thepublishers We’re down a dog. And she’s the one we hardly ever talked about. Martina came to us as a rescue before the kids were born. Not an intact rescue, but as a jack russell/ beagle mix with a crooked snout and a crusted-over eye. It was clear that something or someone had bashed her face in and left her to deal with it. After several visits to the vet, we determined the young pup would live in spite of her injuries. Martina, named after the tennis great, would be our one-eyed wonder dog. She became our late Jerky’s sister and together, they would wake up each morning and do a lap around the pasture after doing their business. Lord knows what they talked about. They, along with Nick, were the best of buds, even when Angelo the surprise kitty showed up one day. The four were inseparable and Martina quickly became the leader of the pack. Her howl. It was so severely messed up, probably because of her injury, that it always tickled us. Always, except for when she’d wake us up early in the morning smelling deer. Ah-woo?! We lost Jerky to a freak deer-chasing accident a few years ago when the kids were still in diapers. Angelo

Martina and Adam, Summer 2015

went off into the woods behind our house one day and never came back. That left Nick and Martina and together they moved with us to our new place last year. Martina ruled the roost. If she trotted to the creek, Nick would follow. Lately, she began to sleep in longer and we noticed her hearing was slipping away. Her last living moments were near the driveway, napping under a freakishly warm December sun. We chose a special spot by the creek for her grave and that’s when the kids realized that our time on Earth is finite. Adam offered the following eulogy: “Martina, you’re in heaven now. You’re in a cage and a little dirty but you can get out now.” We love you, Martina. Yvette and Tommy Stafford JANUARY 2016 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Sustainable, organic, biodynamic and what it all means, Part I

difference between organic, organically grown, sustainable, natural and biodynamic wines can get confusing; here’s a quick crash course. The terms organic practice, organic grapes and certified organic are not synonymous. Many of the growers I work with practice organic farming but are not certified. Certification costs money and makes no difference to me, as long as these growers’ practices are largely organic. Easy to do in the south of France, land of the strong summer sun and the Mistral. And why would they not, when pesticides and herbicides only destroy the land on which they depend, and has often sustained multiple generations? However, when I see “made with organic grapes” on the label, I’m wary. These could be great wines or it could be a marketing ploy. Organic is trendy; growers can raise prices. And wines made with organicallygrown grapes may include small amounts of additives used as stabilizers to preserve the wine. There is more to wine than grapes. There is yeast, sometimes added sugar, added preservatives, and all kinds of fining

If all life moves inevitable towards its end, then we must, during our own, colour it with our colours of love and hope. — Marc Chagall Love and hope, for me, always spring most readily from the natural world. Right now, a white, blue wind blows, pushing forth this brand, new year, but cloaks within the warmer breeze of spring. Birds fly to and fro, and know, like I know, that spring will come again. But hope lies not only in spring’s soft touch, but also in our wise and silent winter. And perhaps, as my mother says, it’s enduring winter that allows us to feel we’ve “earned the spring.” If you love the natural world, what better reason to support organic farming? The wines at Basic Necessities are now about 60 % organic (or biodynamic), but of those, only half are certified organic. Deciphering the

and mouth-feel agents including animal products. That’s right, now you know why you see vegan wines advertised. If you want the absence of pesticides, learn which producers practice organic viticulture or look for “certified organic.” Certified organic wines must pass a certification inspection every year. No synthetic pesticides or chemical herbicides are used, no sulfites added. No GMOs. And the word on sulfites: all wine naturally contains some sulfites. Sulfites are on grape skins and in plants like onions and garlic. Therefore, even organic wines will have sulfites, though minimal. The biggest reason I opt for organic is not so much for my own health (although grapes are one of the most heavily sprayed of fruits and veggies) but for the health of this beautiful planet we love! Hochar, 2009 (organic) – From the storied Château Musar, arguably my favourite wine, the single vineyard Hochar offers the same perfect pitch of taste without the sticker shock. Notes of dark plum, coffee, nutmeg, figs and dates. Breathe in the Mediterranean in winter’s midst. $32.99

STAUNTON

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

Ingredients for elderberry tea are hand mixed at Kate Simon’s home. She and Wendy Gray own Herban Moonshine, a Staunton-based company that sells “all things healing” including a spritzer that Kate is testing on Wendy below.

