A Message from the Mayor of Carmel Named the Best Place to Live in America by Money magazine (#1 in 2012, #3 in 2014), Carmel is a vibrant city – a place where more than 85,000 people are excited to call home. Our safe and attractive neighborhoods, quality schools, unique retail areas, as well as arts and cultural opportunities make Carmel one of the fastest growing communities in the nation and a great place to establish a business.

Letter from the Editor
It was easy to come up with lots of reasons we love Carmel, which is our lead story this issue. Something that we all picked is the ubiquitous roundabout. If an intersection doesn’t have a roundabout now, it’s probably in the process of getting one. That combined with massive road construction has led to closures, detours and orange cones everywhere. Hey, it’s temporary and the end result will be a better, more efficient commute. In the meantime, a simple trip to the grocery can be confusing. I tried explaining this to the police officer who stopped me recently and he didn’t buy it. Sooo, I got my first ticket after years of flying under the radar and I’m now on the deferral program. That means I have to be very, very careful for 12 months; no speeding (can you go five miles over?) or traffic infractions of any kind. Next time you’re out and you’re annoyed by a slow driver, it’ll probably be me.
Odds of staying clean through October 15, 2016? I’d say about 50-50. The odds are much better if you like to do your shopping locally. When I was choosing items to be photographed for our holiday guide, I found list-worthy gifts everywhere I looked. Some boutiques, like the artist-owned CCA downtown, took a full hour of browsing because there were so many unique pieces at affordable prices. Carmel’s Arts & Design District has evolved into quite the one-stop destination for shoppers. While it’s cold outside you’ll need to fortify yourself with a sure-fire trip to one of our fine local restaurants. Try Eddie Merlot’s, Annessa Chumbley’s choice this issue for Great Chef’s. Her entertaining interview is mouth-watering. Many other favorite spots, as well as seasonal events and activities, can be found online at www.CarmelCityMagazine.com and at our sister website www.ExecutivePortfolio.com Enjoy your holidays but remember – always take it s-l-o-w on the roadways! 25 Reasons
WE LOVE CARMEL
Over the last decade or so our city has experienced phenomenal growth. Some of these changes have been literally earth changing, as evidenced by roads, bridges and roundabouts. Others have been more subtle, like the evolution of Carmel’s Arts & Design District. Wherever you go the landscape has been shaped, altered and transformed to create the backdrop for today’s thriving community. Since it’s easy to take all this for granted, we asked colleagues and friends to share what they like most about their hometown. Here are some of the reasons why Carmel is their favorite place to live.
FESTIVALS Our fests are the best, with Holiday on the Square rated as a winter season favorite. Held at Carmel Civic Square the Saturday before Thanksgiving, festivities include the city’s annual lighting ceremony animated by Santa, his elves and live reindeer. Summer kicks off with Carmelfest, a July 4th celebration with two days of parades, music and food, capped with unbelievable fireworks. Dread the end of warm temps? Not when you can celebrate the Carmel International Arts Festival in September. Visitors of all ages enjoy dance and song performances, concerts and a bunch of activities for children, in addition to a juried exhibit of artists from around the world. For dates and details on these and other annual events visit www.carmel.in.gov. ARTS & DESIGN DISTRICT Find something for everyone in Carmel’s downtown district filled with art galleries, showrooms,
restaurants, specialty shops and boutiques. Many of its sidewalks feature sculptures by J. Seward Johnson, whose life-like figures have earned him the title of ”The Norman Rockwell of American Sculpture.” Urban blight? Not in the vocabulary! GALLERY WALKS Second Saturday Gallery Walks are a signature event of the Carmel Arts & Design District. Eleven art galleries, all within walking distance on Main Street, offer extended hours and a chance to enjoy original works by local, regional, national and international artists. For monthly updates on this wonderfully eclectic experience visit www.carmelartsanddesign.com. THE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS The Center For The Performing Arts is Carmel’s cultural and entertainment focal point and is home to three separate venues. The Palladium is its crown jewel, topped with a classic dome and a grand yet comfortable concert hall that seats 1600. Across Center Green is The Tarkington with 500 seats, where one of its resident companies, Civic Theatre, celebrated its centennial in 2015. The Studio Theater next door offers flexible seating in an intimate setting perfect for comedy, dance and cabaret. Together the three venues provide an infinite range of performance opportunities that will attract artists from across the globe for decades to come. www.thecenterpresents.org THE WAREHOUSE A hip, multi-use performance venue in a converted machine shop off the Monon has taken the Carmel musical scene by storm. Owners Heather and Blair Clark have created an intimate forum for touring and local artists, as well as an opportunity for developing talent to hone their craft. During shows you can enjoy a craft beer or better-than13
