Letter from the Editor

When I sit down to work at my desk, the cat often stretches out on the L-shaped side by the window. Abbey’s getting older so she loves the warm sunlight and makes herself comfortable on whatever happens to be there. It’s a relaxing, companionable arrangement for both of us. Problems arise if I need to get the stuff she’s lying on. For instance, the phone rings and someone has questions about an article. I can see the pertinent info underneath Abbey, so I gently try to dislodge her. Fat chance, the cat isn’t moving. Did I mention she’s a biter? “No bite, NO BITE,” I say and my business conversation goes to holy hell-o. Spray water bottles are effective but they’re never around when I need them. That being said, it’s been an entertaining magazine to put together. My interview with Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, the President/CEO of The Center for the Performing Arts, was a pleasure and an eye-opener. Who has that kind of energy? The day we met, Tania had just completed the Center’s fiscal year and created the road map for its next three years…whew. For an appreciation of Carmel’s marvelous performing arts center and the woman at its helm, visit our feature Inside TCFTPA.

Food continues to be a hot topic and two stories will tempt your taste buds. Annessa Chumbley, our resident foodie, chats with the owner of J. Razzo’s Italian Restaurant in the second of our series “Great Chefs.” What a nice man and great restaurant! See photo with John, Annessa and me above. And then we have Grand Pizza Tour. Nine restaurants are featured in the article, but so many more are waiting to be sampled that the staff has decided to visit every one of them. Follow us this fall on our @CarmelCityMag Twitter feed and Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/CarmelCityMagazine as we eat our way through area parlors. There’s lots more to read in this issue that will keep you up to date on everything that’s happening in our city. The Community Calendar at www.carmelcitymagazine.com is updated daily and you can subscribe to Weekend 101 for weekly information. Me, I’ll be busy ordering pizza, attending shows – and keeping the cat off my desk. Jackie Holloway, Editor Jholloway@CarmelCityMagazine.com

Inside The Center for the Performing Arts with Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, President/CEO Interview by Jackie Holloway As anyone who has been anywhere in Carmel can attest, the Palladium commands immediate attention. Its classic dome sits atop a symmetrical four-sided structure with an elegant façade quarried from Indiana limestone. Built to last for the ages, the Palladium is the crown jewel of the Center for the Performing Arts. And that’s just the exterior. Inside the Palladium’s grand concert hall you’ll experience a landmark in listening created by incredible acoustics. Think you’ve heard it all? Try any one of the 1600 seats and there’s nary a misplaced note. It’s pure unadulterated entertainment in a grand yet comfortable setting.

12

Across Center Green that fronts the Palladium are two equally impressive venues. The Tarkington stages drama,

musicals, dance and other presentations inside a 500 seat theater. Look for comedy, dance and cabaret with flexible seating at The Studio Theater next door. Together with The Palladium, the three venues provide an infinite range of performance opportunities. Of course, the heart and soul of any center for the arts lies in its programs, people and community outreach. Tania Castroverde Moskalenko recently completed her second year as the Center’s President and CEO and knows more than

“...the Palladium commands immediate attention.

anyone the pleasures and challenges of managing a sophisticated arts organization. We sat down with her this

13

summer to discuss the past two years and what she expects in the future. When Tania first joined the Center for the Performing Arts in August 2012, she came by way of the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. She served a seven year tenure there as Executive Director and during that period turned an operating deficit into a surplus. “All of us in the arts are part of an international community”, Tania observes, “so I watched the evolution of Carmel’s Center with great interest. From the beginning I admired its architecture and aspirations. When I received an invitation to come here, I knew it was a tremendous opportunity.” Tania notes that Germantown and Carmel share similar characteristics. “Both are affluent cities, both lie outside a large metropolitan area and each enjoys strong local support.” After she assumed her position here as President, did she feel a need to modify or improve? “I see my role as a community builder, a curator and a connector and wanted to learn more about Carmel. Our mission statement says it best: The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to welcome, engage, inspire and transform through compelling performing arts experiences in a world-class environment. That’s what I strive toward each and every day.”

