FROM THE DIRECTOR

Following on from a stunning line-up of exhibitions in 2014, the 2015 program at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre is sure to captivate and inspire audiences. Our highlight shows include the work of local artists James Blackwell, David Middlebrook, Joan Ross, John Caldwell, Tamara Mendels, Locust Jones, Kayo Yokoyama, Kunchok Gyaltsen, Rowan Matthews, Damien Castaldi and Solange Kershaw, while curated and travelling exhibitions include The Green Desert: Photographs of Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre by Peter Elfes, Strange Embrace, Sculpture Otherwise, the Darnell Collection and Arthur Boyd: An Active Witness. New acquisitions to our Collection include a wonderful suite of print works by Wendy Sharpe, Bernard Ollis and Gary Shead, generously donated by Anne and Ian Smith of Falls Gallery. Also new to the Collection is the

complete set of works from the 2014 exhibition Black & Blue, produced by the Black & Blue group of Blue Mountains writers and illustrators. Many members would remember the art storage initiative that we implemented during the 2013 bushfires, where members were invited to bring items from their private art collections to the Cultural Centre for safe storage. With the support of a grant from the Westpac Group’s Natural Disaster Recovery Fund, the Cultural Centre has expanded its storage facility to be better prepared for a bushfire event. I take this opportunity to thank Westpac for their financial support of this important service the Cultural Centre provides. See you soon at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

MEET ROSE STIBBARD Promotional and Retail Manager - Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 3 PLACES YOU HAVE WORKED THAT HAVE SHAPED YOUR CAREER SO FAR: I started in marketing and communications as a Marketing Assistant at Allen and Unwin Publishing. It was a great role to start a career in, it was a huge learning curve and fast paced. I left the world of books as I had a desire to work in the Not-ForProfit (NFP) space. I worked as the Marketing and Communications Officer at Suicide Prevention Australia and before coming to the Cultural Centre I was the Marketing and Database Coordinator at White Ribbon Australia. As many NFP’s are small, I had the great opportunity to work across many facets of the organisation and learn a great variety of skills. However, the main thing I learned is to keep things in perspective and to always

give 110% because you don’t know when your message could be helping or inspiring someone to change. WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON THE WEEKEND? Exploring the Blue Mountains! Having only just moved here I am quickly learning there is so much to see and do. Otherwise I’ll be at home working on my jungle of a backyard with my partner and two dogs. WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BLUE MOUNTAINS? I grew up in a small town on the Mid North Coast, and after living in sydney for six years i was ready to move somewhere I could have a house and some space again. I’ve always loved the Blue Mountains and the beautiful surrounds. It seemed like the perfect place to live.

DRAWING FROM THE BLUE MOUNTAINS DAVID MIDDLEBROOK 28 MARCH – 10 MAY 2015

12 • Blue Mountains City Art Gallery

This exhibition features large scale and multiple-panel works with images that were drawn from and in The Blue Mountains National Park and environs.

Using extreme detailed marks, these drawings explore the ideas of microcosm and macrocosm of the landscapes surrounding us.

Middlebrook, who is known for his Australian desert landscapes paintings, draws the landscape that he lives in. Within this body of work he is trying to decipher the Blue Mountains landscape, seeing it anew, and relating it to his obsession with the unobtainable horizon.

While having been painting and exhibiting full time since 1977, Caldwell has been following a more focussed program of creating exhibitions series from specific regions. WHITE OUT TAMARA MENDELS 16 MAY – 28 JUNE 2015 Mendels explores a new series of process driven paintings based on iPhone drawings, showing the intimacy of technology and its relationship to painting and the handmade. The white paint acts as an eraser, effectively ‘whitingout’ parts of the painting revealing and concealing isolated gestural markings, creating ambiguity between background and foreground, positive and negative, solid and void. Bookings appreciated: 02 4780 5410 In the series White Out, Mendels began using the iPhone application Finger Paint as a new way of creating gestural markings. Using only her thumb and finger on a small screen allowed for greater intimacy and speed, and provided opportunities for quick experimentation and many iterations. The iPhone is always with the artist: she takes it into the studio, uses it to photograph paintings, then manipulate the image and make further adjustments before putting paint back onto the canvas. “We have a bold, distinctive, and confident group of 35 artists from around the globe who will present a diverse collection of smaller contemporary sculpture. The selection panel has provided us with a very cohesive and complex array of work, which will compliment and coexist in the natural forest-scape. This year, we have been provided with themes of remembrance of war, fluidity and motion, and many sculptural influences from kinetic to abstract, environmental to figurative and representational.” Justin Morrissey, Exhibition Manager and Curator of Sculpture at Scenic World. “We are very pleased to grow our partnership with Scenic World, and are looking forward to exhibiting Sculpture Otherwise in the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery in 2015, which will engage a wider audience with the artworks. We will also choose one work from the Sculpture at Scenic World exhibition for the Blue

Mountains Cultural Centre Exhibition Opportunity, which will be displayed for one month at the Centre after Sculpture at Scenic World concludes.” Paul Brinkman, Director – Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE COLLECTION: WORKS BY GARRY SHEAD, WENDY SHARPE, BERNARD OLLIS AND THE BLACK & BLUE COLLECTED EDITION March 2014 saw the launch of the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection with the acquisition of the work Jenny Kee (Eternal Muse) by local artist Scott Marr. The Collection was officially launched by former Director of the Art Gallery of NSW, Mr Edmund Capon AM, OBE. Since the launch, the Collection has grown significantly with recent acquisitions of 47 limited edition prints donated by Falls Gallery of renowned Australian artists Garry Shead, Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis. Wendy Sharpe is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists. Her awards include the Archibald Prize for her 1996 self-portrait and the Portia Geach Memorial Award in both 1995 and 2003. Graduate of the prestigious Royal College of Art in London (M.A. R.C.A Painting), Bernard Ollis is known as a painter of people. He has had annual solo exhibitions since 1973, and was Director of the National Art School in Sydney for 12 years. 20 • Blue Mountains City Art Gallery

Garry Shead is one of Australia’s most collectable painters. He has been in the public eye since he started exhibiting in the 1960s. While he has an international reputation as a figurative painter, he is also well known as an experimental filmmaker and printmaker. Falls Gallery, owned and managed by Anne and Ian Smith, was established in the Blue Mountains in 1990 and showcases constantly changing exhibitions of works on paper and ceramics by emerging and established artists. Another significant donation, the Black & Blue Collected Edition,

comprising 19 illustrations and 18 accompanying poems and stories, was made by the Black & Blue Project. All artworks were previously exhibited in the Black & Blue Exposé Exhibition in the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. With a colour palette limited to black, white and blue, this set of archival prints represents individual responses to the dark and mysterious stories associated with the Blue Mountains region.