good wine. And it’s a great spot to host your own parties or receptions with catering too! Truly a homegrown gem and an integral part of the lively action downtown. www.liveforthemusic.com FLIX BREWHOUSE Watching a movie never tasted so good! Flix Brewhouse is the new entertainment anchor in Merchant’s Square that sports eight auditoriums with state-of-the-art screens, projection and sound. First-run blockbusters come alive while you dine from a cooked-to-order menu and choose from a broad selection of soft drinks and adult beverages that include signature beers brewed onsite. Enjoy this winning combo of food and fantasy any night of the week. RESTAURANTS Carmel has witnessed an explosion of palettepleasing eateries throughout the city that serve up flavors from around the world. While there are too many restaurants to mention, some like Woody’s Library downtown have become delicious landmarks. Check out Grille 39 in the Renaissance for its sophisticated décor and mouth-watering steaks. With its proximity to The Center, divvy has become the place to share small plates before heading to a performance. Langton’s Irish Pub is also located in Carmel City Center with authentic Irish fare. And there’s no place like Mudbugs Cajun Café for home-cooked jambalaya. Looking for a good start to your day? Try A2Z Café off 96th street for an unbelievable breakfast. It’s locally owned and dishes up great lunches and dinners too. PIZZA, BURGER, CUPCAKE & DONUT MECCA What’s popped up faster than orange cones on the road? Try pizza, burger, cupcake & donut shops. Anywhere you turn there’s tasty temptation on top of slices, between slices or baked to its own confectionary perfection. Don’t resist, go on a 14
tasting tour. Favorite stops might include Mellow Mushroom, where you can watch a pizza from its first toss to its final delectable delivery. You have to include Bazbeaux, an Indy institution here in Carmel with possibly the best Margarita pizza around. And don’t forget Arni’s, BoomBozz and MacKenzie River. Burgers? For starters there’s Bru Burger on Old Meridian, Bub’s Burgers downtown and Matt the Miller in Carmel City Center. Cupcakes and donuts? Oh how to count the ways, but please visit Flying Cupcake, Jack’s Donuts, Bite Me Cupcakes and Gigi’s. Hmmm... time for a snack. CARMEL CITY CENTER Visit this city within a city where stunning architecture houses shopping, dining, apartments & condos, together with a host of cultural and civic programs. Its water features, walkable piazzas and breathtaking views of The Center For The Performing Arts make it a destination for tourists and locals alike. www.carmelcitycenter.com
INDIANA DESIGN CENTER Want to build, remodel or redecorate your home? A visit to the IDC makes it easy with its 11 retail showrooms, 12 design firms, artists and galleries, all showcasing the latest trends and offering expert advice. One of its most popular programs is the workshop series DESIGNER ON CALL, hosted by design professionals on the third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am. Contact their concierge to schedule an appointment and receive a complimentary 50 minute consultation to discuss a design dilemma. www.indianadesigncenter.com
PUBLIC SAFETY With 113 sworn police officers and 26 civilian support personnel, the Carmel Police Department is one of 500 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. and Canada to have achieved an internationally accredited status. Our low crime rate can be directly attributed to not only their high standards of excellence but also to their community outreach 15
Business Watch, Citizen’s Academy and Teen Academy, to name a few. Carmel Clay Schools are also under the watchful eyes of four officers assigned to Carmel High School and three officers to middle schools. According to Chief Tim Green, “These programs are examples of how our police officers work together with the public to make the city of Carmel a safe and caring community.” GREAT GROCERY STORES With the recent addition of Market District at 116th and Illinois, the purveyors of food have reached a new high. Despite its size MD manages to convey a boutique feel to its myriad selection of natural, organic and specialty items. Fresh Market and Whole Foods offer their own premium brands and super-fresh produce, as does perennial favorite Marsh. And you have to love the recently remodeled Kroger. Their live music on the weekends turns a trip for groceries into an experience you’ll savor. LOTS OF HEALTH CARE SERVICES, HOSPITALS & RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES If you’re going to get sick you might as well live where there’s a hospital on practically every corner. Franciscan St. Francis Health is one of Carmel’s newest facilities and offers easy access to treatments and procedures that require a short inpatient stay. St. Vincent Carmel Hospital, IU Health North Hospital and Methodist Sports Medicine are located here and all enjoy excellent national reputations. When it’s time to consider a retirement community, chances are there’s one just down the street. Woodland Terrace feels more like a resort with its spacious décor and amenities, as does Carmel Senior Living on N. Illinois. The Barrington, The Stratford at WestClay, Sunrise and CrownPointe Communities round out an outstanding roster of local choices.