THE REMEDY 1 PART NATURE. 2 PARTS FRIENDS.

“I think people, more and more, are looking for natural ways to help themselves with natural remedies and natural medicines,” said Wendy Gray who co-owns with Kate Simon, Herban Moonshine, a Staunton-based business and Etsy store. Wendy’s day job is at Polyface Farms in Swoope, the operation run by self-described “lunatic farmer” Joel Salatin. Some of that way of thinking may have rubbed off on Wendy, so when she and good friend Kate got to talking, they figured Herban Moonshine should be a business and not just a hobby. “It just happened very fast. We didn’t expect for it to blow up so fast,” Wendy said. The two women have daughters roughly the same age (Wendy’s daughter, Madeline, is 9 and Kate’s daughter, Fiona, is 7) who love playing together, so finding time to work on their recipes and remedies was a little bit simpler because the girls could entertain themselves. And while Wendy contributed the knowledge she’d learned from working for years at Polyface, Kate brought to the table a different catalogue of information that she’d learned in a very different way. “My mom was always doing natural healthcare, so I grew up doing this a little bit,” said Kate, whose mother is a Master Gardner and has been helping her daughter plant herbs to use in their products. Wendy says they’re lucky to be able to get some materials from Polyface and, in addition to Kate’s small herb garden, they’ve partnered with Dancing Star Farms in Churchville to grow even more of what they need, but with things happening so fast, they don’t always have exactly what they need at exactly the right time. So the rest, they forage. continued on page 14

HERBAN MOONSHINE IS BORN IN THE OUTDOORS Step 1: Hike up the mountain and gather clear spring water in buckets and jugs. Step 2: State your intentions, say your blessings and set the water out (after dark) in the full moon to absorb the energy of the month’s full moon. Step 3: Wake up before dawn to bring the water inside. Step 4: Use the Moon Water (which is boiled for safety) for spritzers, tinctures and syrups. Step 5: Watch them sell like real moonshine.

Using Rosemary Gladstar’s website and the folks at Polyface for reference, Wendy and Kate have studied up on local plants and their healing properties. “We just jump in our cars and ride to the mountain and look and see,” said Wendy. “Sometimes we don’t even know what we’re going to make. We just go to the woods and see what we can find and make what we can out of it.” It was just September when Wendy and Kate first put their products in Made; By the People, For the People, a modern general store in Staunton that sells locally made and sourced products and owned by Corrie Park, a girlfriend of Wendy’s.

14

Blue Ridge LIFE

JANUARY 2016

“And it started selling like crazy!” said Wendy. So since Wendy, a marketing professional, had experience running an Etsy store and Kate, a professional photographer, could take some online store-quality product images in no time, they hastily got their Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/ shop/HerbanMoonshine) up in time for holiday shoppers. “And we just started making some money! We’re so excited!” exclaimed Wendy. “Before, we were just pulling together what money we had and trying to spend as little as possible, but we’re starting to finally see a profit. We can’t live off it yet, but it’s fun.” And with their beautifully-photographced and

cleverly-named products (like Calm the F**k Down Spritzer, Go Smudge Yourself, Hibernation (Tea) Bundle, Bonfire In A Bottle Spritzer and their ever-popular — though quite plainly named — Elderberry Syrup), it’s no wonder Herban Moonshine is becoming an instant success. But the real difference is who they are and what their products really are — and what they’re doing. “We’re kind of trying to take into consideration that it’s not just aromatherapy and it’s not just herbal healing,” said Kate. “We’re taking into consideration your whole person and your whole being. Everything is connecting and we’re trying to recognize the connections.” BRL

Students creep forward as Ryan Blosser reveals the ease of access to one of his wells at Dancing Star Farm. Comfrey, picked from the kitchen garden, is fed to the pigs (below left). Fed by strategically-grown, to just the proper size, locust trees, minimal chopping is required to fuel the outdoor oven (below right)

As a project manager for the Allegheny Mountain Institute at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, some people might think Trevor Piersol gets his fill of farming from his day job. But those people would be wrong. “My passion is growing food and sustainable agriculture,” said Trevor, one of the founding partners of the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute (SPI). “It can be applied to setting up your farm and how to have a regenerative farming system that rebuilds the health of the land and the soil. And the great part is that it’s holistic. It looks at every part of the system.”

