A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles, in Just Six Months. (The smile you’ve always wanted)

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to. People tell me they feel stuck because they don’t want to wear metal braces for years, or they’re concerned that other corrective teeth straightening procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. I’m always looking into the the best technologies and procedures to give my patients the smile they’ve always dreamed about, and I’ve finally found an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution that can give you the smile you’ve always wanted—Six Month Smiles®. Great results in less time than you ever thought possible. Finding cosmetic solutions that fit your lifestyle. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one.

Letter from the Publisher

This edition of Carmel City Magazine marks a milestone in its four year history in that it coincides with the introduction of our online magazine. Although I believe that print will remain a viable source of information and entertainment, make no mistake that digital technology is here to stay. In the world we live today, communication must cover all platforms – print, desktop, tablets and mobile – in order to provide readers of all ages instant access to relevant, entertaining and educational media, anytime and anywhere. My grandchildren are already living the dream. I recently visited their school and found that all three, from second grade through seventh, were hard at work with not a pen and paper in sight. “Can you show me one of your books?” I asked. Silly me. Tap, slide, type, enter and bingo! Assignments, work sheets, you name it, would appear on screen. Amazing technology that doesn’t cause the apprehension we all sometimes experience.

Our new online magazine, www.CarmelCityMagazine.com, aspires to the same ease of use and the brilliant technology is based on HTML5 so that visual layout and content will magically reformat itself whether viewed on desktops, tablets or smart phones. At the touch of your finger will be interesting articles about everything Carmel, including people, places, what to do, where to shop or dine, recipes, health & beauty and more. There will be additional content not available in the print edition since the online version will be updated daily. Please sign up now to receive our free E-Subscription for EVERYTHING CARMEL INDIANA. You’ll find calendars with current events as well as a host of exclusive Carmel City Magazine coupons with savings on entertainment, shopping and dining. Let us know what you like and feel free to offer suggestions as well. We are excited about the future and look forward to sharing the best that Carmel has to offer its residents, newcomers and visitors. Publisher Steve Holloway Sholloway@CarmelCityMagazine.com

What’s New In Science & Medicine

Dr. FreD regnier Scientist and Entrepreneur

“Sometimes the solutions to problems exist before the problem is recognized.” So began a wide-ranging interview with Dr. Fred Regnier, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and newly retired this May after 45 years of teaching at Purdue University in Lafayette. This November he and his wife are moving into the Barrington of Carmel. Fred’s specialty is chromatography, a process which separates and/or purifies molecules for diagnostic and treatment purposes. His discoveries have led to the better treatment and prevention of diabetes and heart attacks. How? Let’s start at the beginning. Fred grew up on a cattle farm in Nebraska, where he learned the value of hard work and an appreciation for books from his parents. He met his wife Linda in a chemistry lab at Nebraska State College. “We were lab mates; she would make beautiful, pure crystals and I would do the write-up.” Both graduated in May of 1960 and were married in August that same year. He went on to a Ph. D. at Oklahoma State University and post-doctoral stays at University of Chicago and Harvard University, while Linda finished her M.S. in Housing and Interior Design. They arrived at Purdue in July of 1968 and welcomed their daughter Stephanie in 1970. What followed was a career in biochemistry and business. “The broad field in which I have worked my whole life is called ‘analytical biochemistry.’ The companies I co-founded resulted from this work.” Though Fred retired from teaching this year, his hand is still very much in the game with two out of five of those companies.

