Our feature this month on Carmel’s number one status in CNN Money’s “America’s Best Places to Live” prompted some memories of how it used to be. We moved here in 1974 with one infant and a hyperactive dog, so felt good schools and a fenced yard were priorities. We got the first part anyway, and since there was so much country in Carmel, the dog just roamed. Living way out off 116th Street close to the White River meant that trips to the grocery involved logistics and planning. With one Marsh and one O’Malia’s, choices might have been easy but getting there took time. Main Street wasn’t exactly buzzing either, unless you counted the hedge trimmers you could buy at White’s Ace Hardware. Along with a barber shop and a small theater, that was pretty much all she wrote. Corn fields stretched forever and hitting a night spot meant heading south to Indianapolis. Carmel was at the end of the road on the way out of town. Fast forward to now and the differences are hard to comprehend. For a profile of our new, improved city, read “We’re Number One.” There’s more to come in upcoming issues with parts two, three and four on “Living in Carmel.” This topic was too big to cover in only one article. As you prepare for the upcoming months, don’t miss “Holiday Decorating in Kid Style” for clever tips to get the younger set involved. After they’ve decked the halls, treat the entire family to a visit at one of the restaurants featured in “What’s New in Dining.” We loved sampling the dishes and who cares about calories? In CNN Money Magazine’s September issue, Carmel had been named the #1 best place to live in America for 2012 with a population between 50,000 – 300,000. To quote the article, “…this formerly sleepy burb – which clocked in at No. 14 on our list two years ago – has transformed itself into the ideal place to work and play.” According to the Carmel Chamber of Commerce, “Money Magazine staff members knew we were developing a vibrant walkable community because of earlier visits, but it was the completion of many projects, the growth of urban areas, the thriving business community and the liveliness of the Arts & Design District and City Center that helped move us into number one.”

How CNN Money picked Carmel as its

top city was the result of hard data and reporting. They started with 744 U.S. towns whose population fell within the targeted range and cut them down to 401 based on the following criteria: delete places whose median family income was more than 200% or less than 85% of the state average, as well as those with more than 95% of one race, and those with poor education and crime scores. To reach a total of 360 candidates, retirement communities and towns with major job losses were eliminated, while the remainder were picked based on job growth, home affordability, school quality, health care, arts and leisure, safety and “several ease-of-living” measures. 100 towns were then chosen after economic factors plus jobs, housing and happiness were evaluated. Each one of these 100 towns was visited and residents interviewed “to assess traffic, parks and gathering places, and consider intangibles like community spirit.” The winner was selected from a final pool of 29.

Welcome to Sophia Square!

Located at the corner of Main Street and the Monon Greenway, this stunning multi-use facility blends shopping, dining, a state-of-the-art workout facility and a luxury spa with a collection of premium apartments. It’s like a slice of New York has arrived to add a little razzamatazz to Main Street. We visited this summer and sat down for a conversation with Alison Melton, Real Estate Services, to find out how it all came to be. The name “Sophia Square” sounds very cosmopolitan. What was its genesis? Sophia means wisdom in Latin and is also the name of Ersal Ozdemir’s daughter. Ersal is the developer of Sophia Square. Because of its personal relevance and origin, the name seemed like a perfect fit for this European style development.

What was the inspiration behind its construction? Keystone wanted to create a well-designed structure that would improve the overall quality of living for its tenants while contributing to the surrounding area. The central location,

How many apartments are available in Sophia Square? How successful have rentals been and what are the demographics of its residents? There are a total of 202 apartments in Sophia Square which are currently 97% leased. Four of these are three bedroom/three bath units, while the rest are two bedroom/two bath or one bedroom/one bath units. All are named after European locales in keeping with its architecture. 18

The Monon Greenway has been fantastic for residents who enjoy walking, running, biking and skating on a designated safe path. One Of A Kind Beauchamp antiques Interview by Jackie Holloway Once you’ve found Beauchamp Antiques, it can easily become a favorite haunt. Located on over 45 acres in Westfield, it sits at the end of a scenic drive that meanders through woods, pastures and over streams with perhaps a few deer along the way. Is this Indiana? It’s so darn picturesque. But wait until you step inside the shop; that’s when your trip really gets exciting. It was here on a spectacular fall day that I recently sat down with Bob Beauchamp

and his manager Guy Markusfeld to talk about their business. Michelle, Bob’s wife and buying partner, joined us briefly as well.

