Letter from the Editor
‘Spring training’ is a descriptive phrase that, for me, comes with good and bad connotations. On the one hand, it implies warmth and sunshine ahead – no complaints there. On the other hand, ‘training’ sounds slightly ominous. Does it mean getting out of bed early? Is machinery involved? What about muscle soreness? There’s a reason perfectly normal people throw in the towel when they even think about exercise. No bailouts this year; my husband and I are hiking Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains in June and I don’t want to be the one who needs a helicopter rescue. I think they use llamas too, which sounds less expensive but awkward. At almost 6,600 feet Mt. LeConte is one of the highest points east of the Mississippi with its own weather station on top. ‘Trail’ euphemistically describes the paths hikers take, especially among the upper portions; views are breathtaking but so are the drop-offs. The friends we’re going with are slightly maniacal – I’ve definitely got to keep up.
Fortunately no one faced hazards of any kind while putting together Carmel City Magazine’s first issue of 2015. Our beat is pretty cushy, especially when you get to interview people like Whitney Dennis, newly appointed director of Carmel Clay Historical Society. She is delightful, enthusiastic and ready to liven the place up. Their 40th anniversary year-long celebration includes a spring exhibit called ‘The Art of the Love Letter” and Yoga on the Lawn; get details in “Living History.” I also loved “Bone Voyage” with its advice on what to do with pets when vacationing. Anyone who has pets has dealt with that particular trauma and Companion Medical Center’s advice was spot on. There’s also a great article on “Hot AM Spots” that takes you on a tour of local breakfast eateries. Every single restaurant was packed and the platters of food looked irresistible. Enjoy your read while I pound the pavement. More about LeConte later. Jackie Holloway, Editor JHolloway@CarmelCityMagazine.com

CARMEL CLAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY So much is brand spanking new in Carmel that it’s easy to forget we live in a town rich with history. Whitney Dennis, the fresh face and recently appointed Executive Director at Carmel Clay Historical Society, hopes to keep that history alive. Should the past matter to today’s locals? Whitney is just the one to tell us why. “One of the
Over 178 years worth of documents... goals at Carmel Clay Historical Society (CCHS) is to broaden our appeal,” Whitney begins. “With
over 178 years worth of documents, photographs, stories and information housed in the Monon Railroad Depot Museum, we strive for ‘informal learning’ so people can approach at their own speed. Since any experience becomes more

The preservation of the Monon Railroad Depot was, in fact, the first project undertaken by CCHS when it formed in 1975. After the railroad came to Carmel in 1882, the Depot was constructed a year later. It was last used in 1971 and almost razed due to its poor condition. Donations from schoolchildren and the community financed the Depot’s restoration, and in 1980 it was moved 50 feet from its previous spot to www.CarmelClayHistory.org become the newly appointed headquarters for the Society. are a priority. ‘Monon “Our location off the Monon Greenway and busy Mondays,’ for instance, downtown area is convenient and accessible to occur on the first Monday everyone,” Whitney notes. “We actually maintain of every month at 5:30 two buildings; the Monon Depot Museum and the pm; it’s our version of archives building next door. We fulfill that goal through the many programs and services we offer. As an example, our Historic Home Tour each December highlights local architecture and antiques. 2014 marked its 18th annual event and included five gorgeous homes:

into the personal lives of historic Carmel residents for insights into courtship, notions of romance and the lasting impact of the written word.” Whitney feels that this form of communication still retains significance in today’s digital world. “The unique qualities of a love letter, as opposed to a tweet or a like, resonate across the ages.”
Genealogy is a hot topic these days – witness the hit PBS series Genealogy Roadshow – and CCHS offers free assistance to those who want to explore their own personal records through Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest and other sites. Volunteers staff the computer lab at the Carmel Clay Public Library on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Two hours of research are conducted at no charge;

