The ‘new’ city of Westfield is quickly taking hold. Grand Park, Grand Junction, new hotels and restaurants, the indoor sports complex and much more…there’s no limit to its expansion. Westfield City Magazine now has over 100 distribution locations in the city alone and, in addition, you’ll find the entire magazine inside Carmel City Magazine. That means Carmel residents are becoming more aware of the dramatic changes to their ‘sister’ city up north. And need I mention that there is a little road construction going on? We can all look forward to the time when commutes will be faster and more convenient…some day in a not-toodistant future.

DERBY RACING IN WESTFIELD
Written by Melissa Purcell | Photographs by Beth Maier Photography
Nothing feels as good as cheering your team on to victory – unless it’s cheering on your favorite car in a derby race! The tradition of soap box racing spans generations, which is something to keep in mind as Westfield’s 7th Annual Grand Junction Derby takes off on October 3rd. In this popular event, contestants can use kits or design their own cars as folks did in the earlier days of derby racing. Westfield’s race traces its roots to the All-American Soap Box Derby (AASBD), which began in 1933 with Myron Scott of the Dayton Daily News. After witnessing a group of boys race cars assembled from old crates and wagon wheels, Scott organized a competition for 19 boys. Local response was so enthusiastic that it resulted in an even bigger meet the following year with a cash prize and 362 contestants. The event moved to Akron, OH in 1935 and its popularity attracted such large crowds that Chevrolet became its sponsor. Up to 70,000 spectators would line the streets to watch the championships each year. Westfield’s race, while not as big, is certainly entertaining. The course is set up along Union Street. A large
WCM - 6
truck with a ramp sits at the corner of Union and Ind. 32, providing the perfect launch pad for the vehicles. Cars go south on Union, getting a little push from their “pit crew” if they can’t quite make it to the finish line. Although most of the racers in the Grand Junction Derby are in it just for fun, two Westfield residents have actually taken their interest much farther. Kat and Natalie Cole, both graduates of Westfield High School, became interested in Soap Box Derby racing while growing up and looking at pictures with their dad, David. Turns out the Cole family already had three generations of derby racers, and the sisters became the fourth. They are among several Westfield families who inherited a love of racing from their ancestors. Grandpa Philip Cole started things out in the 1950s. David and his sister raced in the late 1970s. Even their uncles on Mom’s side, Brad and Scott Cooper, loved to compete. While the Cole girls didn’t win in Westfield, they continued to pursue racing in AASBD. Their goal was to go all the way to the World Championships. Kat was the more successful of the two, making it to World Championships in Akron four times and accumulating about 30 wins. Natalie
found herself always coming in second, but finally won when she was sixteen and made it to World Championships herself. This struggle, while frustrating, taught Natalie a lot about sportsmanship and how to be a good loser. Their mom Jessica explained that with the losses were tears. “We let her have those tears. Then it was, ‘Okay, it’s just a race. Now let’s pack up.” Natalie’s resilience inspired other families, who used her as an example of how perseverance can pay off in the long run. In addition, over the years both girls gained a lot of practical knowledge from racing. They learned about tools while assembling their cars, as well as how to recognize problems or strange noises in the car. David elaborated, “Natalie could always tell if the steering was tight. They both were able to identify a sound or a feel to the car that told them something was off.” This kind of dedication could pay off for those aged 8 and over who enter the Westfield race. The bracketed heats will take place on October 3rd from 3 – 7:00 p.m. or until winners are declared. There are two categories
– Competitive and Creative – with the creative drivers encouraged to wear costumes that develop a theme between car and driver. That competition will take place along “Gasoline Alley.” Prior to the main races, there is a tricycle race for kids aged 2 – 7. Indy racecar driver Derek Daly will once again be presenting awards to winners in each division along with a People’s Choice Award. According to Kelley Wells with the City of Westfield, “This year we are adding the “Street Festival” component. Vendors will be selling fall foods and local artisans will offer vintage/unique collectibles. A kids’ area makes its return with activities, inflatables, balloons and face painting, while adults can enjoy a beer garden on tap. After the race Tom Wright & Friends will provide live music.” You can learn more about the Annual Grand Junction Derby and street festival by following the event on their webpage at https://grandjunctionderby.wordpress.com/. Any questions about the event can be directed to the sponsor, Westfield Parks and Recreation, at parksinfo@westfield.in.gov.

