thepublishers It’s a big deal when the mommy car is in the shop for a week. “It’s bwoken. Put some tape on it and then you can get it back and we can get ice cweam,” Peyton advised. Adam thought we needed a little something stronger than tape. “Fix bolt! You need a fix bolt!” I love that. Car won’t run? Computer won’t boot? You need tape and a fix bolt! When the trusty Jeep came back (sorry I didn’t have time to clean out the layers of trail mix and apple cores), Peyton was thrilled to be back in the “purple Jeep” (it’s maroon) as was Adam. After all, this ride is about as familiar to them as their home. Big things happen in it. The 5-gallon bucket in the back? It came in handy when Adam got the bug. There’s a grocery store in town that gives little kids stickers at the check out line. There are plenty of cows, chickens and barns on Peyton’s window. Adam’s two bottom front teeth started wiggling a couple of months ago. By Christmas week, a lucky bump on the sofa during some rough housing knocked them really loose. By the time we were in the car with

both kids to calm them down from the blood and the crying, Adam said from his seat, “Momma, my teeth are breaking!” “Sweetheart, your baby teeth are about to come out and when they do, try not to swallow them by accident,” I told him. “Momma they came out!” I pulled over to a parking lot and sure enough, Adam had a pair of baby teeth in his hand. He unbuckled his belt and jumped to the center console to look at his new mouth in the mirror. “Adam’s teeth are bwoken. He needs tape, momma.” Peyton said. Hopefully, we can skip the fix bolt. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Love for love’s sake A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge. —Thomas Carlyle While a loving heart may nudge us, strangely, toward knowledge (although I would say it’s more closely allied with wisdom, which comes from heart not brain) it is also often not only the beginning of learning, but of joy and… inevitably sorrow. Yet if loving opens us up to sadness, not loving costs us more and cuts us off from life itself. Like the river stones I behold beneath the moving water, we’re shaped— sometimes pounded, sometimes polished—by every drop of love, worn thin in some places but ultimately molded to unique expressions of our hearts’ interior music. Romantic love may feel wonderful, making 70 and 20-year olds equally giddy, but our enchantment needn’t stop at the end of another’s arms, for we find some of our most enduring joy in work we love. Then there is love of art, love of spirit, and love of wine and food. But alas, we are lowly humans still titillated by human connections and

ever lured by immediate gratification, so this Valentine’s Day in celebration of both romantic love and the passion for good food and wine, I offer these delights, apropos of love through all seasons of life. Castorani, Amorino Montepuliciano d’Abruzzo, Casauria, 2007 – A mountainous and wild region in central Italy, Abruzzo stretches from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. Montepuliciano d Abruzzo (not to be confused with Vino Nobile de Montepuliciano in Tuscany) is often a rustic, somewhat hearty wine best consumed young. The Castorani, Amorino, Casauria, 2007, however, has the age to temper it. It s earthy and rich with notes of black cherries, licorice and chocolate. But don t pair it with chocolate, unless very dark, for the sweetness in the chocolate will make the wine seem bitter. Pairing wine with any sweet dish or sauce, for that matter, can cause the wine to appear to taste bitter. Medium tannins make it best matched with cheeses, meats and pastas. And the name, Amorino? The Amorino was a special jewel created by Armando Di Rienzo to offer his beloved when he proposed;

it symbolized the promise of eternal love. $24 Heritage, Vin Doux, 2007 – From the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, the same region that produces Château Musar and has some of the most perfect conditions for making great wine, comes this vin doux or ‘sweet wine’ with which to tempt your sweetheart. A beautiful amber rosé made from a blend of Cinsault, Grenache and a touch of Tempranillo, with a nose of sweetly inviting burnt caramel and toffee. $12 Now, here is the wine to pair with chocolate. Try our very own Gearhart’s Chocolates which I think are equal to Christian Constant, Dalloyau and the very best that Brussels or Paris has to offer. Schlumberger, Rosé, Secco – A uniquely luxurious rosé from Austria’s oldest sparkling wine house and supplier to the Austrian royal family. With a nose of raspberries and roses, and a frosted pink bottle, it’s the perfect Valentine’s gift for the bubbly lover. $24 See France off the beaten tourist track. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

CABIN CRAFTERS

The story of this cabin begins nearly 400 years ago, when Virginia was still a colony and a tree in Greenwood was still just a tree.

