Letter from the Publisher

The ‘new’ city of Westfield is quickly taking hold. Grand Park, Grand Junction, new hotels and restaurants, the indoor sports complex and much more…there’s no limit to its expansion. Westfield City Magazine now has over 100 distribution locations in the city alone and, in addition, you’ll find the entire magazine inside Carmel City Magazine. That means Carmel residents are becoming more aware of the dramatic changes to their ‘sister’ city up north. And need I mention that there is a little road construction going on? We can all look forward to the time when commutes will be faster and more convenient…some day in a not-toodistant future.

Please check out www.WestfieldCityMagazine.com for updates on all things Westfield. The Italian House on Park By Melissa Purcell

What’s better than a quaint, old house? A quaint old house that serves Italian food! Nestled in the oldest area in Westfield, the pungent smells of tomato and garlic will entice you right into The Italian House on Park. The house at 219 Park Street is actually what inspired the idea for a restaurant. Scott Wolf and his wife Nyla spotted the property and purchased it after deciding it would make an excellent spot to dine. A look inside swayed the decision to Italian.

Open since September, the restaurant seats 60 and includes an eat-in bar. Its dĂŠcor is intimate and homey. The gentle lighting is relaxing, with a fireplace adding to the ambiance. Arched doorways, stained glass and high ceilings decorated with Italian flare add to the welcoming atmosphere. The menu is subject to change depending on customer demand.

Appetizer and entree specials are offered daily and may be added to the permanent menu if successful, as in the case of the calamari. The menu is full of authentic Italian fare with favorites, according to General Manager Jim Nethercott, being the Lasagna, the Sea Scallops, and the Penne Alla Vodka. For those wanting a variation from Italian cuisine, the menu features Bistecca, a rib eye dinner, and Filetto beef tenderloin.

Nethercott currently takes care of scheduling, training, and costs for the restaurant, and fortunately was able to help in planning the opening and remodeling. Part of that included choosing a menu that offers authentic Italian cuisine, but with a twist. Developing something unique engaged the talents of Chef Felipe Lopez, who brought his culinary degree and experience with Napoli Villa in Indianapolis to the kitchen at The Italian House. WCM - 7

Filet-De-Salmon

“He would select recipes based on his experience and research. Then he, along with the Wolfs and I would sample the selections, then decide if it would be added to the menu. Through this process we finally came up with the current offerings,” said Nethercott. New to Westfield in his role as manager of The Italian House, Nethercott is embracing the community. “We look forward to being a part of Westfield,” stated Nethercott. “We are really excited to be here as the city continues to grow.”

The Italian House plans to be active in the community participating in events such as Westfield’s Party on the Patio events, food tastings and chamber meetings. Catering is also being offered. Off-site catering is available but most of it will be confined to the Backyard Bar, which will hold 50 additional patrons. This will be an excellent place to hold holiday parties and family gatherings for local residents and businesses. The Backyard Bar, fully enclosed and fully operational, will serve food to patrons on the patio beginning this spring. Patrons will be able to enjoy outside entertainment and a fire pit surrouned with comfortable seating areas. The Italian House on Park plans to reach out to the

Panna Cotta

community through a wine tasting in the Backyard Bar on March 23rd from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is the first of many events coming up throughout 2016. Check out our web site www. theitalianhouseonpark.com and sign up for our mailing list to be notified of upcoming events. The wine list at the restaurant offers mainly Italian wines, along with some Spanish and California selections. The staff is trained to help patrons match wines to the various menu items. So far, business is brisk at The Italian House. Fridays and Saturday nights are always full. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on the weekends. While the restaurant’s current focus is on locals and Hamilton County residents, Nethercott’s goal is for The

Italian House to continue to grow and become a city-wide destination. “We want to be the first on the list when clients pick a restaurant for date night, family gathering, girls’ night out or just a good meal with friends. The Italian House on Park should be the restaurant people think of when they want to do something special.” With that in mind, extended hours and a possible lunch menu may be considered. For now, the restaurant is open Friday and Saturday from 4-11 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday, 4-10 p.m. So, the next time you’re in the mood for some tasty Italian cuisine, follow the tantalizing aromas to the house that inspired it all – The Italian House on Park.

