officially adopted its new name. Formerly known as Clarian Health with hospitals across the state, Carmel’s IU Health North Hospital stands on the corner of 116th and Meridian Street and proudly celebrates its association with Indiana University School of Medicine, one of the nation’s largest medical schools. Its CEO Jon Goble feels that the name change also “more clearly reflects what we do, which is to practice medicine based on academic research and excellence in patient care.” Seated in his office for this interview, Jon manages to seem both relaxed and energized at the same time. He may run one of the most empathetic organizations in the city. “Did you see any parking spaces reserved for administration when you arrived?” he asked. No, actually I didn’t, and while the lot was full, it was relatively easy to find a spot. “That’s because there aren’t any. We want to convey the message that first and foremost we accommodate our patients and visitors, not our staff. “ Jon finds that IU Health has a uniquely humanitarian approach to providing health care. There is no discrimination against inability to pay and

sure that we hire the right people. When we opened in December 2005, there was an initial 30% turnover in staff until we found those who placed patient satisfaction over personal interests. Our culture here does not compromise service in the name of efficiency.” With 24 hour emergency care and doctors who practice the latest in medical techniques, IU Health North offers a complete spectrum of trauma services in a neighborhood setting. Jon is just as proud of the human side of its operations. “I love the bicycle anecdote. A young boy was brought into the ER after a riding accident. He recovered nicely but his bike was irreparable. His English was poor and his family didn’t have the means to replace his bicycle, which happens even in Carmel. One of the staff took up a collection, bought a new bike and took it to his home. It shows we treat not just bodies, but also their souls.” With this kind of attention to patients and families, IU Health North is truly a remarkable asset to the city of Carmel.

in fact millions are given away every year to help those without insurance. Additionally it is the only hospital in Hamilton County to pay property taxes, which are a financial asset to our local economy. The focus at IU Health North, however, is on “preeminent, patientcentered care.” Having garnered three national awards for excellence in patient satisfaction, this full service hospital pays particular attention to caring for women and children in addition to affording the latest techniques in specialized surgeries. Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health is recognized throughout the country for its comprehensive programs that give the “best of care to the smallest patients.” These programs are available in Hamilton County where Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North offers more than 20 pediatric specialties. According to Jon, Riley at IU Health North has 23 private patient rooms in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a first in Indiana, and over 25% of its hospital beds are dedicated to children. One of his favorite stories demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to caring for them. A young boy in the last stages of chemotherapy found that he was hungry mid afternoon after the hospital restaurant had closed. A hot dog sounded really good to him so “the chef went across the street to Meijer, bought the hot dogs, restarted the grill and made sure he got what he wanted.” Maternity at IU Health North sounds almost spa-like. Counting over 2600 deliveries in 2011, they have private rooms that measure 650 square feet with whirlpool tubs, wireless access and bedside computers. Jon emphasizes that their staff exhibits the same excellence as their facility. “We make

first clinic to specialize in sports medicine

f you’re a sports fan you’ve probably seen Methodist Sports Medicine / The Orthopedic Specialists in action. Whether on the field during a Colts game or on the sidelines at a local school, their doctors are a ubiquitous part of Indianapolis athletics. Dr. Peter Sallay, an orthopedic shoulder and knee specialist with MSM / TOS as well as a team physician for Cathedral High School, volunteered to talk about his practice. “I love working in the Carmel facility. It’s convenient for our patients and almost park like with all the trees,” Dr. Sallay comments. Located on Pennsylvania Parkway off Meridian and I-465, Methodist Sports Medicine initially opened in 1980 downtown and across the street from Methodist Hospital. It was the first clinic to specialize in sports medicine where injured athletes could walk-in as well as use a 24 hour hotline to reach doctors at anytime. Over 30 years later, that accessibility still prevails. According to Dr. Sallay, “There have been so many medical advances in the last few years that it’s a brand new world. To keep up, all the physicians at Methodist are ‘100 percent fellowship trained,’ which means they complete four years of medical school, five years of an orthopedic residency and then one year of in-depth training under a top orthopedic specialist. Basically each

