Why do we exist?
Our Vision
A healthy ocean, abundant with life, that supports people and climate.
Blue Marine Foundation is a UK charity that seeks to protect and restore life in the ocean.
We work in partnership to effectively deliver marine conservation and restoration solutions to the climate and biodiversity crisis. We use science, community engagement, media and legal campaigns, investigations, education initiatives and policy work to drive conservation impact. We work collaboratively and strategically but without geographic restriction, responding to the needs of the marine environment.
Our Mission
To ensure the effective protection of at least 30 per cent of the ocean by 2030 and the sustainable management of the whole ocean.
Our Strategic Pillars
Blue Marine’s strategy has four strategic pillars, which we believe to be the most effective way to achieve our mission:
SECURING EFFECTIVE PROTECTION OF THE OCEAN
TACKLING OVERFISHING, OVEREXPLOITATION AND OTHER DAMAGING ACTIVITIES
SUPPORTING LOW-IMPACT FISHING AND EQUITABLE USE OF THE SEA
RESTORING VITAL ECOSYSTEMS We
Our Strategy
Blue Marine acts as a catalyst to deliver marine conservation effectively and at scale, working alongside small-scale fishers, local organisations and governments. Underpinning our work is the vital role of connection and community. By respecting and fostering a deep connection between local communities and their marine environments, we strive to facilitate collaborative engagement and generate support for improved ocean stewardship. We aim for our projects to benefit those who depend on them most, while building an increased sense of community ownership. Through this approach, we seek to pave a path of fair and equitable conservation that ensures all voices are heard.
Our Units
Blue Marine has eight units that are designed to challenge to way the ocean is governed and understood. They both support our location specific projects and catalyse systematic change in their own right.
BLUE LEGAL
Challenging breaches of the law in habitat destruction, illegal fishing misuse of the marine environment, holding companies and governments to account.
BLUE POLICY
Engaging with policy makers to implement stated policy and to alter policy to deliver sustainable fishing and marine protection.
BLUE INVESTIGATIONS
Researching, exposing and combatting harmful and unsustainable practices affecting our ocean.
BLUE SCIENCE
Providing Blue Marine with strong scientific foundation that strengthens the case for marine conservation, monitoring and quantifying impact, and scoping new ocean technologies.
BLUE CLIMATE
Demonstrating and quantifying the value of the ocean in mitigating climate change and ensuring that the market for blue carbon develops in an equitable way that supports biodiversity.
BLUE ECONOMICS
Quantifying the real cost of destructive fishing and developing new ways of directing capital at scale towards ocean protection and restoration.
BLUE MEDIA
Raising awareness of ocean conservation using articles, films and international social media campaigns to engage either specific audiences or the wider public.
BLUE EDUCATION
Inspiring all ages to become ocean advocates with engaging, imaginative materials and through hands-on education and training programmes.
