Worn to reborn WELCOME TO OUR WONDERFUL RECYCLE WORLD Hierbij introduceren wij met trots onze eerste editie van de BLUE Journal! Een krant speciaal gewijd aan al onze avonturen en innovaties op het gebied van gerecycled denim. Onze reis begon een aantal jaren geleden, toen we ons realiseerden hoeveel textielafval werd verbrand of terecht kwam op de vuilnisbelt. Slechts een klein percentage wordt daadwerkelijk gerecycled. Eeuwig zonde! Waarom maken we niet iets moois van dit “afval”, dat ook nog eens helpt om onze planeet te verduurzamen? We vonden onze uitdaging in het populairste, maar ook meest vervuilende kledingstuk: de spijkerbroek. Sindsdien is het onze missie om versleten kleding een tweede leven te geven: “WORN to REBORN.” In deze BLUE Journal willen wij jou meenemen langs unieke innovaties waar wij de afgelopen tijd aan gewerkt hebben. Naast een prachtige en duurzame kledingcollectie zijn wij druk aan het experimenteren om te ontdekken wat we nog meer kunnen maken van gerecycled denim: waterdichte tenten en jassen met geïntegreerde zonnepanelen zijn slechts het begin.

Finally it’s time to introduce our first issue of the BLUE Journal. We launched this journal to share our world of recycled denim stories with you.

Our journey started several years ago when we realized how much textile waste - which actually is in perfect condition to be recycled - is being burned or is ending up in useless landfills. So we thought, why not create something beautiful from it that helps to sustain our planet? We found our challenge in the most popular but also most polluting garment: the blue jeans. Ever since it has become our mission to give your worn-out jeans a second life that matters and lives beyond just one garment, something we call ‘WORN to REBORN’.

With the BLUE Journal we want to bring you closer to the remarkable denim innovations that we have been working on for the last couple of years. Next to our core collection of well-crafted and beautiful garments, we are very eager to experiment with so much more that can be created from recycled denim; waterproof denim tents or recycled denim aprons developed for the Conscious Hotels are just the beginning. So just start diving into it and see for yourself!

The Blue Loop DNA THE AUTHENTIC STORY BEHIND RECYCLED DENIM PRODUCTS Samen met een team vol getalenteerde mensen delen wij de passie voor het hergebruiken van afgeschreven materialen. Samen ontwerpen en produceren wij een kledingcollectie met als doel het verduurzamen van de denim- en kledingindustrie.

Onze collectie varieert van duurzame jeans, super zachte shirts, comfortabele sweatshirts en hoodies gemixt met lamswol tot een reeks stoere accessoires.

Together with a talented team of people who share the same passion for creating new from old, we design and produce a collection that aims to make the denim and clothing production more valuable and sustainable with every small step we take.

Our well-cared-for product range varies from durable jeans, soft to skin t-shirts, to comfortable sweatshirts and hoodies with brushed lambswool as well as a range of cool accessories.

Elke versleten jeans is gemaakt van katoen en daardoor uitermate waardevol voor ons. Na het inzamelen van jouw oude spijkerbroeken gaan krachtige ontrafelmachines aan het werk. Zorgvuldig ontrafelen zij elke broek, inclusief ritsen en metalen details, tot er aan het einde van het proces alleen lichtblauwe jeansvezels overblijven. Deze vezels vormen de basis voor ons Blue LOOP DNA. Om inzicht te geven in de oorsprong, samenstelling en ecologische voetafdruk van onze collectie werken we samen met REMO. Every worn-out pair of blue jeans is made from cotton and therefore extremely valuable for us. After we have collected your old jeans, powerful shredding machines carefully tear apart each pair including the details such as the metal zippers and the rivets in order to reclaim the original cotton fibers.

At the end of this process we have unraveled the old garments into light blue denim fibers, which build the core for our Blue LOOP DNA. To show an item’s origin and its past life, the precise percentage of the used recycled volume and the environmental savings of water, CO2 and energy, we collaborate with REMO to analyze our production chain. On each special REMO label, which is attached to each garment, you can discover the ecological footprint of the garment you have purchased!

jacket to the future In een project gelanceerd door de Waddenvereniging, zijn we een samenwerking aangegaan met modeontwerpster Pauline van Dongen om innovatieve kledingstukken met zonnecellen te ontwikkelen. In 2015 introduceerden we de eerste gerecycled denim Solar Parka uitgerust met een zonnepaneel waarmee binnen 2 uur een smartphone kon worden opgeladen.

Om duurzaam toerisme te stimuleren werden een aantal vrijwilligers van de Werkgroep Excursies (WEX) met deze Solar Parka’s uitgerust.

Hun gebruikerservaring daagde ons uit om het project op een hoger niveau te tillen met een ‘Jacket to the Future’ waarbij flexibele zonnecellen door middel van een lamineerproces geïntegreerd zijn in de jas. De lichtgekleurde stof van het Solar Jack is gemaakt van gerecycled denim gecombineerd met gerecycled polyester en een waterafstotende behandeling. Het Solar Jack is veelzijdig en praktisch in gebruik, bevat maar liefst 5 zakken en heeft een capuchon, die opgeborgen kan worden in de kraag door middel van een rits. In de voering van de jas is een mini powerbank geplaatst, die de gebruiker in staat stelt om diverse draagbare apparaten op te laden in elk weertype – van smartphone tot camera en GPS navigatie.