In his spare time, Trevor works with SPI’s other cofounders — Ryan Blosser (executive director of a community farm called Community Grows and owner of Dancing Star Farm) and Ted Butchart (a naturopathic physician) — to promote the ideas of permaculture, teach workshops and write about how and why they do what they do. Oh and they can also use the institute to meet other “permaculture nerds” like themselves, added Ryan. Permaculture, or the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient, is not a new concept, but it is catching on in the valley and all around central Virginia.

18

Blue Ridge LIFE JANUARY 2016

“Since moving to the valley over the last decade, it’s so exciting to see how many people start to apply this work in their own lives in Harrisonburg and Staunton and Nelson County and even Waynesboro and of course Charlottesville,” said Ryan, who discovered permaculture in 2002 while living in Hawaii. “It blows my mind to see how the projects keep adding up and at some point we’re going to reach a critical mass where it can only mean good things for the valley. That’s what keeps me excited.” continued on page 20

SPI was founded as a way not just for the founders to practice permaculture, but to spread the word about how they do what they do and why. Most surprising might be that you don’t to live on a farm to participate in the permaculture culture. While it’s true that Ryan has a farm (and that’s where they teach many of their courses), Trevor lives in the heart of downtown Staunton. He has a tiny plot of land where he can grow some herbs and veggies and a few egg-laying chickens to eat the table scraps. But their downtown living space exemplifies the system of zones taught by permaculture in which the things you need most often are the things that are closest to you. “Our herb garden for our culinary herbs is just outside of our kitchen so we can step out and grab our herbs for our breakfast or soup without having to go very far,”

20

Blue Ridge LIFE

JANUARY 2016

said Trevor. “The vegetable garden is a little bit further and the chickens [are] a little bit further still.” And the concept of zones can apply even to the community at large and each person’s individual “foodshed.” For example, Zone 1 might be a personal garden, Zone 2 could be the farmers market and Zone 3 would be the grocery store. SPI is about teaching these methods as well as the dos and don’ts of farming. It’s about creating a community. “Meeting Trevor and Ted and finding folks to nerd out with about permaculture, we got so excited,” said Ryan. “We wanted to find a way to spend time writing about it, researching, creating permaculture labs and our own projects and then teaching it, because we really just like to spend time together. SPI is about finding your community and finding a way to leverage that community to help spread this word and this work.” BRL

NELLYSFORD

[ nelson county ]

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

Mae Tyree has been cooking and serving French food for a decade and a half, but she’s never had the chance to been to France. In fact, she’s never had the chance to leave the country — or even the East Coast. But the restaurant where she works is Basic Necessities. And Basic’s patrons are not the average eaters of cooked cuisine. Frequenters of the little Nellysford staple have been steadily donating toward the “Send Our Staff to Provence” fund. Using a GiveForward account, the staff of Basic Necessities hopes to raise $60,000 “I’ve had this dream for five years now,” said Basic Necessity owner and annual trips to France leader, Kay Pfaltz. “I thought about taking one staff member a year, but I thought ‘how great would it be just to have the whole staff.”

Clara Wilson is one of several employees at Basic Necessities hoping to visit Provence. If you’d like to help out, visit their GiveForward.com fundraising page, “Send our staff to Provence.”

BON VOYAGE? Basic Necessities is staying put but its staff is hoping to take a field trip to France.

Kay said it was actually some frequent customers attending a wine tasting who had the idea to crowdsource the trip. She’s grateful to her patrons and excited to give her staff the chance of a lifetime. “For some, I think it will be momentous,” she said. “Like our chef who knows French cuisine so well and the French mentality and the French culture, it will have such meaning. I think it will be a dream come true for all of them, but for each in a different way.” Mae, who just applied for her very first passport, said she’s excited about getting a stamp in her book, but is more excited about learning where Basic was born. “You try to create this atmosphere, this ambience, for your customers, but it’s all through what Kay tells me about this place,” she said. “But this will be the actual place that Basic Necessities actually came from.” BRL

Oh, what a relief!