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

With so many aspects to managing an organization this size, I asked how she prioritizes her responvsibilities. “Since the Center is non-profit, I view fund-raising as one of my priorities. Our current patron base includes all 92 counties in Indiana, 49 states and 16 countries. For some reason New Mexico hasn’t bought a ticket ... yet. Most of our repeat customers come from Hamilton County.” What about competition from downtown Indy and venues like Clowes Hall? “The arts benefit when there are lots of players in the game; competition eliminates mediocrity. The CFTPA attracts world class artists and we make them accessible to everyone. Exposure to the arts is always a good thing and in this case, more is better. I believe that a high tide floats all boats.” 14

While nonprofit organizations are struggling nationally,

“... you’ll experience a landmark in listening created by incredible acoustics.” the Center for the Performing Arts is thriving. Tania is especially pleased with its programs for youth. “Children become more civilized when they receive an arts education. If they choose to study one of its disciplines, whether it be instrumental or performance, they’ll carry that discipline into all areas the rest of their lives. At the Center we provide affordable tickets to students so that it costs less to bring them to a show instead of leaving them with a sitter. Student tickets are only $15 for any fine arts production, quite an incentive when you consider the price of sitters.” Tania is also proud of a new series offered to children between the ages of one - seven. Called “Peanut Butter & Jam,” sessions encourage active and enthusiastic participation in music and dance. These informal Saturday morning concerts run about 30 minutes and are as lively as they are educational. The cost is $10 per child and parents are free, so check out the website at

TheCenterPresents.org for dates and times. 15

I asked Tania which shows have been the most successful thus far. “There’s no question that the Great American Songbook and Country series have attracted the largest audiences. Michael Feinstein, our artistic director, is known as the ambassador of the Great American Songbook, which features music from Broadway and Hollywood musicals prevalent in the 1920’s to 1960’s. We’ll continue to present these very popular programs as well as introduce new ones to the community. Maybe push the envelope a little bit, too.” So the future is looking good? “I’m excited about so many performances on our 2014-15 calendar that it’s hard to know where to begin. Since I was a dancer, I have to mention a few of the contemporary dance companies. The Tania PerezSalas Compania de Danza Contemporanea from Mexico City is visually stunning and appears in November. Another standout is Diavolo in January, whose daring performances fuse ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip hop. And Samite from Uganda will perform in October… his flutes and vocals are amazing! The Center for the Performing Arts will bring many different art forms and many remarkable artists to the stage in Carmel, 16

and all of them will be available and accessible to everyone.” Learn more about the Center for the Performing Arts 2014-15 season performances, dates and tickets at:

Co-founders Cynthia Collins, Don Farrell and Judy Fitzgerald established ATI in 2005. Their combined 82+ years in the professional performing arts have enabled them to create meaningful and entertaining theatre experiences for the central Indiana community. ATI is thrilled to begin their 4th season in the Studio Theater and their 10th anniversary season of Broadway In Your Backyard. This year’s line-up of shows promises to have something for everyone beginning with the classic musical, My Fair Lady (September 12 -28). The new year begins with the only play in our season, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps ( January 30 – February 15). Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, throw in a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps.

Great Chefs:

JOHN PERAZZO inveiwed by Annessa Chumbley, RD

Cheesy, saucy, rustic lasagna, made with no apologies. Sound good? If you’re looking for big, hearty, bold Italian flavors, there’s a restaurant in your backyard you need to visit! The heart of the owner mirrors his menu... so meet J. Razzo’s John Perazzo. John has a captivating story and dry sense of humor. Originally from New Jersey, he tells me he ended up in Indiana when he came to Butler for college...to play basketball, he joked. J. Razzo’s sophisticated, contemporary ambiance and classic Italian food make for a relaxing and fulfilling evening.

Q:

A:

Not to be too candid, but there are many Italian restaurants. What do you think sets your restaurant apart?

Well, I think there are three things, first and foremost being the quality of our food. I often shop at the Carmel Farmer’s Market for fresh local vegetables. Everything we make should taste like the best dish a person has had. Second is the friendliness of our servers and staff. Third is the secret ingredient – personal touch. We genuinely care about everyone who walks through that door.

... sophisticated, contemporary ambiance and classic Italian food make for a relaxing & fulfilling evening.

Q:

You own this restaurant, so we’re sure there are many roles you fulfill. Where can you be found on a busy Friday or Saturday night?

A:

As the host. I stand at the door every night. I feel it is important for people to see the same friendly face when they walk through the door. Also, this allows me to keep up with everything that goes on in my restaurant. I enjoy talking to my customers!

Q: A: Q: A: 34

Who inspired you to cook and love Italian food?