time Tea is just around the corner on April 16th. We’ve also become an official stop on the Carmel Arts & Design District Gallery Walk every second Saturday. When warmer weather arrives, we’re sponsoring Yoga on the Lawn led by a certified instructor to take advantage of our great location off the Monon. Call or visit our website to get specific dates and times.” The fate of historic structures is a CCHS consideration as well. “Together with the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission, we’re doing all we can to insure ethical care of the Kinzer home. Built in 1828, it’s the log cabin on the property currently on sale at the corner of 131st and Keystone. Another property in transition is adjacent to Carmel High School’s football field; Hank Hull’s dairy farm house, which is over 175 years old, stands there. Community awareness and support are critical so that these important homes are preserved.” As for the people who staff the Society, Whitney
says they always welcome volunteers. “Anyone who has the time and desire to help is appreciated– no previous knowledge or training is necessary! There are so many ways to contribute. We need, for instance, help collecting oral histories and people to staff our museum. Tour guides and event planners are also important positions. Basic office administration skills are invaluable when it comes to cataloging documents and photographs. If someone is interested, we hope they’ll call us. After all, if you’re living in Carmel now, you’re already a part of local history.”

The Art of the Love Letter Exhibit/Carmel Clay Historical Society. History tells us that certain human experiences transcend time – including love and the art of putting pen to paper to express terms of endearment to a loved one. The Art of the Love Letter Exhibit will feature about a dozen beautifully written love letters from the collection of personal artifacts of one of Carmel’s pioneers, William Kinzer. Kinzer grew up in a cabin on Main Street, just east of Keystone Avenue. Most of the letters were written around 1859 and the early 1860s and they offer lovers – and lovers of history – some insight into the ways we expressed our affections in another era.

SUPERHERO/Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre. “SUPERHERO, the story of a man called Jesus” is truly one of GHDT’s masterpieces. This critically acclaimed, full-length modern ballet follows the last week of the life of Jesus told through the perspective of Jesus, the women surrounding Him, and His complicated relationship with Judas Iscariot. Set in “anytime” and “everyplace”, this beautiful work portrays both large and small events in Jesus’ last days, both of which are ultimately significant. Back by popular demand, SUPERHERO is “a whirl of energy...through color, light, movement, sound” and is a timeless retelling of a man who changed human history.

SPRING into CELEBRATION Written by Amy Von Eiff : Owner/Executive Chef – A Cut Above Catering
T
he snowdrifts are all but gone and spring is here. If warm weather is not enough reason to celebrate, there are plenty of opportunities to bring friends and families together for a spring party. Hosting your very own soiree can lead to many different outlets for expressing your individualism and impressing your guests. Whether you’re celebrating a graduation, bridal/ baby shower, Easter, family reunion, or new home, these helpful tips for food, décor and spring trends are sure to make your party one to remember.
when planning your food event, ..... think .....
A spring party is the perfect opportunity to show off your home and garden. It is also a chance to express creativeness and personality through decoration. Try thinking green and get creative with the floral arrangements for tables and around the house. Even if the guests are inside, some nice greenery in your home will keep them in a springtime mood.
“in-season”
30
Hanging lanterns from tree branches offer an attractive way to keep the party going after sunset. Rocks and minerals contrast well with green gardens and brightly colored pastel flowers. Also, potted plants are a fun and easy gift for guests to help them remember an incredible evening. When planning the food for your event, think “in-season”recipes for a great spring vibe. Here are a few tips on how to display a springtime array: • Grilled seasonal vegetables displayed on a decorative platter • Customized cheese boards using
local cheeses from around Indiana • Mini desserts for an exciting alternative to a traditional cake, which also provide more choices and lots of color. Another delightful way to spice up your celebration would be to include signature and specialty drinks. Whether a cocktail or “mocktail” such as blueberry vodka lemonade, strawberry passion tea or a Texas Sunset, guests are guaranteed to feel indulged and refreshed. Springtime means school is winding down and graduation is soon aproach-