surgeon focuses on a specific part of orthopedics such as joint replacement, spine surgery, sports medicine, etc, which translates into a better outcome for patients.” Dr. Sallay has also seen changes in patient demographics. “Our practice used to focus on younger athletes. Now we’re treating a higher percentage of people who are 40+ with overuse injuries. Our clients are more active and savvy than they used to be and as a result they respond to therapy very successfully. We do, of course, have those who experience problems due to weight and inactivity, but there are a growing number of people who are living longer, healthier and more mobile lives.” Treatments have changed radically over time with procedures that are less invasive. “I specialize in shoulder and knee operations,” says Dr. Sallay. “When I first began my practice I performed most surgeries using conventional approaches that required fairly large incisions. Currently most of the surgery I perform is done arthroscopically through small puncture incisions. Innovations in equipment have allowed us to do ligament reconstruction, for instance, with far less trauma to the injured area. As a result, patients recover quickly and with better results than we’ve ever experienced before.” In the future Dr. Sallay expects medicine to continue its amazing progress. “I see bio-engineering allowing damaged parts to be replaced as a result of advances in genetic engineering and stem cell therapy. If you wear out a knee today we use plastic and metal to replace worn parts. Tomorrow we’ll be able to regenerate your own bone and cartilage. I’m sure I’ll look back on current procedures and marvel at how primitive it all seemed.” And what about his patient success stories? “It’s always rewarding to enable an athlete to return to a recreational or professional sport after SPECIALTIES AVAILABLE AT treatment. But when someone visits who can’t METHODIST SPORTS MEDICINE sleep at night because of a shoulder that hurts, it feels just as gratifying to see them resume a nor• Sports Medicine & Performance mal life. Everyday injuries are as important to fix • Physical Therapy as those that we read about in the newspaper.”

s a member of Ascension Health, St. Vincent Health is part of the largest Catholic, mission-driven health care system in the United States. Here in Hamilton County, St. Vincent Carmel Hospital opened in 1985 to serve “all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.” President Michael D. Chittenden championed its expansion in 2003, which led to additional space for 28 hospital beds and a state-of-the-art emergency area, plus the initiation of a new obstetrical service. He sat down recently to discuss what’s in the works now. “We are very fortunate to be part of Ascension Health since we gain access to funds that improve the quality of St. Vincent Carmel Hospital’s facility and staff as well as the ability to address issues such as safety. After all, our primary concern is patient satisfaction.” They were also the first hospital in central Indiana’s ministry to begin a conversion from paper to electronic records in August 2010. The transition, while not without challenges, has made patient records “easier to read and track, and data such as drug dosages and

ally the NICU was an open ward where lots of babies were cared for at the same time. Our new rooms have been designed for individuals and prove less stressful for babies and their families. It’s easier for them to interact and there are far fewer interruptions.” Technologies have become more sophisticated as well so that nurses can monitor an infant’s status when they are not at their bedside. Mike notes that he and other senior executives at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital do more than sit behind their desks. They regularly make a ‘hands-on’ contribution to the popular Meals on Wheels program. “Our kitchen has been preparing food for the last 20 years for this not-for-profit organization. Volunteers are assigned routes to deliver noon meals with both hot and cold dishes to elderly, infirm or sick individuals who have applied for assistance in Hamilton County or Indianapolis. Once a month our executive team takes its turn by signing up for a delivery route. It keeps us connected with the community that we’re dedicated to serving.” Just another example that illustrates the commitment to excellence that St. Vincent Carmel Hospital practices every day.

interactions easier to manage.” St. Vincent in Indianapolis went live with its program just this year. It’s St. Vincent Carmel Hospital’s medical expertise, however, in specialized fields such as bariatric surgery that has enhanced their national reputation. The hospital was the first in Indiana to be recognized by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. In fact, they pioneered the state’s first and largest bariatric program with a full range of support services for overweight patients. According to Mike, “Over 16,000 procedures in the last 13 years have resulted in amazing transformations. Look at www. MyBrandNewLife.org on our website for inspirational stories as well as the range of methods we employ to help people make lifestyle changes. We feel these changes lead to significant improvements in patients’ lives.” Last year St. Vincent Carmel Hospital completed phase one of a three – four stage program with its creation of a “monogram maternity.” The renovation includes private, spacious bathrooms fitted with decorative tile and rain showerheads, labor and delivery suites with fully adjustable birthing beds and an infant alcove attached to each room. Family waiting areas have been enhanced with fireplaces, glass tile mosaic artwork and comfortable furniture. “We typically deliver babies from northern Marion County, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield and Zionsville. Moms, families and friends will love our improvements.” More recently the hospital finished the second phase of this 28,000 square foot project. If babies are born prematurely or with special needs, the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) now provides a private sanctuary for them to rest and grow. “Tradition-