Lasagna

Q: A:

My grandfather. He came to Ellis Island from Italy. People from the whole neighborhood would come over to eat – and he loved every minute of it. I learned then that cooking and great food bring people together. It’s obvious you take a lot of pride in your food and restaurant. If there is one word you want to come to your customer’s minds when they think of your food, what would it be? Consistent…and fresh, to throw in a second. I believe reliability is one of the greatest strengths, and I want my customers to count on my restaurant to deliver delicious Italian food every single time.

Q:

A:

Tell me about your menu. It’s classic Italian, and we rotate our menu four times a year. Think lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken Parmigiano, pasta, risotto, and fresh fish... lots of fresh fish. Our Lasagna is by far our most popular menu item. After that come Chicken Parmigiano and Chicken Veneto. We do a lot of cooking with red and white wines. Red always goes with the tomato items, and white wine with fish and vegetables. How do you create new menu items? My head cook and I create something, then we have the staff try it, and we continue to tweak it until we get it perfected. I have the best kitchen and cooks. Whenever I hire a new cook, they always say it’s their favorite place

Chicken Veneto

they’ve worked. We never yell, never get stressed. We just enjoy our food and our customers!

Q:

What advice would you give to aspiring restaurant owners or young food-lovers?

What’s your favorite thing to make?

A:

The best way to learn anything and everything about food is by cooking it yourself....that uses all the senses and is the best teacher.

Pestos. The smell is fresh, the taste is fresh. We like to get creative in coming up with new kinds....they are a defining item in Italian cooking. Do you stay on top of food trends and try new techniques with your dishes? Definitely! Lately we have been into lemons for their flavor and nutritional aspect. We freeze the entire lemon, and then grate it into dishes and sauces. Favorite ingredient? Garlic. It goes in everything.

... The smell is fresh, the taste is fresh. We like to get creative ...

Q: A:

What’s your favorite thing about your profession? Meeting and greeting people. Through the years, my customers have really become my friends. I get to know my customers...their home, their kids, where they like to sit, etc. I want to serve them and make them feel relaxed. 35

... my customers have really become my friends.

Q:

We all like to know what’s in our restaurant owner’s home refrigerator & pantry. What’s in yours?

A:

A variety of cheese, my favorite being Parmigiano-Reggiano, garlic, a variety of vinegars, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, and peanut butter. That last one is my favorite late night snack!

Q: A:

and the Grouper with Tomato Risotto (it’s no secret that I love food!). The Italian Wedge was perhaps one of the best salads I’ve ever enjoyed. I highly recommend it. The Caprese features fresh, ripe, Indiana tomatoes, and was equally delicious. Wonderful evening, wonderful restaurant. J. Razzo’s will cater to specific allergies.

Where do you like to eat in Carmel? Pizzology. I order a pasta dish and then end with a traditional pizza with sausage. Their food is delicious.

Go for lunch or dinner ...

I had the pleasure of trying the Walleye in a panko crust with Vegetable Risotto. Fantastic! I enjoyed every bite. The Walleye was light and flaky, perfectly cooked, and the risotto was melt-in-your-mouth creamy and filled with flavor. I came back and had the Italian Wedge salad, and the Caprese Salad (yes, two salads),

Grand

PIZZA Tour

here’s been a pizza explosion in the city of Carmel. We counted 21—that’s right—21 dedicated pizza parlors…and that doesn’t include restaurants that dish it alongside traditional fare. Only nine eateries are featured in the following pages, so the staff of CCM has decided to take up the task of visiting every pizza place in the surrounding area. Our grand pizza tour will launch this September. Each meal will be chronicled with photos and cheesy commentary on www.CarmelCityMagazine.com as well as on our @CarmelCityMag Twitter feed and Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/ CarmelCityMagazine Undaunted by its scope, the staff is up for the challenge. In the upcoming months we invite you to follow us on Twitter, join us on Facebook and check out our home page as we slice our way through legions of hot, savory pizza pies. That’s amore! photos by Kaylee Purcell

Channeling the holiday spirit used to mean setting up traditional décor, sitting down to heavy meals and going through tasteless buffets. That approach just doesn’t cut it anymore in today’s celebrations. Simple jack-o-lanterns and cut-out turkeys have been updated with a blend of eclectic and modern styles spiced with personal touches. The increased popularity of Pinterest and other DIY websites has taken decorating in a whole new direction. Contemporary tastes have morphed colors into hot, swanky and vibrant tones. This can avoid competition with busy calendars while trying to get the office staff or family together. During the months of January and February people are more relaxed and able to enjoy themselves. Discounts may even be available as these are off-season for caterers and vendors. However you choose to decorate or entertain, it should reflect your family’s character, wishes and lifestyle. Whether you’re a DIYer or you hire a professional caterer, adding your personal touches will result in a memorable occasion.