Treasure Trove BEAUCHAMP ANTIQUES Interview by Jackie Holloway Once you’ve found Beauchamp Antiques, it can easily become a favorite haunt. Located on over 45 acres in Westfield, it sits at the end of a scenic drive that meanders through woods, pastures and over streams with perhaps a few deer along the way. Is this Indiana? It’s so darn picturesque. But wait until you step inside the shop; that’s when your trip really gets exciting.
It was here on a spectacular fall day that I recently sat down with Bob Beauchamp and his manager Guy Markusfeld to talk about their business. Michelle, Bob’s wife and buying partner, joined us briefly as well.
When did Beauchamp Antiques open? Bob: It was in downtown Indy over 45 years ago that I opened my first shop on East 10th Street. There was a concentration of antique stores in that area selling everything from vintage clothes to nice antiques. I actually started out in 1969 buying antique brass beds from rural areas throughout the Midwest and restoring them for clients. In 1976 I moved to 14th and Alabama in the Old Northside Historic District before expanding to my current location in 1983.
How did you establish contacts in Europe for your buying trips? Bob: It did take several trips to discover the out-of-the way wholesale dealers who work in any given area, but gradually we discovered the best wholesale sources, the dealers who actually do house calls and estate buying. We became well known as buyers and got lots of references. It takes time to find high quality merchandise at fair prices and it’s a challenge to blend artistry with business sense. I pass on 90% of the merchandise that is offered to me.
WCM - 12
Guy: Occasionally we have clients who travel on their own to the Paris flea markets, only to find the piece they loved and purchased is falling apart when they receive it. So much more is involved than looking for dovetails and wooden pegs. Authenticity and age can be challenging even for experts, but shipping is an art in itself. Our merchandise comes by semi-trailer size shipping containers. It pays to supervise how items are packed and Bob watches every step of the way.
Where are your favorite locales when you go abroad? Bob: France and England have the market cornered on anything ‘country.’ Usually I’ll head north of Paris into more rural areas to find unique pieces, then travel on into Belgium and work our way to Holland. We stop at markets and sources all along the way. We also love visiting Italy; the people are great and the food is so fresh and delicious. Michelle: I remember traveling to Belgium in April 2010. Of course that’s when the volcano in Iceland erupted and we were stuck in a small town for a week. That turned into a very pleasant detour because Bob and I had filled the container and finished shopping, so we had time to visit museums and eat out in nice restaurants every meal. We became known as the “Ash Cloud” people.

You’ve talked about shopping in Europe. Do you also restore pieces that people already own?
enjoyment and value. If we’ve done our jobs correctly, then our clients’ lives are enriched as well.
Guy: We have done and still do a lot of top shelf restoration by staying true to the age of the piece. Our approach stresses ‘restoration, conservation and preservation.’ Once upon a time it was strip and refinish, but people now want to retain the ageless appeal and patina that comes with antiquity. We have three expert craftsmen at Beauchamp Antiques that specialize in restoration. Matt Parker is the Clockmaker, and Eugene Dubnitsky and Ryan Henry specialize in Furniture Restoration.
Bob: And we make sure our clients stay satisfied; customer service is paramount to our success.
Bob: Between us we have almost 150 years of experience. Michelle: Wait, counting me there’s well over 150 years. (An iPhone confirms the tally and Michelle heads off to babysit with grandchildren.)
What do you each like best about your careers? Bob: It sounds simple but I’m happiest when I’m buying and selling antiques, I love the search for fine pieces and I love finding that piece a new home and owner. It’s also great not being on the clock. The biggest pleasure involves the risks, joys and daily conflicts of owning a large, multi-layered business. Every day I say thank you for such a rewarding business life, one that is still growing and changing. For instance, I never dreamed that I would spend a sizeable portion of each day on the computer. We have a very robust website – www. beauchampantiques.com – that has been instrumental in growing our business nationally and internationally. Guy: Since I live next door to the property, I love the commute. Seriously though, there is a lot of gratification that goes along with placing beautiful antiques in people’s homes. Our pieces are unique hand-crafted 18th and 19th Century European antiques. The quality of construction ensures centuries of future use, WCM - 14
This is where I tell my part of the story. Years ago we needed something to go between a couch and an entry. There was a perfect trunk (or, as it’s known in the trade, coffer) sitting at Beauchamps that must have an amazing history; it came from the Flemish region of Belgium and dated to around 1680. After delivery the next day, the first thing I did was carefully put the key inside, close the top and….permanently lock it. How embarrassing, but not a problem. Someone came out immediately, maybe it was Ryan, and found one from a series of ancient keys to unlock the chest. Eureka! And we lived happily ever after.