ommunity Health Network is known throughout Central Indiana as a provider of exceptional healthcare services. They have six hospitals with one affiliate and over 100 practice locations so access is convenient no matter where you live. Its mission proclaims Community’s connection to neighborhoods: “Deeply committed to the communities we serve, we enhance health and well-being.” As CEO of ambulatory services, Jon Fohrer agreed to talk about Community Health Pavilion Carmel located on Pennsylvania close to 116th and Meridian Street. My first question had to do with definition; what exactly does ‘ambulatory’ mean? “Ambulatory means outpatient care beyond the confines of a traditional hospital,” Jon explained. “Convenience is a high priority for most people so we’ve placed healthcare centers in areas that patients can easily visit.” Opened in 2002, the health pavilion in Carmel was one of the first to feature a medical mall concept. Jon particularly likes its layout. “Notice that the interior is open, roomy and on one floor. This makes it much friendlier than the somewhat intimidating structure you sometimes encounter in a large building.”

Inside the Carmel pavilion a full range of primary care physicians is available, including family doctors, internists, pediatricians, neurologists and orthopedics. Diagnostics are supported with access to x-rays in addition to Ultrasound and CT scans by appointment. A Rehab & Sports Medicine Center can cure the weekend warrior, while a Sleep/ Wake Disorders Center addresses sleepless nights. MedCheck, which is often used today as a generic term for urgent care, in fact was created by Community Health Network. You’ll find a MedCheck in the pavilion as well that offers walk-in care. Another amenity opened to the public is the ‘Community Room’ which can be used for classes, meetings, seminars or church gatherings. Jon notes that about 190 companies, including Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation and Tom Wood Automotive Group, send their employees to the Community Health Pavilion in Carmel for Occupational Health related services. There were over 13,000 visits last year to MedCheck alone. “Approximately 70% - 80% of a person’s health care needs can be met through the center. With our focus on access and convenience, patients and their families can get in, get out and get on with their busy schedules.” Physicians also like the pavilion concept. “It provides a low-cost method that enables

doctors to be close to their patients with supplies and equipment already in place. In some cases they time-share with others in the same field which allows them to practice in several different locations. A medical mall functions almost like a specialized condo for professionals. Both patients and physicians benefit from this flexibility.” Looking ahead Jon believes that neighborhood health centers will become even more sophisticated. “I think that services such as advanced imaging, sleep labs and sports medicine will continue to expand and attract customers who place a high priority on quality of life. Community Health Pavilion Carmel is a concept that fits today’s health priorities.”

For those who prefer their dishes well done, feast your eyes on the delectable art of sushi! In its simplest form sushi refers to any combination made with vinegar flavored rice and sashimi, which is very fresh raw fish or meat sliced into thin pieces. However you describe it, this Japanese delicacy tastes as good as it looks.

