Letter from the Editor

Construction is the road du jour these days in Carmel, which makes it tricky to get around. I drove my hyperverbal eight year old granddaughter to ballet last week and wasn’t sure how to make it across Meridian. “There’s a new bridge up here, no problem,” she told me. Really – when did that happen? As I headed right, I saw the bridge over my left shoulder too late to make an adjustment. Once you’re in one of those circles, especially during rush hour, no way can you squeeze back into the correct lane. Fortunately a nice policeman let me make a U-turn. Sadly we were still late, not good when escorting a young lady in a tutu on a mission.

At least you can count on Carmel to reliably deliver top notch entertainment. In this issue we feature an interview with Catherine Dixon, Director of Development at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, that explores Civic’s 100 years as one of the nation’s longest continuously operating community theatres in the country. Their centennial celebration in 2015 will highlight special events throughout the season along with outstanding performances and extensive education and outreach programs. Read all about Civic in “Celebrating 100 Years” and visit civictheatre.org for more information. And don’t miss the article on ‘super workouts, super quick’ that profiles programs lasting only 30 minutes a session (!) at five different facilities, perfect for those of us short on time and long on excuses. The new you will want a chic wardrobe to show off your shape, so visit Snazzi Boutique for fun, affordable items in a hip-happenin’ shop. Melissa Cawi is Snazzi’s owner and shares her fashion expertise in “Cool Trends in Winter Wear.” There’s lots more inside but you can also flip through our digital magazine at www.CarmelCityMagazine.com and follow our @CarmelCityMag Twitter feed as well as visit www.facebook.com/CarmelCityMagazine. With the new year just around the corner, we wish everyone safe travels on the road ahead. Jackie Holloway, Editor JHolloway@CarmelCityMagazine.com

We met in the country. The largthe lobby between the est of over 70 community theatres Tarkington and the Studio Theater in Indiana, it is also in the top ten of

that fronts Center Green across from The Palladium. Catherine started with a little background. “The Center for the Performing Arts is our fifth home in 100 years. Most recently we moved from Showalter on the grounds of the IMA to an interim space at Marian College (now Marian University) in 2004. We made the decision to become the principal resident theatre in the Tarkington at the Center in 2009 and opened here for our 2011-2012 season. Our performances, education programs and administration all take place in this building.” Lots of new vocabulary words (for me anyway) followed as we entered the auditorium. “The Tarkington has 500 seats with a proscenium stage, simply defined as a stage with a frame that separates the audience from the performers and allows space to hide scenery and equipment such as lighting. Additional features include the fly tower, which allows for more intricate set designs and theatrical effects, and the orchestra pit to house the musicians that accompany every Civic musical. These tools make it possible to host Mainstage productions as varied as large-scale musicals, comedies and intimate dramas. In contrast, the Palladium is called a ‘concert hall’ since its stage is completely open to enhance acoustics.” From the auditorium we walked back to one of the dressing rooms. Along two walls, chairs faced long mirrors with spotlights above, much

like what is depicted in movies. “The Tarkington has separate areas for men and women that accommodate up to 20 people. Cast members with prominent roles have private rooms for make-up and wardrobe changes. Showers are available as well.” It was easy to imagine the controlled chaos that reigns during a production. Our next stop was the ‘War Room’ upstairs. Here we found models for each scene built to scale for upcoming shows. They looked like pretty dollhouses lined up and ready for play. According to Catherine, “Our resident scenographer, Ryan Koharchik, builds these miniature scale models for each scene so that every aspect of stage design is imagined before production. Elevations and blueprints are drawn to ensure that all scenery is constructed to precise specifications. Costumes are also created onsite under the direction of resident costume designer Adrienne Conces; we have a fulltime production staff of eight who bring our stage to life. Prior to an opening, we allow two weeks for load-in and technical work followed by three to four weeks for the show. Our performers usually have day jobs so rehearsals are held during the evening.” All of this work behind the curtain leads to the outstanding performances we enjoy each season. But what about education and outreach programs at the Civic? “Our mission is to ‘foster a love of theatre through imagination, education

and participation,” Catherine explained. “We offer numerous classes to students as young as 18 months all the way up through teens and adults. There are also opportunities to perform. Each summer, for instance, Jr. Civic produces a fullystaged musical for kids and by kids with children from 6 to 14, and the Young Adult Program provides performance opportunities for high school students. If you visit our website at CivicTheatre.org you can read about the many programs which are available for every age and ability.” Catherine continued with some of her favorite examples of community outreach. “School matinees enable us to reach students across the state that might not otherwise have access to live theatre. For those children with autism, we hosted a ‘sensory friendly’ performance of The Cat in the Hat last season and plan to increase to two adjusted performances in 2015. Lights are up in the auditorium and we provide a safe area for time-out if needed. Experts are positioned in the audience and demonstrations teach that the play is make-believe. We’re the first company in Indiana to do this in conjunction with VSA Arts of Indiana, the state organization on arts and disability.” Since Civic is a non-profit organization, Catherine spends much of her time raising funds. 50% of the operating budget is earned through ticket sales, class tuitions and rentals of scenery and costumes; the rest is raised through the support of individuals, corporations and foundations.