16
CHURCHES Churches, synagogues and places of worship dot the landscape across Carmel. Some, like the new Mormon temple on 116th & Spring Mill Road, are impressive architectural landmarks, while others may be more humble. All attest to the traditional values of our strong Midwestern principles. For a list of local religious gathering places, visit www.carmel.in.gov
SCHOOLS The list of accolades for Carmel schools in academic and extra-curricular achievements is too long to summarize in one paragraph. Suffice it to say that both public and private educational opportunities abound in Hamilton County, starting with pre-K all the way through high school. Carmel High School alone enrolls approximately 4900 students, 86% of whom go on to post-secondary college or university, and offers 19 IHSAA sports with innumerable state championships. For a list of public, private and parochial options visit www.carmel.in.gov.
CARMEL CLAY PUBLIC LIBRARY In 2014, the Carmel Library was only one of nine in Indiana named a Star Library by the Library Journal Index, a national rating system based on four statistics: number of library visits, circulation, public access computer use and program attendance. More than just a pretty face, the library offers a vast array of services for people who love to explore knowledge, such as the latest books, magazines & newspapers, computers, audio books, children’s cassettes, resources for students and businesses, story times and reading programs. Visit www.carmel.lib.in.us for days, times and information.

MONON COMMUNITY CENTER Come explore this 146,000 foot facility and be amazed. Amenities include a fitness center, indoor aquatics, gymnasium, walking/running track, KidZone (childcare), The Waterpark and banquet/ meeting rooms. It also hosts hundreds of programs year-round for recreation, nature and fitness enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Central Park neighbors the Community Center, with over 161 acres of natural wetlands, boardwalk, an urban-style skate park and four miles of trails that connect to the Monon Greenway. www.carmleclayparks.com MONON GREENWAY Another excuse to NOT be sedentary, the Monon is a ‘rails-to-trails’ project that serves walkers, joggers, runners, cyclists and roller bladders. Hit the pavement any day and you’re bound to find lots of fellow nature lovers enjoying 5.2 miles of trails through woods, neighborhoods and downtown Carmel. If you begin at 10th Street in Indianapolis and end at 146th Street, you’ll rack up 15.7 miles – definitely a trip worth taking. www.carmelclayparks.com
PARKS Want to go park-ing? Carmel is loaded with ways to enjoy the great outdoors… and that includes your dog as well. Central Bark Park opened this August with over two acres fully enclosed by a 4-foot high fence (see website for details). Besides hiking, you can fish, play basketball, softball, soccer or volleyball, picnic, splash in waterparks or enjoy one of many playgrounds. Acres and acres are waiting to be explored, so visit www.carmelclayparks.com for more information.
BOOTCAMPS AND FITNESS AND YOGA - OH MY! Who says Midwesterners are out of shape? That’s clearly not possible in Carmel. Look at any strip center and you’ll find a workout studio close by. Not stretchy enough for yoga? Try 9Round kickboxing or Pilates or dancing or aerobics or running or pumping iron or swimming or... you get the picture. Now get out there and get fit!
COOL SHOPPING Years ago, shopping required a full tank and lots of travel time – but that was yesterday. Today, our city has got the goods when it comes to just about anything on your wish list. Try Carmel City Center for boutiques that carry everything from workout gear to trendy fashion for her, him or little ones. Stop by Indiana Design Center for your home, and peruse the arts + shop and pick up a bite in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Clay Terrace is an outdoor walking mall with over 80 stores & restaurants. And don’t forget antiques. You’ll find those in Antique Emporium, Old Town Antique Mall and Restyled. Viva la credit card!