Consequently, Buddy is deathly afraid and hasn’t bathed in 12 years but is miraculously bestowed with the gift of divining water. His burgeoning relationship with the preacher focuses on water’s symbolic power – how it heals, cleanses, blesses, gives life, and ultimately takes it away. Directed by Danny Russel. JUNE 29TH - 30TH The Hunchback of Notre Dame/Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre. A timeless tale of love and jealousy, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame celebrates Victor Hugo’s dark tale with contemporary flair. Traditional choral song sits amid contemporary French and English music for a rich blended score that punctuates the mixing of contemporary costuming with timeless peasant wraps. An ever-changing cast reminiscent of the ancient Greek chorus sets the scene with which Hugo’s key characters are manipulated. Dancers transform from Parisians to peasants, to nuns and vicars of Notre Dame. Wedding Primer Congratulations….you are engaged! WHAT IS YOUR NEXT MOVE? As an experienced wedding planner, I can assure you there are many ways to plan your wedding, but the important thing is to keep it easy and stress free. Hiring a wedding coordinator to help you through the entire process or just the day of the wedding can be the best investment you make. If this is not in the budget, consider a consultation with an expert. If this is still not an option, then take the planning process step-by-step. A wedding can be coordinated in any time frame if you check off details one at a time. First to consider is an initial list of guests. Why begin with a guest list? That’s because you need to book a venue knowing approximately how many will attend your wedding. I usually tell my clients to make three lists; the parents of the bride, the parents of the groom and the couple themselves should all write down the people they want to invite. Usually about 60 – 70 percent will actually attend. Now you can shop venues for your ceremony and reception. After you’ve discussed dates, tastes, budgets and who is responsible for what, contact potential candidates

to see if they meet your criteria. Follow with appointments to visit two or three, make your selection and voila! You should feel a great sense of accomplishment with a wedding date, preliminary guest list, ceremony and reception site all set. With a million more things to do, there’s no need to panic. Here is a suggested list I give my clients to help them complete the rest of the planning process. Most couples take one year but the list can be adapted to fit any schedule.

11 months to go

Along with your coordinator, arrange to secure a photographer and videographer for your wedding and reception. These are at the top of the list because they preserve memories and are most involved in running your day. Musicians are the master of ceremonies and should also be booked.

10 months to go

Secure a ceremony officiate and hotel accommodations for out of town guests to avoid conflicts with other events on the same weekend as your wedding.

9 months to go

Verify that your reception site provides catering; if not, you will need to book a caterer. Also, take engagement photos. How fun!

8 months to go

Assemble a gift registry and design and order save-the-date cards. These need to be sent out at least six months in advance.

7 months to go

Finalize your guest list and your bridal party. Get honeymoon plans in the works!

6 months to go

Most bridal gowns need to be ordered by now as well as bridesmaids’ dresses. Then you can focus on the rehearsal dinner and completing your tasting at the reception venue.

5 months to go

Now it gets fun and creative! Book your florist and any other décor items such as chair covers. Also, find a hair and/or makeup artist, arrange for transportation the day of the wedding and pick out groom and groomsmen attire.

4 months to go

Order your invitations and wedding cake; cupcakes are also a crowd favorite. Do a quick review of timing for the wedding.

3 months to go

Make sure rings are picked out and ordered, and assemble small welcome bags for your out-of-town guests.

2 months to go

Details count the last two months. All invitations should be mailed, insurance secured for venues, party gifts/favors assembled and a final meeting with your ceremony officiate held. This is a perfect time to consider hiring a day-of coordinator.

1 month to go

Confirm ceremony/reception music and print programs, seating cards and all other stationery. Send the groom for one last tuxedo check and the bride for a final fitting. A preliminary guest count should be done with RSVPs and nonresponsive guests called. Confirm counts with florist and décor companies and meet with the photographer as well as hair and make-up artists. Honeymoon payments and arrangements should be verified.

Week of the wedding

Give all personal décor items and welcome gifts to your coordinator and have a final meeting at ceremony and reception venues to confirm numbers and seating arrangements. Wrap up any loose ends. So much to remember but you can do it! If, however, you’re beginning to think this is too complicated, sit back, relax and hire a professional. You could save time, money and enjoy a carefree celebration.

Carmel City Map

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

70

CARMEL FACTS & FIGURES • Estimated population of about 85,000 • City named one of “best places to live in America” by Money Magazine • 6th highest per capita income in US • 58.5% of residents hold bachelor’s degree or higher • Lowest overall tax rate in the state for city this size or larger • Carmel High School has 94.7% graduation rate • 93% of Carmel High School students attend college • Carmel Clay Public Library is ranked 6th nationwide

CARMEL GALLERIES

a guide to the carmel art scene

It is exciting to see the growth of Carmel’s Arts & Design District and the number of galleries, boutiques and restaurants that are drawn to the area. The new Indiana Design Center adds another valuable destination for designers. Creating the Arts & Design district has allowed us to take a very underdeveloped section of Old Town Carmel and transform it into a thriving area attracting economic development focused on the arts. James Brainard Mayor of Carmel

The Carmel Arts & Design District Galleries exhibit creative and diverse art, making the District a vibrant arts destination. “…a miniature is an adult hobby that reflects painstaking attention to detail and accuracy to scale.”