With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles, in Just Six Months. (The smile you’ve always wanted)

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to. People tell me they feel stuck because they don’t want to wear metal braces for years, or they’re concerned that other corrective teeth straightening procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. I’m always looking into the the best technologies and procedures to give my patients the smile they’ve always dreamed about, and I’ve finally found an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution that can give you the smile you’ve always wanted—Six Month Smiles®. Great results in less time than you ever thought possible. Finding cosmetic solutions that fit your lifestyle. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one.

Call us at (317) 575-1120. Let’s talk. www.keystonedentistry.com

FATbusters

Sometimes, no matter how many crunches, that last inch or two of belly fat keeps hanging on. Some relatively new procedures can do wonders for eliminating those stubborn inches. Gaining national attention on the Dr. Oz show, the procedures were referred to as Vanquish, which utilizes radiofrequency, and Liposonix, which uses ultrasound to burn fat. These same processes are available at a handful of spas right here in Carmel.

The procedure at the Silver Door Spa on Range Line Road is called CaviLipo. This service is unique in that it utilizes ultrasound to heat fat deposits, allowing the body to remove the deposits in a natural way. Infrared light is also used as part of CaviLipo to increase tightening of skin.

Cavi-Liip available at Silver Door Spa

“This is not a surgery or a one-day fix,” said Cortney Reiselman, president of the Silver Door Spa. “This treatment is for people who are healthy but are unable to get rid of fat through diet and exercise.” At 7E Fit Spa on 116th street, the procedure is called Torc Plus. Angeline Clapp, 7E’s manager, stated this is one of her favorite options for clients. She stresses that it not only contours the body, but that it also increases core strength and improves posture in as little as one session. Kimberly Ross is a Licensed Aesthetician at Ology Spa on North Illinois Street. A medical aesthetician is specially trained and often provides a variety of services, products, and consultations to help improve and maintain a client’s health and appearance.

Torc Plus available at 7E Fit Spa

“Here at Ology we do our best to deliver 5 star services, and I’m proud to say I believe we do,” Kimberly said. “My coworkers and I are highly trained in our field. We make sure each guest receives top notch treatment which results in a great experience and a positive outcome.” Ology Spa is different in that it uses RF therapy rather than ultrasound. This is a selective radiofrequency called Exilis Elite, which is non-invasive and works on the face or the body to tighten skin and reduce fat. It can be used in many areas, including the waist (muffin tops), back and thighs. Not only does the procedure remove the last traces of unwanted fat; it also reduces wrinkles. The FDA has approved the process of deep tissue heating. An important bonus is that the procedure takes little time to complete, and normal activity can be resumed immediately as there is no after-care. The facilities each require a 15 to 45 minute consultation prior to the procedure. The average treatment session is 30 minutes. Each spa has its own way of planning and performing the treatment or series of treatments. Ology Spa tends to see their best results with Vanquish and Exilis Elite treatments after about four sessions, while

Silver Door Spa sometimes goes up to six with CaviLipo. “Eighty percent of our clients see results after a single treatment. We have them feel the areas that we will work on before the treatment and then afterwards. They can tell that the fat underneath the skin has liquefied. It feels “watery” until their body processes this out,” says Cortney at Silver Door. “We have quite a few clients who ask for other areas to be treated after they’ve had their first series.” How much will it cost? That depends on the size of the area needing treatment and the amount of fat to be lost. The range at local spas is between $89 and $2,800, depending on the modality of treatment and the extent of services performed.

procedure. Regular exercise and a balanced diet help to increase and maintain positive results. Ology recommends drinking 64 ounces of water daily, as well. Gaining weight will negatively affect results. Cortney from Silver Door jokes, “You can’t leave after your treatments and drive through a fast food chain and expect to see the results you’d like to achieve. We encourage patients to continue with their healthy lifestyle and compare Cavi-Lipo to the ‘icing on the cake’.”