“together”
ing. Hosting a party for a recent grad is a rewarding celebration of their achievement. Structuring the decoration around the interests and basing the theme around a major or desired career is a fun way to recognize the graduate. Take it a step further and choose the graduate’s favorite foods for the party to make it even more personalized. Hosting a party can be a great way to bring friends and family together, but can also be hectic if you’re not experienced cooking for large gatherings or you just simply want to relax and enjoy yourself. By hiring a caterer, the stress can be alleviated and worries put to rest, while adding that extra flair to your soiree with rented tables and chairs, beautiful pastel colored linens and a customized fabulous menu. These celebrations are a fantastic way to thaw out after winter and bring style back into your everyday gatherings and springtime parties. 32

If you’ve got gas in your car and cash in your wallet, there’s no reason to go hungry in Carmel. That’s especially true in the morning. Based on our recent foray to restaurants dishing breakfast, a lot of locals have figured this out. Skies couldn’t compete with the sunnyside-ups served to a multitude of customers. Everywhere the low buzz of conversation mixed with the scent of coffee, bacon and sizzling platters piled high with delicious meals.

Insomnia isn’t always a bad thing; just ask Phoenix Niewidok. She’s the owner and creator of Skirtzophrenic, which merges art, music and fashion into one-of-kind skirts and scarves. “I get my best work done at night. I’ll put on some 70’s music like Three Dog Night or Karen Carpenter, pour a little red wine and let my inner muse fly.” Phoenix was born and raised in a Philadelphia neighborhood filled with artists and musicians. Fortunately, as it turned out, her home was directly across the street from a boutique owned by a former French model. “I knew I loved fashion the minute I stepped inside her shop. something going on. Hair shows, music festivals, art galleries, my friends’ closets…most of my materials come from these kinds of sources. Everything I gather is repurposed and sewn by hand. And denim rules.”
“I knew I loved fashion”
How is her particular style flying in Carmel? “I’ve learned that you can’t let
to buy a thing, she put me to work earning one piece at a time. From her I gained a lifelong appreciation for dressing with imagination. You don’t have to have racks of clothes or unlimited funds; a single accessory can make a difference.” A hairdresser for the last 25 years, Phoenix still loves being surrounded by innovative types. “The vibes are upbeat and there’s always
fear limit possibility – you have to turn fear into inspiration. Besides, the Midwest rocks! I’ve lived in Fishers for five years and I love it here. Everyone has a creative side, no matter where they live, and my skirts and scarves are a way for them to express it.” Phoenix has found a perfect venue for her pieces at Snazzy Boutique on the corner of Adams and Carmel Drive. She works there a few days a week and enjoys helping clients define their look. If you’d like something that’s truly unique, then a custom Skirtzophrenic might just be the thing.

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.
carmel facts & figures • Population of 81,534 • City named “The Best Place To Live in America” by Money Magazine • 6th highest per capita income in US • 58.5% of residents hold bachelor’s degree or higher • Lowest overall tax rate in the state for city this size or larger • Carmel High School has 96% graduation rate • 93% of Carmel High School students attend college • Carmel Clay Public Library is ranked 6th nationwide