When did Beauchamp Antiques open? Bob: It was in downtown Indy over 40 years ago that I opened my first shop on East 10th Street. There was a concentration of antique stores in that area selling everything from vintage clothes to nice antiques. I actually started out in 1969 buying antique brass beds from rural areas throughout the Midwest and restoring them for clients. In 1976 I moved to 14th and Alabama in the Old Northside Historic District before expanding to my current location in 1983.

How did you establish contacts in Europe for your buying trips? Bob: It did take several trips to discover the out-of-the way wholesale dealers who work in any given area, but gradually we discovered the best wholesale sources, the dealers who actually do house calls and estate buying. We became well known as buyers and got lots of references. It takes time to find high quality merchandise at fair prices and it’s a challenge to blend artistry with business sense. I pass on 90% of the merchandise that is offered to me.

Guy: Occasionally we have clients who travel on their own to the Paris flea markets, only to find the piece they loved and purchased is falling apart when they receive it. So much more is involved than looking for dovetails and wooden pegs. Authenticity and age can be challenging even for experts, but shipping is an art in itself. Our merchandise comes by semitrailer size shipping containers. It pays to supervise how items are packed and Bob watches every step of the way.

Where are your favorite locales when you go abroad? Bob: France and England have the market cornered on anything ‘country.’ Usually I’ll head north of Paris into more rural areas to find unique pieces, then travel on into Belgium and work our way to Holland. We stop at markets and sources all along the way. We also love visiting Italy; the people are great and the food is so fresh and delicious. Michelle: I remember traveling to Belgium in April 2010. Of course that’s when the volcano in Iceland erupted and we were stuck in a small town for a week. That turned into a very pleasant detour because Bob and I had filled the container and finished shopping, so we had time to visit museums and eat out in nice restaurants every meal. We became known as the “Ash Cloud” people.

You’ve talked about shopping in Europe. Do you also restore pieces that people already own? Guy: We have done and still do a lot of top shelf restoration by staying true to the age of the piece. Our approach stresses ‘restoration, conservation and preservation.’ Once upon a time it was strip and refinish, but people now want to retain the ageless appeal and patina that comes with antiquity. We have three expert craftsmen at Beauchamp Antiques that specialize in restoration. Matt Parker is the Clockmaker, and Eugene Dubnitsky and Ryan Henry specialize in Furniture Restoration. Bob: Between us we have almost 150 years of experience. Michelle: Wait, counting me there’s well over 150 years. (An iPhone confirms the tally and Michelle heads off to babysit with grandchildren.)

What do you each like best about your careers?

Bob: It sounds simple but I’m happiest when I’m buying and selling antiques, I love the search for fine pieces and I love finding that piece a new home and owner. It’s also great not being on the clock. The biggest pleasure involves the risks, joys and daily conflicts of owning a large, multi-layered business. Every day I say thank you for such a rewarding business life, one that is still growing and changing. For instance, I never dreamed that I would spend a sizeable portion of each day on the computer. We have a very robust website – www. beauchampantiques.com – that has been instrumental in growing our business nationally and internationally. Guy: Since I live next door to the property, I love the commute. Seriously though, there is a lot of gratification that goes along with placing beautiful antiques in people’s homes. Our pieces are unique hand-crafted 18th and 19th Century European antiques. The quality of construction ensures centuries of future use, enjoyment and value. If we’ve 80

done our jobs correctly, then our clients’ lives are enriched as well. Bob: And we make sure our clients stay satisfied; customer service is paramount to our success. This is where I tell my part of the story. Years ago we needed something to go between a couch and an entry. There was a perfect trunk (or, as it’s known in the trade, coffer) sitting at Beauchamps that must have an amazing history; it came from the Flemish region of Belgium and dated to around 1680. After delivery the next day, the first thing I did was carefully put the key inside, close the top and….permanently locked it. How embarrassing, but not a problem. Someone came out immediately, maybe it was Ryan, and found one from a series of ancient keys to unlock the chest. Eureka! And we lived happily ever after. Eye Design Unless I’m seated in a dark theater squinting at the screen, I’ve always avoided putting on a pair of eyeglasses. Looking around at today’s fashionistas convinced me it’s time to dump that particular prejudice and invest in chic eyewear. Armed with a prescription, I headed to Barrett Eye Care in downtown Carmel. Here’s what I learned about picking out frames. First, it helps to know what goes into making the right selection. Jim Bridenstine, the optician at Barrett with over 40 years of experience, kindly walked me through the basics. “Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want, which may or may not be correct. Others have no idea. In both cases, the major considerations are face shape, skin tone, personal taste and budget. With over 300 styles to choose from, I guarantee we’ll come up with one that works.” Where to start? Jim suggested that we look at shapes. “Eyewear should ideally contrast with your facial structure and be in scale with its size. To make a round face appear thinner, try narrow glasses with a rectangular design. An oval’s natural balance should be emphasized with frames that are as wide as or even wider than the broadest part of the face and not be too deep or too narrow. Square faces, on the other hand, need frames that soften the angles with more width than depth. Above all, it’s important not to overpower small features with large frames or ‘lose’ frames that are too small on a bigger face.” Okay, I’ve got the shape. Now what about color? According to Jim, “hair and skin tone offer the best clues as to what will work best for you. There are so