Job foreman Kevin Knicely and Meade Shirley, owner of Elk Mountain Contracting pose in a finished cabin that they had taken apart and reassembled and restored on a farm in Greenwood.

Originally felled in 1828, the tree became part of a cabin on what was then part of the Mirador estate. 10

Blue Ridge LIFE FEBRUARY 2014

There, it was added upon and added upon (and possibly lived in, at one time, by the county doctor), until it fell into disuse. As they say, “If walls could talk,” there would be a lot more to tell but between 1828 and today, not much is known about the cabin that tree became. Fast forward several hundred years and that little tree is getting a whole new life. Martha Rogers used to drive past an old cabin on the way to her daughter’s preschool every day until one day she noticed a group of men taking it down. She was so upset of the thought of “her” cabin going missing that she pulled over and asked what was going on. One of the men was local builder Meade Shirley.

Meade Shirley holds a copy of the original deed to a cabin that he disassembled and then rebuilt for Bradley and Martha Rodgers on their farm in Greenwood. The deed dates from 1828.

“The [owners] wanted to do away with the cabin because they wanted another building on the spot,” said Meade who specializes in reconstructing old buildings. Sometimes he fixes buildings on site, but this time was different: This time Meade traded his time for removing the cabin and in exchange got all of the usable antique wood. The fact that Martha stopped by and said she wanted to buy it was just a happy coincidence. “We had a full sharecroppers home on a corner of our property which we had some contractors come out to see if it could be restored and it couldn’t so we knew we were going to have to tear that down,” said Martha’s husband, Brad. “But the spot is a beautiful location; there’s a vista. It’s at the bottom of one of our horse fields and it looks up onto the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Not a spot they could pass up. So together with Meade and Charlottesville architect Bahlmann Abott, Brad and Martha designed their dream house: a three-story antique cabin (complete with wood, brick, and stone

from the original), with three bedrooms, two and a half baths, a fully appointed kitchen, and a large main room. And don’t forget the view. Meade has been focusing his work on older homes, cabins, and barns for years now - tearing them down and rebuilding them with as much original (or period) material as possible while keeping them up to modern building codes. “Every one is really unique,” said Meade about his chosen specialty. “It wasn’t like [the original builders] went to the lumber store and bought what they needed; they and to take what was close to the cabin and make it. They had no electricity for tools and there is so much craftsmanship in dealing with these cabins.” “We’re delighted to have something of this era on the property,” said Brad who already has an 1860s-era house to live in on the property (today: Clitton Stable, Martha’s horse boarding business; formerly: a plantation-style orchard) with Martha and their daughter and therefore plans to turn the cabin into a bed and breakfast, for which they’re slowly accumulating furniture. continued on page 14

“We’re just delighted to have something this old,” said Brad, a pediatric surgeon at the University of Virginia Hospital who is curious about former owners of his new cabin, even though he has heard rumors that he may have a few things in common with at least one former owner. “We have been told that a physician lived there and used it as an office in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but we can’t confirm that,” Brad admitted. “The original owner is on the deed, but I don’t know much of a history from that point to the present. That’s what we’ll spend some time doing over the next couple of years. There are a thousand imagined stories.” BRL