Grand By Design St. Vincent Women’s Center
After talking to Julie Schnieders, executive director of the St.Vincent Carmel Women’s Center, it’s easy to share her excitement. Groundbreaking for this 95,000 square foot expansion at 13600 N. Meridian Street began last February, and the March 14, 2015, grand opening is right on schedule. “We want everyone to have a wonderful experience when they visit us. The St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center has been designed to be a destination where women can come to receive care from a multitude of women’s health providers – all conveniently located in one building.” Julie went on to elaborate, stating that “St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center is an out-patient facility that will furnish preventive care as well as treatment for those who are in need of care. Multiple specialists will be available to treat a wide spectrum of issues such as obstetrics and gynecology, maternal fetal care, internal medicine, bone health and breast care. That means a woman can easily schedule several appointments for one day.” Other advantages to the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center
include a full-service café called “Nature’s Table” and a women’s health boutique that sells durable medical equipment including wigs for cancer survivors, special bras and fitting services for women who have undergone a mastectomy, breast pumps for new moms, and bariatric supplies. In addition, the Women’s Center has plans for a full-service pharmacy to be housed in the outpatient facility. Wrapping all of this together will be an emphasis on patientcentered care. According to Julie, “We look forward to a creating a cohesive experience among professionals and patients. Registered nurses and billing navigation will be available to help coordinate care for patients. They will work with various specialists to schedule appointments and answer questions related to
individual diagnosis and treatment plans.” Clinicians caring for patients at St.Vincent Carmel Women’s Center will utilize a secure texting technology called Perfect Serve. “Secure texting between physicians on the Carmel campus will enable them to communicate in real time. If someone requires further testing, that request can be made immediately through a secure text to the appropriate care giver – minimizing the time a patient needs to spend waiting to receive care. In addition, online patient portals will allow patients to access results quickly and privately.” Julie is especially happy about the new imaging modality for breast exams available at the St.Vincent Carmel Women’s Center called tomosynthesis. Tomosynthesis, like computed tomography (CT) scan, takes approximately 50 images from multiple angles to build a three-dimensional image of a woman’s breast. Radiologists can then examine these images, slice-by-slice,
for a more thorough and accurate reading. “For the many women with dense breast tissue, tomosynthesis has been shown to increase cancer detection rates by up to 26 percent. This high-tech machine will make annual breast exams better for women and for doctors who interpret data.” Mark the date March 14th on your calendar. Julie says lots of activities are scheduled during the Women’s Center Grand Opening, such as free thyroid testing and breast exams,as well as walking tours for the community. Rachael Stafford, author of Hands Free Mama, will be the keynote speaker on “letting go to grasp what really matters.” Sounds like a winwin for superlative health care in the city of Carmel.

o v y E a g n e o at About the Pet h W t b Bu s?
When you’re planning a trip, there are important factors that should be considered when making decisions about pet care. Companion Animal Medical Center answers two frequently asked questions.
Q: What are the top pet
care considerations when planning a trip?
It would be impossible to relax on vacation if you thought your pets weren’t in good hands. Following are six things to think about before you bid adieu: 1. Consider taking your pet with you. If you’re traveling by car, allow more drive time, and be extra cautious during hot summer months. Many new cars have a shut-off function that activates after 20 minutes if a car is left idle, and a pet can die in a car in less than 10 minutes in the summer heat. 2. Flying with your pet is a great option. If you have a larger dog, you may have trouble getting him in coach, but smaller dogs can easily navigate the friendly skies with proper preparation. 3. If you’re leaving your pet behind, factors such as age, health and social behavior are important considerations. Cats work well in a home visited every other day. Dogs have a harder time than cats, as they are usually more social. If you want to have a dog sitter, make sure that the sitter stays with the dog and doesn’t just visit two or three times daily. Dogs need more human contact. 4. Pets that are very young and need reinforcement of training should stay at a kennel that can reinforce that training. They need early-morning, day and late-night walks to help train the bowel and bladder. 5. Old pets are more prone to illness. Consider continuous care provided by a sitter, vet or kennel. Only 24-hour facilities truly fill this need.
www.CarmelCityMagazine.com
6. Ill pets or pets that have debilitating issues need to be monitored 24 hours a day. If your pet is diabetic, has seizures or requires continuous observation, only use a 24-hour veterinary hospital with medical boarding. You want your pet to have immediate care if their condition changes.

