thepublishers I just gave my son the world: a hammer and screwdriver set. It’s the best $5 I’ve spent this week. I’m not sure how long this phase will last but for now he is in the dog shed pounding away at scrap pieces of lumber, and not nailing the dog’s ear (or his thumb) to a stud. I’m not sure why I thought the silly eco-friendly fairly traded ageappropriate toy set from the grocery store would have entertained this lad. I think he and Peyton played with it for an afternoon at most. The next day, they were back to raiding mommy and daddy’s junk drawer in the kitchen looking for the real tools. So I gave up. I shut the junk drawer one last time (after picking up the zip ties scattered on the floor), and asked Adam, “Shall we get your own hammer?” “Yes!” You would have thought I had given him the keys to the car. It was dark when we got home and even though it was past his bedtime, I let him pound away. Poor Nick the beagle. I’m not sure he was ready for a roommate. There’s an opening in the shed that is big enough for a hound and a child, but too small for their parents.
I would have loved a place like that. Forts are freedom. We all need forts. Inside this small space, the top of a picket fence board doomed to a future bonfire became a “fish head.” And look! That old broken fence board “looks like Tennessee!” Adam’s set comes with about a dozen driver bits. Pound the big Phillips head into the frozen clay and the marks look like “snowflakes.” When you give your kid the world, they sometimes surprise you and give you a wooden fish head with nails for eyes. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Simplicity A cracked and fluent heaven, and a brown earth. I had these, and my food and sleep—enough. —Louise Bogan Simplicity, like dignity, courage or humility, is one of those sacred words whose very mention I think uplifts. Yet simplicity and humility can seem the weaklings in a Yang society driven by material gain, and not simplistic living—a society that extends its admiration not to the humble Gandhis of life but rather to acquisition and power. While I’ve had my share of excess and overindulgence (Michelin-starred restaurants figure prominently), my heart belongs to simplicity, in particular to the simple bistro. One of my most memorable meals was a trattoria in central Italy, the name long forgotten, where we ordered from a blackboard, placing our trust in the chef, which is often the best way to go: an artichoke split open, lightly drizzled with olive oil and grilled; homemade pasta
imperceptibly seasoned, allowing the freshness of individual ingredients to speak loudest. And on it went from there. Thus, in celebration of the simple, as well as the seasonal (no artichokes in January), I offer one of life’s simplest and most perfect pairings: wine and cheese. Castello di Lucignano, Chianti Classico, Riserva, DOCG, 2003 – For those who like a bit of age without a crazy price tag, this 100 % Sangiovese is for you. The beautiful bricky brown color points to its age, a minimum of 27 months aging for Chianti riservas. Pop the cork and stick your nose to the neck of the bottle. You’ll get an immediate whiff of mushrooms. As the wine opens and evolves in your glass, the nose changes to notes of tobacco and cedar mixed with black cherry. That initial smell is the “bouquet”, which only comes through aging and is distinguished from the “aroma”, which has to do more with the grape varietals and the fruit. A wine’s bouquet is considered a tertiary aroma and develops as it ages in the bottle, whereas aroma is evident even in
very young wines; think Beaujolais Nouveau. Good, mature wines will have complex bouquets. $25 or, case price $19/bottle. And for the perfect pairing— which need not be anything more fancy than a rustic, crusty loaf of bread, preferably fresh from the oven, wine and cheese—try Caciocavallo Provola with your new friend, Castello di Lucignano Chianti. While not a Tuscan cheese, these two still make a good marriage. Caciocavallo, which means “cheese on horseback,” gets its name from the way in which the cheese is tied together with a rope in a pear shape then hung over a wooden board to drain and age. A drawn-curd, sheep’s milk cheese from southern Italy, it dates back at least to 500 BC when Hippocrates first wrote of its pungent gustatory pleasures. Delicious earthy flavors that complement the aged Sangiovese beautifully. Simple perfection. Come see the French countryside! May - Loire Valley, Vineyards & Chateaux. Sept - Paris! A FANTASTIC
FAIRYLAND
JANUARY 2014
Blue Ridge LIFE

JUST BECAUSE YOUR LITTLE GIRL GROWS UP, DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO STOP MAKING FAIRIES. When Sherry Leavitt of Greenwood started making little wooden fairies and fairy houses for her daughter Sabrina to play with, she had no idea she’d still be making them more than ten years later. “I started when my daughter was littler; I used to make them for her, and I was a nanny for a family in Batesville and I used to make them for all the kids I watched. And they just loved them, but I never had really gone past my circle of friends,” says Sherry. “Then my daughter got older and I had more time, so I started playing and just started creating all this stuff. And I thought, ‘I want to share this with more people now’.” Decorated with natural materials, such as wooden bases and acorn caps for hats, repurposed fabrics and bright flowers, each figurine embodies a unique personality while remaining relatively eco-friendly – you wouldn’t expect any less from an environmentally-conscious creature such as a woodland fairy. “I take my daughter’s old cute clothes that she doesn’t want anymore that have a cute pattern and I save them and cut them out and use them,” says Sherry, who admits dressing and decorating each one takes at least an hour. She doesn’t mind putting so much of her time into what she’s creating though, knowing that someone somewhere will love every feather, flower and sparkle.