Connie Muscenti is a pianist and music teacher. Marti Naro teaches gifted art and is an editor for an online software company. Paul Richards is an Air Force Veteran and retired upholstery shop owner. They don’t have much in common, but one thing has brought them together: Music. Connie says she played cello years and years ago and loved it, but hasn’t had a chance to play recently or locally. When she found out that Crozet was getting it’s own community orchestra, she thought Nelson deserved one, too, and the Nelson Community Orchestra had it’s first rehearsal in mid-January. “People need a safe environment where they’re not going to feel intimidated or stupid; a place to be brave and try it,” said Connie who really wants to make sure that the Orchestra is a multi generational community group. “Nelson County Schools doesn’t have a strings program right now, but I’m sure there are kids taking lessons.” Philip Clark, the conductor of both the Nelson County and the Crozet community group, would also love to see people of all ages get involved. “In Crozet, we have one 15-year-old and two 85-year-olds,” said Philip, who conducts and arranges music for the Nelson Community Orchestra. “I’d love to see that in Nelson.” Paul, who played the trumpet in the air force and has played with the Charlottesville Municipal Band for 26 years said there is something about playing in a community group that is incomparable to any other experience. continued on page 19

3 HIDDEN DANGERS FROM SUNLIGHT THAT ENTERS YOUR HOME.

UV Rays, Infrared Heat, & Visible Light are destroying everything inside your home. They also have an impact on your family’s health.

TRUTHS

MYTHS

• UV Rays are solely responsible for sun damage and fading • Conventional window treatments such as blinds or curtains stop fading • Double pane/LowE windows filter enough damaging rays to prevent fading • Only direct sunlight causes significant damage

• 3 types of sun rays are responsible for fading: UV, Infrared, & Visible Light. • Closed Blinds/Curtains still allow damaging rays inside your home. • Double pane/LowE windows can filter some UV Rays, but reject very little if any of the Infrared or Visible light.

SOLUTION: 3M™ Window Films installed by Clear View Window Tinting

• Reject 99.9% of UV Rays, up to 97% Infrared, & up to 85% visible light • Applied to existing windows, so they’re filtering 24/7—365 days a year. • Are very light & low in reflectivity. You literally can see through them better than clear glass.

“It’s a feeling of teamwork,” he said. “No one person can do the entire orchestra all alone. We all have to depend on other people playing their parts to make the composition work.” And after just one rehearsal, everyone was impressed with what the group could accomplish, especially with a group so heavy in on woodwind and brass players, like Marti (a flautist) and Paul. The group is definitely on the lookout for strings players and percussionists but anyone is welcome. “Having a community orchestra where people are coming together, in it for the love of the art, is something that I would love to keep going,” said Marti, a liturgical flautist. “Nelson County has a lot of great, fantastic artists. It’s great to have a music program we can call enjoy.” BRL

2013 year end residential real estate summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

with 30 sales at an average price per sq ft of $134.75, and all other nonresort or county properties with 87 sales and an average price per sq ft of $118.42. When comparing 2013 sales with 2012 sales, all 3 markets saw an improvement; Stoney Creek realized the most significant increase in sales volume at 150%, followed by county/ non-resort at 45%, and Wintergreen at 4%. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 113 properties sold representing 42 detached homes and 71 attached/condos. Hence, 63% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the county locality with the most sales was Afton with 20 sales representing 23% of the county/non-resort sales.

ber-25, December-9. Quarterly Summary: Q1-54, Q2-45, Q3-74, Q4-57. Q3 recognized the highest number of sales while Q2 achieved the fewest. The strongest months in 2013 were July and September. The slowest months were June and December. (Compared to 2012 which exhibited a late in the year sales recovery with the highest sales in Q4 (64) and the lowest sales in Q2 (35); strongest month in December (25) and slowest month in March (8).)

Countywide Overview; 230 residential properties sold in 2013 which represents a 27% increase from the same time period in 2012 when 181 properties sold.

2013: 230 sales, median $245,950, average price $267,153, Average price per sq ft $140.42, Days on Market (DOM) 187. The 2013 market has shown increases in the number of sales and price while experiencing fewer days on market. While the amount of sales has increased significantly, the price increase per sq ft is marginal because there is still a lot of inventory/competition; there are currently 328 properties for sale with an average price per sq ft of $166.27. It is also important to note that the properties that are actually selling are the ones that are priced appropriately for the market. Value is an important decision making tool for buyers when there are so many options available for purchase.

