Letter from the Editor

We’ve been going to the Smoky Mountains forever. Years ago my mom’s family built a cabin on the Little Pigeon River with a beach and swimming hole and six heirs now share the upkeep. The kids love it. Between the outdoors and Dollywood there’s plenty to keep them entertained. Hiking the park trails has always been a favorite pastime but I never liked the part where you camped overnight and slept on the ground. Running water, electricity and a comfortable bed are my requisites for an evening out. Until our recent hike to LeConte, that is, where we only sort-ofkind-of got the bed.

Dave & Anne Caveness, Jackie & Steve Holloway

What a trip! Four of us traipsed 6.5 miles up Rainbow Falls and 7.2 down on Bullhead, trails which originate at the same parking lot. In my calculation that adds up to 14 miles in two days. With a backpack. And it was totally worth it.

At the top, LeConte Lodge looks like a pioneer village with a string of small, rough-hewn structures lit by kerosene lamps and heated by propane. When we stumbled in around 3:00 a guide showed us how to pump water, pointed out the building with privies (two flushed, two didn’t) and led us to our cabin with a double bunk (we snagged the bottom), wash stand and front porch with rocking chairs. “Dinner,” he said, “promptly at 6:00 and breakfast at 8:00 in the lodge.” Man, the family-style menu was delicious – heaping platters of potatoes, beef with gravy, biscuits, green beans and fruit that simply disappeared. Breakfast the next morning was unbelievable. One of my favorite moments was a solo trip at midnight to the privy on the other side of camp. I was a little nervous – a bear alert had been issued – but the sky was crystal clear and at 6,600 feet there was hardly a sound. It felt like a cathedral under an enormous canopy of stars, proving that some of the best memories can be truly unexpected. Jackie Holloway, Editor JHolloway@CarmelCityMagazine.com

One of the greatest arts leaders in the nation. In less than five years, the Center for the Performing Arts has established itself as the arts leader in one of the nation’s fastest growing counties and has positively impacted the economic growth of the City of Carmel, Hamilton County, and Central Indiana. Since the first tuning performances in November of 2010, the Center, its six Resident Companies, and other local arts organizations using our facilities have presented a combined total of more than 1,200 performances and distributed tickets to over 500,000 patrons. In addition, our education and outreach programs have impacted the lives of thousands of children and adults through performing arts experiences, learning opportunities and cultural enrichment. 32

“We have a stellar lineup for this very special season marking five years of offering world class entertainment to fans of great performances. Our ever-expanding lineup also ensures that each of our three performance spaces is brimming with activity throughout the year,” said Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, President and CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts. The Center for the Performing Arts 5th Anniversary Season presented by Allied Solutions, includes one of the world’s most highly-lauded cellists Yo-Yo Ma; legendary singer and songwriter Paul Anka; and the Gatlin Brothers in their 60th Anniversary Tour. After sitting down with Roy, you’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip to Cajun country as he talks about the culture, the people and the food. It’s an area rich in history and even richer in flavor. Q: When did the idea for Mudbugs start? A: My first winter in Indy, I cooked tons of gumbo. I was even cooking it as holiday gifts for clients and they went crazy over it. My wife said I should share my food with the community in a bigger way. Never once dreamed I’d be a restaurant owner, but it just makes sense. Cooking Cajun, serving the community with food from my hometown, getting to know my customers; it all gives me energy. We opened in 2007 - and that first year we won ‘favorite food’ at the State Fair for our hush puppies. It has only gotten better since then. We love what we do. Q: Describe your menu. A: Home cooked Cajun food. Nothing else. Everything is just like I grew up with in Louisiana - only in bigger batches.

Food

Q: What was it like growing up in Abbeville, Louisiana? A: Everyone cooks. Everyone. It is a culture of recipes passed down from generation to generation…and you keep it authentic. You don’t stray from the recipe. When I was a kid, every family on the block cooked dinner at home. When I came home from college, my friends and I went on a “gumbo tour”, going from house to house, eating all the gumbo we could because we missed those flavors so much. If you go down to Abbeville and tell them you’ve never tried Cajun, you will immediately have six people invite you over for dinner. People are excited to share their food - and everyone’s door is open! Q: Okay, so for someone who has never had Cajun food, where should they start on your menu? What should they try first? A: Oh, goodness! If someone comes in and tells us that they’ve never tried Cajun food, we look them straight in the eye and tell them they are not allowed to order anything. I immediately go back to the kitchen and make them a “sample plate” of almost everything we have going in the kitchen: étouffée, dirty rice, gumbo, Miss Ann’s Crawfish Casserole, red beans, jambalaya, a hush puppy, etc.

