Letter from the Editor

One of the assignments this issue was a profile on secondary school choices in Carmel. Initially the prospect seemed daunting, until we figured out that students could tell the story best. Seven high schools were included with a student chosen from each to write an essay. When compositions started rolling in, on time and beautifully penned, the results were worthy of an A++. All of the authors had something inspirational to say and every contribution was unique. Kids, as proficient as they proved to be, completely blow away concerns about the next generation. Bring on the challenges of the 21st century! The oncoming wave of graduates will knock them out of the campus. The interview with two local artists who published Bob’s Booger, a picture book for children, makes good reading as well. Scott Black and Margaret TerBush took five years from schedules packed with kids and careers to create their charming tale, which actually made it onto the 2012 LA TIMES summer reading list. Their foray onto the national publishing scene proves that small companies can indeed make it big.

Also included is a feature on craft beers, a slightly awkward transition but there you go. I totally misjudged the outcome of this piece. Boring photos? No way; beer positively glows in these pictures. Standard fare with bottled and on tap beers? Wrong again. I had no idea that there were so many varieties plus a slew of local brewing companies. Thank goodness for Chelsea; she’s the photographer who shot the session and she knows her way around a pub. Shown here is a picture of me with the bartender at Divvy. *Sigh* someone has to suffer... Carmel City Magazine is off to a great start in 2013 so stick around for the issues ahead. There’s a lot more to discover about the community in which we live. More Than Just Numbers by Meredith Baranowski ‘13

At Carmel High School, we value our statistics. We’ve proudly won 122 state championships, making an appearance in all 20 IHSAA sports, placing first in the Rose-Hulman math competition the past four years, and winning four state band competitions and two Bands of America competitions. Carmel Dance Marathon is the largest high school marathon in the country, raising $261,229.48 for Riley Hospital for Children just last year. With 4,698 students the successes are amazing, but figures alone can’t show the pride we feel to be a part of CHS. Unified by school spirit and energized by our accomplishments, our student body is strong in more than just numbers. The statistics show something else, as well: Carmel High School is among the best when it comes to preparing their students. Our 95% graduation rate,

despite our unusually large enrollment, speaks for itself. Students go on to the nation’s top universities, with at least 12 from last year’s class gaining acceptance into Ivy League colleges. CHS challenges all its students by offering 28 AP, seven Advanced College Project and 18 IB classes, with numbers continually increasing. The schedule selection is incomparable and offers hundreds of choices, from Animation, to Fashion Merchandising, to Architectural Drafting and Electronic Music. There are also over 140 plus clubs to choose from and I soon found my niche in student government, DECA, freshman mentoring and yearbook. With this kind of preparation, CHS has provided me with the tools and the confidence to pursue whatever university or career I choose. Quite possibly, Carmel’s most memorable statistic of all is its size. With 4,698 students and 300 faculty members, we fill the house. Oh, and about that house? Carmel High School sits on 55 acres of land, with 22 of them under roof. I must admit I’m frequently amazed by our towering ceilings, state-of-the-art facilities and the ability to always meet someone new. By exposing students to so much diversity, CHS has prepared us to enter the world outside its walls. In effect, we have the benefits of a university in size, and the hominess of a high school with its integrated scholastic, social and athletic schedule. While I may be biased, I believe that every student can make the absolute most of their four years here. And that statistic, I believe, is our finest one yet.

I chose to attend Brebeuf because I felt that the education I was receiving from my previous high school wasn’t meeting my expectations. I wanted a school that would give me the greatest opportunity to succeed, and position me to reach the highest level of achievement possible. My family was surprised by my decision, but open and enthusiastic throughout the application process. I had family members who had attended Jesuit schools in the past, and my parents understood the value of a Jesuit education. Brebeuf has given me multiple opportunities to expand my faith. While being a Catholic school, Brebeuf is incredibly accepting of other faith traditions and makes an effort to include and embrace the spirituality of other religions.

