L. Garcia Studios L. Garcia Studios is a true New Mexico-born endeavor whose distinguishing artistic vision takes its cue from our unique Southwestern pictorial history and aesthetic. The artworks emerging from L. Garcia Studios are primarily inspired by the classic phase of pottery produced by the Mimbres prehistoric cultures, which thrived in southern New Mexico’s Gila River and Mimbres Valleys from about 1100 to 1200 CE. The other major inspirational source for L. Garcia Studios is the Art Deco movement, which enjoyed its most influential period between the 1920s and the 1940s. L. Garcia Studios has astutely combined these visual well-springs not by coincidence but with the full conscious intention of exalting each of their best qualities in synchronous fashion. In general, early 20th Century Art Deco styles relied upon tenets put forth by the Cubists, Constructivists, Futurists, and the first Modernists — who in turn, relied upon visual gestures found in prehistoric and historic indigenous and “primitive” arts and cultures. L. Garcia Studios brings this graphical reliance full circle by directly applying a 21st Century awareness to ancient designs in a confident manner. Motifs that would have been painted into circular, pottery bowl interiors

have been flattened and arranged onto bronze square panels without sacrificing their spherical gravitational pull. Most importantly, the designs continue to radiate and swirl as the motifs engage in a pure energetic dance of opposing forces that are clearly captured within elaborate, repeating geometric borders. By coupling angular and highly symmetrical designs with bright and glossy patina finishes in boldly contrasting rich colors, the finished compositional layouts lavishly evoke an indulgence of wholesome visual exuberance. L. Garcia Studios is the brainchild of Leroy Garcia, who for many years remained a silent creative force behind the scenes of Blue Rain Gallery. His clear professional accomplishments, over twenty years, can be found in his pushing of artists to new and higher achievements. However, those decades of experience have also afforded him, and his collaborators (like his younger brother Eliseo Garcia), the creation of a solid platform of resources, knowledge, and technical mastery to produce the artistic revelations unique to L. Garcia Studios. He is pleased to present to you this new portfolio of bronzes; furthermore, he promises that this new undertaking will exhibit limitless possibilities in the future.