12

“Perfinity Bioscience focuses on developing and selling very rapid sampling tools. Through the use of our products, sample preparation times can be collapsed from 12 – 24 hours to a few minutes. They provide vital information for a hundred or more biomarkers, resulting in medications like insulin or those that

digest blood clots to aid recovery after heart attacks. Decisions can be made quickly and often with as little as a single drop of blood.” “Novilytic, on the other hand, makes test kits that are used for single, small molecules. One of our tests is for Vitamin D. Another kit that we’re working on will help identify concussions. With a pinprick of blood onto a small card, football players provide a baseline read before a game. Should they experience head trauma during play, a second pinprick can be compared to the first to quickly determine the trauma’s severity. “Sometimes the solutions We’re also excited about a new product to problems exist before that allows home sampling. Through a finger stick an individual or physician the problem is recognized.” can collect a drop of blood and then mail it to a lab for analysis. All our kits are developed to be cost effective and easy to use.” How did Fred come to integrate his teaching and academic research with such successful companies? “It started with a summer sabbatical at Corning Glass Works in Massachusetts in 1974. Corning had decided to do biological science by immobilizing enzymes on glass. I liked the idea so went to work on lab diagnostic kits for hospitals. That experience taught me how to think about science as it relates to business.” Linda added that her husband does this naturally. “We’ll be driving down the street and Fred will see someone mowing the lawn. He’ll wonder, ‘How can we make that process easier? And what could we do with the clippings?’ A simple trip morphs into mental aerobics. This kind of outlook can be very stimulating and sometimes exhausting.” Fred has received world-wide recognition as a result of his diligent research, most recently with the American Chemical Society Award in Separation Science and Technology. He takes even greater pride, however, in the success of his students, 80 of whom have received a Ph.D. degree of their own. “When you’re around 20-50 students, all of whom are thinking and talking a mile a minute, you get exposed to so many more ideas than you would by yourself. It is enormously enriching.” During the next phase in their lives, Fred and Linda look forward to new friends and surroundings at The Barrington. According to Fred, “My objective for many years has been to make a difference by filling a need in society. I have learned that can be done through teaching or bringing products to the market place that are new and useful. Novilytic and Perfinity are vehicles that allow me to continue doing that, although in a different way than when I was at Purdue.” Sounds like a formula for a successful second half.

vision For the Future Barrett Eye Care

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye that keeps light and images from reaching the retina. Cataract surgery involves the removal of the cloudy, natural lens of the eye followed by the placement of a synthetic, implantable intraocular lens. With the development of new, deluxe intraocular lenses, ophthalmology has entered an exciting phase for doctors and patients alike. Today’s cataract surgeries are performed with small incisions that don’t even require stitches. High speed ultrasound is used to remove the cataract, and the replacement lens is then inserted through the same tiny incision. A local sedation is used and the surgery usually only lasts 10-15 minutes. Only one eye is done at a time with the second typically occurring two weeks after the first. While everyone heals differently, most patients return to normal activities within a few days following surgery. There is one important decision for patients to make prior to surgery, and that is the type of vision they would like to have afterwards. Currently, there are three “categories” of lenses to choose from and the choice of lens directly affects the patient’s dependence upon glasses following cataract surgery. Standard Intraocular Lens: This is the standard lens selected by a majority of patients. With this lens, most patients are able to see well in the distance without glasses but still need glasses to read. Medicare and all insurance companies cover this lens so there is no out-of-pocket cost. Deluxe Astigmatism-Correcting Lens: For those patients who have more than one diopter of astigmatism, this lens can correct that astigmatism. With this lens, most patients are able to see well in the distance without glasses but still need glasses to read. Because this is an upgraded lens, there is an additional cost to the patient over and above insurance reimbursements. Deluxe Bi-Focal Lenses: With this lens, diffraction optics helps maximize both distance and near vision without glasses, while intermediate vision may still be a little blurry. It too carries additional out-of-pocket costs to the patient. Revolutionary designs continue to transform results for cataract patients with a simple procedure that can change their lives. Fast & aFForDable CosmetiC ProCeDures Chegar Facial Plastic Surgery

Much has changed since I started my surgical training in 2000. Botox had yet to enter the cosmetic market, laser skin treatments required 2-3 weeks of recovery and the most popular wrinkle fillers were derived from animal collagen and necessitated an allergy test before treatment. The modern era of facial rejuvenation has been shaped by a fast-paced world where people work later in life and need to maintain a youthful appearance to stay competitive. Today, our most popular treatments to keep the deep lines from setting in require as little as 15 minutes over a lunch break and leave no tell-tale traces of a cosmetic treatment later that day. And with this demand has come product competition with more affordable pricing. When Botox Cosmetic was first introduced in 2002, paying $500 or more for a frown line treatment was typical. Now patients can choose from Botox, Dysport or Xeomin and pay $200 or less for the same treatment.