TINY TREASURES

Though I’ve lived in Carmel for many years, I had no idea that something so big was going on downtown, and I don’t mean the obvious changes we encounter every day. What I recently discovered are the Museum of Miniature Houses and NAME, both of which are located in the Carmel Arts & Design District and enjoy national recognition. Stephanie Marshall, special events coordinator for the District, moved here in part because of them. She has been collecting and building miniatures since she was a child in London and relished the opportunity to live next door to ‘minis’ of this caliber. It is her enthusiasm which initiated this story. To learn more about them, I first had a conversation with Suzie Moffett, one of three Indiana artisans who founded the Museum in 1991 with the “goals of preserving and displaying scale miniatures and antique dollhouses and introducing this art form to others.” “Things are changing,” Suzie said. “It used to be stay at home moms who were miniaturists. Now a lot of men, retired from shops where they had room to make things big, have graduated to crafting items that are small.” And what is the definition of small anyway? According to Suzie, it all has to do with scale. “A dollhouse, for instance, is a toy meant for play, whereas a miniature is an adult hobby that reflects painstaking attention to detail and accuracy to scale.” There is the one inch to one foot model to create a three foot cube, a one half inch to one foot model for an 18” cube and then the one fourth inch to one foot scale “for crazy people.” The Museum of Miniature Houses displays all three sizes, so that these ‘small’ differences can be appreciated. Another reason that miniatures attract so many followers is that it requires expertise in multiple art forms. Look into any display and you’ll see tiny throws

and pillows made from needlepoint, blown glass, porcelain dishes, pottery, and furniture crafted with all the precision found in real life. There are even those who specialize in miniature upholstery, a craft that Suzie defines as “insane.” “This hobby is still cheaper than psychiatry,” she states. “It’s the best way to rest your brain while creating something for the ages.” Over seventy thousand visitors have toured the museum to date. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in Hamilton County on Main Street, it shares its attractions with another miniature society around the corner. NAME stands for National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts and coincidentally relocated here from Carmel, California to one of the original farmhouses on Range Line Road in 1991. Formed in 1972 and dedicated to the miniature builder and collector, NAME will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Office Manager Kim Ash is enthusiastic about members who will come from all over the country to a spectacular National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina this July. “It’s through national and regional meetings like this that like-minded miniaturists exchange their ideas, view spectacular exhibits and learn new techniques from world-renowned artisans.” NAME also has a museum on the first floor that showcases collections and in fact they share many of their displays with the Museum. “Only through sharing can we really enjoy our treasures,” is the motto that unites so many miniature craftsmen across the world. Both the Museum of Miniature Houses and NAME hope that more of us here will come to appreciate the captivating art of miniature making.

WELLNESS by design

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

Carmel is a great place to live for many reasons and access to quality health care is definitely one of them. There are plenty of options to find care that is right for you. The one thing all these options do not provide is relief from sky rocketing costs in health care over the last twenty years. The rising cost of the health care industry is not unique to Carmel. It’s a national trend that’s not going away. The best way for individuals and employers to fight these costs is to get healthier. Wellness has been a buzz word in the industry the last couple of years. The fact is that it’s inexpensive and it works. According to the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA), the majority of health care costs are spent treating preventable chronic conditions. Depending on the health of your employees, this can add up to huge costs. Targeting and helping prevent chronic conditions can significantly reduce your health care costs. As with any major business initiative, the driving factor in developing and maintaining a wellness program is getting a strong return on investment. If

