thepublishers Peyton is much like her father when it comes to the weather. As she stared out the truck window the other day as we left the grey and brittle farm, she sighed and spoke in her best Victorian, “Why must it be cold in winter?” Why must it? “I like playing in the snow but that’s it. I miss the spring and I miss the flowers.” This is coming from the mouth of a girl who is currently obsessed with the Frozen franchise, an obvious coping mechanism for the shorter days and colder temps. So we talk about the seasons again and how everything in life is part of a cycle. We were at a popular rocking chair store that doubles as a diner the other day. While Adam was focused on his coloring sheet menu (“I’m not hungry right now.”), Peyton scanned the room. “Why do people get old and wrinkly?” she asked. “If you’re lucky enough, you’ll get plenty old and get plenty of wrinkles,” I told her. And between now and then you’ll trim your curious son’s bangs to free them from the gears of a locomotive. You’ll wince when the neatly
stacked row of firewood topples over the next morning because of wickedly strong winds. And you’ll fiddle around with a pipe fitting for the pig water tank project while listening to your son’s perfectly reasoned argument for getting a Pomeranian as his next dog (We’ll see about that). “Do you think we can get a hamster?” I hear from the young man. “An hour ago you were talking about a Pomeranian.” “We can get that the next week. But I can have the hamster in my room tomorrow. They’re not expensive and I have the money.” Why must he make sense? Happy New Year! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Sustainable Progress … it clicks, clicks with clocklike persistence that tolls progress, purpose, the passage of time. – Cormack McCarthy As we advance further into virtual worlds, do we gain wizardry over life or do we leave behind something invaluable? We have apps for more than the average mind can conjure, saving us time so we can spend it with our devices, gathering information, learning, maybe inventing more apps to save us time. The late Serge Hochar said, “The value of time is so important. Invest in time.” I invest in time every morning I walk to my Writing Room and in the cold air kneel and build a fire in the woodstove for heat. It’s time consuming and antithetical to high-tech society, but it brings me back to something essential. A slower pace of life. Progress is inevitable; there’s an evolutionary impulse to the universe, but I wonder if there comes a point when it ceases to serve, beginning
to slide back onto self? The answers are as varied as the different humans and species inhabiting earth. I for one will not be buying a pair of self-tying shoes, but for the disabled person they spell godsend. And maybe those time-saving apps really are allowing more people to play ball with their kids or hike in the woods. Wine has always seemed a basic way of life. Tending the vines is 365 days of time and effort and, like all farming, one is subjected to nature. Yet, wine has become one of the most adulterated and manipulated food products of the modern era. From fungicides, herbicides and pesticides in the vineyard, to lab-bred industrial yeasts, tartaric acid, refined sugar, SO2, fining agents and chemical stabilizers in the cellar. And this is true for $4.99 grocery store bottles to the 100-point Cabernets. This is one reason why, at Basics, we try to support winemakers who believe in biodiversity and use sustainable methods, those who see wine more as a product of time and nature and not of the laboratory. We favour small
wineries over larger, mass production, even though the latter can offer better value. A shining example of this philosophy are the wines of Olivier Rivière, a young, dynamic Frenchman making wine in Rioja. Olivier Rivière, Rioja, ‘Ganko’ 2014 (biodynamic) – Ganko is a nickname Olivier acquired that means stubborn in Japanese—a useful trait for an outsider making wine his own way in Rioja. A blend of Garnacha and Mazuelo from 4080-year vines. Open, decant and let breathe. Bright red fruit combines with a herby, balsamic character to further mellow, with time, into notes of tobacco, earth and fig. 94 pts. Wine Advocate. Olivier Rivière, Rioja, ‘Eusebio’ 2013 (biodynamic) – 100% Tempranillo, this one is a contradiction, at once explosive, and understated with elegant finesse. Cedar, vanilla, cocoa and dark cherry. 93 pts. Wine Advocate. When you taste wines like these of Olivier, you taste a complexity and aliveness not found in bottle mass-produced. You taste character.

Blue Ridge LIFE
JANUARY 2017
On Sundays, Don Poole could be found leading the congregation of a Native American Baptist Church in rural Oklahoma. But during the week, his hands were typically much dirtier. Don started doing pottery as a hobby, but his dedication - not to mention his talent - allowed that hobby to grow quickly, turning his love of the craft into a way to support his family while spending time with them. “Amber and I grew up in the studio,” said Don’s daughter, Jessy Poole-Caruthers, hunched over a landscape she’s working on. Today, Jessy, her husband Daniel Caruthers (at the potter’s wheel) and her sister Amber carry on Don’s traditions of both art and family. But that started long before he passed away in 2005. Though Jessy is now fully entrenched in the pottery business, she spent her teenage years rebelling from ceramics. A talented painter, she got as far as canvas.