Wrinkle fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero last 2-3 times longer than the collagen fillers that were commonly used in 2000. And now with products such as Sculptra Aesthetic, it is possible to stimulate our body’s own collagen growth with results that can last for several years. Even surgical procedures have improved. Targeting specific problem areas, mini-facelifts can treat sagging cheeks, jawlines and the upper neck with a smaller incision. This less invasive technique, in addition to a decreased need for anesthesia and postoperative medications, diminishes the recovery period from weeks to days. As we continue to make innovations in cosmetic facial rejuvenation, treatments will become longer lasting and more accessible to those with limited schedules and budgets. The future of facial cosmetic surgery is certainly bright! Written by Burke Chegar, MD www.chegarfps.com

LaSEr SkIN rEjuvENatIoN Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery Laser technology has advanced greatly over the past several years. Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing (Active FX) and CO2 Laser Resurfacing are my top recommended procedures for patients who are looking to maximally reverse the signs of aging and sun damage on their skin. The first of our featured procedures – Active FX (Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing) – is the result of the latest advancement in laser technology. This procedure yields remarkable, long lasting results with just one treatment. Skin resurfacing is complete in three to five days and is a great option for those patients who have a busy lifestyle. Darker skin types may receive these treatments with appropriate precautions and reduced settings. Active FX treatments will always be tailored according to the nature and extent of your skin damage, skin type and individual requirements for down time. The second procedure – CO2 Laser Resurfacing – offers an excellent option for those looking for a dramatic improvement in facial wrinkles, sun damage and acne scarring. I have lectured and written extensively on CO2 laser resurfacing and firmly believe that it is a great option for select patients. CO2 laser resurfacing is typically done under general anesthesia. I utilize the Ultrapulse Encore from Lumenis, the most recognized and respected system in the field. During the procedure the laser removes the topmost layers of skin while tightening the deepest layers. Patients experience downtime of 10 days to two weeks. CO2 laser is only for patients who are highly motivated to make a dramatic change in their skin and recognize the downtime needed to make those changes. Results can be truly amazing. Chiropractic Healing Himsel Chiropractic

After graduating from Purdue University with a bachelor degree in Health Science in 2003 and Logan University with a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree in 2006, I have been treating patients for over six years. During this period I have witnessed many miracles with chiropractic care. My staff and I refer to these as “mini miracles because we believe that healing from any condition comes from above. Since the power that made the body mends the body, our practice focuses on healing from above-down and inside-out. Every human has a spine, so NO ONE is exempt from receiving chiropractic care. Our practice works with patients from newborns to geriatrics; everyone can experience the healing power of chiropractic. Pediatric care is one specialty where we inevitably get a lot of questions and inquiry as to what we can help. The top ten reasons children are treated in our office are: birth, colic, allergies, gas pains, stomach issues, constipation, diarrhea, asthma, bed wetting, and ear infections. Each of these areas deals with disruption in nerve flow and improper nerve innervation to the affected organ/area. With pediatric care, gentle palpation is used to determine the area of nerve interference. Once the affected areas are diagnosed, gentle fingertip adjustments are then made to correct the nerve interference. Pediatric adjustments are safe, gentle, and extremely effective. Our ultimate goal is to have the child completely dependent upon their own body without the use of any medications. Over three-fourths of our practice is made up of children, families and maternity patients. There are virtually endless conditions that chiropractic care can benefit. Nothing is too big or small. One recent rare condition reported to our office was that of a young girl suffering from RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy; also known as complex regional pain syndrome). Patients who suffer from RSD have chronic, severe pain. After the first adjustment delivered to the young girl, she experienced immediate relief of pain in her mid-back and was able to sleep through the night for the first time in over a year. With ongoing chiropractic care, she has been able to regain much of her normal lifestyle. We even have plans to get her back to her favorite sport of running! Weight Control