Exilis Elite available at Ology Spa

There are few side effects. According to ongoing studies at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in Chicago, there are no significant safety concerns. As it is non-invasive, it does not pose the same risks as surgeries such as liposuction. The AAD has reported mild bruising in some studies. Ology has seen rare cases of minor bruising and swelling, while Cortney at Silver Door Spa has had reports of additional trips to the restroom until the fat has been processed out of the client’s system. All three indicated the most frequent side effect is reddening of the area for a short time after treatment. Limitations do exist, but are specific to each spa’s guidelines and are reached based on the individual; none will perform the treatment on pregnant or nursing individuals. Each spa stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle after the

Angeline from 7E stressed that results vary from person to person. “It depends how motivated a person is to see good results. Someone who works out and eats well will generally have better results than someone who eats pizza on a daily basis.” Kimberly Ross stated that “Exilis Elite is one of my favorite treatments of all those we provide.” Potential clients are invited to visit each spa’s website or contact a representative about these procedures and to explore a full menu of each spa’s distinctive services.

Indiana Parenting understanding the guidelines

Indiana is one of a few states that has parenting time guidelines to assist parents who are divorced or separated. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide parents with a schedule detailing the minimum amount of time that a fit parent should have with his or her children. Importantly, the schedule set forth in the guidelines is a floor, not a ceiling. Parents should be encouraged to provide parenting time in excess of the guidelines when appropriate. Many settlement agreements and court orders incorporate by reference the general or basic provisions of the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines. However, care should be taken to educate clients about the meaning of these provisions. Here’s an overview of the general rules that apply to parenting time:

Communication Parents should keep one another informed of their address and contact information. Each parent should be permitted to have private conversations with the child, free of interference from the other party. Both parents should have reasonable access with the child by telephone, regular mail, and email. Parents must notify each other when the child has plans to travel out of the vicinity. Both parents should take care to promote positive relationships between the child and the other parent. Implementing Parenting Time The parent receiving the

by Alicia Wanker, Associate CAMPBELL KYLE PROFFITT LLP

child for parenting time is responsible for transportation at the start of parenting time. Punctuality is important, and parents should have the child ready for the parenting time exchange. Anytime a delay is expected, parents should notify one another in advance. Appropriate clothing should be provided with the child, and that

99

clothing shall be cleaned and promptly returned at the conclusion of parenting time. Parents must also respect the privacy of one another’s residences and may not enter the residence of the other unless given express permission.

Changes in Scheduled Parenting Time Both parties are

responsible for following parenting time orders. Situations may arise where one parent needs to adjust the parenting time schedule. The parent needing to alter the schedule should notify the other parent in advance. Both parents should attempt to adjust the parenting time schedule. If this adjustment results in one parent losing time, make-up parenting time should be exercised as soon as possible. When it becomes necessary for the child to be cared for by a person other than a parent or responsible household family member, the parent needing the child care should first offer the additional parenting time to the other parent. There is no obligation to accept this additional parenting time, and it shall be done at no cost and without altering the child support calculation.

Exchange of Information

Both parents should have access to school records and health information. Additionally, parents should inform one another regarding the child’s activities, and should not interfere with a parent’s attendance at events or access to this information.

Disagreements regarding Parenting Time Certainly, disagree-

ments regarding parenting time or interpretation of the guidelines can arise. In those situations, care should be taken to exclude the child from disputes. If the child is reluctant to participate in parenting time, parents are responsible for ensuring compliance. Children are not permitted to choose whether parenting time takes place. Importantly, parenting time should not be withheld in retaliation for a parent’s failure to comply with a court order; rather, court intervention and the imposition of sanctions are appropriate remedies for non-compliance.

The Indiana Supreme Court revised the guidelines last year, which became effective on March 1, 2013. The revised guidelines apply automatically to parenting time orders issued after March 1, 2013. They do not automatically apply retroactively to orders issued prior to March 1, 2013; however, parents may agree in subsequent orders to incorporate the revised guidelines. Parenting time issues can be complicated and representation by an experienced attorney is a key component to a successful resolution. Campbell Kyle Proffitt has several attorneys skilled in complex family law issues and we welcome the opportunity to assist you.