Our mission is to

To celebrate its milestone centennial, Civic plans several special events throughout the season. There will be an exhibit in the lobby telling the story of its last 100 years and looking ahead to the next century; opportunities to explore the working areas of the Tarkington during SPAMALOT; and events to celebrate the organization’s birthday. And of course there will be the inspired performances that promise to entertain audiences for years to come. Your family will love Civic’s next production, The Wizard of Oz, on stage December 12 - January 3 in the Tarkington. Moon Over Buffalo/Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. Ken Ludwig’s uproarious Moon Over Buffalo follows in the same madcap comedy tradition of Lend me a Tenor. The play centers on George and Charlotte Hay, has-been actors who are on the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue. Just as they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, resulting in non-stop hilarity. The 39 Steps/Actors Theatre of Indiana. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. Seeking a frivolous night out at the theatre, Richard Hannay is lured into a world of intrigue by a mysterious woman claiming to be a spy. When she winds up dead in his flat, he flees London with the police hot on his trail. This is a classic portrayal of one man’s flight from wrong accusation through a series of misadventures and old fashioned romance. THE 39 STEPS features a cast of four actors who, against all odds, breathlessly and hilariously attempt to reenact all of the characters, locations and famous scenes in Hitchcock’s 1935 film thriller with just a few props and a lot of theatrical ingenuity and split second quick changes. Cool Trends in

Versatility is a key to your modern lifestyle. When the temperature drops, it’s all about layering. Many women are afraid to layer their clothes for fear of looking bigger than they actually are. While logic would lead one to believe that this claim is true, if you’ve mastered the art of layering this couldn’t be further from the truth. A perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette.

Follow these tips to layer like a pro: • Keep the under-layers more fitted to keep your shape looking slim. • If you’re concerned about your waistline, try to top off your look with something belted. • Length and proportion are key when layering. • Play with texture. It’s best to incorporate a mix of materials when styling a layered look. If you use all of the same fabrics, you’re look will come off as heavy and dowdy (which can add the appearance of unwanted weight). (www.laurenconrad.com)

Winter Wear

Melissa Cawi, Owner, Snazzi Boutique

Layering is the perfect strategy

Outerwear is taking center stage.

for transitioning into seasons. You can mix that favorite light colored blouse with a knit vest or wear it over a tank top and under a jacket. Lightweight skirts can be worn with leggings and boots. You will notice everything from sleeveless to long sleeved shirts and open-toed shoes with tights to over-the-knee boots. Just remember to check proportion before heading out the door!

Throw an oversize wrapcoat over a multitude of layers, or go the streamlined route and team it with slim-cut trousers and a thin turtleneck. If the robe coat or wooly shearling isn’t for you, test drive a more refined piece like the cape. Wear it over a dress to add polish to your evening look, or with jeans, a chunky knit, and riding boots for a chic weekend ensemble. One of our favorite designers, Angels Never Die, experiments with fabrics

and combinations with greater depth and structure. Their styles are fluid and constructed, delicate and strong. For fall, the scale reads modern and chic, but with a relaxed mood.

Sweaters also make a statement this season, so be sure yours stay on message. There are differences between your favorite snuggly cashmere and a sweater you can wear to work, to a meeting, and out to dinner. Look for one in a deep color, like emerald or burgundy. Or one with a giant collar. Or one with tons of texture. (Just not all three, please.) Pull your hair up and wear pants that are skinny, dark, and no threat to the sweater. By now, we should all have a pair of skinny pants in our wardrobe. This year, the trend is to have glam denim, or a glazed pair of jeans. These fashion pieces add a bit of color and style to update your repertoire and pair well with everything from a plaid blouse to a swanky holiday jacket.

46

However, those are not the only pants that have been on the runway. Draped trousers are also emblematic of the entire season—fluid, versatile, and user-friendly. Look for pleated wool pants that are cut generously through the legs. Wear them with a narrow, tucked-in top to accentuate the waist. Step into

heels and make sure the hem almost grazes the floor. You should see the tips of the shoes, not the heels.

Fabulous colors make an otherwise ordinary outfit totally vibrant. Citrusy fall shades like marigold, magenta and olive, make an awesome color combo. Fall colors tend to be rich and dynamic. And this season in no exception! We are seeing a great deal of aubergine, French for eggplant. This deep, dark purple has a slight brown hue. It warms against the skin casting radiant light onto any complexion. Combine it with shiny silver or inky black for a dramatic effect or add a pop of aubergine to white, soft grey or light neutrals to keep it modern, sleek and simple. Don’t be afraid of bright colors. Go for bold trousers, and keep the shoes fun too, but play it cool when it comes to your top.