CARMEL FARMERS MARKET ‘Get fresh on Saturday’ is now the Market theme year round. From May through September every Saturday, Center Green by the Palladium hosts a lively collection of vendors who sell farm-fresh meats, cheeses, fruit, and vegetables. Beginning November 14th and continuing every Saturday through March 12th (except December 26th & January 2nd), the Winter Market will be held at Wilfong Pavilion in Founders Park (just north of 116th & Hazel Dell) from 9 – 12 noon. Expect a full contingent of 24 vendors selling a variety of products including veggies. www.carmelfarmersmarket.com 19
BUSINESS-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT Did you know that Carmel’s Meridian Street corridor is home to the second largest concentration of office workers in the state of Indiana? You’ll find corporate headquarters for Delta Faucet, Monster. com, CNO, Midwest ISO and Telamon among others. Reasons why include high quality of life, high volume transportation routes, convenient air travel and an educated work force. Our low taxes are a plus as well. NEIGHBORHOODS WITH AFFORDABLE TO LUXURY HOMES Carmel’s reputation for McMansions misses the reality. Locally homebuyers can find high quality housing in a wide range of price points that suit first-timers to empty-nesters and all those in-between. Everyone enjoys the attributes that make our suburbs so attractive; safe neighborhoods, great schools, a vibrant city, good shopping and a reasonable commute to their place of work.
ROUNDABOUTS Once in a while it’s fun to feel superior, like when you watch an out-of-town license plate navigate a roundabout for the first time. From a distance of course. Since the 1990’s Carmel has been replacing stop signs and signalized intersections with roundabouts and we’re up to over 95, more than any other city in the country. As a result the number of injury accidents has been reduced by about 80% and the number of accidents overall by about 40%. And that’s why we happily go round and round. Written by Jackie Holloway 20

GREAT CHEFS
Eddie Merlot’s Interview by Annessa Chumbley, RD
A steakhouse for foodies. Sounds delicious, right? That’s the perfect description for Eddie Merlot’s, a prime-aged steakhouse started in Fort Wayne by founder and well-known wine connoisseur, Bill Humphries. Its success has led to restaurants opening in seven states, with an eighth coming soon. And there are good reasons Eddie Merlot’s enjoys such an excellent reputation. Joseph, General Manager of the 96th Street location, explained to me that Mr. Humphries has no desire for Eddie Merlot’s to be a typical steakhouse. Traditional steakhouses are dark and possibly even a little stuffy. Because a high percentage of restaurant choices are made by
women, he wanted Eddie Merlot’s to have a feminine appeal; soft colors, natural lighting, comfortable seating – a stylish, modern interior paired with sophisticated intimacy. According to Joseph, “Bill Humphries is a visionary. He exhibits an entrepreneurial spirit in every decision he makes. Each manager is empowered to assume ownership of their location, staff, menu, and guests.” It is obvious that Joseph is very proud
Memorable Food + Fine Dining
of his Eddie Merlot’s on 96th Street. He takes a comprehensive approach to minute details so that his restaurant and staff are prepared every night. “I pencil out what I call a ‘plan of attack’ to maximize each server’s strengths, which hopefully results in a smooth evening.” Joseph emphasizes how the chefs and servers really take it from there. “We have so many amazing servers. Guests often specifically request their favorite and we always try to honor those requests.” What is intriguing is that Joseph coaches servers on how to ‘read’ a table and its guests. “That helps the server know what kind of experience his particular group requires. For example, a celebration, an intimate night for two, or a business meeting would each require a different approach. Indy has a lot of choices when it comes to food – especially steakhouses. At Merlot’s we take care of our guests. We don’t want
them to feel like they’re coming to a chain; we want them to feel like they’re coming home.” Joseph also strives to spend time with guests during the evening. “I realize that many people choose Eddie Merlot’s for a special meal to celebrate a life event - and it’s our job to give them exquisite food in a world-class setting so they can ‘make a memory.’ We want them to leave thinking, ‘that was a special event…and I cannot wait to come back’.” “Our menu focuses on the highest-quality meat and seafood, combined with the freshest ingredients. Our broad selection of wine is superb. Two years ago we rolled out a ‘craft beer’ program, so we now serve eight to nine local Indiana beers.” Joseph also assists with the beverage program and ensures every server is trained when it comes to their extensive list of pairings.