Real estate tax relief for qualifying Nelson County residents

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

The holidays are fun, but the aftermath may leave you looking for a way to save. Savings, in the form of real estate tax relief, may be just around the corner for some residents of Nelson County. When there are only a few things that are certain such as life, death, and taxes, it sure is a relief to know that discounts could be on the horizon for those who apply and qualify. May you kick off the New Year with one of these tax saving opportunities. Relief for the elderly and disabled: Who? The minimum age for an elderly applicant is 65. A disabled applicant is an individual who has been declared 100% disabled by the Social Security Board. Qualifications? Applicant must occupy the home as a primary residence. The total household income of everyone living in the home cannot exceed $50,000. Income sources include savings, retirement, social security,

and all other sources. If applicant has a family member living with them, then the first $6,000 of that person’s income is exempt from the calculation. Net worth cannot exceed $100,000; the home and 1 acre of land are excluded from the net worth calculation. Savings? Tax relief is based on a sliding scale and provides a 10-80% savings. When? Submit application between January 2 and February 15, 2016. Yearly application is required as tax relief is based on fluctuating variables such as income and assets. Exemption for disabled veterans: Who? Applicant must reside in the home as a primary residence and be certified as a veteran and 100% disabled. The US Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency must provide a letter to certify that the applicant is 100% disabled. A surviving spouse (of a 100% disabled veteran) may also qualify if

the veteran died after Jan. 1, 2011. Savings? Qualifying applicant will receive total exemption from paying real estate taxes on the house and 1 acre home site. When? Can be submitted anytime. However, it is best to submit early in the year before tax bills are mailed. Once qualified the program automatically renews. Land use eligibility and savings: Who? Residents with qualifying acreage; land calculated after subtracting 1 acre home site. Qualifications? Agricultural; minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of plants or animals such as beef cattle, poultry, hay, etc… Horticultural, minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of fruits, vegetables, nursery, or floral products, etc… Forest; 20 acre minimum devoted to tree growth (can be timbered) Savings? Some tax payers have had their tax bill cut in half; savings is variable as it is dependent upon the land classifica-

tion and values. Note: Repayment of savings (up to past 6 years) can occur in the form of a roll back tax penalty if the land use is changed. For example, land that is taken out of land use and subdivided for residential purposes would be subject to the penalty. When? Applications are typically due by Dec. 31st for review by the land use committee in February. Non refundable application fee is $50 per parcel plus $0.25 per acre. Renew every six years upon renewal notice. Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-263-7070 for additional information or applications. May you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. AFTON

[ nelson county ]

STORY by RACHEL RYAN PHOTOGRAPHY by SHAY MUNROE

REINVENTION Silverback Distillery owner Denver Riggleman hits the reset button on his life after nearly losing it.

Eight days after his 45th birthday, Denver Riggleman found himself in the back of an ambulance, with a heart rate of 194 beats per minute and blood pressure through the roof. “I honestly thought every second was my last second,” he said. After a few nights in the University of Virginia Medical Center, doctors were able to get his heartbeat under control and Riggleman was allowed to go home. But his old life was gone. Riggleman said he spent the next five months wondering how things got so bad. A military man who played college football, he now weighed 274 pounds and couldn’t walk half a mile without gasping for air. “I was a big ball of fat-filled jelly when I went into the hospital,” he said. “I was the human equivalent of a jelly donut.”