Black is intriguing, mysterious and radiates confidence. Black implies self-control, independence and a strong will. Black is sophisticated and elegant. Layers of black allow you to play with texture. A great base layer can be accessorized with rich fall colors, neutrals and metallics. Black is the most popular fashion color and continues to be an important staple in every woman’s closet. It’s the ultimate fashion color that will never go out of style.

When black and white feel overdone, try the hue that’s a happy medium of both. We saw gray styled from head to toe on the runway, but for everyday wear, we like to add a jolt of cheeriness to the subdued shade with rich violets, vibrant greens, and bright yellows. This chameleon-like color can mix it up with black and white for a clean modern look, or can be pared back with earthy neutrals and deep autumn tones for year-round appeal. Neutrals like gray are seasonless; it should be a classic color in every woman’s wardrobe — and is as important as black or white. A light neutral makes a great base layer and turns an ordinary jacket into a statement piece.

The greatest part about trends this season is they are as unique as you are! Don’t be afraid to mix it up. Special details make a for a standout look. Some of the best outfits are all about tiny details. Chunky knits, pin-tucking or contrast stitching can make your look seem extra special.

Green Machines

The Verdict is in: Americans are loving fuel-efficient cars more than ever before

xperts say there is a growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, especially compact cars, subcompact cars, and hybrids. Even though gas prices have generally stabilized (yet, still too high!), consumer car shoppers seem to be ready to commit to what were once seen as wild ideas — electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids.

operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. The Tom Wood organization has made a point in the latest round of construction of new dealerships to be more environmentally conscience in the long term operation of the new stores. What motivates Subaru to go the extra mile to take the environment so seriously? Isn’t business in America all about profit and the bottom line? Subaru, corporately, has taken the environment seriously for over 10 years. The manufacturing plant in Lafayette, Indiana has won various designations for their green efforts, most specifically their zero landfill efforts. Their efforts have created an environmental responsibility element to the Subaru brand, which is a special element that separates Subaru from other automotive brands, plus in the end, it’s the right thing to do. Tell us about the hottest features in today’s automobiles that customers want in order to reduce their own footprint on the environment. Is it all about hybrids and electric cars or can they be conventional vehicles that have been modified?

55

Currently, Subaru offers Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) available throughout the lineup, which is the most requested feature to reduce footprint on the environment. In the future—two to three years away, Subaru will produce a plug-in hybrid, but currently they are working toward better energy efficiencies with the vehicles currently available. Hybrids and electric vehicle sales will increase over time, and within that time period, Subaru will produce a quality vehicle to compete. If you could point to one specific model of Subaru as the most “green” vehicle available, which would it be ... and why? The XV Crosstrek Hybrid is currently the most green vehicle in the Subaru lineup. Along with being a quality hybrid, it is the most fuel efficient small crossover in America. Finally, can you address the cost of being “green” ... the general feeling is that these vehicles are going to be more expensive. Is that always the case? And as we continue to advance in technology, will it always be the case? As with LED lighting, yes, the initial costs are more expensive. But in long term, the savings, efficiencies, and effects on the environmental footprint, outweigh the initial cost. Also, as mentioned earlier, it’s the right thing to do. What is the cost factor associated with doing the right thing? Written by Dan McFeely