many variations in eye color that unless you want to emphasize blue eyes with blue frames, they are considered a secondary element. Most of us in the Midwest have ‘cool’ complexions that are blue-based rather than the somewhat rarer yellow-based ‘warm’ ones. Colors that work well with cool complexions are silver, black, plum, pink and tortoise. Warm skin looks good in golden tones such as camel and khaki as well as fire engine red, copper or blue.” When it comes to style, are fashion trends important or should it be a more personal statement? “Well, that also depends on your budget,” Jim comments. “If you can afford to add to your inventory every year, then we’d love to help you pick out the latest. Most of us, though, stick to what we’re comfortable with. If your look is classic, eyewear choices will favor subtle shapes and colors. ‘Geek chic,’ on the other hand, is back after decades of dust with bold, black frames. Rimless glasses have become very popular with every age group. If you know your tastes, style is easy.” Something that has come to the computer near you is a ‘virtual mirror.’ Jim recommended that I read an article about this innovation in the making. Developed by Marc Ecko, ‘Virtual Try-On’ is a program that allows interactive fitting with Ecko eyewear. To quote, he is attempting to make the “face-to-screen as effective as the face-to-face” when it comes to choosing glasses. “It isn’t intended to replace mom and pop and it’s only quirky if you’re nostalgic about mirrors. It is real technology and it’s here to stay. It’s not quite Stanley Kubrick time yet… we still need humans to drive that visceral emotional connection. You can’t program that!” Yet one more foray into cutting edge technology. Me, I’ll take the live shopping experience any day.

Deer in the Headlights

According to Car-Accidents.com, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) reports there are approximately 1.5 million car crashes each year as a result of deer. Deer are especially active during fall, which coincides with their mating season. Although we cannot stop them from entering roadways at inopportune times, there are steps we can take to diminish the chance of having an accident if a deer should cross our path while driving.

Be vigilant while driving in wooded areas. Although deer can be found almost anywhere, city or suburb, it is

important to be extra cautious when driving through heavily wooded areas. Look on the side of the road for the reflection of their eyes in your headlights.

Use high beams whenever possible. Using high beams can help better illuminate deer and also make it easier to see the reflection in their eyes as discussed in tip #1. Be cautious with high beams though. If a deer does cross your path, it may freeze in your headlights. Be sure to turn them off quickly and beep your horn to help scare the deer away.

Watch for deer crossing signs. When you see a deer crossing sign be sure to pay even more attention to your surroundings. These signs are placed at well-known deer crossing paths and indicate an increased likelihood of coming across deer in a posted area.

Drive in the center lane whenever possible. If you are travelling down a multi-lane road, be sure to stay in the center lane as much as you can. This will give you just a little more reaction time if a deer darts in front of your vehicle. If on a single lane road, then stay as close to the center line as is safely possible.

Do not swerve. If a deer does come out at you from the side of the road, be sure to hit the brakes and avoid swerving. Deer will typically move and if you swerve you may put yourself right back into its path. Also, sharp turns can increase the likelihood of losing control of the vehicle and causing an accident with another vehicle, tree, etc. Watch for relatives. If you see one deer, rest assured there are more nearby. If a deer does jump in front of you, be on the lookout for others that could cross your path as well. Deer do not travel alone. This is another reason swerving is a bad idea. Swerving to avoid one deer may put you in the path of another. Deer are one of the animals most dangerous to man because they cause so many auto accidents. Taking simple precautions can be the difference between having an accident with a deer and almost having an accident with a deer. There are products out there such as deer whistles, which when attached to your car emit a high-pitched whistle that notify deer of your oncoming vehicle. There are conflicting reports as to their effectiveness, however. Just be sure to take all necessary precautions when driving, especially at dawn or dusk, when deer traffic is highest. Are there any other safety measures you can add to my list? Let me know how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve avoided a close call with a deer.

Carmel clay veterans memorial The plaza was established by the Carmel Clay Memorial Corporation to create a place to honor veterans.