Q: How do I find the right
boarding facility for my pet?
When you want to find a home away from home for your pet, don’t rely on just your instincts. Some providers might be very nice, but the truth is that you need someone committed to the success of your pet’s care. Following are seven basic questions to ask to find the best fit for your dog or cat. 1. How healthy is the facility? Floors and other living surfaces should be sealed. This is a little-known sign of attention to detail. Cement alone will harbor infectious bacteria that can compromise your pet’s health. 2. What measures does the facility take to reduce stress for pets? Find a place most like home to reduce stress and help prevent poor habits from being formed during her stay. For example, if you primarily keep your dog in your home and walk or exercise her for short periods of time daily, don’t put her in a kennel that doesn’t offer a similar routine. If your dog is very social with other dogs, choose a facility that offers play time or daycare for dog-todog interaction. 3. Do the hours of operation match your needs? Consider drop-off and pick-up times. When you return from your trip, you want to reunite with your pet as soon as you can. Make sure your boarding facility makes it possible. 4. How safe is the facility? Does the building have a fire alarm, sprinkler system and security system? Is there a security fence around the entire kennel? Do they have overnight attendants in case of an emergency?
www.CarmelCityMagazine.com
5. Does the facility combine training with boarding? Many kennels have trainers that train your dog repeatedly throughout the week while you are gone. This reinforces the lesson. It is vital that you spend time with the trainer in order to learn how to interact with your pet when you return.
94
6. Are grooming services available? Having your pets bathed after a few days of boarding will make them feel and smell better when you take them home. 7. Is a veterinarian on staff? Clients bring in their pets and assume they are healthy, but the pet may be incubating a disease or process that becomes apparent during boarding. Kennel attendants are great at loving and caring for your pet but are not trained to identify clinical disease processes. On-staff veterinarians can aid in promoting compliance of care protocols, make sure that the pets near your pet are healthy and optimize your pet’s experience.

divorce
A Process Changing for the Better Even though divorce rates have risen considerably in the last few decades, the divorce process has been slow to evolve. Alternate Dispute Resolution, or mediation, is often used to resolve dissolution actions prior to trial; however, the track leading up to mediation is adversarial and time consuming. There is good news: things are changing for the better! Collaborative divorce is a process by which couples work through issues of child custody, parenting time, division of financial assets and payment of marital bills and expenses through non-litigation techniques guided by specially-trained, experienced family law attorneys with the assistance, of collaboratively trained professionals, such as divorce coaches, child specialists, and financial specialists. The goals of collaborative divorce prac-
tice are similar to litigation in that collaborative professionals consider the best interests of the children in custody and parenting time issues and the law in the division of assets and debts. However, collaborative professionals do not consider these issues in a vacuum, but rather in ways that also address the emotional and personal needs of the family that is being separated. Collaborative practice recognizes that the spouses are often forever linked – even if divorced – by children, grandchildren and long-time friends. The collaborative model is designed to assist divorcing spouses work through their disputes constructively and peacefully. This allows both parties to move forward as individuals with dignity and respect without the post-traumatic stress that often accompanies divorce. 97
Most divorcing couples share a concern that the divorce process will be long, drawn out, and expensive. Statistics show that collaborative divorces are often a third less expensive than a litigated divorce – even with the use of collaborative professionals – and about a third the time.
Just as in divorce litigation, collaborative practice requires both parties to provide full disclosure of all relevant issues and facts involving the children, as well as a full disclosure of all financial assets and liabilities. Both parties exchange all information and documentation necessary to make informed decisions regarding custody, parenting time, and division of the marital estate. Moreover, each party is given the time necessary to process, evaluate, and apply the information to his/her individual circumstances. Through collaboration and communication, parties are able to resolve their differences in such a way that is beneficial to both. There is a Chinese proverb that is often used by collaborative professionals: “Never cut what can be untied.” This is especially true in cases where married couples, especially those with children, know that divorce is inevitable, but do not wish to undergo the financial, personal and emotional expense and stress of litigation. Dissolution is never a “winner-take-all” proposition. In fact, in most cases, there are no real winners, only losers. Protracted litigation takes a personal toll that may never be repaired. Litigation often results in emotional hurt, hard feelings, distrust and outright hatred, which negatively impacts the ability of the parties to successfully co-parent their children. 98
Why less expensive? Costs are reduced because collaborative professionals work through issues effectively and efficiently. Divorce coaches help clients with emotional issues that are often entangled in property division and child-related issues. Child Specialists work with the parents to develop custody and parenting plans, and are trained to identify parenting issues and address them effectively in meetings with parents. Financial specialists help the parties to divide property effectively. Why less time? There is a significant time savings because the collaborative process moves as quickly as the parties wish it to move. There is no waiting on discovery deadlines and court dates. The parties and attorneys are able to streamline the process making it much more time efficient. Although there are real financial and time benefits, there are also significant personal benefits to collaborative divorce. Divorce is never a happy experience, but collaborative practice makes it as good as it can be. If you are interested in collaborative divorce, call any member of our collaborative team. We will be glad to answer any questions, and help you decide whether collaborative divorce is right for you! estled away in a beautiful setting off Oak Road in Westfield is one of the area’s truly premier antique and gift shops, Acorn Farm Country Store.
www.WestfiledCityMagazine.com
Housed in a two-story cottage-type home, the store displays its stock in a variety of rooms chock-full of eclectic and interesting items vying for attention. It’s difficult to see everything on just one go-round, so back-browsing is not uncommon here. The shop is surprising in its scope of inventory, offering everything from early fine period antique furniture and glassware to mid-century and later collectibles. And these pieces are complemented by a wide array of novel gifts and decorative accessories. Of course, the inventory changes as pieces come in and go out, but, generally, you’ll find antique tables, chairs, dry sinks, cupboards, stoneware and many wooden and metal smalls, plus fine china, blue transfer ware, pattern glass, depression-era items and lots more on the floor. In addition to all that, there are contemporary WCM - 4
furniture reproductions and modern-day accessories. A wide selection of linens, candles, signs and other items make it difficult to get out the door without finding
premier antiques and gifts something that suits in all price ranges. Another attraction of the shop is the popular tablesetting seminars held in May and November of each year. Cherie Grunske, a talented designer from Grand Rapids, MI sets six different tables
table-setting seminars each May & Nov at the store, using items from the shop for each table, giving recipes and sharing dessert. It’s a little shopping, a little eating and a lot of fun for those attending. As pleasing as all this is, there’s even more to delight at Acorn Farm!
The combined talents of Jill, Mic and daughter Becky
Besides the shop, itself, the three are also deeply immersed in the history of Acorn Farm. Its setting and chronicles are definitely part of the attraction when visiting the country store. First, there’s the westward turn in off of Oak Road, where tall trees edge the property, breaking only for the driveway. The road to the shop curves and winds maybe a quarter mile past beautiful grounds, forage and out buildings. On first visit, you begin to wonder what this place is and know instinctively it’s something more than a great antique and gift shop. Indeed. What this is -- is the site of the first day camp for children in the United States. In 1933, Jill’s father, Herb Sweet, started a day camp for kids on the 40-acre property. For $3 a week, during the height of the Great Depression, Herb would pick up your child at home, occupy him with wholesome camp activities, feed him lunch and teach him about nature from 9-3:30 each day,
www.WestfieldCityMagazine.com
First, there’s proprietress Jill Sweet Mead, ever ready with a smile, plus a friendly suggestion or solution for those customers with a particular need. According to her husband, Mic, “she’s the real secret to our success at the shop because she wants everyone to be happy.”