Amber, though, always knew she wanted to carry on her dad’s legacy. She worked in her dad’s studio throughout high school and fell in love with it. Don requested she do a full year of college and another year learning something new (she spent that year in auto mechanic school) before she returned to pottery – just to make sure it’s what she wanted to do. It was. Amber became a full time partner at Earth, Fire, Spirit Pottery – then located in Oklahoma – in 2004 and worked with her dad for just one year before he died. She continued working in the studio full time and traveling around the United States to sell her work until her first child was born. “I couldn’t be doing those 18 to 20 hour drives to shows anymore,” said Amber, who decided she needed to be somewhere in the Mid-Atlantic to make the most of her location. continued on page 14

Lexington seemed as good a place as any, but because her family lived primarily in Oklahoma, she had no built in support system here in Virginia. She mentioned that to her sister and – site unseen – Jessy and Daniel packed up and moved here, too. “It makes it so we could raise our families and be a support group for each other,” said Jessy. “I love that we can have our children in the studio. They get to grow up the same way that Amber and I got to grow up, surrounded by art. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Don Poole was so passionate about ceramics that he not only passed his art down to his children, he also passed it across (to his brother), up (to his parents) and even kitty-corner to his son-in-law. Daniel first met Don when he and Jessy were still in the painting program together at the University of Oklahoma. “Don inspired me,” he said. “When I was a little kid, my neighbor made these really tacky ceramic Easter eggs and that’s what I always imagined ceramics was.” Fast forward through Don’s influence and then a year-long post-baccalaureate ceramics program at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, and now Daniel is doing most (of, if you ask him, “all,”) of the throwing for Earth, Fire, Spirit Pottery.
“I really love the process of ceramics,” said Daniel, who prefers creating utilitarian (but beautiful) pieces that everyday people can afford - unlike some of the paintings he used to sell. “It is so neat to take clay - the result of ancient geological forces - and turn it into something that people can use in their daily lives.” Jessy, who grew up saying she didn’t want to get her hands dirty, is now often elbow deep in clay (or paperwork) around the studio. She and Amber are both passionate about pottery and they love being able to raise their kids (Amber is mom to 5-year-old Avalon and 18-month-old Riven; Jessy to 4-year-old Nova) while they do what they love. “I love to carry on my dad’s tradition of beautiful pottery,” said Amber. “I see customers sometimes who I haven’t spoken to in six years. They come up to me and tell me and tell me they look at my piece ever day and it makes them happy every time and that gets me right back to the studio. But I make sure my business is successful so that we can keep our way of life.” BRL 14

David Bernard of Massies Mill has been making a name for himself as a professional builder in the county for the past 40 years. This year, however, he decided to rescale his projects a tiny bit. “Small is beautiful. I decided to try a new process of building where you’re building smaller and more intelligently,” David explains. “Build efficiently and functionally and with a sense of ecological awareness.” Sitting atop a 24-foot trailer bed, this cedar-planked tiny house is in the process of becoming a wicked-cool luxury abode for a lucky and simple someone. “This is a tiny home which we call, ‘primo’ because it means first and best. I’m trying to build a high quality home as opposed to some slapped together shack on wheels,” David says. “It will have high quality soapstone countertops, fairly normal sized appliances, on-demand hot water heater and a mini splitheating system with air conditioning and heat – and as many ecologically sound practices as I can come up with.” When every square foot matters, storage is key. And David has taken full advantage of generally under utilized spaces. For instance, underneath the refrigerator and stove and even the staircase that leads to the loft have been converted into drawer space. “I can definitely see myself living there. You can live in small spaces, and paring down is very important,” David says. “We moved here in a Volkswagen with a box on the roof, that’s how much stuff we had. Later we pulled a 16-foot travel trailer and we parked it next to the creek and lived in that for a year. That’s sort of the genesis of this.” David currently lives in a beautifully crafted, regular sized home, which he built for his wonderfully patient and supportive wife who lived in that small confined space with him for twelve months. The tiny house under construction now is parked out back, so David’s commute really couldn’t be better. “There’s some challenges in the building. Actually working inside of it is difficult, because it’s so tight. You can’t take a piece of plywood in there and spin it around,” he chuckles. “In the confined space, every element is so much more important – where you put the light switch is totally critical. I sometimes think it’s like building a boat or something, pretty condensed, you have to squeeze every square inch out of it.” And once this project has reached completion, David does intend to sell. Although he admits it’s hard to even think about that far down the road. “I don’t have a buyer lined up but I’ve been continually trying to reach these steps where it looks good enough to show. I just got the exterior and deck done.” Still on the to-do list include installing a super hip 2-in-1 washer/dryer – very big in European dwellings, the stainless steel sink for the kitchen, and way on down at the end of the list, putting in bamboo flooring throughout the ground level. “I’ve been working with excellent builders, so I want to build it excellently, that’s what I do, that’s my comfort zone. And I’ve always felt that if you build as high a quality as you can, things will work out.” BRL
History is repeating itself at David Bernard’s property in Massies Mill. He an his wife lived out of a travel trailer by the creek while he built their home. These days, he’s nearing completition on a tiny home build on a 24-foot long trailer bed.