“Each one takes a long time, just with the time that you glue it and trying to find all the right things that are going to go perfectly with that particular one,” Sherry explains. “You never know how they’re going to turn out. Each one is different.”
Sherry has been building her collection since the last time she sold her work at the Holiday Market in Charlottesville during last year’s holiday season. Not only did she participate in this year’s farmers market again, but an official Etsy account is currently under construction as well. And since every fairy is its own work of art, each one will be photographed for purchase. Websites like Etsy that highlight handmade arts and crafts created by artists around the world have been great for small businesses and locals like Sherry, (who confesses to being a complete introvert), to spread the word about their product at a much larger scale than just their surrounding area. “I also put at the bottom, ‘Create your own!,’ so you choose your color hair and length, and straight or curly, and the color of the clothes and all that,” says Sherry, explaining the range of features. Looking over literature and folklore through history, the concept of the “fairy” is also quite varied. From the Tooth Fairy to Tinkerbell. From Mercutio’s chilling monologue in Romeo and Juliet depicting Queen Mab as a hag, invading dreams and spreading darkened desires, to the polar opposite and more commonly portrayed character in modern stories, such as Disney’s “fairy godmother” who offers protection and nuggets of intellectual wisdom and existential guidance – (I actually wouldn’t mind one of those). Sherry has really created her own category of fantasy with her fairies and their houses, inadvertently carrying on the tradition of the tall tales and folklore from which fairies originated (just kidding kids, fairies are totally real). The whimsical, compact, world represents innocence and ingenuous entertainment and enjoyment. And even though she’s not making these playthings for her own child anymore, she finds genuine joy in constructing these crafts for children everywhere. “Kids are so fun and they bring out the best in you,” says Sherry. “It’s more of a hobby now, but I’d like to turn it into more than that if I could.” So go online, browse through the multitude of magic, choose something Sherry’s created, or make your own world, because who wouldn’t love their very own fairyland? 3 HIDDEN DANGERS FROM SUNLIGHT THAT ENTERS YOUR HOME.
UV Rays, Infrared Heat, & Visible Light are destroying everything inside your home. They also have an impact on your family’s health.
TRUTHS
MYTHS
• UV Rays are solely responsible for sun damage and fading • Conventional window treatments such as blinds or curtains stop fading • Double pane/LowE windows filter enough damaging rays to prevent fading • Only direct sunlight causes significant damage
• 3 types of sun rays are responsible for fading: UV, Infrared, & Visible Light. • Closed Blinds/Curtains still allow damaging rays inside your home. • Double pane/LowE windows can filter some UV Rays, but reject very little if any of the Infrared or Visible light.
SOLUTION: 3M™ Window Films installed by Clear View Window Tinting
• Reject 99.9% of UV Rays, up to 97% Infrared, & up to 85% visible light • Applied to existing windows, so they’re filtering 24/7—365 days a year. • Are very light & low in reflectivity. You literally can see through them better than clear glass.

William Groah of Augusta County snapped this shot from the Afton Overlook. With temps hovering right around the freezing mark that weekend, rain falling from warmer air up above froze on contact, leaving an icy layer on the trees below. A phenomenon called cold air damming trapped clouds and cold air close to the ground, which is why you can barely see the mountain tops peeking over the lower cloud deck. His photo got a lot of buzz online. If you’d like a reprint, hit him up at draft169@yahoo.com

