Australian exotica 19 JANUARY – 3 MARCH Australian exotica draws on Monash Gallery of Art’s nationally significant collection of Australian photographs and showcases a range of photographic work that engages with the theme of the exotic antipodes. Ever since the fifteenth century, when European cartographers began including the contour of Terra Australis Incognita (‘the unknown land of the south’) in their speculative maps of the globe, the continent of Australia has been thought of as an exotic place. For many of the artists in this exhibition, this European vision is something that needs to be subverted and critiqued. For others, the idea of living in an eccentric environment, with surreal undertones, continues to inform a distinctively Australian sense of place.
Artists include Brook Andrew, Michael Cook, Destiny Deacon, Peter Dombrovskis, Marian Drew, Leah KingSmith, Joseph McGlennon, Tracey Moffatt, Darren Siwes, Robyn Stacey and Christian Thompson. An MGA travelling exhibition

Cath Barcan
Nature morte/ Civil works 11 MAY - 23 JUNE Nature morte/Civil works explores the seductive and confounding use of plastic and its ubiquitous role in our daily life. Blue Mountains artist Cath Barcan uses still life and landscape photography to highlight the use of plastic packaging in food and its presence in the landscape. Barcan references still life painters of the Dutch Golden Age who created images that grappled with issues of mortality, permanence and death. Her still life photographs harness this familiar visual language to present paradoxical and conflicting relationships between life, death, stillness, urgency, beauty and time. Barcan’s landscape photographs depict wrapped and enclosed road construction sites and other civil works – staged as theatrical spaces,
akin to still life sets and complete with drapery – which both reveal and conceal the complexity of what lies beneath. A Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Exposé Program exhibition

PLAYBACK: DOBELL AUSTRALIAN DRAWING BIENNIAL COMES TO BLUE MOUNTAINS CITY ART GALLERY 16 MARCH - 5 MAY Continuing the legacy of the Dobell Prize for Drawing this touring exhibition from the Art Gallery of NSW presents new work by eight contemporary Australian artists, two of them from the Blue Mountains, who are exploring history through crossovers between drawing and the moving image. In Playback works by Vernon Ah Kee, Sharon Goodwin, Laura Hindmarsh, Locust Jones, Dorota Mytych, Jason Phu, Lucienne Rickard and Nick Strike respond to images found in art history, archives, newspapers, cinema and online. “By reanimating images from the past, the artists selected for Playback enliven our sense of curiosity about
history but also encourage us to understand the ways in which history repeats itself. There are drawings in Playback that also invoke the moving image as they unfold and reform in a process of recycling, and in so doing, the image, rather than being recovered or restored, becomes something other” said Art Gallery of NSW curator Matt Cox. Playback showcases the most recent work in Vernon Ah Kee’s ongoing

Unwritten series, in which his ghostly drawings of faces stand as a testament to the violence of the 2004 Palm Island riots, while Sharon Goodwin’s work breaks away from the two-dimensional realms normally associated with drawing in her recontextualising of the story of the Egyptian-born St Anthony the Great. Ingrid Bergman and Rita Hayworth are among the women populating Laura Hindmarsh’s drawings that record the artist’s online experiences
with cinematic cult-classics in which the female protagonist appears doubled or mirrored in the camera frame. Locust Jones considers our consumption of current events as he uses a bamboo nib to create a scrolling visual ticker tape of the 24-hour news cycle. Jones’ expansive drawing is a visual diary of the events and people that made the daily news, from New Year’s Eve to April Fools Day 2018. Dorota Mytych uses sand to create a mesmerising series of moving drawings in which images of constellations, cups, landscapes and famous artworks appear and disappear, while Jason Phu brings humour to the exhibition with his cheeky drawings and performance inspired by bathroom wall graffiti and Chinese folklore.
Strike recreates 24 frames from Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s surrealist film Un chien Andalou (1929) so viewers can reanimate them with a smartphone – evoking the pre-cinema technology of the flip-book where still images are made to move with thumb pressure.

BRAEMAR BRINGS SCULPTURE TO SPRINGWOOD We were excited to start 2019 with the unveiling of 2 concrete sculpture pads in the Braemar Gallery garden! For the last 3 years Braemar Gallery, in partnership with Scenic World, has been displaying outdoor sculptural artworks at the front of Braemar House as part of the annual Sculpture at Scenic World event. This exhibition has proven to be very popular with residents, visitors and art lovers which led to the desire of having a permanent, rotating display of sculptures in the space. The inclusion of a regular program of displays will be managed by the Braemar Gallery Management Committee and will extend opportunities for local artists and
artisans to display their work within a public setting - so watch this space, literally, as Springwood is about to get sculptural!

MÀNRAN (SCOTLAND) SATURDAY 13 APRIL 8PM "Gaelic folk superstars" - BBC's The Quay Sessions “Mànran are an exceptionally talented bunch of young guys that are taking the music world by storm with their high energy, stomping tunes and phenomenal Gaelic and English songs” - Celtic Connections
Mànran are one of the hottest acts and best-loved Scottish bands performing on the international music scene today. The 2011 launch of their debut single, ‘Latha Math’ heralded a meteoric rise to the top of the Scottish music world that quickly saw them playing many of the most prestigious festivals in Europe.
Variously tagged as “folk-rock”, “Celtic-rock” and even “grown-up folk-rock”, Mànran’s music defies easy labelling due to the eclectic mix of influences on the band and the alchemy that melds them. With a central ethos built around the band’s traditional Celtic roots, fiery tunes from fiddle, accordion, flute, uillean and Highland bagpipes bind powerfully to a rhythm section awash with elements of funk, jazz and rock to create some of the most innovative and uplifting instrumental music around. Coupled with songs performed in both Gaelic and English, it’s easy to understand why Mànran are in such high demand as a live act. With music ranging from the explosive to the poignant and, at all times, a palpable connection to their audience, Mànran thrive on live performances. So far, this has taken the band across Europe, the USA, and Asia as well as Australia, where the band was awarded “International Artist of the