Q: What do people say about your food? A: “Filled with flavor” - everything that comes out of a Cajun kitchen should have layers and layers of flavor that hit your palette at different times as you eat it. Another thing - if any of my customers mention they are attempting to do a homemade crawfish boil for a group of friends, I give them my cell number and tell them to call me! And they will…even if they are making it in a pinch on Sunday, they call. I love to help people adventure through cooking Cajun food at home.

Q: We’ve talked about the culture of Cajun country, Louisiana; what about the culture of Mudbugs? What is a week at Mudbugs like? A: It’s a constant Cajun celebration. Food is always going. Jambalaya takes 1 hour. Red beans take 5 hours. We make 20 quarts of gumbo at a time in a huge kettle. Plus, the longer the food sets, the better it gets. Most people who make Cajun food at home love it even more the next day when the flavors have had time to marry. We have specials a couple of times a month; all you can eat gumbo on Tuesdays, all you can eat red beans on Wednesdays. And the best - we

Cooking

have “Gator Day” where we bring in the big screen, play Swamp People, and make gator po’ boys and gator chili. Big celebration. We try to bring my culture home and share it with the community.

Another unique thing about Mudbugs is that Roy has a collection of his favorite products - seasonings, spices, and secrets he uses and sells to customers. Every bottle of sauce, every jar of seasoning, has a story and an individual behind it who Roy personally knows. (And he will gladly tell you about it!) I picked up a jar of “Baked Bean Syrup”, which he explained to me was from Miss Marilyn. He called her up and asked if he could sell the sauce he refers to as “cheating in a jar.” (You’d be glad Miss Marilyn agreed!) Any seasoning or sauce you could find in his hometown, you can find in his restaurant…and Roy will teach you how to use it. If you’d like to eat at a local restaurant with deep historic roots in Cajun country and experience a piece of the culture Roy grew up with, head to Mudbugs and try… everything!

The Art of

Consignment

Interview with Amanda Newman, Owner Carmel Consignment, The District Exchange, Amanda’s City-Chic & Designer Men’s Room

Shopping these days can be a challenge for the price-conscious consumer. One minute you’re giddy with anticipation and the next you’re gulping for air. Yeah, the skinny jeans fit! Boo, the cost busts the budget. Does looking chic mean you have to break the bank? There’s got to be a better way. Amanda Newman definitely has a few ideas on how smart consumers can spruce up more than just their wardrobes. She and her husband Jeff own four separate consignment stores and all are dedicated to the proposition that great quality can come at even better prices. For those of us who like a bargain, their unique perspective on shopping – and purchasing – is both entertaining and educational. It is also a testament to good old-fashioned entrepreneurship. “I’m an Oklahoma native who married a guy from Paw Paw, Michigan,” Amanda begins. “My husband’s job brought us to Carmel where we’ve raised two sons. The entire family is now involved in the business of consignment. My husband runs the men’s shop in Broad Ripple, our 20 year old helps out while getting his college degree in marketing and our 16 year old works at the furniture store two days a week. We think it’s important that kids appreciate what it takes to earn a living.” 52

Consigning “Since we acquire inventory from items that clients bring to us, we recommend these guidelines to simplify the approval process: Furniture, especially larger pieces, are best submitted by photo either online or brought to the store. Drop-offs are Monday – Friday and by appointment only on weekends. Contracts usually last 90 days; afterwards items may be donated or retrieved. Accessories may be brought in during the week without an appointment. We like to see unusual things walk through the door, like those from overseas or different parts of the country. Our best selling items are staples like sofas, dressers, bookshelves, lamps and decorative pieces. After merchandise sells, consignors receive 50% of proceeds and checks are mailed monthly.