Applying and qualifying for real estate tax relief
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
New Year’s resolutions come in the form of kicking habits, losing weight, and saving money. Perhaps saving money may be the easier one to tackle; especially when there are many tax saving advantages to those who own real estate. Besides the well known mortgage interest deduction, there are tax relief programs for Nelson County Residents who apply and qualify. May you kick off the New Year with one of these tax saving opportunities. Relief for the elderly and disabled: Who? The minimum age for an elderly applicant is 65. A disabled applicant is an individual who has been declared 100% disabled by the Social Security Board. Qualifications? Applicant must occupy the home as a primary residence. The total household income of everyone living in the home cannot exceed $50,000. Income sources include savings, retirement, social security,
and all other sources. If applicant has a family member living with them, than the first $6,000 of that person’s income is exempt from the calculation. Net worth cannot exceed $100,000; the home and 1 acre of land are excluded from the net worth calculation. Savings? Tax relief is based on a sliding scale and provides a 10-80% savings. When? Submit application between January 2 and February 15, 2014. Yearly application is required as tax relief is based on fluctuating variables such as income and assets. Exemption for disabled veterans: Who? Applicant must reside in the home as a primary residence and be certified as a veteran and 100% disabled. The US Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency must provide a letter to certify that the applicant is 100% disabled. A surviving spouse (of a 100% disabled veteran) may also qualify if

the veteran died after Jan. 1, 2011. Savings? Qualifying applicant will receive total exemption from paying real estate taxes on the house and 1 acre home site. When? Can be submitted anytime. However, it is best to submit early in the year before tax bills are mailed. Once qualified the program automatically renews. Land use eligibility and savings: Who? Residents with qualifying acreage; land calculated after subtracting 1 acre home site. Qualifications? Agricultural; minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of plants or animals such as beef cattle, poultry, hay, etc… Horticultural, minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of fruits, vegetables, nursery, or floral products, etc… Forest; 20 acre minimum devoted to tree growth (can be timbered) Savings? Some tax payers have had their tax bill cut in half; savings is variable as it is dependent upon the land classification and

values. Note: Repayment of savings (up to past 6 years) can occur in the form of a roll back tax penalty if the land use is changed. For example, land that is taken out of land use and subdivided for residential purposes would be subject to the penalty. When? Applications are typically due by Dec. 31st for review by the land use committee in February. Non refundable application fee is $50 per parcel plus 25 cent per acre. Renew every 6 years upon renewal notice. Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-263-7070 for additional information or applications. May you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

JANUARY 2014
I experienced a personal triumph yesterday. I achieved a goal that I had set for myself. It was not a financial goal, although such would have been easier to accomplish. It was a personal goal, a physical goal, one that only I could achieve. Some background. In addition to photography, I am also a ski instructor. Photography slows down during the winter months so I fill in the gap by teaching skiing. For the upcoming season, the resort where I teach instituted a fitness test for all instructors as part of the rehire process. Such is not unusual. Many ski resorts throughout the country are doing the same thing. It is to make sure that instructors can meet the physical requirements of the position. After all, skiing is a very active sport. So I took the test, and despite the fact that I had exercised, lost over fifty pounds since last January, and did a lot of hiking, I failed. I thought I was ready. But I wasn’t ready enough. Oh how I hate failure! The examiner gave me a series of exercises to perform over a period of one month, and then return to retake the test. I was devastated. Why me? I was prepared, or so I thought. Everybody else seemed to have passed. Did I really want to teach skiing this year? Maybe it’s time to give up the profession and to Hell with the stupid test. I was angry, frustrated, and did a such a great job of feeling sorry for myself that I should have won a prize. I vented my feelings on one of my dearest friends. Of course I promptly and sincerely apologized, and lucky for me we are still close friends. There is a lot of truth to the saying that a friend sees you as you really are, and likes you anyway. I calmed down. I love skiing and I love teaching; I knew what I had to do. If someone was to ask me what is my strongest attribute, without hesitation I would say it is persistence. Here’s an example. Last night I played a game of Sudoku (I love the game). Normally I can solve a “Difficult” puzzle in

about forty five minutes (often less). But the puzzle I had last night was one of the toughest I had ever experienced. Nothing in my bag of tricks worked. After about two and a half hours and several trial solutions (educated guesses) that resulted in the dreaded “blank square”, I finally solved the puzzle. It was ugly, but I solved it. Persistence is also how I got through college while enduring many setbacks and disappointments in my undergraduate and graduate degree programs, but I achieved both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Engineering. Sometimes I think I am persistent to the point to where it does me more harm than good. But giving up is something that is abhorrent to me. I feel like such a loser. And that’s what I feel when I experience failure. Maybe that’s the reason why I lash out – not that such excuses any bad behavior on my part. One of the exercises I was told to perform was to walk at least 150 minutes per week, which I did faithfully for the entire month. Since I live on top of a mountain, a two mile walk includes both uphill and downhill terrain. Who needs a treadmill. Sometimes I would walk in the valley where the terrain is generally flat. But most of the time I walked on top of the mountain. I often walked to the very top of a steep trail, and when I did so I thought only of the re-test. I wanted so much to pass the exam. So yesterday I took my re-test. And I passed! I was ecstatic! I wanted to tell the world. I accomplished the goal I had set for myself, and I felt great. Perhaps some of you may ask why I am making such an ado about a test that an average person in good health can easily pass. To answer that, I am sixty two years old, I smoked much of my life but have now been an ex-smoker for over ten years, and for the past several years I was very much overweight. I overcame all of these challenges, and with effort and persistence, I accomplished a goal that would have been impossible a year ago. – Paul Purpura