“Tax savings” – not an oxymoron! Applying and qualifying for real estate tax relief in Nelson County
withMarlo
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
New Year’s resolutions come in the form of kicking habits, losing weight, and saving money. Perhaps saving money may be the easier one to tackle, especially when there are many tax saving advantages to those who own real estate. Besides the well known mortgage interest deduction, there are tax relief programs for Nelson County Residents who apply and qualify. May you kick off the New Year with one of these tax saving opportunities. Relief for the elderly and disabled: Who? The minimum age for an elderly applicant is 65. A disabled applicant is an individual who has been declared 100% disabled by the Social Security Board. Qualifications? Applicant must occupy the home as a primary residence. The total household income of everyone living in the home cannot exceed $50,000. Income sources include savings, retirement, social security,
and all other sources. If applicant has a family member living with them, than the first $6,000 of that person’s income is exempt from the calculation. Net worth cannot exceed $100,000; the home and 1 acre of land are excluded from the net worth calculation. Savings? Tax relief is based on a sliding scale and provides a 10-80% savings. When? Submit application between January 2 and February 15, 2017. Yearly application is required as tax relief is based on fluctuating variables such as income and assets. Exemption for disabled veterans: Who? Applicant must reside in the home as a primary residence and be certified as a veteran and 100% disabled. The US Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency must provide a letter to certify that the applicant is 100% disabled. A surviving spouse (of a 100% disabled veteran) may also qualify if

the veteran died after Jan. 1, 2011. Savings? Qualifying applicant will receive total exemption from paying real estate taxes on the house and 1 acre home site. When? Can be submitted anytime. However, it is best to submit early in the year before tax bills are mailed. Once qualified the program automatically renews. Land use eligibility and savings: Who? Residents with qualifying acreage; land calculated after subtracting 1 acre home site. Qualifications? Agricultural; minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of plants or animals such as beef cattle, poultry, hay, etc … Horticultural, minimum of 5 acres in production for sale of fruits, vegetables, nursery, or floral products, etc … Forest; 20 acre minimum devoted to tree growth (can be timbered) Savings? Some tax payers have had their tax bill cut in half; savings is variable as it is dependent upon the land classification and

values. Note: Repayment of savings (up to past 6 years) can occur in the form of a roll back tax penalty if the land use is changed. For example, land that is taken out of land use and subdivided for residential purposes would be subject to the penalty. When? Applications are typically due by Dec. 31 for review by the land use committee in February. Non refundable application fee is $50 per parcel plus $0.25 per acre. Renew every six years upon renewal notice. Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-263-7070 for additional information or applications. May you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

LOVINGSTON
[ nelson county ]
STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES
THE
NOSTALGIA FACTORY Behind those bricks are years of history that won’t be forgotten.
John Bradshaw, Jr. has had his name on a building in Lovingston since he was a young boy, but it was also the name he shared with his daddy. “I grew up in Nelson County in Faber on a farm, but I spent almost every weekend in Lovingston. My dad worked and I played.” John Sr. owns the three brick buildings on Front Street now – along with many more properties and acres of land – but in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, he only owned the old Post Office on the far right side. This he used as a home base for his company, Bradshaw & Amiss Realty. And in a world before modern technology, the young John Jr. had the village of Lovingston as his playground. “It was my routine and my adventure,” he says. “I’d immediately go across the street to the drugstore, because they had a little ice-cream counter as part of the pharmacy. “Two ladies, Mary Purvis and Florence Bryant, a big-haired woman, always smiled and I would sit on the little stool – they had those mounted stools to the floor – and have my ice-cream.