As a Muslim, I have been blessed to attend a school that allows me to explore my faith through retreats, masses, and even short daily prayers every morning. Brebeuf is unique in that it stresses the common qualities of all religions—peace, love for thy neighbor, equality in the eyes of God—rather than the contrasts. Brebeuf’s inclusive philosophy to other traditions has allowed me to become a much more spiritual person, knowledgeable about not only my faith, but the faiths of others around me. Have you ever experienced an “aha” moment? Well, I did during my shadow day at Cathedral. Walking on the beautiful wooded campus, looking at the wall of State Championship banners and pictures of All Americans, visiting with students on why they chose Cathedral, and meeting teachers and coaches was simply inspiring and I wanted to be a part of it. I also recognized that the student body was full of kids from all over the city and from various socio-economic and academic backgrounds. lis, and even Bloomington. It just feels right to be in a school that demonstrates diversity and welcomes everyone no matter where you come from. Since day one, teachers, coaches, and administrators opened their arms to me and included me in the Cathedral family. I have never had a teacher, coach, or administrator that did not want me to succeed. When I had some volleyball injuries, it was quite humbling to me that various staff members (who I didn’t even have for class) knew my name, checked on how I was doing, and even prayed for me. Probably the number one reason why I love Cathedral is our tradition of excellence, which is grounded in the Catholic Faith. It is very comforting to go to a school that is faith filled. Mass and intentions are offered every day and it is great to see our chaplains Father Munshower and Father John in school and at athletic events. Cathedral students achieve every day in many areas: academically, athletically, theatrically, musically, and spiritually. Being at a school with a Catholic foundation with traditions of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts—and with teachers, coaches, and administrators helping you achieve your own excellence-makes me want to strive for it even more! Cathedral truly fits me perfectly and I couldn’t ask for more in a high school.

Asking why I love my school is like asking why I love my family. How couldn’t I? At Guerin Catholic, your school and your family are one and the same. for all fifty-some kids behind him, a school where classmates are family. I know I’ll miss it next year, but at the same time I feel adequately prepared to move on to the next level, and not just in academics. When people hear about a “college prep” school, their first thought is that the school has the exceptional academics necessary for a student to excel at the next level. I have indeed experienced this at Guerin Catholic, particularly through the remarkable teachers and staff members and the rigor of the International Baccalaureate Program. As a college preparatory school, however, Guerin Catholic does so much more than that. My four years at Guerin Catholic have taught me what it means to be a leader, a teammate, a friend, a student and a Christian. There are so many different opportunities that I may not have been provided with at another school, such as multiple sports teams, daily mass, service projects and a variety of clubs. By the time I was ready to enter high school, I had moved several times and attended multiple schools including home, public, and private. Being in many different environments helped me make the difficult decision when choosing a high school. Now, almost finished with my junior year, I am so thankful that I decided to attend Heritage Christian School. Heritage is known for its welcoming, tight-knit community. Not only are there smaller class sizes, but studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives intersect beyond class. This creates a greater depth in relationships as well as a sense of belonging. Intentional mentoring opportunities between upperclassman and underclassman help unify the student body. Teachers know me personally and many student-teacher relationships continue after graduation. Even my principal knows me well enough to be able to write a letter of recommendation for me for an internship opportunity in Florida. The faculty cares more about helping grow students individually than growing their own program.

Heritage Christian School

Heritage pursues excellence in every area. Academically, Heritage challenges students with rigorous Honors and AP classes, consistently ranking my school in the top five SAT/ACT scores for the metro-Indianapolis area. The school incorporates the latest technology, and next year, I will be required to have an iPad as Heritage implements the new 1to1 system. Excellence also permeates extracurricular activities. Mock trial was a great experience, and every year multiple teams are sent to state competition. The fine arts department continues to grow, and groups such as the Colla Voce choir compete at the state level against large 5A schools. State championships and college scholarships for academics, music, and athletics are not uncommon. Coaches, directors, and teachers want to see their students achieve, but they also encourage personal and spiritual growth. Because of the thriving spiritual environment of Heritage, my faith in Jesus Christ has been encouraged, stretched and nurtured. Not only do we have daily indepth Bible teaching and weekly chapels, but the Christian environment permeates every class as each teacher lives an exemplary life and truly cares about the individual student. I am thankful for several teachers who have talked with me outside of class, leading and encouraging me to continually seek Christ in everything. In relationships like these, I realize how blessed I am to be able to attend Heritage Christian School. And, I am all the more excited to see what the rest of the semester and my senior year will bring.