Statistical Comparisons; Q1Q4 2012 recap: 181 sales, median $227,900, average price $258,651, Average price per sq ft $139.25, Days on Market (DOM) 217. Q1-Q4

Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 113 sales at an average price per sq ft of $158.87, Stoney Creek (valley)

In 2007, Paul Saunders published his first book, Heartbeats of Nelson, a 600+ page-turner about the historical happenings of the county as a whole. His latest, Down on the Farm, is a compilation of short stories which focus on the life of one man and his love for the farm. “We were sending out newsletters to our customers,” says Paul, referring to the Saunders Brothers Farm Market and Nursery newsletter. “And one day one of the children comes in, my son Jim, and he said, ‘Dad why don’t you write some of your stories that I can put in our newsletters on the farm?’ And so I started writing these little newsletters every week or two weeks, just to let people know what’s goin’ on down on the farm.” continued on page 30

The majority of the short stories are from more modern times, like Pablo, Our Cowboy and Irrigation, a New Peach, and a New Azalea. “It’s stories that people told me, it’s stories on how some of the things were done, people and places and things.” Some are firsthand accounts of Paul bearing witness to nature at its kindest and at its most cruel, while others date back to his childhood, a time when threshing, nipping, and courting were all common practice. A time when men grew in the fields they were planting. “I started with propagating boxwoods in 1947 – sixty seven years ago,” says the now eighty year old specialist. “I was a kid and somebody showed us how we should do it and it worked! It worked! And all of a sudden I had a bunch of little boxwoods growing and my calves. And all I could think of for four years at school was how to come back to Piney River.” After graduating from Virginia Tech, Paul served in the Army before he would finally make his way back to Nelson County, but it would still be many more years before he could call the farm home once again. “The opportunity came to come back and be a surveyor, which I was, and all the time the nursery was growing. I started surveying as a way to come home, but there was not enough income to add my wife and me to the operation, so I surveyed for twenty plus years,” explains Paul. “Then I got snake bitten and I said, ‘Buddy, you had one chance to get me, and that’s the only chance you gonna ever have.’ I was in the hospital five days and it made me think,” Paul recounts from the tale, “Snake Bit.” “I said, ‘Now quit surveying and go be what you’ve always wanted to be. Raise your plants, and raise your peaches, and raise your apples, and raise your calves, and do what you wanna do.’ So I did. That was 1981.” With many changes in agrarian technology and a few additions to the family tree, Paul’s been living his love story for over three decades now. Dedicated to his wife Tatum, the other love of his life, Down on the Farm asks you to …

In the renovated space just west of Staunton, where they moved the company in 1979, the staff now combines decades of experience with the latest in computer and laser technology. While the work is no less time consuming with computers, modern pipe organs do benefit from a greater understanding of the science of sound while they remain rooted in centuries of traditional craftsmanship. According to John Boody, their small company is among some 200 makers of pipe organs in the U.S. However, their size hasn’t prevented them from having a large national and international reach. Current projects include an addition to the Trinity Episcopal Church organ in Staunton. At the same time their company is delivering the last of 8 organs in Japan. Their list of accomplishments also includes creating and placing an organ in the Yale University Institute of Scared Music and one in Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge, England. They recently completed their largest project to date, the creation and installation of the pipe organ at Grace Church in New York City, which in Boody’s words was “a huge job” that raised their expectations of what the company can accomplish.

Much of the wood used to build the organs at Taylor and Boody comes from John Boody’s log pile at the saw mill on his property in Middlebrook. Boody built the saw mill so he could control the quality of the wood used for the organs.

The question for Taylor and Boody is, after crafting some 70 organs, a lifetime of work that leaves a substantial legacy, is it time to pass the business to the next generation? The good news is, the staff already includes Boody’s son, daughter-in-law and son-in-law and the entire group of artisans is trained and ready to carry this unique legacy forward. As carriers of such rare knowledge the Taylor and Boody team designs and builds older style organs and many of the tasks, like pouring metal for pipes onto a stone table, mimic work done as far back as the ancient Romans. In fact, pipe organs can be traced back more than 2,300 years.