Letter from the Publisher

It seems like yesterday that our team at Blue Heron Publications, LLC started Carmel City Magazine, but it’s been over five years of articles about interesting people, places and things to do. Hard to believe. In this short time Carmel has continued to grow as fast as ever, solidifying its position per Money Magazine as the number one place to live in the USA. As Carmel fills its borders, expansion has moved north into the once sleepy city of Westfield. There you’ll find new neighborhoods, shopping centers, restaurants, schools and a sports park like no other in the country. Westfield has also gained national recognition by earning a top 10 spot in Family Circle Magazine’s annual list of America’s best communities to raise families. With all the excitement that Westfield is generating, we decided to grow as well. This issue introduces the first print and digital edition of Westfield City Magazine at www.WestfieldCityMagazine.com that promises to promote the best that the city has to offer. Entertainment, dining, health & beauty, fitness & recreation, nightlife, arts & entertainment, antiques and automotive…all this and more will be covered. Also included are special sections with maps, events and human interest stories about its businesses, people and places. The objective is to make Westfield City Magazine THE city magazine for residents, newcomers and thousands of visitors alike. Distribution is via hundreds of free pick up racks throughout the city including retail stores, restaurants, banks, Grand Junction, Westfield City buildings and all 14 area hotels in both Westfield and Carmel. Because most businesses are locally owned, ads in the magazine are competitively sized and priced so that everyone, large and small, can afford to advertise on a consistent basis. We look forward to sharing with our readers EVERYTHING WESTFIELD INDIANA. Join us on the journey by picking up a copy of Westfield City Magazine at a local business today. If you have suggestions or story ideas, please forward to my email below. Congratulations Westfield on your growing success! ust like the changes Dorothy saw from Kansas to Oz, so goes the transformation of the landscape around the City of Westfield. From humble Quaker beginnings and acres of farmland, Westfield has emerged into a hub of activity. Westfield is home to Bridgewater Golf Club, hosting international tournaments, and Grand Park, which stands to be the largest multi-sport facility not just in Indiana but in the United States. What started as a small town founded by Quakers from North Carolina is now one of Central Indiana’s newest thriving cities. Westfield was founded in 1834 by four men of the Religious Society of Friends – Asa Bales, Simon Moon, Ambrose Osborne, and Nathan Parker. It is thought that the town was initially set up to function as a stop for the Underground Railroad. Whether that is the case or not, it is a fact that Westfield was a very important stop on

Bales Park and past the Old Friends Cemetery where several of the founding families and their descendants are buried. Other parks in Westfield bear the names of these dedicated men including Osborne Park on Ditch Road and Simon Moon Park next to the Westfield City Services Building on 171st Street. Quaker Park, a water and play area, is just one more of several other parks named after the group of pioneers who

the Underground Railroad. It is said that slaves reaching Westfield were safe from pursuers due to the diligence of the ‘conductors’ and their families to keep the slaves safe. Famous escaped slave, speaker, and writer Frederick Douglass also spent time in Westfield. Having been severely beaten in Pendleton, Douglass was moved to Westfield to take shelter and recover. Many activities and landmarks in Westfield serve as a reminder of the founding fathers and their work to assist runaway slaves. The annual Underground Railroad 5K run is held each March through the streets of historic Westfield. Each September “Voices Through the Past” takes visitors on a walking tour of the path of the Underground Railroad, past some of the homes that served as ‘depots’. The tour meanders through Asa

founded the town. Freedom Trail Park at 181st and Hoover Street are so named because Westfield was responsible for helping more slaves get to freedom than any other town in this part of the country. Westfield became a city in 2008. Many miles and acres of farmland have given way to strip malls, subdivisions, and business districts. The city’s first and current Mayor Andy Cook, together with various committees and departments, has worked hard over the past six years to grow the industry and economy. And yet it is still important to both officials and local citizens for the city to maintain its small town feel. Monthly “Party on the Patio” gatherings bring residents together to share local food and beverages, listen to music, and hear from representatives on current interests or issues

in the community. A farmer’s market takes place every Friday evening at the Ameriana Bank on Ind. 32. The Grand Junction Derby takes place in the streets of downtown in October. This year marks its sixth annual celebration and will feature guest emcee racing champion, Derek Daly. During the holiday season, the city hosts “Westfield in Lights” which features a live nativity, tree lighting led by the mayor, open houses to the downtown businesses, and a Girl Scout gingerbread house competition. Many of the businesses in Westfield have been around for 20 years or more. Most have strong family ties. Westfield Steel began in 1977 with three partners, but the Prine family, who was one of the earliest settlers, continues to make the business successful today. Two of the oldest businesses in Westfield are Wheeler’s Westfield Airport and the Acorn Farm General Store. Wheeler’s Airport, set up by Leslie Wheeler when he returned to Westfield after his stint as an Army Air Corps pilot, was originally just an airstrip built after Wheeler plowed under a few acres of the family farm. Over the years, more hangers have been built to house airplanes on the land just north of Ind. 32, and flight lessons are now offered. The airport continues to be run by the Wheeler family.