Medical Obesity Management of Indiana The world of weight loss is wacky. Are raspberry ketones the answer? They worked for your friend. Maybe if you take garcinia cambogia? It was featured on TV. Do you need bariatric surgery? What are you willing to do to lose the weight? If you ask yourself these questions day after day, clearly whatever you’re doing is not working for you. This is where the professional advice of a physician specifically trained in Obesity Medicine can be of service. The disease of obesity (yes, it is now considered a disease) is a complex condition. Genetic, medical, hormonal, emotional and social components are involved. Side effects of carrying those extra pounds are significant. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, fatty liver and many cancers are associated with being overweight or obese. It is an epidemic in this country and Indiana is tied for the eighth fattest state. We need help. As a board certified physician by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, my entire practice is devoted to helping patients decipher the confusing choices offered to those who need to lose weight. As a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, I am also dedicated to following a scientifically based program without gimmicks or false promises. That is why I started Medical Obesity Management of Indiana; to provide the guidance necessary to insure that you have the best weight loss experience possible, and monitor you medically as your health improves. There are many ways to achieve weight loss. One of the greatest ways is not hot off the press but is tried and true. Very Low Calorie Diets have been around for years but they work. I carefully combine meal replacements, protein supplements and real food to supply 800-900 calories each day, but with 80-100 grams of protein. This provides enough calories to carry on your normal life and enough protein so that you lose fat and not muscle. Portion control is key! It takes time and commitment to learn habits that will keep your weight off for life, but it is worth it. At MOMI you’ll learn techniques for making wise food choices during tricky social events, and coping mechanisms for stressful situations that can lead to emotional eating. It can be life changing when you learn to “eat to live rather than live to eat,” and exciting to discover a method to extend your health and longevity. Witnessing the transformations that result from my weight loss programs is exciting for me too. Written by Dr. Jennifer Whirley-Diaz www.momiweightloss.com 19

WINNINg SMILES Carmel Dental Care, PC I grew up in Carmel and attended all Carmel schools, so after graduating from the Indiana School of Dentistry it was a natural transition for me to return here. I’ve since joined Dr. Sandra Bacon, my childhood dentist, who has a state-of-the-art practice and a caring, professional staff. They have welcomed me into the family. It was during my junior year in college that I decided on dental school as opposed to medical school. I love dentistry for many reasons, but the opportunities to develop lasting relationships with patients and to implement the fine detail and artistry it encompasses are what attracted me most. As a recent graduate, I find the strides that have been made in implant dentistry completely fascinating. Essentially, implants replace missing teeth. First, a small surgery is completed in which the implant is placed into the jaw bone. The surrounding bone must then incorporate into grooves within the implant in a process called “osseointegration.” Following this, a dentist will design a crown that matches the adjacent teeth in color, shape and size. This crown will be cemented to an abutment piece that is placed within the implant. The result is a completely functional, aesthetic and long-lasting replacement. Besides individual tooth replacement, implants are also extremely beneficial in denture treatment. Implant-supported overdentures involve the placement of a few implants into the jaw bone. The denture then essentially snaps into the implants, providing increased denture stability. The implant procedure takes approximately 3 – 4 months, with some case-based variation. During this time the patient may have a temporary tooth replacement so as to not go without a tooth during the osseointegration process. Dental implants have been around for decades, though technology has made great strides in its implementation. Historically, implants have a 95% + success rate, and they can last for over 40 years. Patients can expect the implant to completely restore function to their dentition, just as a natural tooth would. Also, the aesthetics of an implant are second only to that of a natural tooth, and most times it is very difficult for the untrained eye to tell an implant from a natural one. Most importantly, implants can return absolute confidence to a smile, and thus, an individual. I look forward to many years of helping patients in my practice experience the best in modern dentistry. Headache Relief Keystone Dentistry