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

Super Workouts, Super Quick…Your Path to Physical Fitness

Fitbody Bootcamp Carmel At Fitbody Bootcamp we offer a unique workout that enables people of all fitness levels to participate. The formula for success is H.I.I.T or high intensity interval training, reinforced with a 21 day meal template. This training format has become one of the most popular ways to burn fat, improve endurance and build strength. Fitbody Bootcamp (FBBC) incorporates cardio vascular and strength training in circuit formats. The focus of our workouts is to push every individual to perform at peak within their physical limitations. Modifications and progressions are overseen by a trainer so that each client gets the greatest calorie burn potential in 30 minutes. It’s fast and extremely effective! What separates FBBC from any other gym, you might ask? Workout environment, efficiency and results! We provide the opportunity for members to challenge themselves and test their limits with over 51 classes per week to choose from. Our environment allows everyone to drop their mom/dad/ business ‘hat’ off at the door, turn up the music and get into their workout. FBBC is an inclusive workout facility with a nutritionist, chef and two personal trainers on staff. We take pride in educating our members on ways to balance work and play. Clients also learn how to manage schedules, set goals and eat a healthy diet. As fitness professionals, it never gets old to see our members improve and reach their fitness goals. We take pleasure in designing weekly workouts that keep everyone mentally and physically engaged in their quest to get into shape. Monthly body measurements keep track of each client’s progress so that they stay motivated and on track. FBBC is the place to go for both beginners and advanced fitness fanatics. In 30 minutes you will burn 300 – 375 calories and be well on your way to the new you! Monon Community Center You’ve probably heard the term H.I.T. training (High Intensity Training), Tabata, Interval or Circuit training. So, what’s the buzz all about? It’s about producing the most rapid and dramatic changes to your body in shorter workout sessions. Studies have shown that short periods of high intensity exercise followed by short periods of rest, burns more calories and more body fat than maintaining a steady pace. At the Monon Community Center, we offer many ways to accomplish this. We offer Tabata classes which feature 20 second work and 10 second rest intervals. This exercise format will exhaust most muscle groups in about 30 minutes. We offer Zumba – another interval-style format which infuses quick tempos to increase your heart rate followed by medium tempos for your “rest” phase. A runner or walker can use our indoor 200m track and run 20 to 30 second sprints followed by 10 second recovery jogs/ walks. Repeating this for 15 minutes will boost your cardiovascular endurance and leave your metabolism racing for hours after the workout. This same concept can be applied to lap swimming in our indoor pool, riding a spin bike, using a treadmill or an elliptical trainer. In fact, many of the cardio machines have an “interval” program setting which makes the workout easy for the user. Our personal trainers can design a 30 minute workout routine to suit your individual needs. “When designing your routine, keep in mind three components,” says Monon Community Center Personal Trainer, Jenny LeBlanc. “Cardio, strength and core. The exercises can be simple, using just a couple of pieces of equipment. For example, step on and off of a Bosu ball, followed by lateral lifts with dumbbells and a weighted medicine ball swing for core.” If you like the free weight area of our Fitness Center, try alternating exercises in a timed format, i.e., jumping Jacks for 1 minute, followed by 1 minute of push-ups. Repeat up to four or five sets until the muscle group is exhausted. Next, move on to reverse lunges, alternating right and left legs, while the arms perform Hammer curls (palms in) for 1 minute followed by Torso Chops using a medicine ball. Repeat up to four or five sets. Finally, perform Plank Taps alternating with Hip Lifts & Arm Flyes. Remember to stretch at the end of your workout. For a visual representation of these exercises, visit carmelclayparks.com/super-quick-workouts. Whatever interval program you choose, with a commitment of 3-5 workouts a week, you are sure to experience dramatic strength and muscle tone results before long. Stop by any desk to get your Escape Pass today or go to carmelclayparks.com for more information on how we can help. 9Round 30 Min Kickbox Fitness 9Round Kickbox and Fitness is ahead of the times! Just ask any member and they’ll be quick to tell you about its workout benefits. Owners Katie and Matt Meiser have tackled every problem and excuse in the fitness industry, which Matt likes to call the ‘four walls of fitness.’ o The first wall is that most people feel they have no time to work out. To kick this objection down, they

have 30 minute sessions that are fun and fast paced. o The second wall 9Round obliterates is the boredom that comes with doing the same routine every

visit. Workouts are changed daily so that no individual knows what to expect. o The third wall Katie and Matt address is the discomfort people feel when they don’t know what to do.

They beat this by having a certified trainer on the floor at all times at no additional cost to members. o The last of the four walls is many gyms have class times, which creates a problem for those with tight

schedules and makes it easy for them to skip out altogether. 9Round changes the industry by having no class times. A class starts every three minutes, which means you can get in and get out in less than 35 minutes. The husband and wife duo are also trainers at 9Round. “We care about each and every member that walks into our gym. Members are not just faces; we make a special effort to know their names and priorities. Our fast, efficient sessions give clients a fitness routine that if followed, promises a long healthy life. Results are amazing and fun to enjoy with others on the same journey.” Want to get into the best shape you’ve ever known? 9Round makes it fun and easy with 30 minute classes, no class times, trainers available free of charge and workouts that change every day. It’s a winning formula for the rest of your life. Visit www.9round.com/carmelin Written by Matt Meiser, Owner 9Round 30 Min Kickbox Fitness 74

