thepublishers For a minute there, I thought I had a stalker. “Excuse me,” said the fabulous and festively-dressed barista as he extended a phone to me. “Your husband is looking for you.” My husband. Did my Pandora stream block an incoming call? Was Amy Winehouse working voodoo magic from the afterlife? “Hey, Tommy!” I answer. “Oh,” replied a disappointed voice on the other end. “You are not my wife.” Those are heavy words to hear, even from a stranger. My fabulously festive barista looked just as puzzled as me and hung up. Because I have seen every episode of The Americans, I knew how to discreetly survey the room. I spied two Millennials to my left at a large table, a lumbersexual near the fireplace, and a wannabe GenerationXer/likely Babyboomer to my right who was here when I arrived. Then, in true Keri Russell fashion, I gently nudged the window blinds behind me to see if my truck was still parked on the road. Because no Russian tie salesman was lurking near it, perhaps I was merely the target of an

inexperienced stalker. “Can I see the caller ID?” I asked, and fabulously festive barista showed me the display. “I know his wife!” I exclaimed with a sigh of relief. “And she is brown.” At this particular coffee shop, located smack dab in a suburban mecca, it’s fairly easy to narrow down the number of brown girls whose significant others may be looking for them. The list is short. And to think I nearly shut this laptop out of frustration because I didn’t know what to write about. But before I go, let me hit “save,” and order another cup of coffee, with just a hint of cream. The way my nothusband likes it. Happy New Year! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Winetasting Terms: Persistence One cold winter afternoon I was stacking wood when I stopped, and stood still. The clouds above were patchy mackerel scales, and a timid sun shone through the pale gray with persistence—a beautiful persistence I find often and easily in the natural world. I stared up to the clouds and only then, in my stillness, could I see the clouds were drifting ever so slowly across the sky. For a while I stood in the icy air gazing up, watching the soft, soundless movement of their random shapes changing—all undetectable without the stillness as contrast. There is this same quiet persistence in certain wines, wines that stick in your mind or memory years after being consumed. Certain burgundies have had this effect on me. In winetasting parlance, when a wine leaves a lasting impression it’s said to have persistence. A synonym for persistence is length, as in a “long, lingering finish.” A wine’s persistence refers to the texture and flavor that last on the tongue. Robert

Parker liked to suggest (often in numerical scores) that the amount of time a wine lasted in his mouth was a mark of its quality. Perhaps the content of a wine matters less than how it affects us— whether, as we smell it, we’re aware, whether our senses are awake and alive when we taste it, and whether we are. Château Puech-Haut, La Closerie du Pic, 2014 (organic) – PicSaint-Loup, named for the jagged, limestone mountain at its center, sits in the northern edge of France’s Languedoc. Here elevation and poor limestone soils combine to make wines of incredible freshness and balance despite their southerly latitude. Because of higher elevations, owner Gerard Bru and winemaker Mathieu Ciampi can use a higher proportion of Syrah without flabby results. La Closerie du Pic is a blend of concrete-aged Grenache and French barrel-aged Syrah, for a wine of elegance, texture and great persistence. Let this wine open up in your glass for a while, then look for

aromas of dark fruit: black raspberry, black cherry and plum stemming mostly from the Grenache, with smokiness, crushed granite, pepper, and sweet tannins from the Syrah. Full-bodied yet intensely smooth with a velvety mouthfeel, this is a great winter wine. After you swallow, count the seconds you can still taste and feel the wine on your tongue and in your mouth. The aftertaste of the wine is called the finish and when it lingers, we say the wine has persistence. Drinking well now but will evolve for another 6-8 years. Wine Advocate: 92-94 pts. A great value at $28.99. And don’t miss the picture of the “loup” (wolf) on its jagged peak on the front label. Persistence doesn’t have to wear a heavy price tag: Château Suau, Cadillac, Côtes de Bordeaux, 2015 (organic) – Owner Monique Bonnet has a way of producing impeccable wines at amazing prices. Here, ripe fruit combines with notes of cedar and tobacco for a memorable finish. Wine Enthusiast, 91 pts. Peaceful, joyous New Year to all.