The Acorn Farm General Store on Oak Road has an even longer, unique history. The land where the store now stands used to be a camp for Indianapolis children. The camp was started in 1935 and ran until 1977. It gave 15,000 kids each summer a chance to experience living in a rural area, swimming in Cool Creek, cooking outside, and enjoying nature. The sale of antiques was started in 1961 by its owners, Dee and Herb Sweet. When they retired in 1995, their daughter Jill bought the farm with her husband Mic Mead, and launched the store. Westfield Pharmacy and Union Street Flowers on South Union in downtown Westfield are linked by more than the walkway connecting them. Becky and Dave Weiss own both businesses. Dave, from Bremen, Indiana, appreciated the small town independent pharmacies. Upon hearing the Bremen Pharmacy was bought out by a chain, he decided to move to Westfield after graduating from Butler University. He mentored under the previous owner/ pharmacist and bought it in 1981. He and his wife Becky, who grew up in Westfield, soon opened the flower and gift shop next door. Their daughter, Kristen, now works alongside her mom at the shop. She is pleased by the success of both businesses. “I like being able to say my family owns the only independent pharmacy in Hamilton County. It makes me proud.”

Kristen, who graduated in 2008 from Westfield High School and Purdue in 2012 returned to Westfield because she likes the small town feel. She does take note of the big changes taking place in and around the city. “Growth has been very positive. It brings more business – a different crowd.” Kristen went on to say that she and her family are considering changes or additions they may make as they face a different clientele. One of these differences could mean the addition of Sunday hours. “Plans for streets should result in more foot traffic, which is good for us,” Kristen said. With so many visitors in the area for weekend tournaments at Grand Park, it might be in the shop’s best interest to open on Sunday. Education has been an important aspect of life in Westfield from the beginning. The founding fathers built Union High Academy which opened for classes in 1861. The high school had a Christian background, and it has remained that way as it emerged into Union Bible College in 1989. The college continues to operate, offering degrees in ministry and music. This is a unique and honorable addition to this as-yet small community. Athletics also play a significant role in Westfield, as does the sense of community and family. The aforementioned parks contribute to these values, providing play and picnic areas, and trails to walk. The city has worked

hard to grow the miles of trails developed for recreation and fitness. Among these are the Midland Trace Trail, the Monon Trail, the Anna Kendall Trail, and the Freedom Trail. The focus on trails will continue as all are connected and lengthened. For example, the Monon will eventually stretch all the way from 146th street to 216th with a foot bridge spanning across State Road 32. The trails are not the only pathways being worked on. Construction continues at multiple intersections on U.S. 31 and State Road 32. Roundabouts are being added along Carey Road and 191st street. When the dust settles, when all of the projects are complete, it will be a completely different scene that will have evolved into the City of Westfield. Although there are still some corn fields and farmland around, it is a sure bet that this once small town will emerge as a bustling city. To quote Dorothy, we are definitely not in Kansas anymore!

Old Or New

Local restaurants adjust and stay true to community Food and family are big parts of the community of Westfield. That’s why the restaurants in this part of Hamilton County focus on the quality of both. Jan’s Village Pizza and White House Donuts have been serving customers for years. As the city grows, new restaurants with the same values are popping up, too, including The Local and Grand Junction Brewing Company. Walking into Jan’s Village Pizza in historic downtown Westfield, I heard a customer finishing a late lunch comment to the server, “Thank you so much … that is the best pizza I’ve had in a long time.” This is music to the ears of owners Janice and Steve Miller. The Westfield location, opened in 1997, was an expansion of the business that started out in Sheridan. Jan’s is one of the eating establishments that has been a cornerstone for Westfield residents over

the years. With their motto being “because taste matters,” Jan’s uses fresh ingredients whenever possible rather than canned or frozen alternatives. In addition, they make their own dough and sauce. Jan’s is proud to boast that they use the finest products and have the finest staff. Each year Jan’s participates in an annual pizza bake off in Sheridan. In 2013 they not only won the bake off in Sheridan, but went on to win Pizza Today Magazine’s Bake Off with their Mediterranean pizza developed by employee Michelle Thomas. The Union Street restaurant offers a Monday buffet and delivery service, and has recently opened a party and meeting room that holds 48. The pizzeria offers a variety of pizzas including a ‘build your own.’ Some of their signature dishes include a pizza developed by each of the owners – ‘Jan’s Signature Pizza’ and ‘Steve’s Surprise.’ Others include the ‘Mexican Meltdown’ and

‘Pig in the Garden.’ They also offer sandwiches, salads, and wings.

ship with farmers in the area, thus strengthening ties to that part of the community.