FitNow Boot Camp Exercise. Unfortunately, most of us don’t get nearly enough of it on a regular basis. As an ACE certified personal trainer, the excuse I hear most often from people is, “I just don’t have enough time to exercise.” My response is always, “Do you really have enough time to be sick?” Being overweight or obese leads to health complications that can interfere with busy lives. Exercise does not have to be time-consuming. Fitness industry experts continuously conduct research in an effort to develop exercise training methods that provide better results in the least amount of time. One of these methods is called “High Intensity Interval Training”, or HIIT. HIIT is a system of organizing cardiorespiratory training which calls for repeated bouts of short duration, high-intensity exercise intervals intermingled with periods of lower intensity intervals of active recovery. On a 1-10 scale of perceived exertion, high intensity can be considered anything over an effort level of 7. A benefit of HIIT is that the body continues to burn calories for several hours post-workout as it returns to a “normal” state. Some popular at-home DVD exercise programs advertised on television infomercials use HIIT training principles. However, most have a high injury rate and a low adherence rate. There are no “live” personal trainers to monitor and correct bad form, thus leading to risk of knee, back and shoulder injuries. These programs also have a failure rate of greater than 90-percent. At FitNow Boot Camp, we provide a very safe and motivating group HIIT exercise program for people of any age and fitness level – as long as they are medically cleared to engage in an exercise program. Our “work ‘til you can’t, rest ‘til you can” philosophy allows our boot campers to safely work at their own pace and fitness level and ease back into an exercise regimen. Our certified instructors can also offer modifications for people with physical limitations or nagging injuries. After nearly four years in business serving Carmel and the surrounding area, we’ve discovered a formula that allows everyone from athletes and business professionals to youth and stay-at-home parents to work side-by-side to reach their fitness goals. Since FitNow is locally owned and operated, we are able to serve our clients with personal attention and competitive pricing. The Exercise Coach At the Exercise Coach, our specialty is helping busy people look, feel and function better. Our approach is built around the scientifically-backed and proven fact that “muscle quality” is far more important than “movement quantity.” For all the benefits of exercise - weight loss, gaining back lost strength, bone density, improvement in metabolism, blood-sugar, higher energy level, toning, etc – developing and maintaining healthy muscle is the most important aspect in order to achieve these goals. And with the protocols and technologies we use at The Exercise Coach, this can all be achieved in just two, twenty-minute workouts per week! The reason this is possible is that the bio-sensitive technologies we implement can actually measure each person’s unique metabolic and strength make-up, and then prescribe a workout that’s just right for each individual. It’s not too little or too high intensity, but Right Intensity Training, as we call it. That’s what allows the workouts to be so effective and efficient to fit into your schedule with such a minimal time requirement! Our program adapts to you and your fitness level, and is extremely safe for everyone. The training studio is also very clean and private, allowing us to deliver highly-effective, coach-guided sessions either one-on-one or in partner format. All of these things make us perfect for anyone who is too busy for exercise, doesn’t like the gym scene, is afraid of getting hurt, or just plain hates exercise! The Exercise Coach moved to Carmel in February 2014, and we have helped many busy individuals of all ages achieve the goals most important to them. Our small staff is client-focused and driven by the unique needs of each individual. Our nutrition plan, combined with our unprecedented exercise experience, will enable you to feel and see results quickly, and empower you with the strength and wellness to live your life fully! Sessions feature personal guidance from an expert coach, high-tech strength and interval training that adapts to any fitness level, instantaneous visual computer feedback, data tracking and reporting that enables us to quantify your progress, and a very clean and private environment. ONE DAY CROWNS

Carmel Dental Care utilizes the most current CAD/CAM technology to offer convenient, same-day crowns to our patients. The PLANMECA E4D system allows: NO more messy impressions. NO temporary crowns.

NO need for second appointment.

The tooth is prepared by the dentist, and a digital scan is taken of the tooth surfaces. The crown is then designed chair-side on a computer, and is sent digitally to the in-office milling machine for fabrication. The crown will then be custom-glazed by the dentist, tried-in and cemented; all in one easy appointment.

We know that convenience and comfort are of the utmost importance during dental visits, and we take pride in being able to offer both to our patients.

divorce Reaching An Agreement On Child Custody There are two aspects to child custody. The first is legal. Legal custody refers to the ability to have input on medical, educational, and religious issues pertaining to a child’s upbringing. Joint legal custody is appropriate in most cases unless there is a significant breakdown in communication between the parties. Generally, as long as the parents are able to communicate and cooperate with one another on decisions involving the child(ren) without a high level of conflict, joint legal custody will be ordered and the parents are required to consult one another before making any of these “major decisions.” The second aspect of custody is physical custody, which is much more often the subject of dispute. Simply stated, physical custody refers to where the children spend their time. As an initial matter, parents may create a unique schedule which satisfies the needs of their children and each other. Often, however, developing a parenting time schedule can be very challenging. When parties are unable to agree, the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines provide a parenting time schedule that gradually increases as the children age,

provides for a division of holidays, and time with the children should one parent live a significant distance from the children’s primary residence. It should be noted, though, that the Guidelines represent a minimum amount of reasonable parenting time to be afforded to the non-custodial parent. Many Indiana Courts commonly award an involved, non-custodial parent parenting time in excess of the schedule provided in the Guidelines. People often feel the need to “have their day in court,” believing that if the judge hears “their side of the story” the custody order will be in their favor. However, in evaluating whether to ask a judge to make a ruling on custody and parenting time, the parties would be well advised to keep in mind that time in court is limited, and it is difficult to present all of the information believed to be important. A judge often only has fifteen-thirty (15-30) minutes to hear evidence. This is not to say that such conflicts which arise should not be litigated. However, once you proceed to court, the final decision is out of your hands. 91