We hopen dat deze samenwerking inspireert om na te denken over hernieuwbare energie en het belang van duurzame innovaties, maar bovenal vragen we aandacht voor de schoonheid en het behoud van het grootste aaneengesloten getijdengebied van Europa, De Waddenzee.

In a project powered by the Waddenvereniging, we joined forces with fashion designer Pauline van Dongen – who is specialized in wearable technology – to develop groundbreaking solar garments.

In 2015 we created the first recycled denim Solar Parka equipped with solar panels that could charge a smart phone in less than 2 hours! To support sustainable tourism, we provided the tour guides of the Wadden Sea with the garments to offer them comfort and functionality, while they were on their expedition.

Being challenged by their user experience we are now taking the project to the next level with our ‘Jacket to the Future’, using flexible solar panels that are integrated directly into the garment.

The light colored fabric of the jacket is made of recycled denim combined with recycled polyester and a waterproof finish. Developed with the aim of high functionality, the jacket integrates 5 pockets and has a hood, which can be stored behind a zipper in the collar. A power bank placed directly in the lining of the jacket allows the user to charge any kind of portable device from smart phone to a camera and GPS navigation, under any kind of weather conditions.

We hope that this collaboration will inspire people to think about renewable energies and the importance of sustainable developments, as well as raise appreciation and awareness for the preservation of the biggest tidal area in Europe: the Wadden Sea.

extraordinary SHELTER Op het onbewoonde Waddeneilandje Rottumeroog hebben wij in samenwerking met Staatsbosbeheer een nieuw tijdelijk onderkomen geplaatst voor de vogelwachters.

De shelter heeft de vorm van een iglo, meet ca. 30 m2 en is ontworpen en geproduceerd in Alaska. Hij is getest op de ruigste plekken ter wereld en voor uiteenlopende doeleinden ingezet.

Met de start van het broedseizoen zoeken grote hoeveelheden vogels een broedplek. Rottumeroog is bij hoogwater een belangrijke vluchtplaats in de Waddenzee. Rust is in de periode april tot en met augustus van levensbelang. Duo’s vogelwachters van Staatsbosbeheer zien hier op toe en hebben een veilig onderdak nodig op deze eilanden waar wind en water regeren.

We zijn deze samenwerking met Staatsbosbeheer aangegaan, omdat we geloven dat we gezamenlijk een flexibel, duurzaam en comfortabel onderkomen kunnen creëren, dat geen negatieve, ecologische voetafdruk op het eiland achterlaat.

In 2014 is het huis op Rottumeroog afgebroken, nadat het door erosie dreigde te verdwijnen in de Waddenzee. De zelfvoorzienende shelter is basic ingericht met een woon-werkruimte, keuken en twee slaapplekken. De elektriciteit wordt gerealiseerd door twee zonnepanelen en een accu.

the fisherman Eeuwenlang hebben Nederlandse vissers woeste zeeën en rivieren getrotseerd. Tijdens hun koude en barre tochten droegen zij warme truien die gebreid waren door hun vrouwen thuis. Deze bovenkleding zou de geschiedenis ingaan als de eerste gebreide werkkledij. Ieder dorp had zijn eigen unieke patroon, die werd doorgegeven van moeder op dochter.

For centuries, Dutch fishermen have tamed our wild seas and rivers. During their cold and rough journeys they wore unique, warm sweaters that were knitted by their wives. These sweaters were the first knitted tops ever worn as workwear.

Every little village had its own recognizable pattern, which was passed on from generation to generation.

Diverse oude foto’s waarop stoere zeelieden stonden afgebeeld, inspireerden Stella Ruhe om de geschiedenis van deze visserstruien te onderzoeken. Ze ontdekte meer dan 60 originele breipatronen van 40 verschillende Nederlandse dorpen.

In september 2013 lanceerde ze haar boek ‘Visserstruien’: een eerbetoon aan het vergeten vakmanschap, dat sindsdien weer omarmd is door vele mensen. Met Stella delen we de passie voor authenticiteit en een nostalgische nieuwsgierigheid naar de nautische geschiedenis van Nederland.

Old photographs of these rough men inspired Stella Ruhe to research the history of these fisherman sweaters. She found more than 60 original knitting patterns from 40 different Dutch villages. In September 2013 she launched her book ‘Dutch Traditional Ganseys’; a tribute to this craftsmanship, which has been embraced by many people since.

Together with Stella we share a passion for authenticity and the Dutch nautical heritage. We therefore joined forces and recreated nostalgic fisherman sweaters as part of our collection.

Eén van onze favoriete stijlen is de visserstrui uit Harlingen, een stad in de provincie Friesland.