continued from page 13

Starting in 1994 Meadowcroft Farm began producing pickles in their renovated garage from the bounty of Judie’s gardens. A neighbor quipped in the late ‘90’s, “She couldn’t survive off of those pickles if she ate them all.” Apparently, he hadn’t tried a Meadowcroft pickle and ate his words instead, as of today a couple of pallets are being wrapped for shipment to Europe. The business incorporated in 1998 and now maintains six full time employees and seasonal help to manage the holiday crunch. Judie’s husband Bill, a guy who can expatiate on preserves as long as there’s someone to listen, takes the myriad jars of bottled summer on the road and consistently brings home new accounts craving what the little factory in Swoope turns out. The Sweet German Pickles (a personal favorite) are the best seller in the pickle category. They are aged for ten days in stoneware crocks and break with a crystalline crunch. The 3X Salsa has a dedicated following. In the jelly category, Amaretto, Apricot, Peach Jelly jamminess slathered over a roasting chicken makes a weeknight comfort food supper easily extraordinary and explains without words, but rather flavors, its popularity. The Meadowcroft website offers many recipes and welcomes new ones. The perfect table to put this sort of bounty on is within sight of the pickle factory, down a sweeping hill from Judie and Bill’s house: The Inn at Meadowcroft.

Like the cucumber patch vining its way into the garage, so began the inn. Judie says, “Once the boys all moved out, Bill and I had spare rooms. Our pickle customers wanted to come get their product and then spend time on the farm, so we’d ask them to stay over.” Restoration of three 200-year-old cabins on the farm began in 2012. Additions to the cabins creates a 6000-square foot getaway, conference center, and lucky find for agritourists roaming the backroads of Swoope. Judie says, I tell people, “Bring your boots.” Guests are encouraged to visit the barns and walk the pastures, but after a brisk outing returning to the inn seems like a mighty appealing idea. Judy notes, “So many bed and breakfasts are Victorian. That’s just not me.” There are no billowing curtains just handsome, working interior shutters; although there’s not much to shut out unless the cattle on the nearby hillside pose a threat to modesty. The rooms are spacious with en suite baths featuring slipper claw-foot tubs and deep vessel sinks on restored antique vanities. In the bridal suite, there is a handsome walnut wardrobe that came from the Croft home-place, “Walnut Grove” just down the road in Swoope. Judie lays an affectionate hand on it, “It’s going to be a dry bar and closet with interior lighting. Circa 1752. You know what I like to say, this is where ‘old meets new.’” continued on page 16

continued from page 15

The inn comfortably sleeps twelve and offers conference room options, a breakfast/luncheon room/dining room (both with fireplaces), a tavern style bar to service both rooms for events and wrap-around porches with swings and rockers. Judie and I sit down in a couple of the mismatched antique chairs in the breakfast room, her eyes are keenly surveying this interior landscape for changes and improvements. She’s a woman of details as well as the big picture. She also knows when to take a break. All that this article mentions, and more, Judie has accomplished while coping with the disabling symptoms of fibromyalgia, without complaint. I ask, “Do you sleep at all or just lie awake and think?” The reply, “Pretty much.” Judie’s approach is casual, this canvas is available for what comes to her and she’s ready to roll with it all. The options are many, weddings, workshops, reunions, vacations, fortuitous passers-by seeking a warm fire, a hot toddy, and a luxurious bed for the night. Although the mileage may be better on a Prius, the thrill of coming upon a real country inn is no less than if in your horse-drawn carriage. Once inside you can drift off confident Prius is being watered and grained in the stable while you breathe in the fragrance of a steamy bowl of Judie’s butternut soup. It’s a special character that can make the past a comfortable present and Swoope’s Judie Croft does that with aplomb. BRL

STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

CALMER SEAS Life after Hurricane Irma

It wasn’t her first hurricane. Jennifer Tyler had ridden out a Category 3 before and Hurricane Irma would be her sixth serious storm. But Jennifer said there was something different about Irma as she creeped closer to the island. “A lot of the local animals — donkeys, roosters, iguanas, etc. — started behaving really strangely, as well as the bees, which was a real strong indication. A lot of the elderly people on the island were convinced that it was going to be a really bad storm.” As soon as Irma strengthened to a Category 5, Jennifer and her son ditched their tiny 400 sq. ft. cottage and hunkered down at a friend’s house. Her voice shakes as she describes her first look outside after the storm had passed. “[It was like] a nuclear bomb went off. I had never seen anything like it. Mass destruction. No leaves. No trees.” The animals were right: The havoc Irma wreaked was historic and it was mammoth. “We were trapped. Luckily, after the storm hit, the next day we were able to walk into the main town.” Someone whose heart was obviously in the right place sent a boat to the island for women and children. On Day 3, Jennifer and her son boarded it, arriving in Puerto Rico as refugees. Before Hurricane Maria hit that country a few days later, mother and child boarded a plane with a one-way ticket out of town. “One day, everything gone.” At a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet, the life Jennifer and her son had known shrunk to the size of dots in a vast blue ocean, and the horizon changed. “My entire community was devastated. My whole life got taken away from me in one swoop, and my son’s.” So a new year is upon us and Jennifer and her son are living with her parents in Nelson County, where she’s recently started working at Tuckahoe Antiques. “This is what has propelled me forward. Rick and Sarah (the owners) have been so wonderful and so kind to me.” It’s not easy adjusting back to mountain life when you’ve

Jennifer Tyler takes a break from her job at Tuckahoe Antiques in Nellysford (above). After living 19 years on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, she and her son are readjusting to life in Nelson County following Hurricane Irma. spent nearly two decades living on island time. “I’m not used to living in the States. I’m not used to the pace of the States. Things like driving and self check-out. Even here in Nelson County, this is fast for me. It’s been hard.” So she’s trying to spend time outside everyday. On St. John, she’d spend most of her time outside snorkeling, surfing and paddle boarding. So hiking and running everyday is Jennifer’s new way of coming up for air. “People here have been lovely and gracious. I think it’s hard for people to know what to say when someone has gone through something like this but everyone has been terrific and very supportive.” And, it is a new year. BRL

A Moving Target Changes in real estate tax assessment values for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

At the end of 2017 Nelson County property owners received the notice of 2018 real estate assessment change. “Change” being the operative word that gets people talking. I have had a number of calls due to concern over property assessment increasing or decreasing in value. Understandably, owners don’t want to pay more tax on a value that they feel may be overinflated. While owners may not mind paying less tax, they may be concerned that the value is lower than what they hope to achieve in a future sale. Here is some information that may help you better understand the reassessment process and values especially if you plan to buy or sell. A Moving Target Property values fluctuate. Hence, the county must periodically reassess property values. Per Virginia code reassessment must occur every 4 to 6 years for a county the size of Nelson. With so many properties to evaluate, the site visits and data collection may

begin 18 months before the actual values are released. By the time reassessment data is released the value pendulum may already be moving. Assessment ≠ Appraised Value A tax assessment value does NOT equal an appraised value and it may not accurately project a sales price. While the assessors use a defined process/formula to arrive at an assessed value, it does not involve the same level of detail as an appraisal process. For example, appraisers will enter a home and evaluate it based on attributes that it may or may not have in comparison to other homes that have recently sold in the area. Tax assessors do not enter the home. In addition, they are not always operating on “current” sales data. Even an opinion of value from an appraiser is dated and relevant for only a short window of time as market conditions change. Hence, don’t get too hung up on the assessment value as it may or may not be an accurate and/or cur-

Marlo Allen

rent reflection of the property value. Buyers and sellers can use this as a data point in conjunction with other information as provided by their real estate professional. For example, I track tax assessment values for sold properties to achieve a trending ratio which can be of much greater value than the tax assessment value alone. Disputes There was a short window of time that property owners could dispute their reassessed value. If you missed that opportunity, or if you were unsatisfied with the resolution of your initial dispute meeting, you can go before the Board of Equalization. This board will meet with owners at the courthouse from an estimated February thru April timeframe. Tax Rate The Board of Supervisors sets the tax rate to support the general operating budget of the county. Rates will fluctuate based on what happens with

property values. As you will recall in 2008, the assessment values increased and the tax rate decreased to .55 per hundred of value. The 2012 tax rate had a marginal increase to .60. In 2014 the values decreased and the assessment increased to .72. The public hearing dates to set the 2018 tax rate will be established in the spring and advertised in local papers and at www. nelsoncounty-va.gov. Tax Relief If you have concerns about your ability to pay real estate taxes, there is tax relief for those who qualify; programs exist for the elderly, handicapped, and disabled veterans. There are also tax breaks for a wide variety of land use designations.