After talking to Joseph, I had a chance to sit down with Jerry Myers, executive chef for Eddie Merlot’s, and tap into his passion for cooking at this expert level. Q: Jerry, what made you decide to be a chef? What’s your inspiration? A: I’ve been cooking since second grade. I grew up in a scratch kitchen on southern comfort food. My mother made everything from scratch, and with four older sisters, you either helped cook or did the dishes. Everyone shared the work load. She is the reason I take pride in everything I do. Q: So you knew right away this was your calling? A: No; I first went to school for engineering. I was working in restaurants to put myself through school and realized that the thing I was really passionate about - cooking - was what I should be doing the rest of my life. Q: What do you love most about being an executive chef for Eddie Merlot’s? A: Two things: the ever-changing environment, and being a mentor to other chefs. Eddie Merlot’s gives me both. Q: What is a ‘chef-driven concept’? A: We lean on the talent of corporate chefs to create inspiration and come up with dishes, but then the president and owner decides which of those will go to local menus. Q: What is involved in training for Eddie Merlot’s? A: It’s an 8-week program. Everyone goes through all aspects of every station; that
way we can work together and interchange if need be. It’s very much a family-oriented team approach. Q: Tell us about your menu. A: Our menu is prime-aged beef and seafood. Each cut of prime beef is aged at least 21 days for tenderness and flavor. Everything we do, we do to perfection. The menu changes twice a year and we do seasonal specials as well. We also cater to allergies and specific needs. Our chefs are very well trained in this area; we know this is important to people. Q: What would you suggest a first-timer try? A: Whenever someone asks what cut I’d suggest, I ask them to tell me a little about themselves – it all depends on the person. Right now, no one can go wrong with the Coffee-Crusted Wagyu Strip. It is simply amazing. Q: Okay, so beyond personal preference, educate us on steaks, please! A: Just remember that the magic is in the cut of beef and how it’s cooked. Most of the marbling on a filet mignon - the “queen of steaks”- is on the outside. A rib eye has the marbling throughout, so each bite is tender and like butter. However, the same cut of meat will offer a different flavor profile depending on how long it is cooked. Q: Does your family request that you cook at get-togethers? A: Always. I’m a steak-guy at heart, so I can typically be found grilling the family dinners…and I love every second of it.

PEACE WATER WINERY
It’s All In The Family
What’s even better than enjoying a really good glass of wine after a long day? Knowing that the money you spent on it will, in part, benefit a really good cause.
Peace Water Winery, at 37 West Main Street in downtown Carmel, is the result of the vision, dedication and hard work of the Burton family. Long time Hamilton County residents, Scott and Laura Burton, along with their eight children, decided to open a wine tasting room with a mission and a way to give back. Thus, 50% of their profits are donated to charity. The space is stunningly beautiful, with an urban chic décor. The service, often by Scott himself or his son Jordy, who manages the winery, is knowledgeable and friendly. As the business grows, more and more members of the Burton family appear. And the wine is divine. While Indiana wines can have a reputation for being too sweet or too young, that’s not the case here. All of the wine is bottled in California, with California-grown grapes. Of the eleven wines currently available, standouts include: The “Grateful Red,” selected as 2015 Best Red Wine of the Year from over 2100 wines from around the world at the Indy International Wine Competition) and “Bliss” Sauvignon Blanc, named Best White Wine at the World Wine Championships in Chicago. If you’re not sure which wine to try, opt 40
for a tasting of five wines for ten dollars. Buy a bottle of wine and you’ll receive a token to place in the bucket of your charity of choice. Each child in the Burton family gets to choose which charity to benefit, hence the eight buckets on the wall! While there is no food offered at Peace Water, you can easily have dinner there by nestling into a table, ordering a bottle of wine and then ordering carry-out from Bazbeaux Pizza or Scotty’s Brewhouse. If you’re planning a party or larger private event, they will recommend a caterer to bring in hors d’oeuvres. The Peace Posse “Our Peace Posse (aka wine club) is the heart and soul of the winery,” says Scott Burton. “The members of our wine club sign up and buy one or two cases of wine per year. Every quarter, we have a Pick Up Party, where members come in and pick up their wines. On those nights, we have free food and live music—they’re really fun!” “But I look at this as building a community rather than running a business,” Burton continued. “For example, Peace Water Winery is running the soup kitchen at Sts. Peter and Paul on five Saturdays