I’ve attended Park Tudor since seventh grade. Now as a senior, I have time to reflect on all that Park Tudor has given to me. When I think of Park Tudor, I think of the abundance of knowledge I’ve gained. I’ve had the opportunity to learn three languages and I’ve taken multiple Advanced Placement courses in pretty much every subject from English and History to Computer Science. But I think more important than a list of courses is who teaches them. The teachers at Park Tudor are so passionate about their subjects and this passion allows them to actively engage students in the material they teach. I’ve learned about Roman history through deciphering Latin, the outlooks of Aristotle and Plato by comparing my own view of the

world, and synthesis of various chemicals by mixing concoctions of my own. Teachers at Park Tudor have not only given me a breadth of knowledge, but depth as well. In addition to the academics, there are also many extracurricular activities available at Park Tudor. I play the flute in Park Tudor’s concert band, pep band, and jazz band. I founded the UNICEF club as a freshman, partake in community service through multiple clubs, and have played both lacrosse and tennis. This is only a small portion of the vast extracurricular opportunities at Park Tudor. What’s great about these activities is that it’s so easy to join them because students who lead them are approachable and inclusive. Of course Park Tudor is superb academically and in its extracurricular offerings, but I think Park Tudor’s best asset is the people who make up its community. I’ve grown up at University High School. I haven’t grown in the literal sense, but I have come to know more about myself and my passion in life. January Term helped me find my niche. During J-Term, as we call it, we take a three-week course on a subject that interests us. As a freshman, I chose a journalism class all about The New Yorker. We studied the publication, created our own magazines and traveled to New York. We visited the magazine’s headquarters and met with writers, getting a glimpse into the world of an artist. It dawned on me. University is a school full of talent and stories to be told, and we needed a voice. I shared my vision for an online publication, and

From cartoonists doodling in the art room to basketball players dribbling on the court, The U Post strives to tell every story. These stories are especially valuable at University, a school that celebrates the way each individual identity impacts a community. Teachers encourage students to flourish and contribute. Dedication means more than getting A’s. Students work hard every day because we know we are carving out our place in the world. My place is giving people a voice, and University has helped me do just that. I take pride in knowing I made something of my vision for The U Post. At University, I have countless opportunities to better myself. This community is one that truly values and celebrates one another’s differences. We bring entirely different backgrounds to the classroom, and this diversity leads to richer growth and learning. Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial

The plaza was established by the Carmel Clay Memorial Corporation to create a place to honor veterans. It proudly displays a beautiful bronze military sculpture by Indiana artist William H. Wolfe. Funds for the sculpture were raised through private donations from local businesses and individuals who purchased engraved bricks to honor loved ones. Be sure to take the time to visit and remember the many veterans who fought for our freedom. To the west of the Memorial, you can take a stroll around the city’s reflecting pool. May 2nd CCHS Spring Tea: Aprons Have a Historic Past/ Carmel Clay Historical Society. Grab your grandmother’s old kitchen apron and bring it along to the CCHS Spring Tea. Esther Duncan of Veedersburg will present “Aprons Have a Historic Past” at this year’s spring fundraiser. Duncan will share a unique look at the history of women’s role in society though history, using aprons to tell that story. She traces their use and meaning from the earliest recorded use through the 1960s, when their use dropped significantly with the advent of the Woman’s Movement. Samples on display include aprons from as far back as the 1830s – the very decade the town of Bethlehem (now Carmel) was founded. The CCHS will have on display some of its very own historic aprons. Those who attend the tea are invited to bring aprons of their own. Duncan will fabric date the aprons and share some history about them with

In May 2012 Margaret TerBush received a phone call from the LOS ANGELES TIMES. The conversation, she said, was mercifully short, so the self-described ‘screamer’ didn’t have time to emote. “We’d like to include Bob’s Booger in our recommended summer reading, which is also known as ‘The Big List.’ Look for it in a few weeks. Thank you, good-bye.” HEL-LO! Did she say the LA TIMES??? And thus a success story for two local artists was launched.