There is a lack of control that one will have to accept when practicing the art of tie-dying, and embracing the imperfect is all part of the process. With this in mind, Uncle John still insists on quality vs. quantity. “I do small runs, and I take care in the process of how I tie them up, and hope that I get the best result. I’m not trying to just flip them and get them done. And to me, that says a whole lot. Take the time to get it right.”

Uncle John has been traveling across the country for decades, and along the way he’s left behind a Hansel and Gretel-esque trail made up of tie-dye t-shirts. And like most fantastic tales, it really is best to start this story at the beginning. “Originally, I was born in West Virginia and I grew up in Madison County. I left there in the early ‘70s and have been from here to California, but Virginia is home,” explains Uncle John donning one of his colorful creations. And as a man of many travels, he also found himself becoming a man of many trades. “I’ve done all kinds of work in my life, and then about four, five years ago, I bought a couple of shirts from a guy in Colorado. My wife and I had a resale shop in Crozet back then, and I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll buy some to sell.’ And after spending a couple thousand dollars, and his blessing, I started doing it myself,” he said. “I’ve been in Crozet for 24 years now. I met a lady then, she was from Crozet, and I [had] been with her up until February when I buried her.” That’s when Uncle John started a different kind of journey. During the past year he’s has been packing his car full of supplies and tie-dyed shirts, following friends and bands across the country in search of adventure, motivated simply by an earnest resolve to live. And on a rainy day in a Crozet park, Uncle John opened up the back of his car and gave me a sneak-peak of his tie-dying skills. According to him, there are three ways to do tie-dye: there’s the spiral, there’s the stripe, and then there’s the random. “I do a lot of random, mostly random with ice. That gives it the melt effect vs. the squirt bottle. It’s just so different, it’s not mainstream tie-dye,” says Uncle John. “I just do it, it just happens, and that’s the magic of it all, and that’s what it is to me, it’s like magic. All I can say is, if you wanna do it – do it, don’t be scared. Don’t be scared at all. If it ain’t fun, don’t do it.”

If you’re a fan of Uncle John’s work and you’re interested in acquiring some garb, you could stop by the cute shop, Ebb and Flow in Faber, or better yet you could hope to see Uncle John out and about in the world. And if Lady Luck ever grants you this gift – you gotta go talk to this guy. “People might want me to say I sell them most at festivals, but I don’t set up as a vendor. But, if I’m somewhere and somebody says, ‘I like that shirt you’ve got on’, and if I’ve got some in my car, then I’ll pull ‘em out and sell them,” Uncle John says. “It’s not like I’ll sell a lot that way, but it’s a steady flow. I’ll pull out my iPod and set it up on the car and have music, and there’s this little party going on around my car. I sell them wherever I can, even off my back. It’s not like I don’t have another one that I like.” In the past ten years, there has been a resurgence in tie-dye, according to Uncle John. And he should know; he’s been living through the fads and phases and also the stereotypes attached to making those wardrobe choices. “I’m not a product of the ‘60s. I’m a product

of the ‘70s. People look at me, and I’m not offended to be called an ‘Old Hippie,’ because I am an old hippie, but I just don’t party anymore,” he admits, with a broad smile. “It’s the colors, it’s the individualism of having something that’s so different than everybody else. Some people wear it to draw attention to themselves, but I don’t need that to draw attention to myself. I can just be me, and that’s what I do. I just be me.” This man wears tie-dye on his back and his heart on his sleeve, and he lives by very simple rules. The kind of rules that are easier said than done, but he actually does them. “I go out and try to be the best person that I can be every day. And it’s not always easy to be the best, but going through what I’ve gone through, going and shedding tears with people that I don’t even know, this summer has been so beneficial and helpful to me to be where I am today.” “I’ve been all over the country, and I’ve shed tears with people here and I’ve shed tears with people in Stanley, Idaho. That’s my journey, and along with my journey… are my shirts.” BRL

STORY by VICTORIA BEECHER GODFREY PHOTOGRAPHY by KATE SIMON

LABOR OMNIA VINCIT At Ox-Eye Vineyards, work conquers all.

Vineyards are notoriously a good place to drop a lot of money. This is where the financial manager in John Kiers glibly gets practical and it’s downright endearing. The first mark of this is the mailbox, its number and “Oxeye” are glued to the banged-up box in those stick-on symbols available at every hardware store. Kate’s howling as we turn in the drive and we realize we’re not in Albemarle County anymore.