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

Clothing at The District Exchange is paid for on the spot in cash or store credit, and we love the things you love, like Free People, Urban Outfitters and H&M. DMR in Broad Ripple and Carmel Consignment both pay after items sell with percentages that vary according to category. You receive 70% of the selling price for jewelry, for instance. In Carmel we like upscale, new or gently used clothing and accessories with brand names like J. Crew, Ann Taylor or handbags like Coach or Louis Vuitton. We never judge but make selections based on past experience. It’s a pure and simple business decision.” 53

This family affair began with Carmel Consignment at Meridian Village Plaza at 136th and N. Meridian in 2002. Initially ladies’ clothing was the main emphasis along with home accessories. When additional space became available two years later, Amanda and Jeff acquired larger pieces of furniture which left less room for clothing. Customers clamored for more racks, so a second store dedicated solely to home interiors opened on Main Street in 2008. “Our little house on Main was perfect until we bumped up our inventory with model home close-outs. Business was booming so it became quickly obvious that we needed more space; hence the move to a third location on Rangeline in 2010. That expansion allowed us to create three separate profiles: Carmel Consignment for designer and current fashions, The District Exchange for trendy apparel, and Amanda’s CityChic for furniture and home décor. At about the same time Jeff opened Designer Men’s Room (DMR) in Broad Ripple for men’s casual/business attire and motorcycle gear.” Wait, did she say ‘motorcycle gear’ in the same breath as ‘business attire?’ “Listen,” Amanda deadpans, “men are a whole different breed when it comes to shopping. To begin with, they look for something that day. If the weather is cold they want jackets, if it’s hot they buy shorts. None of this planning ahead for the next season. Men still wear coats, jackets and ties whereas women have pretty much dropped suits. And yes, motorcycle gear is a great niche for anyone who likes to ride. Jeff is really talented when it comes to merchandising for guys. Frankly, I don’t get it.” Fortunately, Amanda and Jeff “get” the important aspects of managing the consignment business. Their instincts have been honed over 14 years of working to ensure that whether selling or buying, clients walk away satisfied with their experience. The Newman family has also shown they care about their community through strong connections to local charities. It is this combination of integrity, ingenuity and hard work that has led to their success. For more information about each store, including locations, phone numbers and hours, please visit www.yourconsignmentconnection.com Interview by Jackie Holloway Photography by Cindy Wardlow

Shopping “The best approach to shopping consignment for both furniture and clothing is to visit our stores with an open mind. Our inventory fluctuates daily as a result of what’s come in, so you never know what you’ll discover. If you shop frequently, you’re more apt to find that once-in-a-lifetime piece. Generally items are 25% – 35% of the original price; if it’s really desirable, it might be 50%. If you’re looking for something for your home, bring measurements or pictures of the room to help our associates get what you want. If it’s not here today, it may be tomorrow.” “Clothing, accessories or furniture that haven’t sold within 90 days are, with the discretion of the consignor, usually donated to charity. My family’s favorites include Second Starts through Carmel Methodist Church on Rangeline, Thrifty Threads for the Julian Center, Westfield Women’s Ministries, and The Charity Rack. Expired items are also sold at greatly reduced prices in-store with proceeds going to outreach missions. We feel giving back to the community is just as important as buying and selling.”

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

CARMEL FACTS & FIGURES • Population of 81,534 • City named “The Best Place To Live in America” by Money Magazine • 6th highest per capita income in US • 58.5% of residents hold bachelor’s degree or higher • Lowest overall tax rate in the state for city this size or larger • Carmel High School has 96% graduation rate • 93% of Carmel High School students attend college • Carmel Clay Public Library is ranked 6th nationwide

A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles, in Just Six Months. (The smile you’ve always wanted)

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to. People tell me they feel stuck because they don’t want to wear metal braces for years, or they’re concerned that other corrective teeth straightening procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. I’m always looking into the the best technologies and procedures to give my patients the smile they’ve always dreamed about, and I’ve finally found an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution that can give you the smile you’ve always wanted—Six Month Smiles®. Great results in less time than you ever thought possible. Finding cosmetic solutions that fit your lifestyle. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one.