Riggleman, a former defense contractor, moved to Afton from northern Virginia with his high school sweetheart, Christine, and their three daughters. Between the stress of his job and opening Silverback Distillery in 2013, Riggleman said he lost his way. “I had so much regret about how I had become the person I had become,” he said. Riggleman developed a game plan to get his life back on track, focusing on the mental, physical and spiritual sides of life. “I know that sounds funny but I was military so I had to mission plan my own health,” he said. To address his mental health, Riggleman began “showing love and gratitude to my family and realizing I had to slow down. Spiritually, he reconnected with “the man upstairs.” The physical aspect proved to be the toughest. continued on page 30

Riggleman started taking walks on the family’s 50-acre property in the Afton foothills. The first few weeks, he walked for 10 to 15 minutes. Then 20. Some days he thought his heart was going to explode. “I would be in tears because it was beating so hard I thought I was going to die,” Riggleman said. He walked through rain and mud. Then he ran. His daughters, Lauren, Abby and Lily, who he calls his “guardian angels” would workout with him. Pretty soon, the miles were adding up and the pounds were melting off. Along with exercising six days a week, Riggleman began adhering to a strict diet. No eating after 6 PM. No sugar or soda, but “massive amounts” of water. Lots of fiber and one grapefruit a day. And nothing massproduced. “Let me tell you, some days, it’s hard to find food. I’m actually scrounging for mushrooms,” he said laughing. Riggleman’s wife of 26 years, Christine, has witnessed the transformation. She said

it’s his mental and spiritual side that she has noticed the most. “He has a calmness about him, a happiness that’s radiating out of him,” she said. “He’s finding the simple joys in life. Just enjoying daily life.” One thing that hasn’t changed? Riggleman’s appreciation for a good drink. But he has doctors’ approval. Some of the doctors and nurses that cared for Riggleman during his stint at UVa Medical Center visited the distillery. “They even said it was okay for me to drink a little bit.” Riggleman said. “I do 1.5 ounces every other day or so.” He switches it up between the Beringei Vodka, Strange Monkey Gin, and Blackback White Whiskey, all produced at Silverback, of course. Nine months after his ambulance ride, Riggleman has lost 51 pounds and said he feels better than ever. “The ability to make liquor and live in this beautiful place here in Nelson County, I just wasn’t ready to die yet.” BRL

Caromont Farm is known for cheese. Goat cheese in particular. Gail Hobbs-Page and her husband moved to the 25 acre property in Esmont in 2007. And with 89 goats and two cheesemakers, they produce nearly thirty thousand pounds of cheese each year, shipping as far north as New York and as far south as New Orleans. But now they are branching out and keeping it on the farm. “We do just a few farm events and we keep getting requests for them,” said Hobbs-Page. “People want to come and see what we do and they really want to see the goats so we decided why not. So we are starting to open up the farm for various events. We are a working farm and that’s a very important part of this.” Music in the Meadow was one of the first events held at Caromont Farm this fall. Local jazz musicians, Peter Richardson and Drex Weaver, played Brazilian music in front of about 40 people. The crowd sat around fire pits and mingled on the brand new deck. Kids milled around the farm and got up close and personal with a few farm residents…the goats. continued on page 36

“It’s a little different from going to a fancy winery,” Hobbs-Page said laughing. “It’s a little grubbier and more rustic. It’s very laid back, nothin’ fancy.”

Blue Ridge LIFE JANUARY 2016

A chef by trade, Hobbs-Page is eager to use her 26 years of cooking experience to offer more opportunities for people to come check out her farm. There are plans for intimate dinners in the farm’s greenhouse and cooking classes throughout the winter months. “It’s agritourism,” said Hobbs-Page. “Come to the farm, have an experience and enjoy a really great time with people who are really doing it.” “It’s not just about us,” said Izzy Zechini, the events specialist for Caromont Farm. “It’s

about promoting tourism and promoting local food and small farming.” The first music in the meadow concert series was a success, and Hobbs-Page said she is looking forward to more Sundays of music and fellowship. “People kept saying, I just feel my blood pressure going down,” she said. “That is the greatest compliment you can give me. People are so stressed out from whatever. They come here and can experience what we experience every day.” BRL

By Shad C. Derozier Rutherford Law Group, PC

ACTION FOR ALL is a local non-profit that got a boost at a fundraiser hosted at Wild Wolf Brewing Company. The organization connects economically-disadvantaged kids with resources that help him them live active lives. Just in time for snowboard season!