Medical technology has changed the landscape of how diseases are diagnosed and treated. This has affected the dental field as well. One of the most significant changes has been our discovery of how amazingly connected systemic medical health is to dental health. Today more than ever, we understand the connection to the bacteria that live in our mouth and its effect on heart disease, stroke, diabetes and low birth weight babies. We have also discovered the relationship between teeth, chewing muscles and migraine headaches. This is tremendously exciting news for people who suffer from chronic headache pain or migraines, and have relied on medications for relief. Daily pain can dramatically alter lives with negative effects on personality, families and careers. An understanding of how teeth uniquely position the jaw, and how the jaw relates to the muscles of the head and neck, has led to treatments that significantly relieve headache pain. Headaches result from a multitude of factors and sources of origin. Modern dentistry has better learned to correctly diagnose and treat pain at its source. Generally speaking, headache pain that has a dental component is muscular in nature with neurological input from the teeth. Treatment therefore focuses on achieving muscle relaxation with modalities including cold laser, ultrasound, therapeutic massage, bite force balancing, and splint therapy. In many cases we also use therapeutic Botox. Botox is the only FDA approved treatment for migraines; the many other drugs being used are all off-label. I have found that proper combination of these treatments yields meaningful relief for pain in these patients. Prevention can be very simple in that muscle hyperactivity and/or fatigue is at the root of this problem. Anything that causes the muscles of the head or neck to be active is the first place to look. Gum chewing, daytime clenching or nighttime grinding are common, so stopping or reducing these activities is important. Your dentist can recommend a solution that is appropriate. Typically nighttime mouthpieces have been utilized, but simple awareness has been shown to have very positive results. Public awareness of a dental component in managing chronic headaches and migraines is happening, but slowly. Part of the challenge is the intersection of neurology, sports medicine and dentistry with no clear “owner. If all of these disciplines are consulted, many people can be helped only after determining which approach is the most effective. Hopefully, reading an article about dentistry and pain management will lead someone to a better quality of life. Written by Wayne Kinney, DDS www.keystonedentistry.com 22

Up The Odds against flu

Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every year, as many as 49,000 people in the United States die from influenza or related complications, according to the CDC, with the vast majority of victims being 65 years and older. Flu season in the United States typically begins in October and can last as late as May. During this time, viruses that cause the flu circulate through the population. The CDC recommends the flu shot as the best protection against contracting influenza. A person who receives the flu vaccine is 60 percent less likely to need treatment by a healthcare provider. Getting the vaccine has been shown to offer substantial benefits, including reducing illness, antibiotic use, time lost from work, hospitalizations and deaths. 27

health & beauty

People should get the flu shot as soon as it becomes available in their community, usually in late September or early October. Receiving the vaccine during this timeframe will protect you for the duration of the flu season and spare you from long waits and possible shortages as flu season unfolds.

Personalized Professional Skin Care in a Boutique Setting

There are two types of vaccines: The nasal-spray flu vaccine is made with weakened flu viruses administered through the nostrils. It is approved for use in healthy people ages 2 through 49 years who are not pregnant. The flu shot is an inactivated vaccine that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions. There are three different flu shots available: • A regular flu shot approved for people ages 6 months and older • A high-dose flu shot approved for people 65 and older, and • An intradermal flu shot approved for people 18 to 64 years of age.

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

People who have a history of severe reaction to flu shots, severe allergies to chicken eggs or are currently suffering from a moderate-to-severe illness should consult their doctor before getting the vaccine.

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

cARMEL FActS & FiGURES • Population of 81,534 • City named “The Best Place To Live in America” by Money Magazine • 6th highest per capita income in US • 58.5% of residents hold bachelor’s degree or higher • Lowest overall tax rate in the state for city this size or larger • Carmel High School has 96% graduation rate • 93% of Carmel High School students attend college • Carmel Clay Public Library is ranked 6th nationwide