WORK HARD. PLAY HARD. LIKE A JAZZ MAN. As an Assistant Professor of Music in the Center for Worship at Liberty University and a nationally recognized jazz musician, Vince Lewis doesn’t really have to distinguish between working and playing. “I’d say I probably have a guitar in my hand, between teaching and practicing, fifty or sixty hours a week at least,” longtime Amherst resident, Lewis calculates. And that doesn’t even include performance time.

Headlining in festivals and concerts with the likes of Dave Brubeck, B.B. King and Mundell Lowe, playing in venues such as the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach, the Smithsonian Institute and the Kennedy
Center, and being featured and praised in countless reputable music publications doesn’t seem to have inflated Lewis’s ego at all – even though it should have. On the contrary, Lewis has recently started teaching private lessons at Blue Star Music in Lovingston, alongside local celebrity, Joe Madison. “I don’t really push my music on anybody. A lot of the people I teach don’t even really know. Sometimes they know I play concerts and stuff, and sometimes they just know I’m the guy that’s showing them where to put their fingers,” says Lewis, who started taking lessons at age five. Unbeknownst to many, Lewis has not only been performing and recording with the best in the business, but he’s also received countless awards for his talent and contributions to the musical arts community.

“I’m just as happy if I have a beginning student, and all they wanna be able to do is play in church on Sunday and play a few chords, and they accomplish that. That’s wonderful,” says Lewis. Modest though he is, Lewis has also taught several musicians who have progressed a bit farther than chords. “I’ve got one student, a bass player in Nashville, who just won a Grammy. I’ve got a former guitar student who’s on tour with Josh Groban. And I’ve got a student who got his Doctorate in Jazz guitar performance who’s teaching in a university out west.” If that’s not enough, Lewis is working on a new collaboration record due to release at the end of January with Barbara Martin, a jazz and blues singer with her own list of impressive achievements. And in his spare time – which, let’s be honest, there can’t be much of – Lewis loves just being at home in Amherst. “It’s a great relief for me to be able to go out and play a concert at a big venue and get into the fast moving and the stress, and then pull back and be back out in the country and be back at my house with acres and cows and deer,” says Lewis.