When planning an estate, most parents distribute their assets equally among their children. If it’s their goal to be fair to each child, it does not necessarily mean leaving assets equally to each child. Sometimes special circumstances need to be taken into consideration. If parents have done lifetime gifting to one child, or have helped a child financially, but have not done that with their other children, they may or may not want the lifetime gift deducted from that child’s share. Sometimes a parent may want the child they helped to sign a promissory note, promising to pay back the amount borrowed. This way, if the debt isn’t paid back before the parents die, it likely will be payable to the parent’s estate and come out of that child’s share. A properly crafted estate plan does not need to be amended each time parents lend or gift money to a child. Instead, an estate plan that keeps a record of the gift or loan should be sufficient. Sometimes parents also wish to honor a child who has shown a great amount of assistance in caring for them in their later years. Some children will choose to have their parents live with them in order to help them more. Often, a parent may choose to express their gratitude to the child by leaving him or her a larger inheritance or a specific item or piece of property. For a child with lower income and/or a larger family to support, a parent may want to leave a larger share to that child, or even grandchildren, that need it the most. For that child who has worked the family farm for many years at a reduced level of compensation, parents will often leave them a larger portion of their assets, sometimes even the whole farm. If other assets exist, such as life insurance or investment accounts, parents will often leave those assets to the other children. Parents with a child that has special needs may choose to leave an unequal share to that child in a special needs trust, because that child may need it more than the others. Or perhaps, the child with special needs could not benefit much from an inheritance, and the parents choose to leave that child less than the others. Each family is unique, with different dynamics. The failure to plan usually creates unintended consequences, which is why one of the greatest gifts you can leave your family is a written plan incorporating your wishes. Appreciation is given to Attorney Carissa Giebel for contributing to this article.

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Adventure is Right in Front of You Another year is in the books and another begins. A cycle we’ve all seen before. Many will be making their resolutions and we hope one is to do more right out your front door. Resolutions are great for people that need to define goals and achievements. I applaud whatever the motivation is that gets you out to Embrace the Adventure.

This past year was a true roller coaster for me. I spent almost the entire year traveling around the state with races in just about every corner and never tired from the adventures. On the personal side, I lost my best buddy of 16 ½ years, Jake. I have to say we had a great run and made me realize even more that every day is a gift and make the most of every moment. Something I believe sinks in more as the years fly by.

The Virginia Off Road Series had another great season of mountain bike racing with over 20 events and 2,000+ participants. The competition was exciting

and some our new Champions were defined by only a few points. The new Youth component witnessed right at 100 kids racing and having fun with their friends and peers. Currently, we are in the midst of planning 2016 and there will be many new exciting races coming on the scene in our neck of the woods down in Lynchburg, Roanoke and Wintergreen.

Yes. Wintergreen will be taking it up a notch this summer with Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series presented by Bold Rock Hard Cider! (#BeBold) This will be a six-race points-based series including mountain biking and trail running events taking place on Memorial, Labor and Columbus Day weekends. There will be more than $4500 in cash and swag prizes being awarded through the series with a crowning of the King & Queen after the final races on Columbus Day weekend. Early registration will begin in January with more details to follow. This is going to add a whole new level of excitement

for off road racing up on the mountain! Keep your ears open as more information will be coming soon! Watch & Like our social media Facebook pages: Wintergreen Resort, Blue Ridge Life Magazine and the Virginia Off-Road Series for updates. Cliffhanger Challenge- Memorial day weekend. Music, Cider, Beer and BBQ fest, and Vendors
Summers End Fest- Labor Day weekend . Music, F & B, and Vendors
Trail Rodeo – Columbus Day weekend. Exciting New event. Details to come for this stage race
On the other side of Nelson County, we worked hand-in-hand with James River State Park on their first threerace series: Adventures on the James Games. This was a true adventure building these races from scratch, dealing with Mother Nature and just going with the flow (pardon the pun) of the James River. Devils Backbone Brewing Company was a great contributor and supporter of our races.