Keyboard covers for three continuo organs sit laid out at Taylor and Boody Organbuilders in Staunton. The keyboard at top features ebony naturals with cow bone topped sharps. The bottom two feature boxwood naturals with ebony sharps (above). The stops sit in position on Opus 24, an organ built by Taylor and Boody Organbuilders in 1984 at Christ Episcopal Church in Staunton. The stops control which set of pipes are activated. They are currently in the process of building 5 more stops for the organ (below).

Christopher Bono blows into a pipe as he adjusts it. Once a pipe is built it gets “voiced” where it is adjusted to achieve the right sound. Later they are tuned for the correct pitch (above). 38

Pipe bodies tied to the wall wait for the next stage of construction. To the left of them is a large pipe foot that was cut off a pipe they renovated. To the right are wooden forms used in building the pipe bodies.

Each instrument can weigh thousands of pounds and require years to build, starting with the design and lasting through the final installation. The staff at Taylor and Boody meticulously makes each part of every organ by hand, from the ebony keys and the metal and wooden pipes to the leather sides on the bellows and the intricate woodcarvings on the windchests.

B.J. Regi and Robbie Lawson roll up a pipe body. The pipe is then soldered together, and the pipe foot is later attached.

Each pipe has a unique sound, tone and timbre and is a masterpiece of precision and mathematical calculations. Thousands of pipes in all sizes give the organs their dramatic sound. The metal is cast, then rolled into sizes that range from tiny to towering. The slots in the inlet of the pipe draw air in and out and set up the complex vibrations inside the pipes. Each pipe plays one note, based largely on its length, while the diameter influences the tone of that pipe. The slot or cut-up in the pipe also plays a role in

what is called the sound or color palette. Final tuning of every pipe is accomplished through miniscule adjustments. Even though building a pipe organ is an extremely complex process, listening to one of Taylor and Boody’s organs is simple. First, wait as the organ comes to life and begins to breathe in and out. Then, as organists like Gen Bolena at Trinity Episcopal lift their fingers, pump the pedals and work the stops, let the ethereal sound wash over you and touch your soul. BRL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

More, More, More Of all that happens from spring through winter each year, I often find myself wondering about that group of plants that I truly love – and why, if I love them so much, do I not really plan and plant tons. We all know them. They are the plants that perform as advertised and give us our money’s worth each and every year we pull out the spade. They work well in arrangements, may even offer fragrance or possess drying qualities. My list is large but these few are just a partial list worthy of ‘Sam Dirt’. From seed to flower, the sunflower typically takes around 40-60+ days but is well worth it. Choose the pollen-less multi and single stem varieties in conjunction with the white striped/snack type and black oil types – staggering your season long plant dates 10-14 days to provide a plethora of blooms until early fall. Choose random full sun sites with ample drainage either in the vegetable garden or in the border where a little cheerful height is needed. And in fall, self-made birdfeeders seals the deal with our feathered fowl. Bearing a similar look as a bright and cheerful sunflower, Rudbeckia Indian Summer has been around for around 20+ years and is no less popular now than when it hit the market and scored numerous awards for its flower and care-free nature. Growing to around 3 feet, plant them near the middle or back of the border in May and enjoy cut flowers for months to come. Full Shade + Deer = Helleborus. I have been talking up Hellebore for as long as I have been growing and installing them. A drought tolerant, evergreen perennial with a three month bloom cycle is worthy of as much shade space as you would allow. There are a number of ‘series’ out now to extend the season from Christmas