If parties are unable to reach an agreement, Indiana Courts will focus on the “best interest of the children” and in doing so will consider a number of factors in determining an appropriate custodial and parenting time arrangement. These factors include, but are not limited to, which parent has served as the primary caregiver; the child’s age and sex; the wishes of the child and the parties; the child’s relationship with each parent, siblings, and others; the child’s adjustment to their home, school, and community; and the mental and physical health of all involved. There are a number of benefits to reaching an out-of-court agreement, including but not limited to, allowance for non-traditional work schedules and flexibility for holidays. When parties are able to communicate and cooperate on these matters, it is a win-win for all involved. HOW FIT IS YOUR ESTATE PLAN?

by Anne Hensley Poindexter, Managing Partner CAMPBELL KYLE PROFFITT LLP Before or after the holidays, many of us re-energize and commit (or re-commit) to a fitness routine. Taking care of your physical health is very important. However, it is also important to periodically review the “fitness” of existing estate plans. The majority of estate plans include a Will, Power of Attorney, Health Care Representative Designation, Living Will, and non-probate transfers including trusts, as well as other beneficiary designations. Some of the most important decisions to be made in a Will are the selection of beneficiaries, guardians and a Personal Representative. From time to time, you should consider whether your prior selections remain appropriate. Given your life’s current circumstances, do you wish to protect a beneficiary’s interest by placing it in a trust? As your children age is it appropriate to reconsider the guardian nomination? As relationships and institutions change, is it appropriate to name a new Personal Representative? These same or similar questions apply to non-probate transfers, including

trusts and beneficiary designations. You may have long ago designated beneficiaries on policies of life insurance, annuities, etc. From time to time as life changes, these designations should be reviewed. Transfer on Death or Pay on Death designations for financial and bank accounts should also be periodically reviewed. Sometimes individuals incorrectly decide that a more recent Will covers everything and they fail to update various beneficiary designations. Imagine the shock of a loving, surviving spouse with small children who finds out life insurance still has a beneficiary designation naming a former spouse or in-laws who do not like the surviving spouse. Don’t think that these are crazy scenarios – they happen, and I have seen them tragically play out time and time again. As you consider the extra pounds that tend to accumulate during the holidays or commit to a new fitness routine, take the time to examine the fitness of your current estate plan. If you do not have a plan, get started now! 95

BUILDING in Carmel:

Interview with John McKenzie

here are countless people who dream of building a custom home on a lot of their choosing. Since a project like this constitutes a big investment in time and money, it’s not something that many have experienced. Questions about where to purchase property, which builder to select and what the process entails can stymie even the most enthusiastic individuals. To help demystify custom construction, John McKenzie of McKenzie Collection agreed to sit down and discuss its ins and outs.

Because Carmel has been such a hot spot for so many years, one has to wonder if land is still available. According to John, “We haven’t hit saturation yet. Ground breaking on a huge piece of property will start late this year on Jackson’s Grant at the corner of 116th and Springmill Road. About 450 homes will be built by five different companies that include McKenzie Collection, Wedgewood, Old Town Builders, Weekly and Drees. It’s a beautiful stretch of land with great topography naturally drained by Williams Creek. In the future it will access the Monon Greenway via an EastWest trail. As large tracts such as this are developed, I think we’ll see more ‘boutique’ or ‘pocket’ neighborhoods going up.” Over the last 25 years, John has walked many clients through the custom

102

process. He feels that most begin by picking an area. “People tend to choose a location based on work, schools and social criteria such as friends and family. From there they gravitate towards a neighborhood appropriate for their lifestyle. Do they want kids and swing sets close by? What about a large yard as opposed to a zero-lot line? Is access to common areas important? Resale

value is a factor too. Once these questions are addressed, it’s easy to target their selection.” After a community has been chosen and the lot has been staked, the next step is to design a home that matches the buyer’s vision. At this point, an open line of communication with the builder is paramount. “Every client has priorities when it comes to building and one of the most important is the timeline. Residences may have to be sold or

work/school calendars addressed. At McKenzie we schedule 30 days to develop the parameters, such as price, interior and exterior features and materials. It takes another 30 days to obtain building permits and draw architectural blueprints. We allow five months for the building process itself, perhaps more for a finished basement. That adds up to seven or eight months from start to finish.” John notes that budgeting is also a significant issue for everyone. “I 103

www.CarmelCityGuide.com

make sure the prices we quote accurately reflect a client’s expectations. Too often builders establish a home’s cost by relying on ‘allowances’; they can be tricky. For instance, you’ve picked a floor plan and agreed upon a purchase price. Then you find the kitchen cabinets aren’t what you wanted, which leads to an upgrade. Presto! There goes your budget. It’s extremely important that allowances take into account tastes and specifications. In addition, electrical plans should be adequate since it’s easy to omit details like recessed lighting. And don’t forget the exterior. Landscaping and outdoor features such as patios add tremendous appeal. With enough experience, shop-able inventory and a top notch staff of designers, builders should be able to avoid unpleasant surprises on the bottom line.”