The fact that the building is reportedly haunted doesn’t seem to keep customers away. The server I spoke with stated that business was booming, and that with the recent traffic of ballplayers and their families from Grand Park coming through, that he usually sees customers well after closing time.

The restaurant uses organic ingredients whenever possible and develops them into freshly made foods. There is a designated menu, but there are always a variety of options, as well. These specials are posted along with the farms from which the local ingredients were gathered.

Right next door to Jan’s is the new Grand Junction Brewing Company. Opened in the spring of 2014, the bar and restaurant is managed by Molly Nagy. The brewery’s name and logo design were developed based on Westfield’s history. The locomotive engine blazing over the brewery’s name brings to mind that both the Monon and Midland Railroads used to run through Westfield; the city was also a main ‘depot’ for slaves to stop when making their way along the Underground Railroad.

Unique foods such as goat and rabbit are offered along with salads, sandwiches, and burgers. Burgers feature names like the ‘Plain Jane,’ which is a burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, and house sauce. Or you might get the ‘Prom Date,’ – Jane dressed up with your choice of cheese. Fun drinks like the ‘Italian Mule’ and the ‘Blind Date’ are also possibilities.

Grand Junction offers appetizers and sandwiches. They also offer a dessert that pays tribute to Keltie’s, a fondly remembered restaurant and catering business that used to occupy the space where Grand Junction is currently located. The establishment, opened by two men who share a love of brewing, has already reached out to the community. Prior to their grand opening, the owners allowed local high school students to use their building to host a photography show. Many of the students’ pictures remain hanging in the dining area. Community is also the focus for the owners of The Local, a farm-to-table restaurant located at 146th and Gray Road. Owners Derek Means and Craig Baker get their ingredients and produce from local farms. This is not just to assure the freshest food, as they can visit the farms themselves, but also to develop a relation-

The focus on families can definitely be seen at White House Donuts where even the owners and workers are family. James Hicks, who opened the business in 1987, makes donuts in the overnight hours and works Saturdays, while dad Paul assists customers the other days of the week. Closed on Sundays and only accepting cash, the shop is open from five until 11 each day- or until the donuts run out- which is what happens most days. “If there are ever any donuts left, they are donated to charitable organizations – this doesn’t happen very often,” said Paul Hicks. Paul continued to explain the loyalty they have witnessed with their customer base. “We take off a week at the Fourth of July, a week at Thanksgiving, and a week at Christmas. We don’t miss a beat – when we come back our customers are right back, too!” This is likely due to the fact that the donuts are made from scratch, fresh, each day. White House

Food and family are a big part of the community of Westfield. offers yeast and cake donuts, cinnamon rolls, and apple fritters, among other treats. I visited the bakery at 9 a.m. on a Friday and the donuts were almost gone. Those coming after me, however, were willing to take whatever was left, as long as they got one. The popularity of White House donuts extends beyond the product, however. Paul explained that they are a family-friendly place. They keep a box of toys in the back for any kids who need to be entertained. Anyone wanting to see how the donuts are made are encouraged to visit and have a look for themselves. The dining area is a laid back place where people share tables and discuss the pressing problems of the world- like who does quality roofing and which hotel chain will likely move to the corner of U.S. 31 and Ind. 32. A Hotel 6, perhaps, is what

the four men gathered on this particular Friday are guessing. They joke that they’ll “leave the light on” for all the athletes coming from the new Grand Park. These four men have gathered at White House for years. Wayne Sifers drives from Greenwood to meet and eat with the guys. Shocked that he would drive that far for a donut, I questioned, “Greenwood?” He answered that he has been making the drive for seventeen years, and it’s well worth it. Off to the side is a bulletin board covered with about 100 business cards offering contacts for services from handy men to cupcakes. Paul didn’t hesitate to help me find one directing me to a good plumber while I was there. By the next day, my leaky faucet was a thing of the past.