then return him safely home.

Two years later, Herb and his wife, Dee, bought the property and began, in earnest, to enrich the lives of young 5-12 year old boys and girls from the north side of Indianapolis during their summer vacation from school. During World War II, the camp operated Monday through Saturday, with alternating groups of kids coming Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Cost per child was $27.50 per month.
historic grounds
At first, the camp was mostly nature-oriented, with hiking trails through the woods, bird-watching, woodcrafts and archery. As the years went by, though, activities were expanded to include many more crafts, games, swimming, caving and even log cabin building. “Herb Sweet was a man who loved kids,” says Mic, his son-in-law, “and the kids loved him.” Herb and Dee ran the camp successfully for 45 years. It closed WCM - 6
in 1977. An old store built in 1855 and originally located in the heart of downtown Westfield was re-located to Acorn Farm when Herb
learned it was slated for demolition. Once housing a telephone company and other businesses, it is now one of the out buildings on the right side of the drive as you enter the property.
That love of old things At one time, the first motorized fire truck owned by the city of Westfield was located on the grounds at Acorn Farm. For years, the kids at

camp entitled “Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow.” It is available at the shop. Besides running the day camp, Dee Sweet was also interested in antiques and even became a formal appraiser of them. That love of old things was clearly passed on to her daughter, Jill, who has now successfully operated an antiques and accessories business for two decades. It’s just an added bonus for visitors to the country store that she does so on the beautiful and historic grounds at Acorn Farm.