117

your program is successful, your employees will become healthier and you will have fewer medical claims and expenses. In addition, if you are self-insured, dollars saved from your wellness program go straight to your bottom line. If selfinsurance is not an option for your organization, you can inform your insurance company of your wellness efforts in an attempt to get a lower premium. A recent report in Health Affairs, a health care policy journal, suggests that workplace wellness programs can yield a substantial return on investment, both in terms of employee health and the employer budget. The report, which examined and compared dozens of previously published studies, found that for every dollar spent on wellness, medical costs dropped an average of $3.27 and absenteeism costs fell $2.73. Starting a wellness program doesn’t take a huge investment and will show a return if you stick with it. Here are some of the most effective ideas we have found:

118

Identify the biggest problem areas among your employees. Do you have a lot of smokers? Is a large percentage struggling with obesity? Perhaps there is a high rate of diabetes or high blood pressure? Choose the areas with the highest prevalence rates to create your initial programs. Once your program has been launched, keep in mind that more programs can be added later. Ask employees what would benefit them the most. Would they be likely to use on-site fitness facilities? Would they prefer discount programs for local gyms? Do they want more education on healthy eating and exercising? Tailor your program to fit your employees’ needs, and they’ll be more likely to participate and see results. Implement changes in your workplace to promote healthy living, such as a ”Take the Stairs” program, offering healthy vending machine choices, deterring employees from drinking soft drinks and starting a walking group during lunch. During the next open enrollment, raise your employee benefits cost by $100 to $200 per employee for your wellness budget. As an incentive for participation, allow employees to earn back their $100 to $200 (in cash, premium decreases, gifts, etc.). In order to have an effective wellness program, you need to make an effort to sustain and support it. You should have a team responsible for managing the program, and you must budget to keep supporting it financially. Return on investment generally does not occur until two to three years into the program, so it is important to remember that and remind upper management in order to maintain executive buy-in. Periodically evaluate your current program. Survey employees to see if they’re satisfied, or what changes they might like to see. Look for ways to increase participation or further the initiatives you’ve put in place.

A Place To Honor

“…pause and remember those who served our nation.”

In the heart of Carmel City Center at 3rd Avenue SW and City Center Drive, a larger than life statue soars amidst a semi-circle of flags. It depicts two kneel-

ing soldiers, a man and a woman, who in the words of sculptor Bill Wolfe appear to be “on a battlefield and have just picked up the American flag and are moving forward. The wind actually becomes one of the forces they have to battle.” While the nine foot bronze has become a recognizable part of the city’s landscape, it wasn’t so long ago that it was just a possibility. In 1999 Mayor Brainard first presented the idea of a Veterans Memorial to the local commanders of the American Legion post, VFW post and the president of the Military Officers Association (MOAA). After securing a not-for-profit status in 2002, the Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial Corporation was formed with LCol Bill Ensign, USAF (RET) elected as president. The initial order of business was site selection. Originally it may have been near the present day gazebo, but according to Ensign, “the current location in front of the reflecting pool was ideal since it could not sustain a building of any kind and it was FREE.” Architects and sculptors were then invited to submit their designs, with Terre Haute artist Bill Wolfe eventually chosen. All funds were raised via donations from businesses, individuals and the sale of more than 700 brick pavers. One plaque at the entrance of the plaza commemorates major donors, while a second plaque recognizes the volunteers who made it happen. On October 12, 2006 the unveiling and dedication took place. As stated by Mayor Brainard, “This memorial statue commemorates the huge sacrifice our armed services personnel have made to protect this great country. It will forever be a landmark in Carmel, inviting all who pass to pause and remember those who served our nation.” Since that time Carmel has celebrated Memorial Day as well as Veterans Day at or near the monument. Traditions have become established, such as carnations which are delivered by Carmel’s 7th graders to the base of the statue every Memorial Day. Visitors have especially increased since the relocation of the Farmers Market east of the park in 2011, encouraging many more to explore the Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial plaza. There you’ll find eight flags flying at the site, one for each of the uniformed military services, the POW/MIA flag, the U.S. flag and the Indiana flag. Six plaques surround the pedestal with inspirational quotes from Presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, Eisenhower and Reagan, philosopher Edmund Burke and aviator Amelia Earhart. With the reflecting pool beyond, the Memorial provides a serene oasis to honor all those who fought for our freedom.