6

About 80% of McKenzie’s construction is the traditional main-floor empty nester home. “Some of the advantages in these communities are easy to appreciate. Yards are smaller and even those who like to work outside don’t miss the maintenance. Since less space is

used per house, more is left for common areas such as parks, nature preserves and lakes. Value is also added because of consistent care. Everyone’s lawns are usually mowed at the same time. When you enter a neighborhood like this, it looks and feels good.” That’s just the way it should feel when you move into the home you’ve designed and built yourself – good.

Letter from the Publisher

The ‘new’ city of Westfield is quickly taking hold. Grand Park, Grand Junction, new hotels and restaurants, the indoor sports complex and much more…there’s no limit to its expansion. Westfield City Magazine now has over 100 distribution locations in the city alone and, in addition, you’ll find the entire magazine inside Carmel City Magazine. That means Carmel residents are becoming more aware of the dramatic changes to their ‘sister’ city up north. And need I mention that there is a little road construction going on? We can all look forward to the time when commutes will be faster and more convenient…some day in a not-too-distant future.

Great Chefs

Cory Rasco

Interview by Annessa Chumbley, RD

I

f you want a renegade chef with a competitive edge, look no further than The Local Eatery & Pub in Westfield. Chef Cory unapologetically creates good food from well-sourced ingredients and isn’t afraid of a challenge.

The ambiance of The Local feels dynamic and organic, yet relaxing at the same time. When you walk in, you can see the farmers that currently supply the restaurant. There is something refreshing about total transparency. The Local is an 80% from-scratch kitchen, and boasts farm-fresh and hand crafted plates, so the experience is an adventure from start to end. Here is food that speaks for itself with a competitive, no-nonsense chef behind it. Get to know Chef Cory: 5

QA

Q: Define your food and The Local Eatery & Pub for us.

Q: What’s your personal favorite ingredient to cook with?

A: Upscale dining - my goal is to make

A: Right now? Black garlic. Do you know

food that people want to take pictures of before they eat it. Our restaurant is a concept of farm-to-table that allows for us to directly support local growers and bring the best, freshest food to the customer. We always use what’s in season, which means constant change. Our food is respected. We are a place for the foodie, but with a family spin. It’s where a group of friends can share appetizers and drinks, or a family can enjoy fresh food.

what that is? (I had no idea, though I’m deeply in love with garlic, so black garlic sounds to me like an intense, seductive version of regular garlic, and thus something I need to know about.) It originated in Asia and is made in clay pots where it ferments for 3 - 4 months. It kind of tastes like sweet licorice.

Q: Does that make it difficult to keep a consistent menu? Do people know what to expect? Or should I say, do they mind not knowing what to expect? A: Yes and no. Our Market Specials rotate about every two weeks. I think it keeps people coming back to see what’s new, what’s in season, what we have pushed the limits on. They trust us. Then there are our House Favorites and Classics - we always keep those on the menu year round. Q: Hmmm...so what one word should come to your patron’s mind when they eat your food? A: “Interesting”. I make food that is out-ofthe-box and pushes the envelope without letting it fall. My approach is to bring a dish to the table with unusual flavors you would never think to combine, but yet have it taste like flavors that belong together.

________________ Braised lamb shoulder, butternut polenta and fall veggies

Q: What are your culinary priorities? A: Cleanliness and organization. If those

are missing, it makes a good dish really difficult to accomplish. A kitchen and chef’s space has to be organized to let creativity flow. My personal pet peeve is clutter, so I guess this just flows over into the professional space.

Q: Speaking of you, what trait in your personality do you think comes through on your food? A: My competitive spirit. I love a good competition and want to be the best. (In fact, Chef Cory and Chef Craig are competing in the World Food Championships in Las Vegas! The competition will air on A&E March 3-16. We are cheering them on from Carmel!)

________________ Squid ink risotto, grilled squid, and pumpkin gremalota

Q: If someone is new to The Local, what do you suggest they try? A: Any of the Market Specials. They are the

result of our constant creativity, and because they’re based on seasonal ingredients, each part of the dish is guaranteed to taste its best.

Q: What is your most popular menu item? A: Probably the Black Bean Quinoa

Veggie Burger (avocado, goat cheese, arugula, cilantro pesto and chipotle mayo)

Q: What is your favorite thing to make currently? A: Corn Bread and Crawfish. From-scratch cornbread muffins covered with crawfish gravy, white cheddar and chives. People crave it. Q: What do you like to cook at home? A: I never cook at home. It’s what I do all day and it’s always on my mind. So, no cooking at home for me.

jam. Mmmmmm. Or the Roasted Poblano Torta, with black beans, roasted poblanos, guacamole, tomato, jalapeño, romaine and garlic aioli. Or the braised pork butt tossed in a house bbq topped with a house sauce and slaw. I could keep going! And I cannot even speak to the succulent seven Market Specials, because those change every two weeks! I learned from The Local that the whole eating experience should be one rich in agriculture, community, nourishment, and filled with flavors along the way that bridge the growers to the consumers. The conclusion is: Head to The Local with your family or gang of friends, and enjoy local ingredients with maximum flavor made by chefs with maximum talent. You never know what they’ll come up with next. The Local Eatery & Pub also has a gluten free menu and caters to specific dietary needs.