LOC AL HIGH SC HOOL C ADDIES W I N C H I C K E VA N S S C H O L A R S H I P This February 3rd, eleven Hoosier high school seniors gathered at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel for their final interviews in hopes of receiving a full college tuition and housing scholarship valued at $80,000 over four years. The final round of interviews were held to determine who would be awarded the coveted Chick Evans Scholarship sponsored by the Western Golf Association. Following the meeting, each of the 11 candidates were awarded the scholarship. With the 2016 BMW Championship returning to Crooked Stick this September 6 - 11, this story is particularly relevant, since all BMW tournament proceeds will benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation. Westfield resident Ethan Parsley, who attends Westfield High School and caddies at Wood Wind Golf Club, and Carmel resident Hayden Bauschka, who attends Carmel High School and caddies at Prairie View Golf Club, are among those who received a scholarship. Indiana winners will attend one of 14 Scholarship Houses across the country. Each recipient is a caddie with a unique story to tell, reflecting the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record; excellent academics; demonstrated financial need; and outstanding character. At the Selection Meeting, WGA directors, Evans Scholars alumni and other Program supporters interviewed each of the nominees. Carmel resident Jackson Schuette, current Evans Scholar who received the Scholarship in 2012 (when the BMW was last played in Indiana), returned to the Selection Meeting to help provide guidance and advice to the candidates. Currently, 910 caddies are enrolled in 19 colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars. After the Selection Meeting process concluded, more than 200 caddies were awarded the Evans Scholarship this year and will begin college this fall. The process included more than a dozen Selection Meetings held across the country. The Chick Evans Scholarships are administered by the Evans Scholars Foundation and supported by the Western Golf Association, which joined with legendary amateur golfer Charles Chick Evans to establish the caddie program in 1930. “These young men and women have excelled in academics and in service to their schools and communities,” said John Kaczkowski, WGA president and CEO. “They’ve been identified as the best of the best of the many candidates that applied for the Evans Scholarship, WCM - 12

and we are proud to recognize their achievements.” To learn more about the WGA and ESF, visit http:// www.wgaesf.org. Evans Scholars Foundation – Established in 1930 by the Western Golf Association and famed amateur golfer Charles Chick Evans Jr., the Evans Scholars Foundation provides full housing and tuition scholarships to deserving caddies across the country. The Evans Scholars Program is funded by contributions from more than 27,600 Evans Scholars Par Club members, as well as proceeds from the BMW Championship. Since the Program’s inception in 1930, more than 10,000 caddies nationwide have graduated as Evans Scholars.

Ethan Parsley

Western Golf Association – Founded in 1899 to serve golfing interests in the growing Midwest, the WGA now has more than 400 member clubs. The WGA conducts two prestigious amateur championships, the Western Amateur and the Western Junior, as well as the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoff events. The WGA promotes the use of caddies and supports the Evans Scholars Foundation, which awards college scholarships to caddies with limited financial means. The WGA is a driving force in the game, a respected charitable cause for thousands of supporters and a distinguished leader in the nation’s golf community.

WESTFIIELD TRAIL ADDITIONS As people head outdoors this spring, be aware of these additions to the city’s trails system: COVERED SWING: An Eagle Scout project, this covered swing along the Monon near Custom Concrete gives trail users a place to sit and rest with some protection from sun or rain. Andrew Bredensteiner, a Scout since first grade, initiated the project to honor his father, who passed away suddenly last February. “Now all the people that come by and sit on the swing will know much I loved my father,” Andrew said. CUSTOM CONCRETE FITNESS STATIONS: Due to their location adjacent to the Monon Trail, Custom Concrete decided to install three fitness stations on their property just off the trail. Stations will give trail users a place to stop and stretch and also allow employees of Custom Concrete to incorporate fitness into their workdays. One of the three was funded by local nonprofit Anna’s Celebration of Life, and is designed to spread awareness of children who are disabled. GRASSY BRANCH BRIDGE: The new bridge over Grassy Branch connects the Monon Trail all the way to S.R. 32. It is one stepping stone to extending the Monon all the way through Westfield’s city limits, with Phase 5 (Monon over S.R. 32) and Phase 7 (Monon Elementary to 216th Street) being the final additions. MONON PHASE 6: The Monon Trail has been extended from 181st Street to Monon Trail Elementary. This expansion adds 6,800 feet to the mainline Trail and about 1,250 feet of connector trail along 181st Street. Signs, lighting and other items will be completed this spring.