from The Beech Grove Salon! “This is a very energy intensive operation,” says Taggart. But these guys are all about utilizing opportunities. Take their ingredients, for instance. They work with local businesses, such as Bold Rock Cidery in Nellysford, and purchase pomace (*vocab fact: pomace is a mushy solid consisting of seeds, stems, and skins that remain after the apples have been pressed). Even though the majority of the juice is already on its way to becoming Bold Rock Hard Cider, there’s still enough juice left to contribute to flavoring Woods Mill Distillery’s Apple Brandy. Hitting the ABC store shelves within the next couple months, this 80 proof locally-made liquor is sure to be a crowd pleaser. And even though it’s too late to give as a Christmas present, it will always be fun to drink and share because it’s made by a couple of guys just down the road. “I sweep the floors and sign the tax returns, he builds the equipment and dumps the waste, we kinda do it all,” says Taggart. “It’s like any job, there are things that you don’t like about it, but by and large, this is what we wanna do when we grow up.” BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC
Squirrel Winter Blues One of my more favorite pastimes is hunting. Yes, I am armed but more often than not, I am more a sightseer and lover of nature/life than the taker of it. Etched in my brain are volumes of animal encounters I have collected from some 40 years of hunting in the Blue Ridge wilderness. Just recently I was on Three Ridges hunting ‘buck deer’, as my son Jack calls them, and at daybreak heard a mass movement of animals moving down the mountain towards me. Thinking it could be my nemesis, a huge 9-point ‘buck deer’ that has eluded me now for some 2 months or so, I readied my weapon. Instead, it was individual squirrels scurrying down the mountain to an orchard some distance below me. Within 15 minutes or so, I heard the breaking of leaves now moving from the orchard back up the mountain to my stand. The site of a colony of squirrels with softball size, Pink Lady apples in their mouths was both amusing and curious to say the least. It made sense, however, since their main food source acorns, was severely limited this year due to a cold, wet spring. Acorns are monoecious meaning that both the male and female reproductive organs are on the same plant. Reproduction occurs with rising spring temperatures. With wind as the primary mechanism for pollination, a combination of rain, humidity and a late freeze can have a devastating effect on acorn production - such as what appeared to have happened this year. Coupled with a 17 year outbreak of cicadas which lay their eggs primarily in the tender new growth of oak trees, the end result is literally zero acorn production for this year. Granted cicadas were not at the 2-3,000 foot altitude nor were they as numerous as every acorn on every tree, a population that actually could be considered as noise pollu-
tion must have some negative effect on the acorn production down in the lower hills. I cannot remember the last time such a shortage of food has occurred. Last year I can readily remember slipping and falling down in that same area on an abundance of acorns. This year, nothing. Not one. For a crop that so many animals depend on, this is serious news. Deer, bear, squirrels, blue jays, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse and many other animals depend heavily on the protein found in this nut for sustenance – in particular during a particularly cold winter which appears we are experiencing now. Wildlife sightings are, and will be, higher than normal this year as animals must move further out of their habitats and search harder for secondary food sources – often times coming in closer contact with humans. This equation gets a lot worse for these animals when a deep blanket of snow covers the ground and temperatures plummet. The end result is not good for many, many animals. That is where we come in. Our furry friends this year will depend on us heavily for survival – in particular during cold snaps and in the event a deep snow falls on the region. While I know most of us aren’t in the habit of trying to attract deer and bears to our homes, if you are interested in feeding the birds and smaller wildlife, whole corn and black oil sunflower seeds are two of the best. Both offer food to a very large population of animals and both are relatively weather tolerant (they don’t rot that easily). Obviously there are other food sources that are good as well but these two are the top ones that come to my mind. Bottom line is that without some really good luck from Mother Nature, many animals will be negatively impacted this year. How bad will be determined how bad the winter months are.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I hear the flu season is coming. What can I do to be prepared? Influenza season is coming, as it always does at this time of the year. Influenza is a contagious infection of the lungs that can cause a mild to serious illness. It is different and much more serious than the typical colds that we see at the same time. The joke I have heard is that the first day of the flu you are scared you are going to die, the second day you are scared you are not going to die! Symptoms may include the sudden onset of fever, body ache, congestion, coughing, sore throat, headache and fatigue. Complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis and ear infections. Every year people die from influenza. The best way to protect your self is to get a flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. Pregnant women, young children, older people, and people with certain chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and heart disease are at increased risk of
A member of Sentara Healthcare.
serious flu-related complications, so getting a yearly flu vaccine is especially important for them. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. It might cause mild side effects, such as achiness and a sore arm, which might be mistaken for the flu. These side effects usually go away in a day or 2. It takes about 2 weeks for the flu shot to protect you, so you might get exposed to the flu and get sick before the shot takes effect. Sometimes there are strains of influenza that are not included in the flu shot. You might get exposed to a non-influenza virus that causes similar symptoms. Anyone can get influenza. You might get better quickly, or you might get serious complications. You might also spread the flu to others around you, especially those at high risk. Be sure to get you flu shot to protect yourself and those around you! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Invest in Your Health!
By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Wellness Center
The Value of Health There is still heated conversation in the media about the Affordable Care Act. Some good news. Some negative news. What is missing in the discussion about health care is what each of us has to do individually that will have a positive financial impact on the health care industry, on our health and on our community. And, we will feel and function better. Good health is taking personal responsibility for yourself and your choices. No one likes to hear or read that because it usually means a change in our habits or behavior (“by golly, if I want to eat the entire box of cookies I will. I’ve earned it today.”) The US economy is slammed by PREVENTABLE chronic diseases. Here are some numbers (Kenneth, 2008, Thorpe, 2006): 133 million people have one or more chronic conditions. Two trillion healthcare expenditures are related to chronic conditions. Chronic conditions have driven 96% of the cost of Medicare spending and 83% of Medicaid spending since 1980. Some of the preventable chronic
conditions include musculoskeletal conditions, depression, sleeping problems, fatigue, chronic pain, high cholesterol, arthritis, hypertension, obesity, anxiety. In addition, preventable chronic conditions are responsible for half the deaths and projected to account for two thirds of the deaths in the next twenty five years (World Economic Forum,2008). Eighty percent of heart disease and eighty percent of type 2 diabetes can be prevented. Your health is your investment in yourself. How much do you value yourself? Making choices to get adequate sleep, eat nutritious foods and to exercise regularly will reduce the health care dollars that you and your family spend each year. As a society, costs will be managed if we begin to manage our health. The research is out there. When I “Googled” value in health. 2,090,000,000 results popped up; article after article reciting research on this topic. As we start a new year, let’s begin with a new strategy. Each month this year, I’ll offer you a different strategy to meet that goal. Happy New Year!