“Of course, I never called any of them by their first names … that just wasn’t done when you’re a kid.” Next stop was to the department store directly across the street from his dad’s office. “They sold furniture, clothing, and in the back was toys,” John emphasizes for effect. “So I spent hours in there and I would buy those little wooden airplanes that you just wind up with a rubber band. And I’d look through all the comic books, and buy the newest one. The owner of the store, Mr. Rucker, he was there and he’d always smile and say ‘Hi.’” After that, the 10-ish year old boy would stroll through the hardware store in the upstairs of the Bailey Spencer building to keep himself busy. The image of a young John Jr, with wide-eyes and his hands balled into fists and stuffed into his pants pockets to reduce the temptation to touch the tools is so strong in my mind, I grin broadly while listening to him recount the tale. continued on page 28

“Then I’d go and visit Rule Loving and he’d pay me a few pennies to help him stock his store, or he would give me a soda out of that water-cooled soda-machine,” referring to Loving’s Grocery that used to occupy the corner building. “I’d help him stock bread, bring up soda bottles from the basement, or just play around. Remnants of the grocery store remain in the Bradshaw building in the form of old, rusty shopping carts. Possibly some of the first push-carts in all of Lovingston, according to Paul Saunders’ book, Heartbeats of Nelson. Traces of a past life, when the village of Lovingston was full of action, energy, and life. “I would just like to see that vitality back again. And I would like to see Lovingston actually breathing, instead of gasping,” John explains. “There are a lot of buildings that are in bad shape, but now it looks like, as a group, we’ve all acknowledged that we are willing to work on stuff and we’re coming together.” Enter, Luke Ramsey – a local, Carhartt-wearing kind of man, and part of a full service historic restoration company, based out of Nelson County. “It’s a family business, that’s what my father did. My uncle who is restoring across the street has restored many houses that he’s lived in. I guess it’s in our blood.” Luke tells me this, sitting in a heavy wooden chair on wheels that has a plaque on the back identifying it as property of the old Post Office. Everything about this place and its history gives me ‘the feels’. “I was really excited about having the opportunity to work on this. It’s close to home. I love Lovingston. My uncle had already purchased the building across the street, so it’s really neat working on this with him working on his right there. And all the other work that’s been going on around here, you see the whole town making a comeback.” The Bradshaw buildings have been empty for the past decade, accumulating an appropriate amount of damage in that time, but nothing that has shrouded the character that shines from every room. “It’s definitely a special building. Most of the brick work was in pretty good shape. It was a really well built building, which helps a lot.” Back in its heyday, before it was ever rented out as apartments or office spaces, the middle building served a very different purpose. And Luke, who has been given a thorough local education on the matter, carried on the folklore tradition and passed along the stories to me. “It was the central hotel. It’s the central spot of the whole town. That was where all the travelers would stay when they came through town for court or just passing through, or whatever. It was really a happening spot for a long, long time. And I guess just as the town has grown and spread out, people aren’t right here in the center as much as they used to be.” Apparently in the basement below it, there was an Englishstyle tavern, with the entrance and exit leading out back, away from the guests entering the hotel from the front. This brilliant and accommodating design style of separating business continued in these buildings for years after. Decades after the old tavern, a barber shop rented out one half the room, while a beauty parlor occupied the other half. One room, two simultaneous businesses, and all the chatting and gossip you could ever consume in one afternoon. “There’s definitely a lot of energy here,” says Luke. “We’re doing everything to the best quality it can be done. I don’t want to see it fall down in ten years and everyone knows I’m the one that fixed it.” The history within these buildings is so rich from having decades of life passing through them, and after John and Luke are done sprucing the place up a bit, the doors will once again open to accommodate a new wave of life that Lovingston so desperately deserves. No longer will these buildings sit forgotten and neglected on the street side. BRL