In samenwerking met de Waddenvereniging hebben wij de visserstrui van hun bakermat in een nieuw jasje gestoken. De donkerblauwe trui staat symbool voor het 50-jarig bestaan van de vereniging. De trui is gemaakt van een zachte mix van gerecycled denim, lamswol en nylon, waardoor deze het hele jaar door gedragen kan worden.

One of our top sellers is the fisherman sweater from Harlingen, the capital town of the Dutch province Friesland.

In collaboration with the Wadden Sea Society we re-launched their original fisherman sweater. The navy sweater celebrates their 50-year anniversary as protector of the island area in the north of The Netherlands. With a unique, soft blend of recycled denim, lambs wool and nylon, this sweater can be worn year-round.

On Rottumeroog, a remote, uninhabited Dutch island we have had the privilege to construct a temporary refuge for the birdwatchers of the National Forestry Commission Staatsbosbeheer. This igloo-shaped shelter, with a size of 30 m2, is designed and built in Alaska and has been tested under most severe weather conditions all over the world.

With the start of the breeding season, birds will look for safe places to land and breed. Rottumeroog is an important island where thousands of birds rest and feed, a little miracle of Dutch landscapes. To ensure peace for the birds, the birdwatchers will stay on the Island during the breeding phase and make sure nobody will disturb the birds. We joined forces with Staatsbosbeheer, because we believe that together we can create a flexible, sustainable and innovative accommodation that will leave no ecological footprint on the island.

While you can find a house on Rottumerplaat, the house on Rottumeroog was removed two years ago after it threatened to disappear in the sea. We found a challenge in helping the birdwatchers with something extraordinary. The sustainable and self-sufficient shelter is furnished with a small living room, kitchen and two bedrooms. Two solar panels combined with a power bank generate the electricity. We wish them a great stay!

Blue camp Sleeping underneath worn-out jeans Vanaf de zomer van 2016 kun je bivakkeren in tenten waar versleten spijkerbroeken in zijn verwerkt. Dit ambitieuze project – met de toepasselijke naam BlueCAMP – is een mooie aanvulling op het gebied van duurzaam kamperen.

This summer you can comfortably sleep in tents made from your wornout jeans after you enjoyed a good festival in your new denims! With this ambitious project – called BlueCAMP – we would like to shine a new light on sustainable camping.

Om deze circulaire innovatie het daglicht te laten zien, sloegen wij de handen ineen met TenCate Outdoor Fabrics uit Nijverdal. Het resultaat is een stoere tent met de karakteristieke Blue LOOP uitstraling. Het tentdoek is waterafstotend, ademend en bovenal duurzaam. Het materiaal bestaat voor 25% uit gerecycled denim, waarbij het streven is om in de toekomst meer gerecycled materiaal toe te voegen. Zo is het grondzeil gemaakt van Recuppasta, een duurzaam kunststof gemaakt van snijafval van grondzeil.

We joined forces with multinational and renown tent cloth manufacturer TenCate. The collaboration resulted in an extraordinary fabric that blends the characteristics of the Blue LOOP denim look with high quality tent requirements such as water repellency, breathability and above all durability. 25% Recycled denim has now been added to the fabric of the tent. The goal is to find step-by-step sustainable solutions for its other components; for instance by replacing the polyester share with recycled fibers. The recycled PVC groundsheet – called Recuppasta – is already made completely from plastic scraps.

De ontwikkeling van de tent heeft in zijn geheel plaatsgevonden in Nederland en België; van het verzamelen van jouw versleten spijkerbroeken, het ontrafelen, tot het spinnen van de garens en het maken van de tenten. Op deze manier ontstaat een circulaire, duurzame keten die begint bij het recyclen van versleten spijkerbroeken.

BlueCAMP wordt deze zomer getest op één van de mooiste plekken in Nederland: de Waddeneilanden. Texel en Terschelling zullen deze zomer het decor zijn voor het duurzame onderkomen. Met alle informatie die we dit jaar op de Waddeneilanden zullen vergaren, gaan we de tenten de komende jaren nog duurzamer maken. BlueCAMP is een initiatief dat streeft naar maximaal comfort met een minimale, ecologische voetafdruk. Vanaf 2017 zal BlueCAMP een standplaats krijgen op verschillende festivals in Nederland. Dit zorgt voor een mooie combinatie tussen duurzaamheid, beleving en vrije tijd. Slapen onder spijkerbroeken, dat is lekker wakker worden.

This circular initiative is completely taking place in The Netherlands and Belgium. From collecting your worn-out jeans and unraveling to yarn spinning, weaving and finally making tents. It’s a simple loop that starts with anyone who donates his or her blue friend in a textile container instead of throwing it into the bin.

We will pitch the BlueCAMP tents on the Dutch Wadden islands this summer, where they will be exposed to extreme weather circumstances.

This opportunity will teach us how we can improve our camping experience with maximum comfort and minimal footprint. In the near future we would like to create small, but comfortable and sustainable camping grounds for various festivals.

We love to experiment and believe that our Blue LOOP DNA can live beyond just garments and does not only inspire us, but many more fields to become more sustainable and valuable.
