FROM THE DIRECTOR Well into its third year of operation, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre has welcomed its 300,000th visitor and is proud to have showcased over 40 major exhibitions. Keen to continue the success of the Cultural Centre, it is with great excitement that we now join with the new Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub – ‘the Hub’ – to further expand opportunities to engage with the Arts in the Mountains. The new facility, located in Springwood, will be showcasing fantastic stage shows from local, national and international performers together with providing a modern facility for use by a diverse range of community groups and services. The connection between the Cultural Centre and the Hub extends to our InSight Membership Program, which now incorporates both facilities.

On top of the many benefits InSight members receive at the Cultural Centre, members will now be entitled to special discounts on tickets and receive exclusive access to pre-sale tickets for selected shows at the Blue Mountains Theatre. Keep an eye on our website page, Facebook and e-news for up-to-date opportunities for InSight Members. InSight will now feature upcoming programs of both the Cultural Centre and the Hub and provide members with all the details needed to experience the best visual and performing arts activity in the Mountains. I hope you enjoy issue 8 of InSight and take the opportunity to visit one or more of our upcoming events. Paul Brinkman Director, Blue Mountains Cultural Centre
FROM THE HUB Whether you’re 5 or 105, Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub has some fantastic events coming up in 2015. We kicked off our first theatre event in May when esteemed Australian author David Malouf took to the stage for a special ‘In Conversation’ program. And in our first live concert, Live at the Village presented AMBON – the premiere performance of Lloyd Swanton’s 12 piece composition from a stellar ensemble of musicians. Look out for the hit ABC Kids show Lah-Lah, LIVE in Concert! this July – tickets are selling fast, and will have kids grinning and shimmying from go to whoa. In August, two of Australia’s most legendary performers, Max Cullen and Warren Fahey, square off as Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson in Dead Men Talking.
We’ll also be hosting a range of diverse community events across the year, including the monthly Springwood Growers Markets, Sunshine Day, Vietnam Veterans Long Tan Day, and Blue Mountains Bush Fire Expo. But of course, this is just the beginning – we’re developing our performance, events and film program in addition to welcoming back Blue Mountains Concert Society, as well as Blue Mountains Musical Society who will present a season of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in October. You can stay informed by signing up to our e-news. On behalf of the team, we look forward to welcoming you soon at the Hub. Tim Smith Manager, Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub

WHITE OUT TAMARA MENDELS 16 MAY – 28 JUNE 2015 Mendels explores a new series of process driven paintings based on iPhone drawings, showing the intimacy of technology and its relationship to painting and the handmade. The white paint acts as an eraser, effectively ‘whiting-out’ parts of the painting revealing and concealing isolated gestural markings, creating ambiguity between background and foreground, positive and negative, solid and void. STRANGE EMBRACE 30 MAY – 19 JULY 2015 Strange Embrace presents new work by five artists working in experimental forms of installation, action research, live art and photography, through which they interpret the exhibition concept. Finding ourselves in unusual situations with another human being can evoke embarrassment, awkward silence, random exchanges or uncanny recognition. The works in Strange Embrace all explore the edges of comfort within the social space and its miscellany of encounters, often drawing on the presence of strangers. Artists Cath Barcan, Anne Graham, Astra Howard, Daniel Kojta and Honi Ryan show us a diversity of interpersonal responses. The creative research behind Strange Embrace is unusual as the five artists collectively attended a seven day live-in artists’ residency at Bilpin international ground for Creative initiatives (BigCi) as part of the exhibition development. This intensive residency allowed them to gain understanding into each other’s practices and to develop collaborative relationships while working towards an identified goal.
In conversations with the artists surrounding the residency, the recurring theme was the depth they were able to achieve in their creative processes through understanding each other’s practices within the curatorial premise. As Cath Barcan commented, the residency “opened up the possibility of the dialogue between the artists being part of the work. It brought the possibility of a light touch. I work in a slow and immersive way and it was interesting being around artists who were comfortable working in the moment, creating work that may last only for a minute.” Astra Howard reflected on the residency’s value in gaining insight into the other artists’ practice: “We were finding the connections and the why of us all being in the show.” Each artist spoke of “spending time with ideas” rather than hurrying into their work. This time for common contemplation, for the ideas to show themselves and be revealed within a group context made for a unique development phase.

Curator Rilka Oakley said: “Working between the structure of the institution and the creativity of the artists, I too am privileged to witness the unfolding dynamic of creative relationships. The real beauty of course is in seeing ideas unfolding, from the embryonic to the fullyfledged works.” A Blue Mountains Cultural Centre exhibition curated by Rilka Oakley In association with Bilpin international ground for Creative initiatives

NEW ACQUISITIONS FOR THE BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE COLLECTION Since its launch in March of 2014, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection has steadily grown through purchases and generous donations. The latest artworks to join the Collection are: Blackheath based artist John Caldwell’s Wollangambe Wilderness. This work was included in the Cultural Centre’s inaugural exhibition Picturing the Great Divide: Visions from Australia’s Blue Mountains, and is an excellent example of Caldwell’s mastery of landscape and acrylic wash techniques. The work was acquired for the Collection through a generous donation by Patron Member Gil Appleton, in memory of Jim McClelland. A series of photographs by local photographer Andrew Merry. The five works – The Valley of the Grose, Hydro Majestic Casino Cupola (aerial view), Burnt out Walking Track to the Grose Valley, After Harry Phillips and The Three Sisters Motel – have been donated by the artist. Each artwork
captures a quintessential aspect of the Blue Mountains, and a number of the donated pieces have been previously exhibited in the Cultural Centre’s inaugural exhibition.