SQUAD GOALS ISO a few good men and women
I pulled into the Stoney Creek Fire Station on Old Hallows Eve. Only a faint strip of light shone along the mountain ridges against the now dark sky, and I could just start to make out the North star. I didn’t make a wish. I didn’t want to jinx the already ominous evening. The plan, according to Chief Curtis Sheets, was to meet up with Captain Jason Pugh, talk to a handful of interesting volunteers, and even go on a ride-along if the circumstances presented themselves. Did I want to ride in the big shiny fire truck that night? You betcha. On the other hand, that meant something had gone wrong, someone was in trouble. Herein lies the cacophony of emotions and my burden to bear for the evening. Meanwhile in the quiet firehouse, I met up with Wayne Hachey and his wife, Kathy Hachey, the only active female volunteer. Before their three years of volunteering for the department, these two held equally as meaningful careers in the field. “I was in the military,” Wayne tells me from across the common room table. “Just retired after twenty-eight years as an Army Physician.” Beside him, camera-shy Kathy explains how she stopped working in 2010 as a nurse, but volunteers here to be a part of the community, “There’s multiple things you can do to volunteer, but this one seemed to be more up our alley.”
30
Blue Ridge LIFE
JANUARY 2017
“Woman are important in the industry for comfort of the patient,” adds Captain Pugh. “Were ready for anyone, anybody that wants to volunteer.” Volunteers are only required to work 36 hours a month, usually in three 12-hour shifts. And after performing a short list of tasks, the crew is allowed to spend their hours at home or nearby, ready for a call. So what do the firefighters and volunteers do on a slow night? After completing chores and checklists, they eat. After they eat, they rest. But this was Halloween, and there ain’t no rest for the wicked. Plus, I wanted to dress up as a firefighter. The whole get-up, including fire suit and backpack, weighed in at 85 pounds, almost exactly doubling my body weight. I took proud, cumbersome steps across the room, my body absolutely swallowed in the oversized gear. My eyes swept the room, noting the lack of fireman’s pole – probably for the better. After my three-hour shift was up at the firehouse, I left the Captain and the small crew watching a horror movie and hoping the quiet would keep. Those interested in volunteering their time can check out more details on their website. The department is eager to recruit both men and woman who could add to their crew and community. BRL

