From her first camera at age 12 to her new Nikon Digital SLR, Rebecca is fascinated with photography and can spend hours on end analyzing and editing the thousands of pictures she has compiled. Weddings, children, waterfalls, nature, and old rusty barns will be her subjects for the future.

Welcome To Sparta...

I watch the early morning fog play hide-and-seek with the trees in my yard as I sip my first cup of coffee. A rooster breaks the silence. Chickens were common to the farms that once dotted the countryside and a few are still kept, almost as pets. I hurry onto the roadway for town and work. A few stars peak through a break in the clouds, all but overcome by the morning light. Fog fills the valley in the distance. Low peaks break through like islands in a billowing sea. In the fields, round hay bales look like boulders in a cloud-like river. In the blue light of morning, the landscape reminds me of winter, still months away. I turn onto the main highway and meet other cars joining the bustle of morning. Light beams from the few stores already open as I enter Sparta. I arrive at my office and my day begins. One thing I cherish about Sparta is its rhythm. It winds up and winds down. I once lived in a more urban area far south of here. Though my home was far from a major thoroughfare, the drone of traffic was a constant back drop to life. Part of that city never slept and never woke up. The seasons were hot and hotter. Here nature's rhythms create a harmony with daily life. Summer fields of hay and corn supply winter feed for cows that graze our hills. Fields of Fraser fir, grown for Christmas trees, await harvest in the late fall. The culture is still reflective of a time not long past when the family farm was the economy of the county. When a handshake with a neighbor sealed a deal. When the goodwill of friends and neighbors was the only basis for hope on this earth during hard times. When the community was held together by an unshakeable faith that bright clouds would follow the darkness of the storm. It just seems the land and the people remain closer to those important anchors: the seasons and the rhythms of nature, the significance of each individual to the life of the community, humility in the face of nature's grandeur. It feels like a special place. If you are a resident, I hope you find a Chamber member with the service or product that you are seeking. Exploring...thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alot to do!

The landscape of Sparta Alleghany County is as varied as its vistas are strikingly beautiful. Between the New River on the county's northwestern border and the Blue Ridge Parkway along its southeast, is land of variety to explore. Spring through fall, the New is a gathering place for river enthusiasts. Flowing north, it joins the county near Scottville, turns east around the Piney Creek community and winds along the Virginia border north of Twin Oaks and Sparta. Whether you seek to canoe or kayak its waters, fish for small-mouth bass or musky, float down on a tube or just camp along the banks, New River State Park and local river outfitters are available to assist you. At the other end of the county, Stone Mountain State Park surrounds its namesake 600-foot granite dome and offers camping, historic sites, fishing, picnicking, rock climbing, waterfalls and trails. Between them the granddaddy of scenic drives, the Blue Ridge Parkway, winds along the Continental Divide. In addition to the vistas of the drive itself, at the center of the county and Parkway, is Doughton Park, named for local native Bob Doughton, the congressman probably most responsible for the Parkwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presence in the county. Historic sites, a restaurant and lodge, trails, camping and fishing are among its amenities. Some 28 miles north is the Parkway's newest addition, the Blue Ridge Music Center. Devoted to the rich musical heritage of the mountains, it features concerts, workshops and displays from late spring through mid-fall. Of course, music is not limited to the Parkway. There are regular barn dances and concerts in and around Sparta. Sparta is home to the area's longest running jam. Named for its location in the Floyd Crouse Town Park, the Crouse House Pickers gather to play every Monday. Sparta is located at the center of the county, at the intersection of two principal roadways, US 21 and NC 18. At that intersection, the Courthouse is surrounded by the shops and stores of old downtown. Along Main Street, US 21, two shopping centers and other businesses, galleries and shops round out the retail merchants. It is also home to Alleghany Wellness Center, an outstanding fitness center with an indoor pool for a small community. While it is the county's only municipality, Sparta is surrounded by other communities with their own character. At the southeastern entrance to the county, Roaring Gap is named after the area's oldest resort communities, and sports three -- two private and one semi-private -- golf and country clubs, galleries, restaurants and a camp conference center. Two public golf courses are available, one in the northeastern corner and one west of Sparta at Twin Oaks. Along NC 18, Laurel Springs is at the southwestern entrance to the county. Congressman Doughton's home is located there and offers lodging as a bed and breakfast. There is a motel, restaurant, the county's other camp-conference center, and a winery. The Sparta and Alleghany countryside are home to another winery, numerous bed and breakfast inns, rental cabins and other lodging facilities and the studios and shops of artisans and crafts people. For visitors who wish to explore the county by car, motorcycle or bicycle, the Visitors' Center has printed driving loops to guide you. The accompanying map helps orient you to the area. Mountain Life...