til Easter and beyond. Buy them. Dwarf phlox is one of those dropdead hardy plants that can literally be planted in solid clay or rock and not watered for the entire season and still thrive. Ok, don’t try this but they really are tough as nails. Choose a full sun site in either amended or native soil. Intermix them, blue, pink and white, as I find single varieties of single colors a little too neat and, ‘Yawnnnn’, boring. The panicle hydrangeas arrived on the scene some 10+ years ago and brought with them the guarantee of hydrangea color. Unlike their French counterparts, the panicle hydrangeas bloom in acid or alkaline, moist or dry soils, and don’t require an Exorcist or Hydrangea manual to bloom. What was once a short list of Hydrangea panniculata varieties has begun to grow to numerous sizes and colors aside from the white standard. Limelight or Little Lime now with pink colors coming in 2014. About 5 years ago I acted on an ‘end of year blowout sale’ on about 1,000 yellow (King Alfred) daffodils. Instead of breaking the lot and divvying them up to plant here and fro, I installed every one of them in an area half the size of a tennis court. The end result is show – year end and year out, vole and deer proof show. Yes, you do have to contend with the spent flower stalks but, in a manner of speaking, does the guarantee of dirty dishes thwart the party? Snowball Viburnums are an heirloom plant that most of us remember being somewhere between the American boxwood and Sugar Maple in grandma’s yard. With no real fragrance to taunt, Snowball Viburnums are known for a 3+ week of pure white bliss – snowball size! Locate them in the back of a sunny border as they can approach 6 feet tall and wide.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, It is 1:00AM, and I CAN’T SLEEP! I’m miserable, please help! Well, first of all, thanks for writing instead of calling. My (least) favorite call as a resident doctor in training was the 2:00AM call waking me up with someone on the other end saying, “Doc, I can’t sleep.” I always felt like replying, “That makes two of us!” but of course never did. The list of causes for insomnia is long. (Maybe reading the whole list over and over would put you to sleep!) Some of the more common causes include use of caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, decongestants, or other medical problems like asthma, allergies, depression, anxiety, or even just plain old stress. Seeing your doctor to look into the cause of insomnia is always a good idea, but before you do, there are some easy things to try at home first. Just about everyone knows that trying hard to sleep is a sure way to stay awake. Instead, focus your energy on good sleep habits. Make

sure to avoid caffeine, especially in the evening hours. Don’t get into bed until you are actually sleepy, and set an alarm so you get up at the same time each day. Use the bed only for sleep, not as a place to read or watch TV. Instead, read (preferably something boring) in a chair outside of the bedroom until you feel sleepy, and then get in bed. If you aren’t asleep within about 20 minutes, get up and do something else quiet and relaxing and try again. Get good exercise and fresh air every day. If all of this fails, it is probably time to see your doctor. There are prescription sleep aids that can be a great help at establishing a better sleep pattern. Also, there might be something else going on that your doctor can help uncover. Sleep well tonight! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Return on Investment: Your Body When we make long term investments in retirement funds, a home or a car, we want a good return on the investment. We want the invested money to make more money, the home value to rise so it can be sold at a higher price and the car to perform well over a long period of time, staying in good condition for resale. It is time to consider your body as a long term investment. Our body and mind are gifts that we must care for over a lifetime. Imagine your future self at ages 50, 60, 70 and 80 years old. How would you like to function at those ages? Do you see yourself being active or in a wheelchair? Envisioning your future self is a great motivator for life long wellness. The first step is assessment. Assessment: financial health expenses: As with your financial investments, it is important to determine health assets and expenses. Collect your health receipts from 2013 (copays, illnesses, hospitalizations, eye, dental). Then, record the money spent on quick stop snack and bever-

ages (coffee, candy bars, sodas) for four weeks. Examine your grocery receipts to determine healthy and non- healthy food items purchased. Typically, there are potential financial savings in everyone’s daily expenses. That money then becomes your part of your health dollars for prevention. In addition, you’ll notice how your spending choices affect your health. Assessment: current physical health. Fitness assessments in addition to annual physicals are important. The Fitness Assessment determines your physical level collecting objective data so your physical therapist and trainer can design an appropriate exercise program. Measures such as body fat, girth, strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, heart rate, blood pressure are tested. An extensive interview is performed. These tests performed annually direct your fitness program. The time and money spent on your health is a wise investment just as the money spent in home and car maintenance is valuable. How well would your car perform if you didn’t spend

the money on oil changes or tune ups and put the incorrect fuel in it? The goal is that your body performs well over a lifetime. The “quick” fad diets or exercise gimmicks do not

work. Countless research shows that prevention yields better physical, cognitive and emotional wellness regardless of what age or physical level you begin. The challenge is to begin.