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure
Looking Back What a year a difference makes. We had so much fun in 2016. We’re carrying it over and expanding into 2017. On the sporting, outdoor, local side of things in 2016, I had a great time working with Bold Rock Hard Cider, Wintergreen Resort and Blue Ridge Life. Bold Rock really embraced mountain biking working with the Virginia Off Road Series(Presenting Sponsor), creating its own mountain bike club and hosting events. Wintergreen Resort stepped up to the plate by adding the Tread & Trail Series to its summertime activities: Three race weekends embracing trail running and mountain biking to test, challenge, torture its participants. Plus, another year writing this column. I find it so fun to write because I have plenty of material to draw from. I guess the real challenge to this is boiling
down the topic matter to fewer than 600 words! In 2016, the Virginia Off Road Series kept me on the road for most of the year. We had 24 race weekends with over 30 separate races challenging over 2,000 mountain bike athletes. We’re working on the stats and the numbers are off the hook. For 2017, the series will be back with greater off-road racing. Our lineup always has an ebb and flow. For one, we will be adding the James River State Park’s Adventure Triathlon to the series in April to kick it up a notch. Stop by our website at www. VirginiaOffRoadSeries.com to check out all the action! On a personal note I noticed that life has a way of slipping by. A few extra pounds on the scale had caught my eye and caught me a little off balance. A plan was put in place that included more trail running, which I
have loved doing but somehow had not been doing as much as needed to stay light on the scales. So along my travels this year, I took the opportunity to hit the trails wherever I happened to be. Let me tell you Virginia ranks high on the scales for quality of trail offerings. Along the way to over 700 miles and an elevation gain of 45,732 ft of running this year, I think one of my favorites is the 7 mile fire road from the top of Wintergreen down to Stoney Creek. Watch those knees and shins if you try this one. For 2017, I’m creating a “Make It Happen” List of races. On the mountain biking side, I’m looking at some stage races from the Western North Carolina Pisgah State Race to British Columbia’s BC Bike Race. Then the Shenandoah Mountain 100 near Harrisonburg is one I’ve done five times over the years and might be put back on the radar. There are others such
as Breck Epic in Colorado or P2P in Utah. On the trail running side, I like the UROC Skylark and the Bel Monte over in the Sherando area. When you shed 20 pounds in a year, you really start to open your eyes and reach for the skies. March 2017 – Virginia Off Road Series starts a new season April 22, 2017 – James River State Park’s Adventure Triathlon 7 mile downstream KAYAK 8 mile Mountain Bike 5k Trail Run Register: www.trireg.com.1322 So now that it’s New Year’s Resolution time, think about what you achieved and adventured in 2016. sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC
When the Ink Dries Your John Hancock just locked you into a 30-year note on a new start in a new area – the home is now yours. Something drew you to this structure and now, you can change anything you want – both inside and out. Before you gas up the chain saw, sharpen the pruners and call in the troops, now is a really good time to stop and think long term on a plan. Yes, a designer or architect can give you a blueprint of something magical, but deep within the clutter sometimes associated with a landscape, you can ‘DIY’ and bring out beauty that will give you some short term satisfaction – at least until the ink dries. Here are some things to consider. Water is always the first factor in looking at a landscape – in particular slopes leading to the structure, down spouts/gutters and the layout of your driveway. All slopes that direct water to the structure must be averted. This can be accomplished either with berms or ditches directing the water just beyond where it can have any impact with the home. By installing either of these with a gentle slope, seed or sod can grow and be maintained easily with a mower. All down spouts should be run away from the structure to keep the area around the home as dry as possible – in particular when a basement is involved. Gutters should be debris free and should be capped with a debris filter that eliminates leaves, twigs and such from clogging them up. Finally, all gravel driveways should not only be crowned, but should be higher than the adjacent grass or woods so that water can never be allowed to run down them. Within the landscape, trees are the core that truly makes the house not only cooler in the summer, but gives a much needed height to the softscape. Careful pruning of limbs that
touch the house siding or roof should be performed so as to both prevent mildew from forming on the house and leaf litter from collecting on the roof respectively. Dead limbs that are close to the structure and trees that appear to be leaning towards the home should be removed by a qualified arborist. In the case of a leaning tree, sometimes an arborist can simply remove some limbs that give the tree weight on the structure side so that the tree can be salvaged. When in doubt, I tend to opt for salvaging any issue trees and simultaneously install a new tree in proximity so as to buy growth time for the new guy before the old guy has to be completely removed. Perennials can become weedy over time. It is their nature, when they are happy, to flourish and choke out less aggressive species. This is an easy fix; in the fall when the perennial has completely died back, take a sharp spade and dig into the crown and cut the perennial in half (or more) and remove it so as to reduce the overall size of the plant. Obviously when it comes to less than desirable species, the perennial can easily be completely removed. Sometimes too many perennials can make the landscape look weedy and unkept. Given their size, the fix is easy and landscape congestion can be avoided. Lastly, never underestimate serious ‘rejuvenation cuts’ on large shrubs. These cuts remove a tremendous amount of canopy from the shrub and allow it to regrow and fill back out over time. Large species like lilacs and viburnums can have the large caliper limbs removed thereby leaving the smaller growth to take over. Timing is critical, however, as most all shrubs respond best to cuts of this nature in the late winter just before new growth emerges.

inhibitors, which lessen stomach acid. C. diff colitis is usually treated with antibiotics which is strange given that antibiotics is a leading risk factor for getting C. diff. Probiotics may also be used in the treatment so that good bacteria can recolonize the intestines. Using medications to slow down the diarrhea may actually worsen the infection. One treatment being studied for severe or recurrent C. diff infections is fecal transplant – this is where stool from a healthy person is put in the bowels of an infected person. It sounds disgusting but can be very effective. C. diff can be spread by spores in the stool from an infected person. Good hygiene, such as hand washing, is very important to prevent the spread from person to person. Avoiding antibiotic use, except only when needed, is important to decrease the risk of getting C. diff.
TuckahoeAntiques.com
Dear Dr. Cole, I have read about something called C. diff. What is this? Our intestinal tracts have thousands of microorganisms in them. At times something may upset the normal balance and some of the bacteria may grow out of control. One of these bacteria is called Clostridium difficile or C. diff. As the bacteria overgrow they release toxins that attack the lining of the intestines, causing a condition called Clostridium difficile colitis. Mild symptoms of C. diff colitis may include diarrhea several times a day and abdominal pain. More severe symptoms may include diarrhea up to 15 times daily, severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool and fever. A perforation of the intestine can occur which can be fatal. Diagnosis is usually made by testing the stool. C. diff colitis is usually associated with antibiotic use, which kills off the bacteria that keep C. diff in check. Other risk factors include: surgery of the intestines, inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer, a weakened immune system, previous C. diff infection, advanced age, kidney disease, use of drugs called proton-pump