Bob’s Booger (you gotta love the title) is the name of a children’s book written by Scott Black and illustrated by Margaret for the four to ten year old age group. It tells the story of Bob, who is having one of those days when

“he’s not feeling well, but his mom makes him go to school anyway. Even worse, Bob must deliver homework to his best friend, Joe, who gets to stay home.” And, oh, “everyone seems to be staring at him…for some reason.” Composed in rhyme with eye-popping graphics, Bob’s Booger is sensational to look at and fun for both kids and adults to read. Just released in August 2012, you can find it at Barnes and Nobles and Kits & Kaboodle, as well as on iTunes and soon The Nook and Kindle. How did Scott and Margaret pull off such an artistic and marketing coup? It turns out that talent plus persistence pays off no matter what obstacles exist in the publishing world. The odyssey began over five years ago at Scott’s home in Fishers. “I’d always liked reading to my twins and wanted to write something the whole family would enjoy. Though my educational background at IU was in speech and theater, I’ve been inspired by a range of media, one example being ‘A Boy Named Sue’ by Johnny Cash.” Currently Scott teaches speech and debate to grades 9 – 12 at Warren Central

High School, so he is totally with it when it comes to relating to kids. “Gross is in with children, which makes it a great way to sneak in lessons about friendship and honesty. I started penning Bob’s Booger in my spare time in ‘07, usually on a Sunday afternoon or late at night when everyone was asleep.” Margaret received the manuscript from Scott two years later. They’d been longtime friends, and as a stay-at-home mom in Carmel, Margaret was ready to take on the challenge of illustrating Bob’s Booger. “First I created sketches to fit the composition. Then I did cartoons for each page, which were more refined drawings. Finally I had to select the medium, which proved to be the most difficult decision. It was Scott who suggested ‘cut paper collages.’ My first attempt was the composition on page 7. Page 12 turned out to be the most complex and took 12 hours to complete (both shown above).

After three years all the illustrations were finished and ready to be photographed.” When Brinkman Press on 54th and Keystone began producing the book in November, 2011, Scott and Margaret founded Broccoli Press. The name ‘broccoli’ was formed by taking its consonants from the names of their five children. With hard copies finally in hand, they initiated the arduous process of marketing Bob’s Booger. According to Scott, “The picture book niche is highly competitive in the publishing world. Critics like to review submissions three to four months ahead of their release date, so we immediately began mailing copies across the country to institutions like the Children’s Corner with the CHICAGO TRIBUNE and all major publications as well as newspapers. Then it was sit back and wait.”

Nobody puts stars on the calendar when it’s time to visit the dentist. At least that’s the way it used to be before dentistry evolved into the kinder, gentler science practiced today. Wayne Kinney, DDS, embodies this 21st century approach, which is guaranteed to win a smile from even the most reluctant patient. He recently took time to explain how the business of caring for your teeth has changed so remarkably. “Dentists initially personified the wild west of medicine, with barbers on Main Street dispensing liberal doses of whiskey and wielding tools of torture. Now we’re in the main stream since the health of your mouth has been definitively linked to overall well-being. Today, we know that when your body fights chronic infection that is common in the mouth, it leads to inflammation. This sets off chemicals that have been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even low birth weight babies.