Blue Ridge Life was also great in their coverage bringing pictures and words to getting the excitement out there. Ed Ross-Clunis and Carrie Parker were our first King & Queen of the James. These two came out and fought hard against some tough competition to take the top podium spots. Congrats! We have confirmed the dates for next year (see below) and look forward to have another blast out at the incredible 1500 acre paradise nestled up against the James River.
2016 Adventures on the James Games March 5th Adventure Race (Scavenger hunt) April 23rd – Triathlon October 15th – Fall Festival and night time 5K trail run
So Embrace the Adventure and join us on all of our upcoming adventures this year. As Tom Bodet says ‘We’ll leave a light on for ya’. Happy New Years and get out there and make the most out of it!

Blue Ridge LIFE

JANUARY 2016

There is not a landscape that I have ever visited that does not show some signs of insect damage. Even the most pristine jobs employing the best in lawn and shrub care are constantly in a war with our winged and crawling foe. The keys to proper insect control have a lot to do with what you do in the off season while the insects are dormant. So while insecticides will work, their efficacy increases as you both decrease the overall tolerable numbers of insects in your lawn area and allow for better spray penetration by making calculated cuts during the off season. As we try to reduce the number of insecticides around our home, children and planet, here are some things to consider. Leaf litter around the garden and lawn harbors insects from year to year. Although this litter is great for mulching and overall plant growth, if insects are an issue, you should consider composting. The composting process involves intense heat that basically cooks insects and diseases to the point of yielding sterile black gold as an end product. Shredding leaves and twigs, piling them in your compost bin and adding in green organic matter and other decomposable kitchen waste will decrease your insect population and offer you an amazing by-product that will add value to your soil strata. Yes, it does take time, but if your objective is rich soil and beautiful plants, composting is your answer. In the end, all horticulturists agree that a healthy plant is the best defense against insects and disease outbreaks. Vegetable garden litter falls into this same category and is actually more of a haven than the aforementioned leaf litter. Consolidating to an area and burning or composting is the best solution.

Tree and shrub canopy is another huge factor for disease and insect control. Tight canopies increase humidity, decrease light and foster a haven for both insects and diseases. Dormant thinning cuts in your shrubs allow more air to circulate inside the canopy thereby decreasing humidity. This also allows the occasional spray to better penetrate the plants’ interior, especially when the vast majority of home sprayers are the pump kind that offer only leaf surface control. Commercial sprayers operate at 60 psi and can penetrate even the tightest canopy, however their price tag makes them pricey for the home gardener. These thinning cuts will compensate for the difference. The cuts are to be made now, in the dormant season, and should target crossing limbs and branches, low branches that touch the ground, suckers that grow long and straight inside the plant canopy and small, congesting twiggy growth. Keep in mind that these cuts will increase the vigor in the plant and will often spur greater flower production on the remaining branches. As for any remaining weeds in the flower beds, they should be removed now as some annual broadleaf weeds are a nurse plant for overwintering sucking insects like aphids, sustaining them and their eggs for months into the dormant season. These broadleaves go straight to the compost pile and add valuable green organic matter to the mix. Now is also a great time to clean up neighboring weedy debris that is in close proximity to your lawn. In the end, the less green overgrown real estate that can be removed on the outskirts of your lawn, typically areas where you would not spray or inspect during the growing season, will reduce your overall insect population and yield a Better Homes & Gardens landscape … or at least one you can be proud of.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, Last week I donated blood for the first time in many years. I was motivated by a friend whose wife had leukemia and needed hundreds of transfusions of blood and blood components before she died from the disease. In the US more than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day – that’s one every 2 seconds! There are many reasons why people need blood. Many people with cancer will need transfusions during their treatment. Sickle cell disease patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives. A single car accident victim can require many units of blood. This blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors. There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood so each donation can help save up to three lives. Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components only.

Donating blood is a simple process. You must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Every potential donor is given a miniphysical, checking their temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded. The actual blood donation typically takes about 10-15 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min. A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 8 weeks. All donated blood is tested for infectious diseases before it can be released to hospitals. Your gift of a blood donation will save lives. Someday another person’s blood donation might save your life. Blood can be donated locally through Virginia Blood Services or the Red Cross. Consider donating blood, you will be glad you did.