“Serving the community of Westfield is a passion of ours.” This statement on the Union Baking Co. website shows how committed Joe Quinn and Kelly Evans are to excellence. The two are fulfilling their dream – a small town bakery, selling homemade, fresh goods to happy customers. Their stories aren’t typical of bakery owners. Kelly, once a hotel manager, then a corporate flight attendant, traveled the world. Joe’s degree in Business Administration didn’t lead him directly into business. No stranger to following his dream, Joe played drums in a band that toured the Midwest, worked in a Broadripple pub and then moved into management. Growing up, Kelly watched the Food Network and still does, The Barefoot Contessa and Everything Italian being two favorites. She baked in her leisure time and formed the idea of opening a bakery after a flight to Zurich. “Our pilot bought a box of French macarons (a brightly colored sandwich-like confection). I ate the whole thing.” Kelly returned home, baked her own macarons and shared them with friends.
Their response, along with the need to lighten her crazy schedule, encouraged her to consider a new career. The next day she and her mom found a place to rent for a bakery in Zionsville. She was very successful there, but luckily for Westfield, circumstances led to a new location at the corner of Union Street and State Road 32 in September 2013. Enter Joe. The two had met in Zionsville and were dating. He had always cooked and had become pretty adept. While managing beer and wine stores, Joe also found recipes that paired with different wines, knowledge that he would share with customers. “A man would come in, describe a dinner with lobster ravioli but say his wife hated white wine. I could help him choose an appropriate red.”
WCM - 12
Joe’s friendship with restaurant owners allowed him to further develop kitchen skills. “I was a ‘pup’ when it came to testing recipes and working in restaurants, but my association with different chefs was wonderful. I could see how they thought, how they mixed things together.” When the new location at 303 E. Main became available in 2014, Joe was all in. “The kitchen was larger and there was more parking too.” He quit his job and the new, improved Union Baking Company with bakery and café was born. “It’s scary but exciting,” Joe reflected. “The more Kelly and I thought about it, the more we thought we could do this – we could totally do this!” As for the menu, the bakery features Kelly’s special French
“unique ing
redients”
macarons, éclairs, scones and more, along with coffees and teas. They also offer specialty cakes, including multitiered wedding cakes. On the café menu, there are daily items as well as a special of the day with various soups, sandwiches and sides; you never know what Joe will come up with. He enjoys rich, old-school French food, but you can find him cooking anything from PB&J to Duck Confit. He doesn’t limit himself and feels there’s room for everything. “We can do Indiana chili with corn and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer one day and fine French cuisine the next.” Recipes come from many sources. Some they find, test and tweak, while others are old family favorites like Irish stew. Joe’s mom always advised ‘waste not, want not.’ While Joe thinks she may have meant more than just food, he follows this practice when he cooks. One time, for instance, he took advantage of a crazy good deal at Costco and ended up with a boatload of mushrooms. What to do with this excess? That was the birth of Joe’s Mushroom Risotto. Approachable, delicious food is the goal as well as the use of unique ingredients. Customers can expect seasonal changes, with light and fruity in spring and summer and, well, pumpkin of course in the fall. Cookies are specialized for holidays too.
” l a o g e h t s i d o o f s u o “delici Joe and Kelly cater small events like showers and private parties with 12 – 15 people. Currently their café is opened for breakfast and lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays, 7:00 – 4:00. Could dinner be in the future? This couple is obviously not afraid to embrace change, so stay tuned. Thanks to Kelly Evans & Joe Quinn Owners Union Baking Company

A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles, in Just Six Months. (The smile you’ve always wanted)
WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY
I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to. People tell me they feel stuck because they don’t want to wear metal braces for years, or they’re concerned that other corrective teeth straightening procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. I’m always looking into the the best technologies and procedures to give my patients the smile they’ve always dreamed about, and I’ve finally found an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution that can give you the smile you’ve always wanted—Six Month Smiles®. Great results in less time than you ever thought possible. Finding cosmetic solutions that fit your lifestyle. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one.