We’re the only area of medicine that sees its patients every six months so we can head off a multitude of problems before they become serious. Even chronic headaches and migraines probably have a dental component. It’s a holistic way of looking at the body.” Dr. Kinney knew early on what he wanted to do. “I was the geeky kid in high school with the chemistry set ,but also an interest in art. Since I was pretty good with my hands, dentistry felt like a calling.” Following his graduation from the IU School of Dentistry in 1982, he spent three years with the Air Force and was one of four chosen to receive specialized training in periodontics. “While I appreciated the recognition, I’ve never regretted choosing family practice. There’s so much variety in who I see and what I do that every day is different and interesting. And there’s no longer a reason for people to avoid dental treatment. For patients that are particularly fearful, we offer IV sedation or sometimes oral medications, and of course nitrous oxide (laughing gas). TVs are in every examination room to occupy your attention. The patient can zone out while we zone in.” Just as important as regular dental visits are the day-today hygiene routines established at home. Well, okay, there’s flossing and brushing but Dr. Kinney notes that it’s a matter of compliance. “We recommend a common sense regime of brushing twice and flossing at least once daily. Soft bristles are very important. Two relatively recent products are especially effective. The new electric toothbrushes that simultaneously rotate and pulsate can clean teeth unbelievably well, while anti-cavity mouthwashes are a boon for those who are cavity prone. These have the potential to greatly improve health and reduce dental problems. You see, there are basically two reasons that teeth break down; bacteria and forces against the teeth that are too high. About eight to ten minutes a day is the total amount of time your teeth should be in contact. So, when bacteria and force are controlled, you can expect good oral health. When they are not, problems will ensue.” Really? Time to ditch the chewing gum.

What about the medical advances he’s seen over the last 30 years? “I started placing dental implants back in 1987 and they are now a common part of my practice. Today, we’re able to build up lost bone so that almost anybody can get them. They have virtually antiquated bridges and partials. Also, X-rays are digital now as opposed to film and deliver one-fourth the amount of radiation. CAD-CAM technology is used in the dental office to enable conveniences such as one-visit crowns with customized fitting. No more temporary crowns! Furthermore, we now understand how headaches and migraines can be significantly affected by accurately adjusting bites using computers, cold laser and ultrasound. Today, there’s no reason for anyone to live in pain or lack confidence due to an improper bite or dental disease or missing teeth. Modern dentistry and medicine have integrated to allow everyone a better quality of life.”

When development began

on the Village of WestClay, it was as if a town bloomed overnight in the fields of Carmel. First there was a boulevard and then a row of fine homes for a grand opening show. It was a huge hit and has enjoyed continued success ever since. We took a tour and talked to two real estate professionals to find out more about its history. What was the concept behind the Village of WestClay? Donna: This was the first time Brenwick developed a neighborhood of this type and The Village was the first of its kind in Indiana. The prototype is a concept called a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Traditional Neighborhood Developmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (TND), which is part of the New Urbanism.

Joe: My wife Joey and I decided to come back to Indiana after being gone for 31 years of corporate life and living in gated communities from Atlanta to Dallas. We loved

When did construction begin? Donna: Development began in 1999 at Main Street and Towne Road. Brenwick elected to work with a local land planner so that its layout would be conducive to Carmel and its architectural design an integral part of its appeal. The structures in the Village of WestClay have all been built in a style prior to the 1940’s; architecture classes actually come to study buildings here. Brenwick also wanted to have beautiful green spaces intermingled with homes and commercial areas. Joe: Walking the trails and sidewalks here provides an ongoing appreciation for the different styles of homes and the pride that people take

Donna: There is something about the Village of WestClay that makes residents not want to leave once they’ve come here. Over 250 households have moved within its boundaries and many have convinced family and friends to join them. Its social aspect is enriched with concerts in University Green, an Ice Cream Social, End of Summer Party, Fall Festival and too many clubs and field trips to mention.

Joe: The effort and commitment from neighborhood residents to enhance the Village environment has always been outstanding. When we first arrived we wanted to contribute as well, so we helped organize a social committee and started a monthly newsletter to communicate what was happening. I can guarantee that there is an activity or event that almost every resident can enjoy and participate in. Discuss the mix of homes, businesses and people that exist in the Village of WestClay. Joe: As of build-out the mix of housing types are: 1,032 single family homes, 199 townhouses, 63 Village Center lofts, 186 apartments/condos, and 216 senior housing units. We expect to see

The Stratford Senior Living is the only housing for seniors that is located in a neighborhood and offers the same amenities that every resident enjoys. Seniors can ride golf carts to the market or any other area, as well as walk in one of the many parks. With such diversified appeal, we see the inventory of home sites dwindling. Individuals and families are moving here now so they won’t miss the opportunity to live in such a remarkable neighborhood.