Move to a place because the soil is right to plant your dream and you naturally become grounded.

continued from page 31

And when you intend to root your family there you have a life plan susceptible only to the variables of the climate, every sort of climate. Perhaps it’s the Naval background of both Susan and John Kiers that has kept them on track. Discipline and an eye on a guiding star? In the early ‘80s John encountered the wine cellars of the French Navy and he was taken. Kind of the last thing one would expect a military background to instill in a person. Along with the wine, he found Susan. In the late ‘90s they bought this sandy, well-drained, Augusta County land to plant their vineyard. The deep-growing rootstock is stretching down 15-20’ now, seeking water in the unirrigated rows, producing flavor rich fruits that have worked hard to survive. John says, “What I’m trying to do is grow the varieties that work here instead of imposing my will on Mother Nature.” His preferred varietals include, Riesling, Lemberger, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Loire Valley selected vines such as Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. All cool climate grapes. In answer to how much John has to spray for insects and weeds – as little as possible and he’s constantly looking for alternatives. He assures, “Grapes are self-pollinating so honey bees don’t hang around; we don’t need honey bees. Grapes set fruit almost immediately.” So, his minimalist sprays are not a great threat. Still sensitive to their environment the Kiers’ look for alternatives. John says, “European machinery is light years ahead of American because they have mandated that they will not be allowed to use herbicides in food producing areas.” To this end he has invested in an uncharacteristically new piece of Italian machinery that will help control weed undergrowth. However much of what John manages the vineyard with is some morph of cutting edge on the traditional. Susan clarifies, “There are a lot of things that John does you wouldn’t call ‘cutting edge’ more like ‘make shift throwback.” He’s handling some corks explaining the traditional stopper and its propensity to “cork” where the bottle is ruined by a chemical reaction to the cork. He’s pleased with the alternative he’s discovered in Bordeaux. A cork made from sugar cane manufactured in Zebulon, NC. It’s a green alternative and it functions well. John is clearly delighted with his winery-drains, any bargain hunter would be. Purchased from a winery supply these long slitlike drains in the concrete floor are a necessity and made of high dollar stainless steel. “They’re the same drains they use in slaughterhouses and car washes!” 32

Blue Ridge LIFE

JANUARY 2018

John got his drains from a car wash king in Canada for a third of the cost of a “winery drain.” I’m getting the drift of people who run a tight ship but let go when the leaning is strong. Four daughters all home-schooled. Olivia, the oldest thrived on a classical background of Greek and Latin and graduated from UVa. The next, Molly has strong artistic strengths and in the beginning days created the Ox-Eye logo. Harriet is bypassing enology to take in straight chemistry, shades of the familial practicality? And Eliza, like her sisters in a younger age, is taking it all in, not saying much but smiling the beam of a kid who is learning every minute of the day just hanging around listening. Home schooling was part of the commitment to farming, Susan says. “We knew we couldn’t be on a school schedule farming this place. We knew our vacation time wouldn’t be the same. Home schooling worked out well for that reason.”

Ox-Eye maintains a permanent remote tasting room in Staunton where visitors may enjoy a flight, have a glass, or buy a bottle or case. The building was a scale house for the railroad designed by Staunton’s premier architect, T.J. Collins. Turning out of the driveway we encounter the stone columns, “LABOR OMNIA VINCIT”, translated, work conquers all. Carve it in stone, not on the mailbox. This family business is going to age, uncorked. Folk Legend

BILL STAINES

The Greens raised their children on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay where they raced and cruised sailboats. As much as they enjoyed being on the water, eventually the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains drew them to build a home in Wintergreen’s pristine Stoney Creek neighborhood. “We moved from one gorgeous setting to another,” notes Betty. “What a joy it has been to help others discover this wonderful community and area!”

in Concert

“Betty Green is the definition of a Renaissance Woman. She graduated from Smith College, and she has a Masters degree from Johns Hopkins University. She was a competitive sailor, and she’s traveled the world. She speaks French. She’s a gourmet chef and a good golfer, and she volunteers at the Wintergreen Nature Foundation. And, by the way, she’s been a top real estate professional for over 30 years.”