DIVORCE FAMILY LAW MEDIATION

The divorce process, even for couples that desire to reach an agreement, can be long and difficult. Protracted negotiations, exchanges of information, delays in communication, and the overall process can create frustration and expense. Family law mediation is a way to bring together those elements in a concentrated format and, with the assistance of a trained professional, can result in a comprehensive agreement in even the most difficult cases.

WHY MEDIATION? The primary advantage with mediation is simple; it allows the couple to maintain control over the outcome of their dissolution. When a case reaches traditional end, a judge hears all the relevant evidence, listens to witnesses, weighs the value and credibility of evidence and, ultimately, makes a decision based on the facts as he or she is aware of them. Frequently, with a complicated case, the court may take weeks or even months to issue a final ruling, leaving the parties and children in limbo during that time. As importantly, the ruling that is issued is

not required to conform to the requests of either party but rather with the law and other factors as the judge applies them. Therefore, it is not uncommon that each party is dissatisfied with the results of a judge’s ruling despite the investment of time and resources to present their side of the case in the best manner possible. Upon entering the court room, they have lost control of the end result. No matter how skilled or capable their advocates, there can be no guarantee as to outcome. In mediation, the participants maintain total control over the final result.

SOLUTIONS NOT POSITIONS

At mediation, each party provides the mediator with an outline of the situation, their impressions of it, their priorities, and the results they are looking to achieve. A skilled mediator can recognize where the parties, despite their differences, have common ground and common interests and can begin to help the parties recognize this commonality primarily, spreading it to the other areas in effort to come up with 91

a year-round schedule including scheduled activities can be worked through, week by week or even day by day in a mediation.

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

solutions. A trial is about positions asserted to cause a judge to decide the outcome in the favor of one side or the other. A mediation is about finding solutions by working with both parties so that they can mutually determine an outcome to benefit the situation overall. A most particular element of this is the ability to customize plans involving the division of time with children and the sharing of responsibility for their activities and individual needs. These are difficult for a court to understand and implement based on the information they receive, especially if the information is contradictory. Given the volume of cases before a judge, it can be difficult not to fall into patterns based on guidelines and other general concepts that do not recognize or consider the specific needs of a particular family. In mediation, so long as the agreement is not directly contrary to a statute, the parties are free to deviate from those norms using times and locations for parenting time, working through unusual work schedules or special educational needs, and looking towards the big picture for a plan that will serve all the parties going forward rather than just being an immediate resolution.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Once the mediator has an idea where both parties stand and what the primary issues are, he or she acts as a go-between, communicating proposals and information between the parties while inviting each party to think creatively and work towards solutions rather than galvanizing positions. Frequently, these solutions involve determinations of simple items such as time or dates or the exchange of certain holidays for others; in more complicated situations, a comprehensive special education plan, agreements as to alternate caregivers/education providers and 92

MOVING FORWARD. Perhaps the single most lasting effect of resolving a divorce through mediation is the increased probability for all concerned to move forward rather than being weighted so heavily by the past. Courtrooms provide an excellent forge to galvanize bad feelings between the parties. Due to the nature of the court system, each party will spend a substantial portion of a hearing presenting testimony designed to convince the judge that the other parent’s flaws should result in the Court to choosing who is the “better” parent and adopt their plan for custody and parenting. The bad feelings created by that very process can last forever in some cases. With mediation, however, there is no need for “proof” of that nature to be voiced in a public setting directly in front of the other parent. By coming to an agreement, the parties have spared the majority of the injured feelings and direct attacks on their character almost certain to come out in the courtroom. Because it is their agreement, directed by them and punctuated by the details of their lives and their children’s lives, the likelihood that each party will abide the terms and the spirit of the terms is increased. Further, there is something else very significant for parties raising children to see going forward from such an agreement – that is, they can actually agree. Many difficult cases walking in the door to mediation have walked out with an agreement later that day. Mediation can be appropriate at many phases of the divorce process. In fact, mediation agreements will often require additional mediation to resolve future disputes before putting them before a court. If you become involved in a divorce action, consider mediation part of the possibilities for resolution; you might find that the results are less expensive and considerably less painful than going to Court.