A proud heritage and the 21st Century come together in the community life of Sparta and Alleghany County. Cattle and Fraser fir are the landscape along winding roads and testify to an agricultural economy that has supported the community since the first settlers. Cattle have long grazed the mountains. Fraser fir is native to the Appalachian Mountains, but only began to be planted for sale as Christmas trees in the 1970s. Today, the county is among the top three producers of Christmas trees in the state.

Tradition lives in these mountains. The faith of a people is manifested in the numerous churches that dot the countryside and along Sparta's Main Street. From mountain traditions to modern expressions of faith, churches representing a broad array of Christian denominations are a source of strength and service and are always open to accepting new members into their community. They cooperate to support food and other ministries to the community. The agricultural economy once rested upon the willingness of neighbor to help neighbor and that tradition continues in local civic clubs and community organizations. One advantage of a small community is there is a place and appreciation for individuals willing to participate in community life. Since the mid-twentieth century, manufacturing has added to the local economic strength. Tradition joins with the modern industry in our small county. Dr. Grabow Pipes have been manufactured here since 1943. More recent industries manufacture wrought-iron furniture, packaging for many of the latest music CDs and DVD movie titles, products for the baking industry, custom rugs, and building trusses for construction. The county's newest industry is developing products from fiber-reinforced polymers. That industry and local leadership recently secured a $1.2 million Golden LEAF grant to help establish an advanced materials cluster with surrounding counties to further a sustainable, forward-reaching economy. That economy builds on a strong local educational system. Half of the instructional staff of Alleghany County public schools have masters level or higher degrees. The county's three elementary schools each have programs for 3- and 4-year old youngsters. The schools stay up with technology. All classrooms are Internet connected. The high school boasts a cyber campus that provides distant-learning opportunities and technology training. Advanced education is available at the Wilkes Community College satellite campus. The Blue Ridge Business Development Center offers office space for new businesses and technology support for local business and industry. Medical services are centered around Alleghany Memorial Hospital. It provides inpatient, and outpatient services, and a 24-hour physician staffed emergency room. The emergency room and surgical ward were recently renovated and expanded. The Alleghany Wellness Center offers a modern fitness center and year-round indoor pool and emphasizes the positive ways individuals can maintain health. Complementing these medical and health centers, professionals offer massage, rehabilitation services and other therapies. The community may be small by some standards, but it is well rounded and can always find a place of involvement for newcomers as well as old timers. 13

For the casual diner, remember this is the south. That means good home cooking. Bread means choice that usually includes biscuits or cornbread. Unless otherwise requested, tea is iced and sweet - although hot tea and tea room fare is growing in popularity. Fried chicken, fried fish and even fried okra are almost ubiquitous.

Speaking of fish, this may be the mountains, but we know seafood. Whether from a mountain stream just down the road or from the sea at the other end of the state, flounder, trout, shrimp, oysters, the best hush puppies are easy to find. This may be the mountains, but it's still North Carolina, and the old North State means barbecue whether pulled, chopped or falling off ribs, on a plate or in a sandwich, with slaw, either red or white. Just because it's North Carolina, doesn't mean we can't cook a good New York strip, t-bone or prime rib. And just because we are the mountains, doesn't mean we can't offer variety. Tea, iced and hot, or coffee, regular, decaf, espresso or a latte. Soup and sandwich on fine china or for take out. Fried squash and fried pickles. Chicken and the lightest dumplings. Tacos, quesadillas and guacamole. A big burger or a foot long dog with a cone of ice cream for dessert. And just because we are friendly, doesn't mean we don't offer fine dining. White linen, thin china, wine sipped from crystal and an evening where time is measured by good conversation and meal courses. When you come, come hungry. You won't leave that way.
