Letter from the Publisher
The ‘new’ city of Westfield is quickly taking hold. Grand Park, Grand Junction, new hotels and restaurants, the indoor sports complex and much more…there’s no limit to its expansion. Westfield City Magazine now has over 100 distribution locations in the city alone and, in addition, you’ll find the entire magazine inside Carmel City Magazine. That means Carmel residents are becoming more aware of the dramatic changes to their ‘sister’ city up north. And need I mention that there is a little road construction going on? We can all look forward to the time when commutes will be faster and more convenient…some day in a not-toodistant future.
Please check out www.WestfieldCityMagazine.com for updates on all things Westfield. You can also sign up for our free weekly E-Newsletters for special events and money saving offers from our advertisers. The Westfield City Magazine is proud to be a part of the dynamic Westfield community and hope you enjoy reading our publication. We’d love to hear from our readers so we can better serve you. TIM’S SHOOTING ACADEMY Written by Melissa Purcell
There’s nothing like the rest and relaxation of retirement to prompt the opening of a new business. That’s exactly how Tim’s Shooting Academy, a public shooting range and store in Westfield, came to be. After retiring from a construction career, it wasn’t long before Tim Tomich was ready for something new. The idea of the academy stemmed from Tim’s interest in guns when he learned to hunt with his father at the age of twelve. “My dad belonged to a Rod and Gun Club. We had a former Army instructor who took us out 3-4 weeks in a row. I learned to shoot one cartridge at a time…that’s how serious he was.”
This lifelong interest, along with some family prompting, led to opening the public shooting range he runs with his wife Faith. Along with his fascination with firearms, Tim realizes safety is paramount. In fact, the Academy’s mission statement says they are ‘focused on safety and education.’ With security in mind, the building itself was built with 10 inch walls of reinforced concrete. The stall divider in each shooting stall can withstand a 44 magnum shot at point blank range. New visitors must watch a safety video before entering the range. Precautions are taken in the range to make sure guns are contained and other shooters are protected. Range Safety Officers are always available. In an era of debate over gun control, Tim feels the conversation is beneficial. As people become aware of safety issues, Tim thinks more will take advantage of classes to become responsible gun owners themselves. He refers to increased burglaries in the greater Indianapolis area. “People realize dangers are right in their back yard. They can head straight up 31 to Tim’s and alleviate some of these concerns. Only through education and practice can an owner become more comfortable and confident.” To ensure patrons’ needs are met, Tim’s focuses on education. They offer several classes, such as NRA and personal Basic Pistol, Conceal Carry, and Handgun Skills and Advanced Tactics courses as well as Individual Instruction classes for all levels of shooters. Trainers are NRA certified and most are range employees. Guy Relford, a Second Amendment attorney from Carmel, teaches a class on Legalese of Indiana that covers rights of a homeowner in the home and in the driveway. For new shooters, Tim encourages private instruction. “I can’t emphasize private lessons enough for beginner
shooters. In a large class it’s harder to get one-on-one time and there aren’t as many practice rounds. It’s a good way to start.” Regardless of the type of instruction chosen, Tim’s always offers personal attention. “It’s about holding each firearm, testing it, and finding the right one for you.” This focus extends to women becoming gun handlers. Tim’s Shooting Academy is home to the Hamilton County Chapter for the Well-Armed Woman which meets twice a month, generally hosts a guest speaker and is followed by range time for participants. Accommodating a variety of customers, Tim’s offers a fullservice firearms store that includes handguns and rifles, eye and ear protection, targets, ammunition and accessories. A large inventory of rental guns allows clients to find the appropriate firearm for them. As for ammunition, in-house selection is top rate at a very competitive price. “Our prices are competitive with big box stores,” Tim states, “but we’re better able to keep a good supply of ammunition on hand for customer use.” Since Tim’s is a shooting range, they are more able to get hard to find ammunition and nearly always have common calibers in stock. The purpose of going to a range varies, but for those who like to go frequently, purchasing a yearly membership is a great option. Benefits include the ability to call for reservations, allowing an automatic place in front of the line on busy
days. “We’re not unlike a golf course. We have more openings during the week, but weekends get really busy.” The academy has hosted shooting leagues, as well as competitions like the USPSA U.S. Pistol and Glock GSSF Sports Shooting Foundation competition. More information on competitions can be seen on their website. With Tim being a longtime Westfield resident, it’s no wonder the business is succeeding. Tim has built a great relationship with the city and other businesses. With large weekend crowds, he refers people to nearby restaurants and activities after shooting. It’s all about supporting the nearby communities. Tim’s Shooting Academy is proud to partner with outstanding organizations such as the National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Rifle Association, Tactical Firearms Training, Nalco Gunsmithing and others to help them serve their customers. Tim himself has been a gun enthusiast for over 40 years. This passion shows as he and his staff strive to meet the needs of customers by keeping them safe, teaching shooting skills and sharing the joy of shooting. Eventually, Tim would like to add another location or two. Looks like he’s got his target well in sight. Tim’s Shooting Academy 17777 Commerce Drive, Westfield, IN www.timsshootingacademy.com

Smoked Chicken Spinach Salad
Charleston’s FINE FOODS, FAMILY FRIENDLY By Karen Kennedy
“Our biggest advertisement is our food,” said proprietor Bob Taylor. “We just put out the best food we can with the best service we can provide every day, and let the customers take it from there.”
Charleston’s is old school fine dining. The gracious and knowledgeable staff moves carefully and purposefully through the cavernous, 250-seat dining room, which is dimly lit and decorated in dark hues.
Truer words were never spoken, and to use that analogy, the prime Delmonico steak has the impact of a billboard in Times Square, eliciting “wows” all around. And every other dish on the menu is presented with the same painstaking care.
Fresh fish is flown in daily, and while selections rotate, the Short Smoked Salmon is a standard on the menu, and is melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Charleston’s is open for lunch and dinner seven days, as follows: Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Carmel/Westfield location has been on the scene since 1999. The latter has sometimes been tricky to get to – fronting the strip mall that houses Best Buy and Barnes and Noble, it’s easy to spot from the highway, but it’s not always so easy to end up in the right parking lot! After several years of US 31 construction, there are finally direct access ramps off of both US 31 and 151st Street, which makes it much more convenient to slip in and enjoy their delicious food, at either lunch or dinner time. Everything is made from scratch, and according to Taylor, the same

employee has been making their sauces and dressings since they opened the doors 16 years ago. Charleston’s is famous for their house-smoked Barbeque Baby Back Ribs and there aren’t too many places anymore where you can get a really good Oven Roasted Half Chicken or Slow Roasted Prime Rib. This is a great place for a business lunch or dinner. But lest you think that Charleston’s is too upscale for the whole family, rest assured that youngsters are welcome, portions are generous, everything on the menu is incredibly reasonably priced and the
desserts are phenomenal. Visitors from Grand Park are finding that it’s a perfect spot for a post-game celebration. Charleston’s has a great bar for appetizers and drinks, and a small wine list with carefully selected boutique wines, again, very reasonably priced. Standouts on the list on our last visit included Angeline Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudline Pinot Noir and Catena Malbec, all amazing values in the $30.00 per bottle range. Tap beers include locals Sun King and Upland.