From the way he said the last sentence, it was like that confession made him a better chef. My 5-year old daughter ordered the Mac-NCheese, which, as a dietitian mom, I must confess is an order that typically makes me cringe. However, I was eating hers with this Mac-N-Cheese! She sweetly fought me for it, as she devoured every bite of the cavatappi pasta, white cheddar cheese sauce, and bacon lardons. It was smooth, creamy, and comfort in a bowl. Nothing was left. What Classics looked good to me? The Lamb Burger, with feta basil mousse, arugula, cabernet onions and tomato

November 28 - December 14 God’s Favorite by Neil Simon/Westfield Playhouse. Successful Long Island businessman Joe Benjamin is a modern-day “Job” with a demanding wife, ungrateful children, and wisecracking household employees. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any worse, he is visited by Sidney Lipton, a messenger from God (and compulsive film buff) with a mission: test Joe’s faith and report back to “the Boss.” The jokes and tests of faith fly fast and furious as Neil Simon spins a contemporary morality tale like no other in this hilarious comedy. Training for the

Big League

With Grand Park’s opening in Westfield, baseball has become the main focus. Roundtripper Academy has been focusing on baseball and players, however, for over 20 years. Roundtripper (RT), a baseball training academy, opened in Carmel in 1993 and moved to a larger facility in Westfield

eleven years ago. It’s a tribute to staff and their commitment to students that RT has had such a successful run. The RT staff consists of former pro and collegiate players, including owner Chris Estep. All-American at the University of Kentucky, Estep went on to play for the Pirates, Reds and Expos. Giving lessons to

youth during off-seasons showed him the need for this type of facility and for skilled, knowledgeable trainers. The personnel, whose bios are on RT’s website, know their job. Ken Niles, trainer and San Diego Padres scout, sums it up. “I’ve been to academies like this throughout the U.S. This place is unique due to the quality of coaches. Their level of expertise is amazing. The ability to understand the player, mentally and physically, results from years of playing and teaching.” The staff trains each student based on personal body type and skill; they don’t believe in a ‘cookie cutter’ approach. Each trainer has an expertise and generally targets a specific age group. Players reaching the next age/skill level are then moved to the appropriate trainer. RT prides itself on individual focus. Their main client is the up and coming ball player, but they’re willing to work with anyone with a goal. One example is a gentleman who was heading to fantasy camp and wanted to hit against big-league pitchers. He worked with Estep, who trained him as he would any player with lessons at bat and an at-home strengthening plan. Sue Estep, co-owner of RT and Chris’ wife,

continued; “Our goal is to help each client become the very best that they can be. Their goal is our goal.” She mentioned a 9 year-old autistic player who, after a few lessons, hit his first homerun. He earned a car sticker to show off his accomplishment, and the staff was thrilled to share his experience. RT has two personal athletic trainers in partnership with Community Health Network. They’re available for member’s injury checks and strength training. They also have a workout facility and three outdoor fields. The fields were built to attract more competitive tournaments. Sue believes this objective, when shown to the City of Westfield, served as a catalyst to the building of Grand Park. Mayor Andy Cook often threw out the first pitch at tournaments and he saw the possibilities. The influx of players to Grand Park works for RT, too, with teams looking for practice facilities. New technology offers even more opportunities to improve. RT is the first of ten academies in the U.S. to have the Smart Kage. This technology measures speed, strength, balance, and skills specific to bat swing and pitching. Players and

coaches walk away with a personalized bio for each player and a readily accessible report for colleges or scouts. Technology such as the Smart Kage also allows trainers to focus on exactly what each individual needs. As Sue explains, “Every minute of every hour will be spent working on the correct dynamics.” Camps offered in winter expand opportunities for college and scout connections. From November to December, coaches from IU, University of Louisville, Ball State, Wright State, Anderson, Butler, and Dayton University, among others, work with players each Saturday. Summer camps are offered to players aged 6 to 12+. At summer’s end, a showcase featuring 115 high school prospects is scheduled for 40+ college coaches and scouts. A sense of pride is clear when Chris Estep talks of the 300+ players who have gone on to play college ball and the 35 who were drafted by the pros. Their accomplishments inspire everyone who works at RT. Niles

W

received a text from a player who received full tuition to play at Butler. “He texted me right after he told his parents. To know I had a part in opening that door means a lot to me.” Several RT students were recently mentioned in Baseball America. “We concentrate completely on the kids we train now, so it’s a nice reminder when we see former RT kids mentioned,” Sue reflected. The Esteps have seen many changes over the past 20 years. What has stayed the same is the belief in what they do at RT. Focus on the individual, their work ethics and the belief that each player can improve is a winning combination. “Every kid can’t be a big-leaguer,” said Estep, “but every kid who walks through that door will be better when they leave.”

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to.