Blue Ridge LIFE

JANUARY 2018

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Edge, LLC

Before the Paint Dries During construction of your new home, there are many things to consider and do while the excavators and contractors are still on site. The perfect world for a contractor is for you to do nothing. The perfect world for your future landscape involves many things that should not be left undone. The entire yard and future landscape is destroyed thanks to 45 deliveries of materials, contractor/ subcontractor daily parking along with the associated site work. While the premises are in complete disarray, perhaps now would be a good time to consider what happens next. Drains for gutters are one of the most overlooked issues on jobs. In short, the further those lines come above ground, the better the foundation and future landscape responds. Contractors look at this as a minimum – meet code and they are done. I, on the other hand, am more in the category of running those gutters an additional couple dozen feet to be sure that all water that can impact the area will never have negative results on future plans including driveways, gardens, foundations and other structures alike. In order to pass inspection and get the CO (Certificate of Occupancy), the grade from the house, out 10 feet, needs to fall 6 inches. Unfortunately for most, that will most likely be in the middle of a typical landscape bed. Moving water away from your foundation is never a bad thing. In fact, allowing for gravity to move all water, both near and flowing towards the premises, away from the home and surrounding area should be paramount long before the landscape contractor comes on site. The impact is massive. Think about how many things are impacted, including, but not limited to, driveways and walkway elevations and pitches, plant beds, retaining walls, etc. Keep the big picture in mind and always err to the overdone

side. Alas, it is much easier to decrease the pitch of the earth as it falls away from your home than it is to increase it since topsoil, chicken litter, peat moss and other organic matter are sure to be added to any well-respected landscape architect’s bed before the first root ball makes contact with the earth. I cannot say enough about driveways and how people approach your home. This is your most opportune and least expensive time where you can totally control the entire experience of what guests see as they arrive at your home – unique gables, walls, columns, lighting, etc. Most contractors have zero imagination and therefore take the route of least resistance into the property including just modifying an existing one. I have a different theory. I refuse to spends tens of thousands on construction/remodeling and not take into account every angle that my guests will view my new residence. From the approach, to the parking area and all the way to the front door, I want to totally control all aspects of that first impression. And let’s face it, at the time of construction, the entire area is a construction zone/disaster area anyway and minor changes to the drive are best dealt with during, and not after, the primary construction phase. It’s your castle – let it shine. Lastly, you have the future landscape. Backfilling with pure clay or mountains of rock will cost you more than double – you pay for the contractor to move this junk against the foundation and then pay a landscape contractor to move out the top 12 inches or so and replace it with highgrade topsoil. Even if you don’t know where the landscape beds will be, it is a safe bet to assume that the area against the home will at least have a shrub or two in them. It goes without saying that if you think that your future castle will be adorned like a bride awaiting her groom by backfilling with junk, you are gravely mistaken.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine The darkness this time of year gets me feeling pretty down, and winter darkness can be a struggle for a lot of people. But there is good news. By the time this edition of Blue Ridge Life is published, we will have passed the shortest day of the year, December 21st. This is the Winter Solstice and is one on my favorite days of the year because it means the days start getting longer. Although it is not evident for a while, I know that each day has a few minutes more daylight than the previous one and that gives me great joy. The winter solstice marks the day when the earth is tilted furthest away from the sun and the sun shines on its most southern point - over the Tropic of Capricorn. This is the official start of winter, and even though there are cold months ahead, the amount of daylight is increasing each day. This day has been celebrated for thousands of years in many ways and by many cultures. Thousands of people gather at Stonehenge in England for the solstice and sing, dance,

and play instruments. In Austria, people dress up like Krampus, the half-demon, half-goat counterpart to Santa Claus, to terrorize and tease the crowd in horned masks, fur body suits and whips. In Japan, people traditionally soak in hot baths with the citrus fruit to welcome the winter solstice and protect their bodies from the common cold. St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated in Scandinavia around the time of the winter solstice. Girls dress up in white gowns with red sashes and wear wreaths of candles on their heads in honor of St. Lucia. So although the long dark days can bring you down, the longest day has passed for this year. I hope you celebrated it in a new and exciting way. The days are getting longer and spring will be here before you know it. That is a reason to celebrate! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. This column is provided as a service to readers of Blue Ridge Life Magazine and it does not necessarily reflect the views of the publishers of this magazine.