in the next year. We are buying and donating all the food, but we need volunteers to help serve the more than 100 homeless and hungry that typically show up. All I have to do is send out an email to our Peace Posse and we have all the volunteers we need! Sip Your Wine al Fresco When warm weather returns, spend an evening on Peace Water’s lovely patio out back, which features live music Friday and Saturday nights. www.peacewaterwinery.com (317)810-1330 Hours: Tuesday-Thursday: 2-9 p.m. Friday: 2-10 p.m. Saturday: 12-10 p.m. Sunday: 12-6 p.m. Written By Karen Kennedy Photography by Cindy Wardlow

Fashion Forecast SPRING 2016
Tired of chilly temps and winter weather? Think SPRING to liven up your spirits and your wardrobe. As Fashion Week unfolded this fall across cities like New York, London and Paris for upcoming Spring 2016, many of the trends seen were an evolution of ideas presented during the 2015 show.
Mesh
Designers retained essential concepts with maybe a little less here or a little more there, and then sent them down the runway. Even though temperatures are cold and gloomy days prevail, it’s time to go into your closet and start visualizing flowers, sheer fabrics, mesh and belts.
Mesh fabric had a place in 2015 and did again during 2016 Fashion Week. Both years featured mesh and netting in individual pieces as well as entire ensembles. Look to see more skin this coming spring.
Written by Jenni Meyers Owner beauty + grace / Carmel City Center www.shopbeautyandgrace.com 46
Bow Belts
Neck-tie width waist belts were also prominent during the most recent Fashion Week runways. It would seem that the previous year’s trend of Judo belts has evolved this year to a narrow bow at the waist to accentuate figures.
Florals
Spring 2016 designers are showing small/ baby blooms in prints used for flowing to fitted dresses. Compared to 2015 where we saw 3D blooms (flowers literally looking like they were coming out of the fabric), this year’s floral prints will be lighter and more subtle.
48
Sheer Fabric
The sheer fabric highlighted in last spring’s season was used mostly to accentuate a bit more leg and to be an alternative to the high slit. For Spring 2016, sheer fabric continues to be center stage but will be seen predominantly in tops and bottoms. In particular, there is also a strong drive by designers to display lots of sheer in black.

A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles, in Just Six Months. (The smile you’ve always wanted)
WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY
I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. As a Dentist, I’ve found that many teens and adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk—when they just don’t have to. People tell me they feel stuck because they don’t want to wear metal braces for years, or they’re concerned that other corrective teeth straightening procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. I’m always looking into the the best technologies and procedures to give my patients the smile they’ve always dreamed about, and I’ve finally found an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution that can give you the smile you’ve always wanted—Six Month Smiles®. Great results in less time than you ever thought possible. Finding cosmetic solutions that fit your lifestyle. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION THE KEY TO A CHILD’S FUTURE! More and more parents are recognizing the importance of a child’s early years and the benefits of early childhood education to a child’s success in elementary school and beyond. As we learn more about a child’s brain development, it’s easy to understand why. Critical brain development takes place before the age of five. Quality preschools utilize the knowledge of how the brain is developing and target specific skills during age appropriate times to help children build critical neural connections. The data and supporting research on the benefits of early childhood education
are so strong that early childhood education and Private Pre-Kindergarten programs have become an even more important part of nation’s future success.
