FROM THE DIRECTOR As we near the end of 2015, it is an ideal time to recognise the many achievements of the year. Blue Mountains Cultural Centre exhibited the work of over 40 local artists alongside major touring exhibitions, welcomed over 120,000 visitors and hosted over 100 events and programs. Through the generous support of donors and our Insight Members, we added to our growing collection of fine art and increased our Collection Fund, dedicated to acquiring artworks of significance to the Blue Mountains region. With the new Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub at Springwood opening last March, we now have a professional standard 430 seat theatre and performance space. Combined with Braemar Gallery to create an
Arts precinct, the Hub has added an extra dimension to arts activity in the Lower Mountains, and by partnering with the visual arts focussed Cultural Centre in Katoomba, Blue Mountains City Council has shown significant investment in Arts infrastructure across the Mountains. I take the opportunity to thank our hard working staff and volunteers at the Cultural Centre and the Hub who have made the year such a great success, ensuring our Arts and cultural facilities continue to engage and inspire audiences, and most importantly, celebrate the Arts as a valuable part of our community. We now look forward to 2016 and our program that brings the best art and cultural experiences from across the Mountains, Australia and the world to our doorstep. KATOOMBA STREET ART WALK The Cultural Centre partnered with Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) and Street Art Murals Australia (SAMA) to launch the Street Art Walk in July 2015. This fantastic display of aerosol murals by some of the world’s most recognised street artists alongside the works of many talented locals has been a huge success and transformed Beverley Place from a dilapidated back street into a vibrant and popular attraction. Far from a static display, this outdoor gallery will have regularly changing artworks, so make sure you keep visiting to discover new additions.

FLORA & FAUNA THE NATURE OF FASHION 12 SEPTEMBER – 1 NOVEMBER An exhibition of fashion and accessories drawn from the Darnell Collection – a world-renowned, private collection of international couture and Ready-to-Wear, spanning three centuries. Nature has long been fashion’s muse; creatives in the industry have celebrated her beauty in diverse and unique ways, from full impact embellishment to subtle incorporation in weaves, from organic shapes and silhouettes to fabulous textiles that echo nature’s sublime nuances in a myriad of patterns, colours and styles. Each garment and accessory has been selected to reflect the diversity of flora and fauna. Themed, jewel-like vignettes, extolling the beauty of nature, show six categories: Lace; Embroidery; Embellishment; Printed; Textured Textiles; and Natural Dyeing. PLAY FOR TIME DAMIAN CASTALDI & SOLANGE KERSHAW 19 SEPTEMBER – 1 NOVEMBER Play For Time is a series of four audio-visual installations that invite the audience to engage with the works through playful, time-based interaction, recasting the visitor from passive observer to active creator. The ‘play’ element is reminiscent of Pierre Schaeffer and the ‘Musique Concrète’ movement, within which the word ‘jouer’ (to play) carried a double meaning: ‘to enjoy oneself by interacting with one’s surroundings’, as well as ‘to operate a musical instrument’. The four installations are: Type overTime PlayOngaku PlayforTwine LittleCreatureCabinets
Castaldi is a sound and digital media artist. Spanning over twenty years, his career is built upon a diverse practice that encompasses mixed media installation, performance and audiovisual production. The research focus in his current work is on designing real-time interactive systems using software, sensors, signal processing, new musical instruments and sculptural objects for performance and audiovisual installation, an area which he also works closely on with his partner Solange Kershaw.

ARTHUR BOYD AN ACTIVE WITNESS 7 NOVEMBER – 3 JANUARY This is the first major exhibition to consider the social consciousness that infused Arthur Boyd’s art and to convey the political life of Boyd, linking his actions with his artwork. Paintings, prints, ceramics and other materials from the Bundanon collection offer insights into how one of Australia’s greatest artists dealt with the social responsibility that defines humanity. The exhibition includes works by Boyd’s contemporaries and is supported by loans from public and private collections, photographs and other documents. A Bundanon Trust Touring Exhibition

JOAN ROSS 7 NOVEMBER – 3 JANUARY This exhibition showcases a selection from Joan Ross’ extensive repertoire including drawing, sculpture and video. Her works are both satirical and disarming while addressing serious issues including ownership, surveillance, fear and boundaries. Her trademark use of fluro is intentionally prevalent as are her kangaroo fur fashion items. Ross’ aesthetic is visually pleasing and yet confronting, reminding us of our colonial history and the ongoing repercussions of that history. CHRISTINE JOHNSON VOYAGES BOTANICAL 9 JANUARY – 21 FEBRUARY Voyages Botanical is artist Christine Johnson’s tribute to the untamed treasures of Australia’s vast native flower garden. It is indeed a voyage, through rare and wonderful landscapes, but also through our botanical heritage and history. Johnson’s delicate and beautifully-realised solar plate engravings of wildflowers are powerful symbols of the vulnerability and fragility of Australia’s natural environment and heritage.

A Perk Tucker Regional Gallery Touring Exhibition curated by Gavin Wilson Country & Western: landscape re-imagined forms part of Gallery Services’ National Touring Program, supported by Glencore. ARTHUR BOYD: AN ACTIVE WITNESS 7 NOVEMBER – 3 JANUARY Arthur Boyd may have been known as shy and retiring but he was certainly not passive. He felt passionately about society and the world in which he lived. His responses informed his art making. His compassion and concern is reflected in artworks which don’t deliver a strident message or a simple solution. They are infused with the complexity of the issues themselves; wrapped in mythological and biblical narratives and set in the Australian landscape he universalised. This is one of the reasons Boyd’s work has, and will continue, to endure. Arthur Boyd: An Active Witness honours the work of this internationally recognised Australian artist and the potential of the artist to influence society through their role as an active witness. It is the first major exhibition to consider the social and political consciousness that influenced Boyd’s art and contains a rich collection of significant artworks 18 • Blue Mountains City Art Gallery
by Boyd and his dynastic Australian artist family members. Alongside the Boyd collection, the exhibition shows a small archive of photographs, letters and other documents that provide insight into Boyd’s historical, cultural and social milieu. Also included are selected works by his significant modern Australian contemporaries, such as Sidney Nolan and Charles Blackman. Curated by Zara Stanhope, the exhibition is drawn from the collection of the Bundanon Trust and positions Boyd as a critical yet empathetic witness engaged with the urgent issues of his time, issues which remain salient for audiences today. Highlighted are enduring Boyd subject matters, reflecting the ethical paradoxes faced by individuals and humanity: outsider figures and the power of groups and individuals; the futility and violence of war; and the beauty, vulnerability and savagery of
nature. Constant presences in Boyd’s imagery are the metamorphosis between human and animal figures, and landscapes experienced and remembered. Boyd wrestled with the burden of the artists’ role as an active witness in his work but ultimately triumphed in his generous act of philanthropy, gifting his collection and Bundanon properties to the Australian people, saying: I want it to be accessible to any Australian whose life can be enriched by the beauty, the history, the landscape, the environment and by the energy and stimulation from social interaction with Australian creative artists. Arthur Boyd: An Active Witness is open at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery from 7 November – 3 January.