Consider this: the most active time of brain development occurs before age five. During this time children are forming the “electrical framework” of neural connections in their brains at a rate of as much as 700 neural connections every second! As children grow, their brains undergo a use it or lose it type process where the neural connections that get used are strengthened and the connections that are not used are pruned away. This is one of the reasons that early childhood education, like Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten, is so important. The experiences children have with their environment impact the formation of these neural connections. High quality experiences lead to strong neural connections, while limited interactions and experience lead to fewer neural connections in a child’s brain. Quality interactions at an early age help determine how children continue to learn and form relationships, which strongly influences their future success and happiness. As the brain develops during these early childhood years, there are key time periods where children are most receptive to developing specific skills such as language, social-emotional skills and even visual skills. This is one of the many reasons that quality preschools with research based, age appropriate curriculums can be so beneficial for children. Trained Pre-Kindergarten teachers 76
are implementing the right curriculum at the right age. These teachers are utilizing a balance of the latest research on child initiated and teacher directed teaching techniques, serve and return discussion techniques and tailoring instruction to reach each child in the unique ways that they learn best. In addition to building brain infrastructure, these techniques spark children’s interests, trigger their curiosity and establish both self-confidence and a love for learning. Numerous research studies have shown the benefits of quality early childhood education programs. As a result, increasing access to quality Pre-Kindergarten programs has become a hot political topic among cities, states and even among presidential hopefuls. Many states, including Indiana, have already begun funding private Pre-Kindergarten programs because of the positive impact on young children’s futures. Most of these PreKindergarten funding programs are currently targeted where the need for early involvement is greatest and access is the lowest.
It’s important to know the impact of early experiences on a child’s brain development. The right nurturing guidance during key periods of a child’s development helps develop his compassion, confidence and love of learning, in addition to providing a strong academic foundation. These capabilities are easy to take for granted, but can make all the difference in how children respond to school and life beyond the classroom.

DIVORCE
PARENTING TIME DURING THE HOLIDAYS The holiday season can be a difficult time if you are going through a divorce or are just recently divorced. This is especially true for young children. It is therefore important to know what the co-parenting schedule will be and to deal with issues that may arise before they turn into substantial and potentially volatile disputes.
THE GUIDELINES
If your divorce decree or preliminary order indicates that you will operate under the Holiday provisions of the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines, then the first step is to be certain that you have read these provisions and understand how they divide the holiday periods in question. A considerable amount of misunderstanding can be avoided if both parties review the Guidelines; discussions about variations can then start from common ground. If parties cannot
agree, however, and the decree establishes the provisions in the Guidelines as the default schedule, both sides will also know what the consequences will be. If an agreement is reached, make sure it clearly includes times and dates. Stick to whatever schedule you agree upon and be considerate when dropping off and picking up the children. Understand that moments with both families are precious for them and that scheduling delays can result in even bigger conflicts.
CONSIDER FAMILY TRADITIONS
Holiday traditions are one thing children can look forward to even during difficult times. If your family has favorite holiday rituals, make every effort to continue them. If the divorce or separation is recent, and you believe children may experience difficulty, consider a vacation or begin a new, fun family tradition that they can get excited about. Historically, 79
you should therefore make every effort to respect the co-parenting relationship. Strive to keep your children’s best interests as your top priority.
COORDINATE GIFT-GIVING.
for instance, if your family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve and the other parent’s family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Day, plan to create a schedule that allows the children to participate in both each and every year. When holiday plans are identical, it may make sense to alternate yearly visits rather than to break each period into equal parts. This way, children are able to enjoy celebrations in both homes on an equitable basis over a period of time. Alternating holidays on an annual basis can also create more relaxing experiences as opposed to the stress involved with coordinating schedules.
COMMUNICATE
If the children are not with you for the holidays, call them, send cards and/ or emails. Consider creating your own family celebration either before or after the actual holiday. Children love celebrations and gifts, regardless of the day and time. Conversely, if the children are spending the holiday with you, you should encourage and allow them to speak with the other parent. If the children are too young to call on their own, help them make or receive a call, and always give the children and the other parent a quiet moment together.
PUT THE CHILDREN FIRST
No matter how challenging your relationship is with your children’s father/ mother, please remember that he/she is the parent of your children, and that 80
Ask the other parent what he/she plans on giving the children so that you can purchase your gifts accordingly. Help your children make holiday cards to personalize their feelings for both mom and dad. You can also offer to take your children shopping to buy presents for the other parent. For young children especially, holidays are exciting times and they want to give as much as they want to receive. Put personal feelings aside, knowing that building healthy and positive relationships between parents creates a winning situation for the entire family. Remember that your former partner will be in your life long after the children are grown, so the more you are able to effectively communicate and co-parent, the easier the transition will be on you and your children.
